They were definitely huge *pop* hits & still good markers for 80s style. Some club hits of the 80s that I can remember... "Two of Hearts" by Stacey Q, "This Corrosion" by Sisters of Mercy (like I said, it depends what club you're talking about!) If you can get your hands on it, the movie "Modern Girls" (w/ Virginia Madsen & a few others) is a very strong "80s style" movie. So is "Liquid Sky" from earlier in the decade, but that's kind of a terrible movie... (eh, so is "Modern Girls," just in a different way).
