I am, but maybe not as feverishly as I once was.
I still love keeping up with what’s new, what’s coming out and seeing, you know, if my favorite colors are being re-released, like if Chanel ever re-released Jade? — oh, my gawd! Swoon city. I would go buck-freaking-wild and be that crazy person who called the counter and said, “COULD YOU PLEASE SET ASIDE FOUR BOTTLES FOR ME THANK YOU!!”
But to be honest, you kind of get a feel for these things after you’ve followed them for a while, and chances are, you will see another LE coral lipstick [OR, INSERT ANY OTHER PRODUCT HERE] again.
It’s a very safe bet.
I’m not saying that I never chase down LE products or go cuckoo-crazy anymore because I do, like when something has a really cool theme or colors that I like, or packaging that I love, like Sonia Kashuk’s new collection. It has these shiny black and gold compacts and bright new green, blue and hot pink brushes with hot pink brush heads that I think look amazing!
Or the MAC Alluring Aquatic collection from last year? I went batsh*t cray for that watery mermaid action.
I was reading something online a while back, and now I can’t remember where, about why shopping feels so good, and the article talked about a study in which scientists concluded that it was linked to the primitive hunter-gatherer brain, and how, you know, when you were a cavewoman, you weren’t sure if you were ever gonna get those berries again, so when you saw those berries, you had to get as many berries as you could, and I think that sort of kicks in with the LE stuff a lot of the time.
What do you think, my friend? Are you into the limited edition makeup chase?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I voted ‘no’ here and it’s a big reason why I tend to stay away from MAC in general. I hate the exclusivity of the limited edition chase. For most people who work regular jobs and just want one or two pieces, stalking the website at midnight or heading to the counter the moment it opens are unrealistic.
Kwmechelle says
I voted no but there’s definitely a caveat with that. I SERIOUSLY wanted that coral-pinkish blush that came out in The Simpsons collection but I waited too late to decide I wanted it. I even visited a CCO a few weeks back to see if they had it. That collection hadn’t yet arrived at their store, but fingers crossed that they get it next month.
Beyond that, nope, definitely don’t chase the LE products bc I know I can find something very similar from another brand, already have something similar, or another brand is going to release something similar. That said, though, I still stay on top of recent releases just cause I like being in the know & staying on top of current trends. Plus, it’s fun to dream about being able to have all the makeup in the world that I want
Agata says
Yes and no. For some reason LE collection products are appealing to me, maybe because of the packaging, maybe because they are Limited. But if I can’t get what I want online, I don’t go to the store or call every single place to see if they still have it in stock. I really hate what’s going on with Mac’s releases and how the collections sell out within seconds of the launch. Having said that, I will stalk Mac’s website to get that Beauty Powder from the Mac is Beauty colection 🙂
P.S.
Alluring Aquatic was my favorite collection so far as well.
Erin says
I only go after things that really suit me and that I have the money for. Sometimes I stalk ebay if I missed something the first time around!
Sandy says
I wasn’t sure how to vote because sometimes I keep on top of LE products but sometimes I just don’t have the time to do so and it goes on and on all the time. That being said will you be able to show us some of the MAC is Beauty lipsticks ahead of time? Of course I am tempted by the lustres and keep hoping you will be featuring some of them. Thanks Karen, love your blog.
Larissa says
Sometimes, I think it depends on the collection. I sometimes still think about past MAC collections hahaha…

Not so much. I really wanted a particular shade of lipstick from MAC’s LE Rocky Horror Picture Show collection. I had no idea how hard it would be to compete to get one. So needless to say, even though I tried on the first day, it was sold out. I’ve gotten some other LEs that were less in demand from other brands, but I’m not really willing to stay up to midnight by the computer to try to score, lol.

I am, but weaned off the hard way last year, due to a self-imposed spending ban.
It hurt, especially with the Alluring Aquatic Collection, but I am proud I stayed strong.
Now that I´ll be back to working and finally have some money on my hands, I sense I will be keeping up to date with the MAC Collections again.
Tatiana says
I voted yes, because sometimes I do go after those LE products. Like those TF cream shadows!! Darn I wish they would just make those permanent and expand the color range available. Otherwise, unless something really rocks my socks, I don’t go out of my way to seek it out. I have to admit at this point in my life, I have enough eye shadow and lipstick to last me decades.
MonicaP says
I was an LE addict due to the unique packaging. However, awesome MAC stuff like the aquatics collection gets sold out fast and then it’s on ebay for double the price. This gal ain’t gonna play that game.
Monica.
Carrie says
Yes, but only with very specific brands and items. MAC is not one of them. Their endless collections, the hype, the desperation…I’m not playing. I’m also not going to pay an insane price on ebay. If I missed it on Nordstrom, NM, Barneys, etc…then I missed it and I move on.
Tulipthecat says
I voted yes but really I’m only into limited edition MAC lipsticks. I stopped for a while because I had too many but then I started up again.
Iris says
Up to a point, yes. I take a look at new releases but will nowadays only get the items if I really like them and can use them.
astou says
Not really.
I just buy whatever i really want, limit edition or not.
Liza S says
I am totally into the LE game but it depends, i wont buy it if i know i wont use it but if its LE and i know i can’t live without it then YES! So i’ll buy a nice LE nude or pink lipstick but not the purple one or other crazy things. Chanel’s highlighter that is coming out this summer…. dying for it already…. but the price GAH. Gonna have to start saving now for that one but its a LE Must Have!
Kiss & Make-up says
I try not to be. But sometimes I get dragged in the chase because of people like… well… you 😉
Karen says
Haha! Touché.
Sorry, girl. 🙂
Jules says
Yes, although I’ve kinda been falling off the wagon lately. I work in retail, and half the time I’m scheduled in to work when the new collections are released, or I don’t have the money to get them (see – MAC X Julia Petit, MAC X Rocky Horror).
Of course, then when I DO decide to get something from a collection, I find that it’s been released all over the place. For example, I took an hour long bus/train ride to get to a MAC Pro store for the Bao Bao Wan Lavender Jade lipstick… then found out the MAC counters in two of the local malls were carrying it (it was supposed to be a free standing store only collection, too).
Kirsten says
I’m not a big Mac fan, so I don’t go after the Mac LEs, but I have hunted down a few Christmas gift sets for myself, and there’s one thing I’m stalking on ebay right now, but my heart won’t be broken if I can’t get it.
Talkerblogger says
I am , but only for things that are truly exceptional. I don’t go buying every limited edition item out there
gio says
Not really. I buy what I love and know will use, regardless of whether it is limited edition or not. If not, all the better, so I can repurchase it again and again. Besides, as you said, most LE products aren’t that unique. A similar shades will always pop up sooner rather than later.
Ruth says
There were only two collections that were LE that I went bananas over was MAC’s Wonder Woman & Rocky Horror. I’m still trying to get the polishes from RHPS at the local CCO. The rest so far, I could take or leave.
Elena says
I love limited edition products! Often times they get cute/gorgeous packaging or designs and I am a sucker for packaging. I’m thinking of the Chanel Dentelle Preciuese highlighter from the summer with the lace pattern. And the upcoming bronzer they are launching! I also bought aGivenchy bronzer last summer with a pretty embossed pattern-that one was awesome because the bronzer itself was a permanent product but the limited edition one had a way better price per ounce of product. I just acquired the Givenchy Le Rouge Couture Edition-the lipstick case is a beautiful floral pattern.
The only downside is when limited edition products aren’t re-promotes of items and you really love the shade. I bought Tom Ford’s Guillermo from the lips and boys collection and bought another backup because it works so well on me and I love the color! Sadly, all the web chatter I have seen about some of the lips and boys shades coming back have not mentioned Guillermo.
Now, when it comes to stuff like MAC…pass. It’s one of those things that if I get it I get it, if don’t…whatever. I can’t be like some people I see on social media talking about how they are staying up all night for the MAC launch. No way! I have to work and I love my sleep! LOL.
But in the end, I am only going to purchase a limited edition product if I like it and will use it. No sense in having something sit in a drawer to be stared at!
gabis says
Not.even.a.tiny.bit. I hate LEs to be honest. All that craziness is why companies keep releasing poor quality products in LE collections. The only chase I’ve been on was for MAC’s Julia Petit collection and it was awful and frustrating.
Jennifer X says
Not much into the LE chase unless it’s something that I think is really special or interesting, like the Alluring Aquatics packaging, but only picked out three items that I know I will use.
Jenn says
I truly only care about quality. I love some pretty packaging but I’m not buying anything til I read the reviews and see some serious swatches. I agree with other commenters that LE products often equal poor quality over and over again.
Jen says
I do like some of the MAC limited edition pieces, but for what they are not that the mere fact they are LE. I really wanted one of the Julia Petit lipsticks, but sold out before I got home from work. I’m seriously tired of that – it’s really turning me off. I wonder why they bother with the hype because it’s satisfying so few people and ticking off so many.
Lily says
I don’t really chase after LE items and especially not MAC but LE Guerlain bronzers kill me. They are so beautiful! I am quite selective when it comes to purchasing makeup so I have to make sure I don’t regret it later 🙂
Fran says
I voted ‘no’, even though I do occasionally try to pick up something from one of the collections, and in fact will probably try to buy ‘Royal Wink’ from the MAC Mia Moretti and Philip Treacey collections, because that’s a color that I love, that you don’t see all that often in that kind of formula, and I read a review that the quality of it is good. But it’s going to be inconvenient, or at least a bit of a project, for me to try to purchase it, and that’s annoying.
I’ve actually gotten a bit turned off by the way some companies (MAC is one) are doing some of their LE collections in a super-exclusive way, like releasing an awesome eye shadow palette (like the large Brooke Shields one) in such limited quantities that it sells out in minutes online and my local counter gets exactly one palette, which of course is snapped up immediately or has even been reserved by someone. Lots of us don’t have the kinds of time and budgets that allow for hovering over a web site for hours waiting for something to pop up and then shelling out lots of $$ for makeup we haven’t had a chance to check out in person to see if it really suits us. The process starts to feel very elitist. Which is perhaps the point. Which turns me off. I actually visit my local MAC counter less and less because of this kind of thing. I don’t go (a very short way) out of my way because I’m pretty sure they’re not going to have what I want to look at, anyway. So I guess they gain some fanatical followers but lose other potential customers. I’m pretty sure that their marketing people tell them this and that they’re not really interested in me as a customer. Too bad for them, since I like bright colors and buy a lot of makeup.
Melissa R says
I am, but not so much with mac. Although I really wish I had gotten a few things from the alluring aquatic collection, big regrets there! I’m more so with limited editiom eyeshadow palettes, like the UD Vice 3 and recently the Nars dual intensity palette that I lusted after but managed to avoid splurging on until I saw it was out of stock on the spaceNK website and I immediately panic bought it from frasers that minute. Still happy I did though 🙂 With some of the mac stuff, I guess it’s a bit annoying when its a repromote. Can’t really justify buying something purely for the different packaging ya know?
Kim says
You know how boring I am so I don’t really get excited about LE stuff but, I would absolutely buy something for the packaging. Even if I didn’t like/never used the product inside. I’d be like your Mom, putting things out for decoration instead of using them. 🙂
JenJ says
I used to be but now I’m like meh. Especially when a lot of limited edition stuff looks like stuff brand already have in their regular line. I’ve noticed this a lot with MAC and their stuff sells out so doggone quickly. At least with other brands you can shop their limited edition stuff without a whole lot of pressure. Even the limited edition shenanigans and the drugstore has gotten on my last good nerve because not all brands are at a stores or some collections are limited to one drugstore. But that doesn’t mean the store in your area will have it. Yep I’m over it.
Poo@beautyandmakeupmatters says
I love LE pacakgings but the higher prices and limited availability makes it hard for me to grab those.. 😛 ..
Though if given a chance to hoard i wouldnt mind stocking them up.. but it should be as pretty as MAC Archies or this Simpsons collection 😉
Lorraine says
I am not into the crazy interweb crashing kind of MAC LE chase. But when it comes to high end, LE nail polish…honey, I would be right there in line with you at the Chanel counter if they repromoted Jade, or any of the legendary now gone from counters and go for an arm and a leg on ebay! Give me one of each and a backup bottle, as well.
Mel says
I will buy LE products (especially nail polish) if I happen to come across them, but I won’t chase after them if I don’t. I can’t afford it, anyway, and I feel like it’s just playing into marketers’ hands.
Chanel… well, maybe.
