He asks: “So, what do you do for fun?”
She replies: “Well, I like to go hiking, eat sushi, go dancing…”
Last week, during dinner at one of my favorite Thai restaurants, there was a couple sitting next to me who were clearly on a first date. My nosy ass couldn’t help but eavesdrop on their conversation between bites of yellow chicken curry (what can I say? I multi-task) and spring rolls. The boy hailed from Texas and liked indie rock; the girl liked to meditate and go hiking. They looked cute together, but there were several awkward moments of silence during which both of them sat there, obviously nervous, nibbling away at the Pad Thai for way too long.
It got me thinking about the-getting-to-know-you stage of friendships and relationships…
9 Random Things My Friends Know About Me
- I hate earthworms. No, I don’t just hate them. The very thought of earthworms makes me physically sick (I’m cringing right now). They are among the grossest things on the planet and disgust me on a great many levels. I hate how they squirm, how slimy they look, and I hate their nasty little turtlenecks.
- I am not a morning person.
- I was in a bad rollerblading accident involving a hill, a deaf elderly lady, a flock of slow moving ducks and a patch of ivy. What occurred was both startling and unpleasant.
- My first car was a red ’95 Honda Civic with black interior and NO AIR CONDITIONING.
- I can square dance.
- I don’t bowl.
- I sing in the car.
- I don’t like hot, spicy food but lurve extra garlic.
- I wore braces in junior high.
How about you? What do your best friends know about you?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Ahhhh, Brendan Frasier! What the heck happened to that tall drink o’ water? He was doing so many films and then, poof, he disappeared.
Dragons are rad. I like ’em too. When I was young my dad would always say the same thing when before I went to sleep: “I hope you dream of dragons.”
Karen says
Heya Megan,
Come to think if it, I’ve never operated a lawnmower, either. I have no desire to get near any equipment that can potentially remove appendages in the front yard.
My brother is a Jelly Belly fiend. How do you feel about the popcorn flavored ones? He hates them and he always gives them to me because they are my fave flavor.
Karen says
Hiya Sweety_heart!
I play piano too…not as much any more, it’s been a few years. I played from the age of 4 until I was a teenager (mostly against my will, LOL).
I don’t know a ton about anime but my hub reads ’em and has a ton of anime drawing books. Chibi’s and furries are the CUTEST!
Karen says
Hi Breezy,
I love shoes too. Half my closet is made up of them. I have so many hot 3 inch heels that I barely wear anymore, sigh (I don’t have to dress up for work, so I end up in Adidas Shelltoes 99% of the time). Do you have a favorite pair?

Girl, every time I pet goats at the petting zoo I straight up get eaten. They attack my clothes every single time! I’ve had many a shirt chewed on, it’s the weirdest thing.
Ahhh, yes, the rollerblading story. I’m gonna have to leave that to your imagination, but basically, no birds were hurt, and gravity played a BIG PART in the equation.
I don’t rollerblade anymore, by the way!
Karen says
Hey Chamayne,
Family Guy, LOL. Both my brother and my hub love that show so I’m periodically subjected to it. Gotta say though that who ever writes it has a sick, sick mind, and well, I kinda enjoy it.
Karen says
Ha, Babyu21, you just made me laugh!
I am the worst speller, too. And what’s doubling annoying is that people automatically assume that just because you’re a writer you’ve got oh so stellar spelling skills but I have to say that is not the case for me. I was one of the kids that never won a spelling bee (although my best friend did in junior high) and was straight up eliminated in the FIRST ROUND every single time!

DH had some pasta cooking up tonight, so we ate our pasta with a little butter and a generous amount of parmiggano reggiano shavings.
Seriously, if you’re ever in Italy you must spend a couple days in Parma. They have a surprisingly large art museum (took us about 3 hours to get through it), plenty of shoe stores (brought home a brown leather pair of boots), and some wonderful food. Our favorites were the somewhat hard to find “Trattoria Sorelle Picchi” which is only open for lunch and occupies a space behind a cheese & meat shop, PACKED with locals and so delish. We enjoyed dinner at Ristorante Gallo d’Oro so much that we went two out of our three nights there.
I’d kill for some gelato right about now… =)

And girrrrrl, how can you hate ice cream? Is that even possible?
By the way, I’m going to Vegas this weekend. Know of any cool beauty/makeup stores that I should hit up when I’m there?
Karen says
Hi Madeleine,
Oh the irony of you marrying a concert pianist! Gotta love the fates.
I love purses, too. I phased out that obsession recently though, and now commit to carrying one purse for almost all occasions. It’s mostly due to lack of closet space, ha! Otherwise, I’d be all over some Cole Haan totes in a heart beat.
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
Reading your comment just made my stomach rumble like CRAZY!
I have yet to go to Italy but it’s on the top of the list of dream destinations. I’d really like to see the Amalfi Coast, sigh. Parma is now on the list, too.

Hi Sophie,
We went to La Rioja, to a small town right outside of Haro, and to San Sebastian! So far those are the only two places I’ve been to in Spain, but I can’t wait to go back. Hopefully for our anniversary!
I really want to go back to San Sebastian because I passed up on the chance to surf last time I was there, sigh! It was warm but the water was cold and I couldn’t bear to encase myself into a wetsuit.
Your family’s home in Almeria sounds like a nice place. What a great place to spend the holidays.

Hi Zoe,
LOL, how/when did you learn how to unicycle? Was it something you learned just for fun?
That’s awesome you’re related to Fred Astaire. I love watching him dance – he looks like he’s floating!
Karen says
Thanks Tammy 🙂
Your number four cracked me up! It reminded me of Madeleine (who left comment #25), who hates piano but married a pianist. Fate has a twisted sense of humor!

Hi Kristi!
Are you a SATC fan, too!? I’m so excited about the movie! Can’t wait!
zoe says
When i lived in tokyo (i must have been 8-9), at my school during break they were about 50 unicycles and we would all run to try and grab the best one and wed all just cycle around, my first few weeks were spent mostly falling off but by the end of the year i could go forwards/backwards you name i could do it. We all just thought it was the coolest thing. I havent used my unicycle since i left tokyo though so not for about 7 years so im not sure if id still be able to do it… lol
Megan says
The funny thing is that my friends all thought I was weird that I’ve never operated a lawnmower…but I am the youngest in my family…when I was young and thought the lawnmower was cool my parents said I was too young…then it was my older brother’s job…and then when I was a teenage I had no interest whatsoever. So I’ve never mowed the lawn.
BTW my room is rarely messy now…but it used to be…and I would tell my mom that it was useless to clean my room because of the second law of thermodynamics…the universe tends toward entropy…or disorder/randomization. So i would tell her that there was no reason to clean my room because the universe would just mess it up again. My mom would actually laugh at me and I kinda got out of cleaning my room…so for all you who talk about how messy your room is…at least you can have an excuse 🙂
Karen says
That’s so rad. I’m sure you could still do it! Get on that thing, homie. 🙂
I had a friend who wanted to learn how to unicycle before his 30th birthday and needless to say his efforts did not end well. He ended up getting really messed up. Seriously, better to learn when you’re 8 and fearless!
Karen says
Hi Megan,
The law of entropy is happening all over my living room/and my home “office” (aka dining room), arrrghhh!
I’m seriously thinking of asking the boy to send over a cleaning service for my Valentine’s Day present. Now THAT would make me one happy woman.
Megan says
LOL my stepdad got my mom one year worth of biweekly visits from a cleaning service for her 50th birthday…she was in heaven. Seriously…that’s a great gift!
Hmmm…you should hire an assistant…who could be your house cleaner as well as MA distractor when you need covert pictures and swatches.
Karen says
I know, right? Or maybe an “intern”, that way I wouldn’t have to pay them. Or I could pay them in lipgloss, LOL.
Mariana says
1. I love cold, grey weather and hate it when it’s sunny.
2. I can get into the lotus position without using my hands.
3. I have a photographic memory.
4. I consider myself a “modern woman”; but I secretly love Leave it to Beaver and the simplicity of June’s life.
5. I’ve been engaged more than twice.
6. I was an only child for 8 years.
7. I have 2 cats that I adore. One of them is named after Manolo Blahnik (nickname, Noles)
8. When I was a child, I had horrible separation anxiety.
9. While in college, I was on my way out with my boyfriend and slipped on some ice on my porch. I fell on my butt HARD but acted like I was okay. We went out and I passed out from the pain while we were watching Reservoir Dogs. He had to take me to the emergency room and to this day when it rains, my bottom aches.
Megan says
OOOH! Good Idea!!! You should start looking for a summer intern. I wonder though…should you look for a student in cosmetology, web develpoment, marketing, or maybe Biology? 🙂 LOL actually marketing wouldn’t be a bad idea…you could come up with a campaign to increase readers and advertisements etc. LOL Make more money to support your habit. But then you would likely be so busy that you couldn’t respond to every single comment…and remember the details of your readers’ crazy comments.
Hillary says
1. My nickname as a child was “Weensie”
2. I am very good at impressions, and I sometimes break out in random accents for no reason.
3. I love rap.
4. The high school students I work with say that I”m “gangsta” and call me “Young Jeezy” (you have to know that I’m fair-skinned, blue-eyed and blonde to appreciate how funny that is)
5. I have a weird phobia about shocking myself on anything metal in the grocery store, so I go through this bizarre ritual of trying to ground myself before touching the metal handles in the frozen aisle (okay, before you think that I’m OCD, this was caused by an incident where there was an actual arc created from how badly I shocked myself)
6. I once tried a shirt on at H&M in NYC, and couldn’t get out of it (not even the salesgirl could get me out), so I had to buy it with me still in it. I had to actually hop up and lay down on the counter in front of a line of people so they could remove the sensor. Seriously, you can’t write stuff that funny.
7. Vin Diesel is #1 on my top 5 list. He may not be the sharpest knife in the dishwasher, but his rockin’ bod and bald head just do something for me.
8. I am dying to take salsa lessons, but my husband would rather have his eyes plucked out with a rusty spoon than take dance lessons. I would therefore love to have a hot, gay Latino dance partner much like the one in Along Came Polly.
Karen says
Hi Megan,
Oh yah, a marketing intern would work for lipgloss would be rad. No matter how busy I’d get I’d always answer comments. That’s like the best part of the blog! It’s like IM-ing with 20 people at once, LOL.
BTW, I’m kinda like you in that I have a weird knack for details. I remember all these weird things about people, places, things that happened…my friends from high school think that I’m pulling their leg half the time because I’ll totally remember things that they can’t recall at all.
Karen says
Hi Hillary,
SWEET JEEBUS you just made me crack up with your H&M shirt story!
I looove hip hop and rap too. I just realized today that one of things I wanted to write on my list is that I don’t rap in public, not even in front of El Hub. I’ll only do it my car by myself, because seriously, the world doesn’t need to hear me rapping (it’s just too comical).
And recently it finally hit me how funny I must look when I rap in the car. I was waiting for the light when a car pulled up next to me bumping “Let Me Ride” (love that song). Back in neighborhood where I grew up it wouldn’t be a big thing, but where I live now hardly anyone ever bumps Dre at the stoplight. I looked over and I was kinda shocked to see this 40 something dude rapping along to the lyrics, and he was sooo into it. He had facial expressions, hand gestures, EVERYTHING. I mean, I had to give the guy props for really feeling the music, but I couldn’t help but think, “Holy crap, that’s what people see when I’m rocking out in the car!” LOLOL!

9. I love and have a lot of makeup-some friends understand, and some just don’t get it. And sometimes I like to match my eyeshadow and/or lipstick to my outfit (subtlely). I know this is a major fashion faux pas, but it’s fun for me.

I totally get that…like my family even… my mom and my sister are always amazed by my memory. My friends somewhat…LOL like for example I was talking about a particular party from like a year and a half ago…and one of my friends was like what? and I was like remember… I was wearing that turquoise top and you wore those black shorts. She was like…what is wrong with you? LOL I can’t help it.
So last night when I got home my Sephora ad had come, while checking it out I saw the thing about the Lash pimpin’ contest. I already told one of my friends that I think I’m going to have to take a day to play around and enter. Seriously….a trip for two to Paris…and all I have to do to enter is play with make up and put on some false lashes… what could be more fun? 🙂
btw if you want to check it out I put the link as the website.

Karen,
Well girl you know I am like 40! So glam heavy metal was my choice of music in High School!!! I even dressed the part (ripped up tight stirrup leggings and zebra print double breasted blazer with shoulder pads), bleached blonde glam heavy metal hair (you should see my prom picture) — my boyfriend was 21 and in a rock band (he was a drummer). Played with Yngwie Malmsteen (he was Ozzy’s guitar player). Needless to say – my daughters will not date rock stars!!!!
As far as ice cream — I loves me a warm chocolate cake!!! I don’t like anything cold (unless it is like 117 outside). Regarding Vegas — the Venetian has a bad-ass Sephora (but that is nothing new). Vegas has all the same junk as we got — I can’t think of any great make-up stores off the top of my head! Sorry — I haven’t lived there now for like 6 years — check out the outlet mall though!

Hi Karen!
I don’t really know much about makeup stores here except for the Mac Pro at the Caesar’s =) However, we do have a CCO that sells a bunch of goodies. It’s at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet on Charleston. There is also a new mall on Las Vegas Blvd & Sunset Road. I think it’s called Town Square. I haven’t been there yet, but I heard it’s really nice. And if you LOVE you some Sushi.. I highly recommend Sushi Mon =) Have fun in Vegas!!

Coool, new Brendan Frasier flicks! Yay!
Yeah, I found out he’s Canadian after thinking he was Scottish for a while (the name, y’know)! 🙂

Hi Karen,
I forgot to mention.. I’m from Waikele (it’s a part of Waipahu in Oahu) in Hawaii. The home of Filipinos.. haha =) I had to go back to Hawaii for a few months, August through December, to help my mom with her business. I put everything on hold in Vegas so I could go back. MAN! I was spoiled with great weather and good food (Oh, Zippys.. how I miss thee). Where abouts is your family from in Hawaii? I’m just ITCHING to go back!!!

Hi Amanda,
My red Honda has a name, too – “Murray”. He also goes by “Claude,” when he’s feeling fancy. He’s still running (my brother drives him) and will keep on trucking for the next 1,000 years.
BTW – your #6 is a totally legitimate fear. It happened to me once and it was TERRIFYING. Seriously, my life flashed before my eyes and everything. I was afraid I was going to be stuck in there for years.
Karen says
Hi Megan,
Girl, hook that link up. A year from now I’m gonna be like, “Hey, Megan, remember when I asked you to send me the link to the lash pimpin’ contest?” and you’ll say, “Yes.” And of course we’ll be the only two people on this blog who’ll remember that.
I am the farthest thing away from a lash pimp, though. But it’ll give me a chance to practice my skills!
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
Back in the 80s I would’ve thought you were the coolest girl, ever. I so wanted to be metal but had to keep it on the low. I do NOT miss the shoulder pads from the 80s. I keep seeing high fashion pics of women wearing high waisted pants (oh lawd, save us all) and you know what that means…scary shoulder pads are on the immediate horizon, BOO!
Warm chocolate cake! My stomach just rumbled when I read that. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jenny,
OH YES, I loves me some sushi! I will put Sushi Mon on my list of places to eat. Do you have any fave dishes?
Now I’m really hungry…
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I love him in that movie with Alicia Silverstone, “Blast from the Past.” Have you seen it? It’s fun.
I will never be able to forgive him for “Encino Man,” though!
Karen says
Hi Jenny,
They live in Kaneohe. 🙂 My in-laws tell me that the weather hasn’t been so great, and that it’s been raining a ton (although it rains practically every day in Kaneohe, so that ain’t nothing new).
Ah, Zippys. You know what I miss? I miss the pancakes at Boots & Kimos. And the yellow chicken curry bowl at the Thai place in Haleiwa. Oh, and there’s this place up in Manoa in the same shopping center as the Safeway that sells these vegetarian Manapuas that are sooo good. As you can tell, most of my time on the island is spent eating when I’m not surfing!
Karen says
Hi Sugarginger!
It’s so great to meet you. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your list. I love chocolate and cheese, too. They are both my weaknesses when I’m trying to eat healthy.
Regarding your ex, give it time. It’ll take a while, but one day you’ll wake up and as you’re doing something mundane, like brushing your teeth, you’ll realize it doesn’t hurt anymore. Anyway, take good care of yourself and your heart, okay?
Karen says
Hi Mrs. Lynne,
How cute!!! I love the dolls. 🙂 Just make sure the lil ones don’t get a hold of em and start chewing them or anything, oy!
Which quad are you thinking of setting free?
Karen says
Thanks Lea. 🙂 That’s nice of you to offer. I’m kinda swimming in products right now (they’ve overtaken part of my office, I think it’s going to reach critical mass very soon) but will let you know!
Karen says
Hi Aleks,
Sure, no problem. If you ever need SF or Hawaii tips (I got to Oahu a few times a year) just give me a shout!
You bring up a good point. The whole LE factor gets me every. single. time. (I am still kicking myself for not picking up the entire Barbie Collection, boo.)
Hope your week’s been going well. I’m so ready for Friday. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Susanne,
Thanks girl! I’m glad you liked. Did ya snag any Fafi today?
Karen says
LOL, thank you Victoria! 🙂 Crazy Cat Pics 4-ever!
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
Oh! You just reminded me – gotta call the dentist! Thanks girlfriend. This will give me an excuse to reward myself with … hmmm … I’m sure I’ll think of something!
Breezy says
Whaaaaaat?! Karen, stop what you’re doing immediately and go put on your highest friggen heels —- then you might as well crank up the music and do a little jig. You have to bust out your babies once in awhile. Who am I kidding though, I know how that is, I actually I forget I have some fabulous shoes if I haven’t been out in a bit.
ok faves–
Hot pink slingback suede peeptoe shoes – like 4 inches. I heart them to death!!
and then probably runner up to those are my 5 inch, yes 5 INCH black mary jane shoes. Veeeeeeery hot, but so dang tall that I had to get them a whole size bigger so they would stop making me lean forward lol. The things we do for our obcessions.
Karen says
Breezy,
Girl, I know right? I’ve so lost my edge, it ain’t even funny. I used to rock my 3.5 and my 4 inches up and down Market St. in SF and I’d haul serious arse, too. All those years of dancing/frolicking/general mayhem in my heels…sigh! I love high heels because they make me the height I want to be…I’m 5’1 (so tiny) but really in my mind I’m at least 5’5.
Your pink shoes sound CAY-UTE!!! There’s something about peeptones; I loves me some 40’s stylin’.
BernaDiva La Glam says
Oh, Karen. Are you sure you want to know these things?
Nine things you don’t know about me:
1. I once got berries stuck up my nose as a child, and they had to be removed with forceps.
2. I have a half-brother, three-half sisters, and a younger sister.
3. I majored in ballet (but you’d never be able to tell since I’m a chunkster now)
4. I absolutely love MTV reality shows like Laguna Beach and The Hills (oh wait…I think you knew that one already)
5. I am a karaoke whore.
6. I wear a size 10 shoe.
7. I won’t eat bananas, fried chicken skin, or mayonnaise.
8. I won’t move to NYC because that means an 11 hour flight to visit my family.
9. I will buy almost ANYTHING if I think I’m getting a good deal on it.
Hee hee. Fun stuff!
Karen says
Berna!
How come you don’t eat bananas, girl?
BernaDiva La Glam says
Bananas remind me of baby food which reminds me of not-so-nice-things-that-come-out-of-babies. I don’t like.
Although, I’m not as put off by bananas when they are cooked.
Which totally doesn’t make sense, but it is what it is 🙂
