I don’t think there’s anything better than spending a Sunday afternoon reading and drinking tea.
I am totally hooked on Bella’s blog for its witty, helpful posts and her fun contests. I just took the Sex and the City quiz, which entered me into a contest to attend an exclusive pre-screening of the Sex and the City movie. To enter the contest, log on to the site and take the SATC quiz — you have until 11:59 pm tonight. Don’t worry if you’re rusty on your SATC trivia; no matter how you score on the quiz, you’re still entered to win.
The Host, by Stephanie Meyer
I’m a big fan of Stephanie Meyer, the woman behind the Twilight series of novels. So, they’re young adult books … but I love young adult books. Twilight’s a love story about a teenage girl and her vampire boyfriend. The Host, Meyer’s first book for actual grownups, deals with an alien invasion on earth. Do you suppose alien invaders care about dark circles? I guess I’ll find out!
Allure’s June 2008 issue
I’m looking forward to reading Allure’s Secret Beauty Finds story, which supposedly discusses where the hair and makeup pros shop. I’ll let you know if I find out anything good! I also really liked Jessica’s cover look with purple shadow. I’m going to attempt to recreate it this week. Oh! And did you know Allure.com has a beauty blog called the Daily Beauty Reporter?
I am always curious about what other people like to read, and I can never resist checking out the bookshelves and magazine racks in the homes of people I know, LOL.
What’s on your current reading list? Is it a steamy romance, an O-chem book (*snooze*) or an issue of US Weekly?
Do you ever get the blues on Sunday? I’m not at all ready for Monday, ya’ll. I sure could use five more days of weekend.

Ahh I love the Twilight series. Can’t wait for the fourth one this August! Let us know what you think of the Host.
Right now I’m reading Rebel Angels. It’s the second in this series that has no name. The first book is A Great and Terrible Beauty. I just saw it randomly in the library so picked it up. Can’t read them quick enough! Which is nice because my hands hurt from crocheting and reading is a nice break.
Good luck on your Monday. 🙂

Hi Bridget,
I’ve read A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels, too. I liked them both!
How is your blanket coming along? Are you almost done?
Marisol says
I ♥ Team Sugar. That is definitely one of my daily reads.
What is on my reading list? Fun stuff – Allure, Glamour, Vogue and People. Non-fun reading – manual on internal controls… Guess which one I will be reading first? hahahaha
I so have the case of the blues. I spent the day in SF with my friends and even though it was a bit foggy, we had a wonderful lunch at Sam’s Cafe and wondered through Union Street. Got to go into the Lush store and did some damage. So many people out in SF especially due to Bay to Breakers.
I don’t want it to be Monday.

Well, aside from being a total beauty bloghound, I’ve recently gotten way into my local library, so my recent reads include “The Devil Wears Prada” (by Lauren Weisberger), “The Outlaw Demon Wails” (LOVE Kim Harrison’s books!), “Uglies” and “Pretties” (“Specials” is on my waiting list — all by Scott Westerfeld and thanks for the rec!), “A Lick of Frost” (Laurel K. Hamilton) , “Kitty and the Silver Bullet” (Carrie Vaughn) and finally “Iron Kissed” (Patricia Briggs)! I’ve also got the new Allure ready to thumb through! Woot! I love an excess of reading material! 🙂
Spent the day visiting with my family at my uncle’s in Santa Rosa, it was very pleasant!
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
I totally forgot this weekend was the Bay to Breakers… I love that run. I’ve done that race with all the important boys in my life, it seems: my brother, my hub, my best guy friend from high school. Next year, hopefully, I’ll get it together training-wise to run it.
Sounds like you had a fun day with your friends, and I’m glad you got to enjoy your date with them.
I don’t want it to be Monday, either. The weekend went by way too quickly.
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
You’ve got to watch the movie with Ann Hathaway. There’s lots of great clothes in it, too!
Anyhoo, wow, that’s a lot of books! How wonderful! 🙂
Was it hot up in Santa Rosa? It finally cooled down here, thank gawd.
Bridget says
The blanket is coming along well! Not near finished, but it’s going along faster than normal. One of these days I swear I’ll make a blanket for myself!haha
I’ve often looked at those books, Uglies and Pretties… they are good?
While I’m here, do you know any really good but not terribly expensive hair smoothers? I need some help.haha

I totally read Allure! It was a good issue this month, although I didn’t like Jessica’s makeup on the cover. A smoky eye with a purple that borders on reddish? Makes her look bruised! She’s totally pregnant, she should be glowing!
But nevertheless, it’s a good read! I also get Glamour each month too. I’m subscribed to Glamour and Allure. I like Glamour more, but they’re both fun and have a lot on makeup and scientific stuff about cosmetics.
I’m not subscribed to it, but I often also pick up In Style. Generally In Style has more pages, and has more clothes stuff.
Mariahs last blog post..Finally got a book I ordered.

I just finished reading Paula Begoun’s 7th edition of “Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me” (just read about the brands I can buy here in EU and some I can buy when I go to New Orleans) and started on Terry Prattchett’s discworld book “the colour of magic” 🙂

The Twilight Series are cool. Just read them in December or so and they’re really good. Let me know if The Host is any good?
I’ve read a lot of books for English this year, among my favourites were Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights (or Golden Compass in US) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer (I highly recommend this book, it’s brilliant and it reads very easily)
So now I’m reading and studying all of my course books *pout* I want more fiction to read

Karen, my roommate finally asked me about makeup which made me so happy! I counted as my success to convert homegirl into a makeup addict heehee 😉 Already she wanted to get a kabuki brush and some makeup for herself. This is the same girl who didn’t let me do her makeup for a presentation.
Talking about books, I’m going to get myself Katie Black’s book “Basic Black”. I skimmed through the first chapter and it’s very inspirational.

unfortunately for me, my current reading list is my exam notes. corporate planning.. huff huff.. i rather read beauty hahaha
Karen says
Hi Bridget,
That’s what I tell myself too about making a knitted blanket. I want to make a soft, fluffy one to have on the couch, but I just never get around to doing it!
I preferred Uglies a bit more than Pretties. For a sequel, Pretties isn’t bad. I really didn’t enjoy the third book in the series, Specials. There’s even a fourth called Extras but I can’t get myself to read it.
Hmm, are you looking for something to smooth your hair after you flat iron it to give it shine? Or just something to get rid of the frizz?
Karen says
Hi Mariah,
I like In Style too. Lately, I’ve also been liking Real Simple, because I like it’s simple design and how it’s laid out.
I haven’t read Glamour in a while! That’s one that I go to the book store and read while I’m sitting in the cafe 🙂
Karen says
Hi Ditte,
I have Paula’s book one on my shelf but haven’t gotten around to reading it. Why do you travel to New Orleans? Is it for work or to visit relatives?
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
Sure thing, girl! So far it’s good — I’ve just finished chapter 5. The writing is very Meyer-esque (aka somewhat long winded) but am still enjoying it.
I saw the movie version of The Golden Compass with Nicole Kidman a few months ago. I will have to pick up that book along with Incredibly Close. Thanks for the recommendations! Yay, summer reading. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jana,
Your book sounds kinda interesting! For reals!
What kind of work do you do? Or are you a student?
Karen says
Hi Dao,
WOOT to your roommate seeing the light! Soon you’ll have that girl blending colors in her outer V! 😉
I saw Katie Black interviewed a few months ago and thought about getting her book. Tell me if you end up liking it!
Karen says
Hi Ping,
Good luck on your exams! Do you have finals soon?
Glosslizard says
I do want to see the movie now!
Yeah, I’ve been having so much fun splurging at the library! Talk about guilt-free! 🙂
Santa Rosa was actually quite nice, even at the hottest part of the day, there was a nice cool breeze blowing through the house! Then we got to drive through the incoming fog-bank on the way home! Aaaaaah, refreshing!
And, OMG, MAC 217=Awesomeness!!!
Amanda says
Hey Karen!
I was visiting family out of state this weekend, and had some fresh reading material for the airport/plane….InStyle (which I’ll only pick up if I like the cover or are travelling) and Uglies (finished it last night, very good. and yeah, I’m a grown up and love young adult novels too). Love Meg Cabot! I’ve found a few authors I like, in more than one genre (gotta love the library). Carol Higgins Clark-easy mystery series / Marian Keyes-British chick lit / Nicolas Sparks. I’ll give most chick lit authors a try, and I’ve been really into historical fiction recently.
Karen B says
I’ve heard that Golden Compas the book is 20x better than the movie (haven’t seen the movie) and Extremely loud is just heartbreakingly funny. It’s brilliant. One of my best finds in ages (and I’m counting my favourite book of all times, Atonement in that)

Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
The movie is a lot of fun. It’s a great chick flick to watch with a girlfriend!
I had a feeling you’d be loving on the 217! 🙂
Next up? The 266… awwwww yeah!
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Oh! I haven’t read any Meg Cabot, but I see her books all over the place. What’s your favorite?
I really love young adult novels, too. I work for a book agent and she told me once that she believes that one day a teen book will spontaneously pour out of me. I really hope that’s true, LOL!
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
Is your fave book the one they based the movie with Kiera Knightly on?
I have a few favorite books of all time… the list seems to always get longer!
Ditte says
Hi Karen,
I visit N.O. about once a year because I have a friend living there – I chatted with her for years and years, and finally visited her for the first time half a year after Katrina.
She’s the best of friends, and I miss her all the time, and visiting her is also a great excuse to buy US make-up. Next time, in fall, we’ll go to the giant outlet mall in Alabama and look at make-up 🙂
Karen says
Hi Ditte,
Wow, that’s amazing that the internet can bring people in different parts of the world together like that. You are really blessed to have such an amazing friendship! Really great friends are so hard to come by…
Before you go in the fall you’ll have to show me your makeup list! I can throw in my 2cents for things that you’ve gotta check out!
Melissa says
Hi Karen,
I just bought The Host after I saw your blog. I love the Twilight series and I didn’t know she had another book. I’m so pumped. I can’t wait to read it. Thank you!!!

Hi Melissa!
I didn’t know she had a new book out, either. I found the book totally by accident (plus, it was on sale, WOOT!). It feels a little bit like finding treasure, yah?
Let me know when you start reading it. Book group time! 🙂
Ditte says
Hi Karen,
would appreciate that 🙂
Although, my boyfriend insists that we won’t go to as many make-up counters this time as we did last time – we kind of used most of the 2 weeks tracking down Urban Decay, Too Faced, Cargo and Shu Uemurra. He finally started calling Shu: Shoo – you moron! as he grew tired of driving from counter to counter 😉
Karen says
Hi Ditte,
No problem! I’d love to help out your in your makeup hunt!
Wow, your boyfriend is a trooper. That boy deserves and award or something! El Hub ends up looking like he’s going to pass the eff out when I drag him to just one counter, ha ha ha.
Shu is so awesome. I want every shade of eyeshadow there is!
Ditte says
Hi Karen,
just use El Hub this way – as many minutes you use waiting in a hardware store, as many minutes he has to wait for you at a make-up counter 😉
