1. Meet me at Rue La Rue Café
As you may or may not know, I am moderately — OK, intensely — obsessed with The Golden Girls.
There are lots of reasons. Like, I dig their naughty humor (even though it went over my head when I was younger), the camaraderie among the women, the fabulous ’80s fashion, and Sophia Petrillo had THE BEST lines.
Well, get your shoulder pads and your shimmery genie pants ready, because a Golden Girls-themed cafe is now open in New York City!
It’s called Rue La Rue (of course it is).
Do you think they serve cheesecake?? (They do.) I want to fly cross country just to have brunch.
Also in breaking Golden Girls news, all seven seasons start streaming on Hulu February 13th.
You’re welcome. 🙂
2. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Radiant Light
Bronzer!
I love bronzer. Always. 24/7/365. But with all the rain we’ve been having (seriously, it just won’t stop!), my skin hasn’t seen the light of day in…I can’t even remember how long. I look borderline jaundiced. The yellow tones are turned up, and I have zero natural bronzy glow.
I rediscovered Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Radiant Bronze Light last week (I just sort of forgot about it for a while), and it’s giving me life. I’ve been all about that sun-kissed deliciousness.
Funny thing is…when it first came out, I just felt so-so about it. I think it was because I wasn’t using it with the right brush, but the trick, I’ve found, is it to use the biggest, fluffiest face brush you’ve got, one that covers a big area, and lightly pat the product (don’t sweep).
The undertones are warm and delicate, so if you use a face brush with a compact, dense brush head, you run the risk of ending up with orange, shiny stripes. If you apply it with a big, fluffy powder brush, on the other paw, and do a series of light pats on your cheek bones, across the bridge of your nose and around the edges of your face, it warms everything up and bathes your skin in the light of a buttery sunset.
Straight magical.
3. Work, work, work, work, work, work…
I love this choreography set to Rihanna’s Work by JoJo Gomez.
Um…can someone please teach me how to move like this?
I love all the booty shakin’! It’s kinda naughty. 🙂
4. Think of the big picture
I read somewhere recently about big-picture thinking, and how it’s important to make time for it every week.
I love the idea! I just added a reminder to my calendar to spend an hour on big-picture thinking every Wednesday afternoon.
For an hour every Wednesday over the next four weeks, I’m going to give my mind permission to wander, brainstorm, and dream big dreams about my personal and professional lives.
Dream big dreams! That’s the key here.
5. Shampooing!
Been doing it more than usual lately and using less dry shampoo. I’ve mostly conditioner-washed my hair for years and just shampooed once a week (if that), and then I used dry shampoo on the in-between days to save time.
It is more work to shampoo, condition and style my hair, but stuff changed over the past year. My scalp went rogue on me! I don’t know if it’s from the pregnancy (my body went cray, for real!), but my hair and scalp are happier when I shampoo two or three times a week.
I don’t think I’ll ever go back to washing my hair every day like I did in my teens and 20s, but I’ve been lovin’ a good every-other-day shampoo.
What are some things you’ve been loving lately? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!
Chris25 says
Omg, I need to visit that cafe! I live in NYC, thank goodness.
I’ve been loving nachos, “Luther” ( love Idris Elba), my new smoky brown beaded bracelet, Pepperidge Farms Classic collection cookies, and MAC Rubenesque paint pot.
Karen says
Luther is a good show. LOVE Rubenesque, too!
LindaLibraLoca says
Yes, Golden Girls! Sophia is amazing.
Karen says
She sure is! She has the best lines in the show.
Fran says
Love the dance video! It’s like a combination of belly-dance with gymnastics. And I love the first dancer’s hair.
Some things I’ve been loving lately:
The MAC Rocker Chick lipsticks. I love playing with the unconventional colors, and the matte formula is so much more comfortable than it used to be (and not uber-matte, either, which I love, too).
Olaplex No. 3, IGK Laid-Back Defrizz and Anti-Static spray, and a (very generous) sample of davines oi all-in-one milk I found lurking in my stash, for my hair.
My ends get so dry, what with my hair being so long, no I hate to shampoo too often. When my roots start to look different than the lengths, I do the opposite of what everyone else does. I’ll put some IGK Down and Out Dirty Spray, or Pureology Liquid Wax, on the lengths and ends, to make them look like the roots, and put my hair in a fancy braid. I can get an extra day between shampoos that way, with my hair still looking good. I’ve never found a dry shampoo that I thought worked all that well in my roots.
New cheek colors: Burberry Silk ‘n Bloom blush, Dior Diorskin Nude Air Luminizer on #4 worn as a blush. Tarte Stunner highlighter.
Shiny, sparkly toppers for my eyeshadows: MUFE Star Lit Powders, and the Kat Von D Alchemist Holographic Transformers palette. Especially beautiful over shades from the Laura Mercier Editorial Eye Palette Intense Clays.
Scarves. I’m wearing them every day! Silk scarves, cashmere scarves, wool scarves, cotton bandanas. I’m going to try linen, too. It has to be a material that breathes, or my neck feels horrible. Rayon, hemp, bamboo, viscose can be OK, but polyester, even if it’s microfiber, really does not work for me if it’s going to be right next to my neck. Scarves will always fit, and they never look dated (some prints might, but you can always just fold them). And, unlike necklaces, they keep you warm! And, you can take them off easily if you get too hot. (Ask me in the heat of summer, though, and I’ll be all about the necklaces! I need cotton bandanas in more different colors 🙂 )
Karen says
Well, now I’m just going to have grab some Olaplex No. 3. 🙂
How are you liking the Laura Mercier Editorial Eye Palette?
Fran says
I really like that palette a lot, but it’s pretty dark for me. You can apply the shadows with your fingers, but my eyes are small and tucked far under my browbone, so that makes a mess. I use a firm, flat synthetic brush instead to apply instead, and blend with a tiny buffing type brush. One of Laura Mercier’s Eye Basics makes a good primer for it. I usually use it for a smoky eye type of look, then top it with some kind of colorful highlighter, like from Anastasia’s Moon Child palette or the Kat Von D Holographic palette. That creates really gorgeous looks.
Speaking of Olaplex, what are you going to do when you need to go to the hairdresser now? I would be seriously upset if mine moved away, it took me a long time to find her! Although someone else in the same salon did do a good job for me once. I just feel like she’s really on my same wave-length as me as far as my hair goals go. She never, ever suggests that I cut it off or color it, and she takes the time to cut it so that I can move the part around at will.

GG on Hulu- that is just the best news I’ve heard in ages. We got rid of DirecTV a couple of years ago and just use our Roku and antenna. It’s great (& so much cheaper!!), but I’ve missed GG reruns.
What have I been loving lately? Binge-watching Broadchurch (David Tennant being all broody). Refinishing furniture. And (s-l-o-w-l-y) getting our new house in order.
Karen says
February 13, girl! I’m gonna bake a cheesecake and eat it while I’m binge watching GG that day. 😀
So tell me about refinishing furniture! Is this a new hobby?
Erin says
I don’t like using most dry shampoos, I think the secret is in the styling. I shampoo every two or three days depending on my activity level. First day is down and bouncy, second day is down with a deep side part, and third day is usually up.
As for my list:
1. Vanille Insensée by Atelier Cologne, I just bought a full bottle an it’s on it’s way!
2. Sunday Riley UFO, breakouts are real right now.
3. My John Masters Shampoo with Zinc and Sage and Christophe Robin’s Mask. Hair nirvana. Almost everyday is a good hair day now.
4. Trader Joes Sea Salt Brownie Bites… I took them to a party and they went so fast.
5. Trader Joes Spicy Thai Fried Rice. OHHHH so good and fast!
Astrid says
Uh oh, you’re making me want to try out that Hourglass bronzer!! (Sadly they didn’t exist in Germany :/ )
5 things I’ve been loving lately…
Yoga (yeah, I know. Sounding like an old record. But doing it daily makes my body feel so much different!)
Walking 10.000 steps a day while listening to podcasts (currently loving Mentoring Moments series from Forbes where women share their success and lessons).
Chanel Code Subtils eyeshadow palettes (thanks to you 😉 )
And… taking some time off to see some movies at the Berlinale movie festival!

I never leave replies, but just wanted to chime in about something that’s been working for my hair lately 🙂 I have fine hair and tend to get an oily scalp, so I can’t stand *not* shampooing everyday. However, so many conditioners weigh my hair down (I must condition or else, weird static hair). If not that, it’s too light and doesn’t condition my ends well.
Anyways, I’ve started using any very-moisturizing conditioner first thing – leave it on for the duration of the shower. Then at the very end, I shampoo on top of that (without first rinsing the conditioner), concentrating on the scalp. Result for me is a not-too-weighed-down top, and more conditioned ends. I do follow up with some kind of light oil on the ends, for added measure 🙂

Things I’ve been loving:
-Forensics Files – I’ve loved this show for over a decade, but Netflix has a BUNCH of new episodes up.
– My new Nars Soft Matte Concealer in Chantilly – really perfect concealer for blemishes and spots. It’s a little too dry and not quite the right color for my undereyes (which need something peachier), but it’s so good for blemishes and spots.
-C21.5 Vitamin C Serum by Wishtrend – My skin looks so good with this! And the accompanying sheet masks are bomb too.
Not loving still having my ankle splint. Cramping my lifestyle!

1. I love the Hourglass bronzer! I have it in the lighter shade and it’s great for me (I’m paper white and a lot of bronzers look odd on me). It just adds a little warmth and glow.
2. I’m also loving the Hourglass blush. I have one in Incandescent Electra and I can’t wait to buy Ethereal Glow (I’m on a no-buy now though). Again, just adds a little color and gorgeous glow.
3. Tree Hut Shea Sugar scrub. I go through body scrub like water and this stuff is grainy enough, while being a little oily (which I like), and relatively inexpensive. Plus most of the scents are nice!
4. Romantic makeup looks. Satin skin, peachy pink blushes, pink lips, fluttery lashes and fluffy eyebrows. I don’t know why but all of a sudden I’m loving those kinds of looks.
5. Elizabeth and James Bourbon perfume. I’ve found my signature fragrance! I wear it every single day. It’s warm and a bit sweet with a nice bit of powder that makes it so wearable. I usually don’t like fragrances with powder but mixed with the warmer notes it works.

Gurrrlll! Don’t even get me started on the Golden Girls. I had no idea you were obsessed with them! I’m obsessed with them. I was so excited to hear that all the episodes will be streaming on Hulu. The menfolk in my family will be freaking out, they don’t share my intense love for the fabulous foursome, but they will deal or go off to their respective man caves until I’m done watching!
I used to watch Golden Girls with my grandma. We had the best time!
I’m currently loving Caudalie The Eye Cream, makes my under eyes feel like I’m a lot younger.
I have a sample of a new perfume I may have to buy: Atelier Cologne in Clementine California. It’s bright and citrusy and I want to bathe in it.
Also, Pillsbury’s Thin Mints Brownie Mix. It’s doing a good job holding me over until my Girl Scout cookie shipment arrives and I go up a pants size.
