Remember when every mall had a bookstore? Back before Amazon.com? I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember, but there used to be a bunch more bookstore chains than there are now. There were Crown Books, Waldenbooks, B. Dalton’s, of course Barnes & Nobles, which are still around, another store that started with an “S” that I can’t remember now…and Borders, but I don’t remember Borders being around when I was a little kid. I think they came along later.
Amazon changed everything. I love ’em, but they did put a lot of bookstores out of business.
Uh…I don’t know why this occurred to me right now. I was just trying to think of some of my favorite stores, and the first one that popped into my head was Sephora, but the second one was Barnes & Noble.
Hopefully I can make it to both this weekend.

Sooooo I just read your blog post on the hourglass ambient lighting powders, and I have to say, I’m OBSESSED. I need one in my life :O I’m that type of person who plans what she’ll spend her money on before she actually gets it, so you could say that I might just be a LITTLE bit of a shopaholic. It’s just, you know that feeling? The one when you watch the notebook and the ending comes and somewhere between it being broken and it pulsing with this incredible new awareness that maybe there’s hope to be found somewhere across the stars, when your heart melts just a little bit at the edges? And you feel, all of a sudden, like anything and everything you could ever want has a chance at existing beyond the moment when your eyes open to greet the sun that rises after the dream ends? Well, that’s what it feels like when I walk into a store 😀 And you see Balenciaga and Prada everywhere you look, and the names of legends emblazoned on crisp tweed blazers that feel as if they were MEANT to be placed on your shoulders with a quilted Chanel 2.55 bag to tuck away that hourglass lighting powder you blogged about. And suddenly, when you smell the fresh, clean, unmistakable scent of a freshly pressed burberry button-down, or that of the makeup counters like Laura Mercier Guerlain, it feels almost like the world’s not so bad anymore. But that’s it. In summation, I REALLY want one of those lighting powders. Thanks for another uber-generous giveaway Karen:) You always know just how to brighten up a gloomy Sunday, whether it be with Tabs the kitty or the chance to win a little bit of love at Sephora.

The only time I went to a movie by myself was in the 9th grade. I had gotten two tickets to the first Harry Potter movie but my BFF got grounded and couldn’t come so I had to go by myself. My stepbrother drove me in his car that had recently had a small fire due to a cigarette that failed to be thrown out the window and as a result, I arrived at the movie smelling like I was some kind of huge chain-smoker. No one would sit near me and there were a lot of whispers. I haven’t gone to the movies alone again, but I would consider it. I’d drive myself though!
Casey Hilgenbrink says
I went to a brick-and-mortar bookstore yesterday, and it was great! I like being able to stumble on a book you would have never otherwise found.
Diane says
I sometimes read on my Kindle or iPad, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for an actual book I can hold in my hands.
Debbie says
Happy Saturday!

Barnes and Noble barely sells books anymore. They have more puzzles and yoga mats than they do books. Amazon really did a number on them!

I do love to spend me time (by myself) often. I’m very social generally, but I feel like everyone needs time to reflect and get centered. The duration and frequency varies by person, and mine would be a little bit everyday 🙂

My town has a pretty great used bookstore which I love to explore but there’s no coffee there like at B&N 🙁
Ralitza says
I really prefer reading than going to the movies. I’ve never been to a movie alone, but my husband went to see The Matrix (when it was hip) and… he fell asleep! 🙂
Patricia says
The Matrix isn’t “hip” anymore? What???? lol I love the series, I watched it at least five times this year 😀 Of course watching a movie doesn’t compare to reading a good book, but it’s nice to see when they adapt a book, for instance, Harry Potter. I may not always be entirely happy with the adaption, BUT I am grateful to have the chance to see it on the screen 😉

My Favorite Topics of Conversation has always been Makeup, I don’t know what it is, but I can talk all day about Makeup!

Hillary says
I miss bookstores!! But now I make do with the library – better on the wallet anyways!
Patricia says
Wow, I remember when there were so many bookstores to visit. I loved everything about them, from the smell, the people, the ambiance, the wide selection of books at my fingertips. Unfortunately, only Barnes & Nobles has survived the digital tidal wave but it looks like it’s taking its last breaths 🙁 I know I can buy books online and that there are so many eBook readers I can choose from, but it just doesn’t compare to going into a bookstore and browsing for something interesting and just touching and smelling the books (lol) Yes, I love the smell of books and feeling the pages run thru my fingers. I like having my selection up close and personal, it’s nice. As for eBook readers, ugh, just not for me. A friend of mine tried to get me into using one, by letting me borrow her Kindle, but I couldn’t even get to the second page of the virtual book. It felt wrong (lol.) So every time I’m in search of a new book to add to my collection, I’ll make the 35 minute drive just to visit the only bookstore still open, Barnes & Noble.
Allison says
I love going to the movies by myself. There’s something totally luxurious about it; I feel like I’m pampering myself. Although I always go to matinees so I don’t have to deal with people texting during the movies– that’s totally a pretty peeve of mine!
I’d love to know what book you’re picking up. I’m looking for some summer reading to keep me busy at the lake.
Elizabeth says

I love me so Barnes and Noble too. Now that I have a Kindle, I sort of miss the “new book smell”, so sometimes I like to sit in B&N and just take it all in! Thanks for the giveaway, as always Karen!
Elena says

I was laid off from work, in april 2013, i’ve been job hunting ever since, and all i get is you’re overqualified. i thought about a career change, starting my own business. i haven’t gone to the mall in over six months, i would love to get out of my house and have brunch or go on a trip. living on a budget and my savings, making sacrifices, hoping that everything will get better…

Martella says
I’ve walked out of Sephora empty handed nearly 5 times last month (darned self control!), a $50 gift card is just the push I need to try the fun new products I’ve been eyeing!
camille says
I remember the many book stores to choose from. *sigh* sign of the times. Technology is taking over. Very convenient, but nothing can replace the turning of pages. I was reading a book on my Kindle, and I tried to back track to a previous chapter. It took me FOREVER to find it! With a tangible book, I would have been able to find the page by the thickness. 🙁
Hope you get to Sephora and Barnes today! Have a lovely weekend! And thank you for the expansion of entries for this awesome giveaway!!!!!!! 🙂

Audrey says
I love bookstores! I go to Indigo (Canada’s version of Barnes & Noble) every once in a while, but my favourite place to buy books is a local used bookstore. I try to buy used books rather than new ones as often as I can, because I want them to stay in business!
Amy says
I went to a party last night and my feet are still hurting me.
auroragyps says
I really miss bookstores too. I’d like to be able to look at books, not just read reviews, before I buy them, because part of me hates spending the money, since I can go to the library. Our library system is pretty good, but it doesn’t carry a lot of the fantasy & science fiction I look for, so that means buying them.

I’d rather blend in with the crowd. I’m a pretty typical introvert (who people assume is an extrovert).
Patricia says
This reminds me so much of me. I don’t understand why some people think I’m an extrovert. It might be that upon meeting someone new I feel nervous to the point of becoming chatty, but by the second time we meet I’m my old self and they’re left wondering what happened to the chatty girl (lol)

I recently went to the movies for the first time by myself. I couldn’t find anyone to go w/ me to see This is the End so I went alone!
Maggie says
I think I’m switched around with you: the bookstores are my favorites and Sephora/dept store cosmetics counters would be my second. I got into makeup in my tweens–but books I have loved since as far back as I can remember. Books are much harder for me to resist buying even if I know I’ll only read it once bc I place a higher priority on knowledge and mind-escapes. To be honest, I hardly watch any TV (even though I have dish); I mostly read to satisfy any media cravings.
I’m resisting Amazon as far as books–I really don’t want Barnes & Noble to go out of business. Nothing can replace being able to flip through books in person to see if they’re suitable–esp recipe books or technical instruction. Most independent small bookstores are not as well-stocked with these sorts of books and if I special-ordered these through them, I would have to commit.

Amazon is pretty amazing for buying a wide range of things. I am very wary of buying cosmetics on there as I have heard a lot of them are not always legit. Perfumes are also risky to buy. I do also miss being able to just run to a store and buy books or cd’s, but you gotta adapt to the change!

bookstores and sephora and lush, they’re all the stores i need. i can’t recall the one with an ‘s’, but in asia there is the ‘times’ chain that is also very good. we still have a lot of good bookstores, but yes, usually one in a big mall. not really an encouraging development, is it.

I go to a Barnes & Noble often, but more frequently to get a coffee than to buy a book. I like browsing book stores, but I’m more budget conscious than sentimental about the whole thing… I’d much rather buy more affordable books (and more of them) than have the physical experience of book store browsing and buying. I hope that doesn’t make me sound cold. It is sad to watch all the stores close, though.
Laura Case says

We still have Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. But BAM is regional I think and the closest one closed last year. So, we have to go on a special trip to go there. There a good number of B & N’s around here.
I remember Waldenbooks and B. Daltons in the malls. A few inspirational bookstores have closed brick and mortar stores and are online like Cokesbury, Heaven & Earth and Logos.
It really is an end of an era and I’m not happy about it at all.

I live alone and since my friends and I are all grad students we have wacky schedules and travel lot, so I end up going a lot of places by myself…movies, shopping, dinner, drinks, weekend trips, etc. It was weird at first, but I’ve gotten used to it. The only problem is that for some reason a lot of guys think that women sitting somewhere by themselves is a license to harass and hit on you…no thanks, I’m enjoying my own company!
Emily says
Ahh, bookstores in the mall. I used to love buying books, now I use my e-reader a lot!
Maha Karim says
Hii! Okay well I figured I’d comment about my “Make Up Pouch” have to’s that I can’t go anywhere without. I have to have the Sephora black pencil eye liner. I feel totally naked without eyeliner. I have worn it ever since I was 14. So sometimes if people see me without it they think i’m sick! I hate lip gloss so I never carry that. I feel like my hair always gets stuck to it when I walk. I do however carry my Burtsbees Pomegranate Chapstick everywhere. I have dark lips so it gives me a nice shine since its dark pink.
I totally can’t go without my MAC Studio Fix face coverage. It hides the shine and covers every little imperfection in my skin. I keep the NYX HD Photogenic concealer in my pouch as well. I only use it if I end up going somewhere unplanned where my makeup needs to look flawless. It hides my bags and also highlights my skin. Last but not least is my Power Volume Black Smoke Mascara by L’Oreal. I still haven’t found a Mascara that beats this one. I cannot live without it. If I ever run out of eyeliner last minute this mascara never fails to help me look healthy, wealthy and wise! Hope you had fun reading my post and I am looking forward to this Sephora Card!!!

I loved Borders and was really sad when it closed. The only positive part was the huge closing sale it had. I ended up buying a ton of books (and even a couple of board games) for super cheap (70%+ off). I bought a Kobo right after Borders was announced to be closing (bought it at Borders) but never use it. I just prefer the feel of an actual book in my hands.

Ingrid Patino says
One of my guilty pleasures have already been mentioned before and it’s romance novels. More specifically historical scottish romance novels. A friend, Naomi, introduced me to them back in middle school (what a formative influence) and well pun intended- I fell in love. I now read them sparingly but what lasted was how much reading comprehension I gained. I struggled a lot in school with reading since my parents were Colombian immigrants and I spoke Spanish since I could say “mama” and “papa”. It was also the portal to read my favorite classics from The Count of Monte Cristo to The Old Man and The Sea. I still enjoy the genre today as one of my favorite series is Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. I have no shame waking into the romance section of any bookstore- especially Barnes and Nobles. I have no shame because it opened the billions of possibilities that reading gave to me in my life.
