“Oh, my head…” said the big beefsteak tomato plant, “I feel like crap this morning.” Many of its leaves were yellow and speckled brown.
“You big baby!” chortled one of the roma tomato plants nearby. “You don’t even have a head!”
“I don’t?” said the beefsteak plant, genuinely surprised. “Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m sure,” answered the roma plant. “You’re just a stupid plant. I, on the other hand, am sophisticated and wise.”
“Oh…” said the beefsteak. “Do you know why I feel so bad?”
The beefsteak wasn’t doing well. Unlike the roma, who lived in a large wooden planter box with excellent drainage, the beefsteak lived in a large 18-inch plastic pot with a single small hole at the base for drainage. The pot sat flush on the wooden slats of the deck, lacking clearance beneath the pot for ventilation and drainage. Its soil was damp to the touch, even though the last watering was yesterday morning. Mushrooms sprouted up from the soil around the tomato’s stalk.
“You drank too much last night, you big goof!” said the roma, whose soil was cool and dry. Multiple large drainage holes were cut into the base of its wooden container.
“I did?” replied the beefsteak, confused. “I don’t… Oh, yeah! I remember now. Duuude, last night was off the chain! I drank all night.”
“Idiot,” interrupted the roma.
“What time did I get home?” asked the beefsteak.
The roma paused. “What time did you get home?” it asked. “Seriously? Are you really that dense? You never even left the deck. You just sat there drinking water the whole time.”
“I did?” said the beefsteak. “Whoa! Huh-huh… It must have been one hell of a night!”
LOL! That was fun… 🙂 Good morning, glory! Rise and shine, my friend. It’s going to be a beautiful day. This little story actually has some truth to it because I think I am overwatering my plants. A couple of the tomatoes aren’t doing too well, and one of the potted lavender plants.
They all like different amounts of water, so it’s a work in progress. I’m still trying to figure it out. Plus, if you’re a plant, Tabs isn’t the easiest co-gardener to work with. He bites…plants.
I’m just getting started with my day, having my first cup of coffee and fiddling around. I hope your weekend gets off to a great start.
One of my coworkers (yes, I’m referring to Tabs) is having a birthday on Monday, so we’ll probably do something fun.

Aw, poor beefsteak tomato plant! I have given up on plants. I had a money tree when I first moved in with The Man, in 2010. It soon died, probably from root rot 🙁 I bought a Peace Lily a few months ago, because I read it’s good with cleansing the bathroom air.
I left for a week, and I came back to a wilted plant. 🙁 So I have given up.
Plants are wonderful, but I find that gnats always gravitate to the plants. booooo.
I will probably invest in more air purifiers. 🙁 I wish I could take care of plants as well as my parents. *sigh*
HAve a lovely weekend, Karen!

Speaking of gardening, this weekend, meaning later today, Jeff and I are heading to Home Depot to buy the materials for the big fence he’s going to build around my garden to stop the critters from eating all the veggies I’m trying to grow. The rabbits ate all the kale that came back from last year down to the stalk, except the left the Russian kale. I guess they didn’t like the taste of that one, and I don’t either! Great giveaway
Karen says
Hi Allison,
I hope the critter fence works! We have lots of varmints here too. Every time we try to plant anything tasty in our actual outside landscape area it’s toast within days. All of our tomatoes and things are on our deck because it’s the only place the burrowing buggers can’t reach!
Good luck and have a great weekend.

For years I’ve wanted a “zen” space in the far corner of my backyard. This week, I found the perfect teak bench and little end table. They’re set behind a bed of lilies and hostas, underneath an old pine tree. I nestled a little ceramic bird bath in between the tree roots, and decorated around that with some smooth river stones. It’s such a sweet little refuge now!

I highlight on a daily basis. It’s just a little something that helps me look more awake and gives some vibrance to my skin. I really dig Nars Illuminator in Orgasm. I received a sample of it the last time in Sephora and it is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, I’m a broke college student and I can’t afford to dish out $30 to buy a full size. Hopefully I’m able to win this gift card so I can make up the cost!

Love the new hair you posted about a few entries ago, Karen, it looks super good on you! 🙂
No gardening tips to pass on but I totally get it. Tried my hand at gardening for the first time ever and it went super well. Waiting for my tomatoes to ripen is killer, might’ve botched transplanting my peppers but that’s okay, and my cilantro and peas are shooting up like no one’s business. Finagling the watering process is rough especially since I have the moisture retentive type of soil in my pots right now so I’m still getting the hang of it. Good luck to you on your plants too, I hope your tomato plant fares better soon. 🙂

I spent the whole weekend with family! On Saturday, my mom, her sisters, their families, and I all hauled our butts to the county fair. I absolutely HAD to have a corndog. We all drove up to Santa Rosa today, and had lunch with some more extended family for a mini-reunion at a Chinese buffet. We sat around eating and story-telling for about 3 or 4 hours. My mom and I also hit up a nursery on the way home, and I bought myself a calico monkey flower on a whim. Pretty dang adorable!
After seeing the pictures you posted of Petaluma, I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to hit up the Seed Bank the next time we’re in that neck of the woods!
