Hi, love. Someone out here needs a few days of meow time…
I’ve been feeling kinda blue lately and very overwhelmed, and I think I need a little time to reflect and “fill my well.”
It’s a combination of fatigue, partly due to insomnia, and getting older, and not being able to do all of the things I want to do, some of them life decisions, some related to blogging, some related to household things, like the fact that I still have an unfurnished dining room filled with cardboard boxes and cleaning supplies after having moved in more than three years ago.
The posts may be more picture driven for a little while — just until I can get my feet back under me. I hope that’s okay. It’s about all I can handle right now, but I can’t/don’t want to leave you in the beauty lurch.
I’m still here, though, still thinking about you and wishing you well.
Love you.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Karen I don’t remember you ever taking any time off from blogging in the 4 years I’ve been reading MBB. Even when you go on vacations you post, so take the time! You deserve it!
Fieran says
Oh Karen, please get some rest. It’s alright. We’ll be fine for a few days without some posts 🙂 Do take some time out for yourself to recharge and rest, even if it’s just to sip a cup of tea, do nothing, and let your thoughts wander.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, as there are only so many hours in a day.
Take care *HUG*

Take your time. I think everybody deserves time to rest and do the things that they want/need to do. I think I speak for many when I say we will all be here because we love ya! It’s summer hang at the pool and drink an adult beverage with your lunch and read a book until you fall asleep. Ok maybe thats my idea of fun…but you know what I mean. DO YOU:)

Sending hugs and good thoughts your way!

I had anxiety for a while when I was a kid, then this past april, it came full force again. I don’t know how I over came it, just day after day it got better. It still comes and goes, but I can keep it under control. I don’t know if you are going through a similar thing, but it does get better. I’ll be praying for you.

Even if your posts mainly consist of photos for a while, they’re lovely photos and I don’t think anyone will mind 🙂 definitely take as long as you need, we all go through ruts once in a while but you’re lucky you have such a seemingly wonderful support group with your family, hubby, and Tabs. Feel better!
Erica says
Aw Karen! Whenever I’m feeling down, I always visit MBB because you always post something that makes me smile (cats+makeup=my heaven). Also, I’m surrounded by unpacked moving boxes in my office/dining room that have been there way too long so it’s not just you!
All your followers will understand if you need a break because we see how much work you do!
PS Give Tabs some extra tummy rubs! 🙂

Hi Karen, sweetheart! So sorry to read that you are feeling blue…take your time, take the pressure off and just do what you want. Maybe something with nature…I really like hiking…the nature calms me and really gives me positive energy… and don’t be hard on yourself, ok?
Katherine G says
You are awesome Karen! Sorry to read that you are feeling blue…I’ve been there, too. In fact, going through a little of it now so I sympathize. I’m going through the “where is life taking me?” part…my next career step is not easy at all and it’s hard to keep my head up and keep going at times. I sympathize with you. If it helps, take what’s bothering you one step at a time. Start making a place for the stuff in the dining room, for example. I get overwhelmed when it’s a lot at once, too, and it helps to break everything down into one thing at a time, one step at a time.
Sending you lots of hugs and happy thoughts 🙂 Thinking of you!
Alison says
Hi Karen, Hang in there woman. You are such a talented writer and a beautiful spirit. Sending positive vibes up your way, and hoping you feel better soon.

Karen, I’m so sorry you’ve been feeling blue lately. I did notice recently that you churned out so many great posts, back to back, within hours… and it did cross my mind that you’ve been working way too hard. We readers appreciate how much you give and share, but we do want you to be well and enjoy your life, too. Take some time to recharge, reflect, and “evolve” (I have your lipgloss in my bag!). No matter what you do or how your blog evolves, we’ll always be here for you. I hope this break gives you time to find clarity, peace, and comfort from the things that have made your heart ache or feel heavy. Big hugs to you, El Hubs, and Tabs!
Rainy Days & Lattes says
*hugs* Relax and enjoy your weekend. Don’t stress yourself too much. Tabs should give you a few days off being the cool boss he is 😉

ps says
Hi Karen! I can totally relate and I’m sorry that you are feeling a little down. I know that fatigue and insomnia can really do a # on your mind. 🙁 I have insomnia and I have to try really hard to keep things in perspective and rest when I can. I can relate to the getting older affecting you. Most birthdays never bother me, but this year I felt it and I can see age finally catching up, arggg! Also, I believe it was worse this year because I’m pretty stressed out about work and worrying about my family. It’s hard growing up and aging and it’s hard not being able to accomplish all the things that you want to do in life.
I will pray for you. Feel better soon. Please don’t ever decide to give up blogging. I really enjoy your site.
Jill says
awww… ::hugs:: we’ll all be here waiting for you when you get back in the swing of things! chin up girl, we love you too!
Kate Williamson says
I just turned 40 in May and I can totally relate to how you are feeling. Someone once told me when I was feeling really overwhelmed with Life that there are three things that you must do and everything else will fall into place. 1) Every day, you must run the dishwasher. 2) Every day, you must take out one bag of garbage. 3) Every day, you must do one load of laundry. I have found that when I follow her advice and do these three things, life does seem more manageable and things do tend to sort themselves out. Take care and shoulder squeeze to you, Karen!
Bisbee says
Take the time you need. I have a feeling that you think you need to make some decisions about your personal life…but don’t beat yourself up.
You are truly a gifted writer and photographer, and the posts you put together regarding Tab’s modeling career blow me away. Take pride in your accomplishments, and take the time you need to reflect.
Ana B. says
Take the time and get whatever help you need to get your to do list done. I’ll miss you and your amazing blog but it’s far more important to relax and do what’s right for you. I’ll be here when you get back.
joods says
Karen…It’s pretty clear from these posts that we all love you, and will be here for you. Take whatever time you need because doing what’s best for you is the priority.
I hope rather than keeping thoughts/concerns churning inside your head, you get it out by talking with someone. Friends and loved ones are a good place to start. But don’t forget that talking with a professional counselor/therapist can be an option to help you create a path to where you want to be.
Sending you hugs,
joods
Gina says
Feel better too! I deal with episodes of insomnia too, I wake up at 3am everyday. I can fall asleep- no problem…staying asleep is difficult. Too many nights of that and EVERYTHING becomes overwhelming, at times. Take care of yourself & Hang in there
Futuralon says
Girl, take a break! Breaks are underrated. You deserve it.
As far as your dining room have your hub share the following jobs with you. Remove everything from room (cleaning supplies go in kitchen/bathroom/laundry/closet and stay there). Measure the room. Buy a table with chairs and a bookshelf from a store from where you own other furniture. Now put your boxed possesions on the bookshelf – you’re officially moved in! Get a dinner delivered or to go and serve it on your nice dishes. Eat with your babe. Now you’re enjoying your dining room 🙂 Save decorative touches for once you have a “feels for” the room.
Katie says
I hope I’m not too late in echoing everyone’s love for you! The site makes us smile everyday, but it shouldn’t, in any way, overwhelm YOU. Take that break and come back conquering, Karen.
gio says
I hope you will feel better soon. And don’t worry, just take all the time you need. We’ll be here when you come back.
V says
I can also relate. Turned 38 a couple of days ago and feeling blue as well.

Albertina says
I always wondered how you managed to post so many items since it requires a lot of work and inspiration. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Everbody needs a break now-and-then and we all love you for what you do and who you are anyway. You deserve more Karen-time, so take it easy girl.
Minnegirl says
Karen, like everyone said, we love you and your posts always brighten my day too. Take the time you need……things will get sorted out. We are all thinking of you and wishing you the best. Give Tabs some extra tummy rubs! 🙂

Anyways, take as much time as you need and think about what direction you want to go to…I hope you won’t stop blogging because your blog is always one of the best moments of my day and I love your sense of humor. But do whatever is right for you, I’ll be thinking of you! Hugs!!

Sara says
You deserve to be happy… Hire a decorator if you want 😉 and take some holiday .
You are talented and inspiring. I follow your blog since a long time ago and you brighten my days. Thanks a lot for that. I will send you positive thoughts. I know ppl are already giving you a lot of advice, but I really need to tell you that you don’t need to do a pause to get better. Do the things you have been postponing. Just do them, without worrying abt whether you might have done them better. Take decisions, even if they are not the best. Once you do that, the pain will ease.
Lots of kisses.
Kim says
Hey, meow. Meow, you take all the time you need to feel better. No excuses, meow. Meow’s the time to recharge and regroup. Meow. 🙂 I hope you’ll appreciate the caring mixed with a little Super Trooper humor. 🙂
Seriously, though, feel better, Karen. You’re awesome just the way you are. And, coming from someone who removed wallpaper 4 years ago and still has bare white walls to show for it, just know that that stuff doesn’t matter. Do what makes you happy. And if you don’t feel happy unpacking boxes or buying furniture/decorating, don’t do it! It’s your house and life is too short to worry about stuff like that. It’ll be done when you’re good and ready to do it. And if that’s never, then so be it. 🙂 Seriously, you’re fantastic and bring a smile to so many people’s faces just by being you. Please don’t be discouraged about the little things. 🙂

Gurl we understand! We all have a list of things we need to do that seems like it never gets done. I’ve been in my house for 8years, and I still have unpacked boxes in my guest house! A lot of them behind the sofa, lol! I don’t think you ever get “done” with all the things you want to do because life continually adds more to the list! We ALL struggle everyday! Work on the important stuff and don’t be too hard on yourself! We support you, your post help us forget our troubles!
Stephanie R says
Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon. I completely understand the insomnia…it’s hard to get anything done when all you want to do is sleep, especially when you need to go to work at the same time. It’s exhausting. Take all the time you need. We’ll all be here when you come back.
Jenna N. says
Totally understandable! It’s time for you to take care of yourself. We’ve been so lucky that you have posted so constantly for the past few years, whereas many bloggers take extended breaks from blogging and you never have! I say stop blogging all together if you really need to, and we’ll all be waiting patiently for your triumphant return! =)

Aw, no worries! I know how you feel.
I’m so impressed by all the time and work you invest in this blog.

Hugs to you and hope you’re feeling better soon! I do enjoy MBB so very much, and as I’ve read it for several years now, feel as if you’re a friend. Please take care of yourself, and know that I’ll be praying for you to be peaceful and happy with your world. Meditating while rubbing a husky kitty’s belly always helps me 🙂

Awww, Karen–I’m so sorry that you’re going through a rough spell right now with so much on your mind. When I found your blog a couple years ago, I was just coming out of a rough patch that seemed to go on forever with all major life decisions (and a first career crash) simultaneously. Your blog was one of a handful that dealt with things I’d always been interested in, but had never taken the time to research and really served as a pick-me-up and good resource starting point whenever I research a product.
So thank you for the pick-me-up, because I needed it at the time.
As for life in general, I’m sure that you might be getting some unsolicited advice: some really good, some eyeroll-worthy (it’s just the nature of the beast). Here’s mine:
Please know deep down that you, as you are, are enough. Whatever it is that you choose to prioritize in your life is absolutely OK–this is your life to live. And if you have regrets about anything, don’t be afraid of regrets, either. To have them is to show that you really have lived, and is just indicative of the fact that life has so many pathways, so many options, and so many things that really are not in our locus of control.
Take care of yourself, and do whatever you need to do. There a lot of people who do know you personally and who don’t know you personally who are pulling for you. We’ll be here if/when you’re ready to come back.
In the meantime, whenever I see a great food truck in my neck of the woods with great Asian and vegetarian food, I’ll eat an extra helping for you. 🙂
Emma RZ says
Karen, I hope that it all works out and that you are happy with whatever decisions you need to make. Kisses xx

Karen, forget about us! I know how things can become overwhelming. Perhaps you need to step away from deadlines and feelings of “I HAVE to do this” and think about the positives in your life and what makes you happy and content. Best wishes for peace of mind.

Karen, you are an incredible woman and at the very least you deserve some time to yourself. Take care and feel better soon xx

It’s good to give yourself permission to take a break, you owe it to yourself. Your obligation should be to yourself and your family first and foremost. You need to replenish first before you can give of yourself to others.

I’ve always enjoyed your blog not only for the reviews but your humor and sunny disposition. I too am going through a stressful period trying to finish my degree and trying not to freak out about finding employment after! One of my friends gave me some good advice which is just to allow yourself some time in that “in between” phase and know that you will be ready to take on that new challenge when the time comes. We all need downtime to reflect before we move forward. If you follow your passion, no matter how hard it might be, you will be satisfied because you didn’t compromise or give up.
I tell myself that all the time and it helps me celebrate my small victories without getting overwhelmed by the big picture.

Hello Karen,
I have been regularly reading your blog for about three years now. I wish that I could write something witty & meaningful to brighten your day. You have always done that for me in your blog. All I can let you know is that I do appreciate your work, everything – the cute pictures of Tabs, all of the time you spend testing products and answering so many post.
For a couple of years I didn’t have someone to talk makeup with. I have checked into this blog and it is such a great place on the net that you have created. I hope that you can tell from all of the wonderful post that people have been writing above.
So no matter how long you need, we will be there to read or happily see your writing and pictures.
Thank you and I am wishing you the best.

Totally understand Karen! Take care of yourself, sleep in and recharge. We all have to take a time-out once in a while. It’s a challenge to stay present sometimes. I get way ahead of myself, and I literally visualize a STOP sign in my head to bring me back to the moment. And I had to laugh at your comment about the unfurnished room and boxes. Um, I’ve been painting my kitchen for over a year!!!! The paint cans are just where I left them last May LOL. And I only work part-time! Hope that makes you laugh a bit. I’m 41 and I’ve been suffering from insomnia for the past 5 years. It’s a bitch. I hope you find a solution as I know how hard it can be. Valerian really helps me some nights, but it smells to high heaven. I recommend the capsule form, cuts down on the smell a bit. Your blog always makes my day, it brings a smile to my face every time I see Tabs in action. You’re one of the few blogs I share with my hubby as you seriously crack me up sometimes. I’m sending you a big virtual hug. Thank you for sharing your life and your love of beauty with us. It’s something I yearn to do myself, if I could muster the courage. Take good care and know your faithful will be here. If you ever make it to Long Beach, I’d love to meet you for gelato and coffee, on me! 🙂

I think we’ve all been through that “needing meow time” period. Just do whatever you need to do to feel like yourself again. And if it helps any, I’ve lived in my place for 9 years and have boxes in the closet that I never unpacked. Obviously I don’t believe in that rule that says if you don’t use something for a year you don’t need it. Just take your time, try to do some fun and relaxing things. 🙂

Karen, I’m sending hugs your way. I’ve been feeling crappy lately, also. I totally relate on the unfinished house front. We’re in remodel/total gut hell & have been for about a year and a half. If it makes you feel better, we have a whole house unfinished. It’s driving us crazy, causing arguments, and costing too much. If you’ve ever seen The Money Pit movie with Tom Hanks ans Shelley Long, that’s our life. Everything that can go wrong has. Let’s just try to keep our heads above water together, ok?

Karen! We will always be here for you…through thick or thin eyebrows, through bright or neutral eye shadows, through glossy or matte lipstick, through slick or poofy hair ( and not to forget Lloyd Christmas!), grumpy or grumpier Tabs, and El Hub adventures…we may not know you personally but somehow your good heart shines through your blog and that makes you loved by all! Sending hugs your way!

Hi Karen! I can kind of relate to how you are feeling right now! I am having a hard time figuring out what I am suppose to do with my life. I’m still in college even though I graduated from high school 6 years ago.. :/ I’m a Junior but I am having these major questions and problems such as what the hell am I going to do with the rest of my life?! I know they say not to stress so much about what you major in school since everyone ends up working in a field that’s totally irrevelent to their major… But I would like to at least major in something that can help me get a decent job somehow..I gotta feed my beauty addiction! My best friend passed away on Valentine’s Day from ovarian cancer this year.. she was only 25…so ever since she passed away to a place of no suffering, I have had a major overhaul in my emotions and thoughts and trying to see my life differently now that she is gone. For some reason if you can go to a beach or just by water…and take in the salty air, and take in the waves crashing along the shore. For me it helped just soothe my soul if only temporary and it just put me at ease that my woes are like waves… they will come in and go, but it’s a pretty site to witness. It helped me kind of put myself back together knowing that everything will work out somehow and it’s all about the process to getting there! I hope you get to feeling better soon!!

Hello Karen!
It’s been almost three years since I’ve found your blog and started following it and I thank you for the many advice you’ve given me beauty-wise (and not).
I’m sorry to read that you’re going through a difficult time, but I’m sure that I’ll pass and don’t worry for the blog. Focus on the decisions you said you have to make and take the time to dedicate yourself to more urgent things, like unboxing and putting together your dining room.
I know it sounds almost crazy for someone very into beauty… but really beauty and beauty products can wait, there comes a time (and not only once in a lifetime) when other things have absolute priority on others that we consider important.
Take care Karen,
I send you all my support from Italy.

Hi Karen! Love your blog. Hope you get to feeling better – trust me, you will. I went through a bout of insomnia after I had my daughter, and it sucks BIG TIME. I developed anxiety and OCD. With therapy, I talked through my stuff and can handle it all so much better. We just moved out to Seattle from Texas, so I’m being tested for sure. Just remind yourself that things will get better, and you are doing a great job right now.
