Were they makeup? Skin care? Hair products? Something else?
Mine were skin care, and side note — please don’t ask me why I keep these empty jars around, because allegedly I AM NOT A HOARDER (keep telling yourself that, Karen).
- Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil: I’m on my third bottle of this! At night I layer it on top of Sunday Riley Good Genes.
- Clinique Superdefense SPF 20 for Very Dry to Dry Combination Skin: This hella moisturizes my dry winter skin, and I love how well it layers underneath makeup. Next time I go to Sephora, I’m definitely grabbing another jar.
- Lancome Visionnaire Advanced Multi-Correcting Cream: It’s pretty moisturizing, but I didn’t really notice a difference in my skin after using this day cream for wrinkles, pores and texture. It’s not bad… I’m just not really in love with it.
What were the last products you finished, and do you ever save your empties for nostalgia’s sake? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hi Karen! Two skincare empties and one mascara for me! The Bobbi Brown Eye Opening mascara, the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base and my cleanser, the La Roche Posay Effaclar. Hope you are having a great day!
Chelsea says
I think my most recent empties were the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Creamy Cleanser, Cheryl Lee MD True Lipids hydrocortisone cream, and my Avene thermal water mist.
I’m really close to the end of my CeraVe Skin Renewing Cream Serum with retinol, my DermaZinc cream, and my BurnOut Eco Sensitive Sunscreen. I also just picked up some more sheet masks (Hada Labo Tokyo and C20).
If it’s not obvious, I’m super into skincare.
nai says
Chelsea, how did you like the CeraVe Cream Serum? I picked it up but haven’t started on it yet.
Chelsea says
I like it a lot! I’ve purchased probably 4 tubes of it since it was released. It definitely helps with skin texture for me and breakouts without irritating. I don’t use it every day because my skin is quite dry, and I always follow it with a heavier soothing moisturizer. If you’re not dry, it’s pretty nice on its own.
Chelsea says
Oh I just finished a bottle of Bioderma Sensibio too.
Karen says
Hey there! My last three empties- Acure Rosehip Oil; Maybelline Smooth & Dewy foundation; and Essence Lash Princess Volume mascara. I would repurchase all three! But won’t right now- I’m on a use it up mission!
Rachel says
1) Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream for face. Not sure why it’s a bestseller, I personally didn’t find it very moisturizing.
2) Travel size Clarins Super Restorative Day Cream. I love this but the full size is so expensive!
3) Nuance Salma Hayek Face Oil. Pretty good and nicely priced. I have another bottle to use because they were buy one get one!
Yes I save my empty containers sometimes thinking I can put something else in there…exactly what I’m really not sure.
Jane says
Hi Karen, my three are:
La Roche Posay Rosaliac Micellar Makeup Removal Gel, this is the third one I’ve finished and I’ve just started my fourth. So refreshing and gentle.
Chanel loose face powder, a longstanding favourite that I buy again and again.
Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base; I must have used up 10 or more tubes of that over the years!
I don’t keep the empties as I know they won’t ever be used for anything else, straight into the bin they go. My parents had the hoarding gene and I’m trying really hard not to go there!!
Dani says
Paulas Choice brightening essense, PC 10% niacinamide, and L’Oréal voluminous false fibers mascara.
Kiss & Make-up says
Paula’s Choice Super Antioxidant Serum, Paula’s Choice Multi Treatment and Nivea Double Effect Make-up Remover.
Jessica says
Skincare….my Rodan+Fields day cream & night cream. My eye cream is almost empty.
I normally do not save empties but I do have an odd need to save my R+F empties…I keep them in my painting studio. A few have actually been used for various painting purposes.
Eileen says
Most recent empties: La Mer The Treatment which I’ll be replacing this weekend, Jack Black Sun Guard SPF 45 which I’ve already replaced, and Guerlain Maxi Lash mascara which I’ve also already replaced. It’s’s not empty but it has hit the three month mark so out it goes).
Fran says
I go through skin care products faster than anything else, but the last thing I finished was Living Proof no-frizz Humidity Spray. Before that: Paula’s Choice Resist Ultra-Light Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum and Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy lip balm (the one in the white tube). I have about half a dozen different clear lip balms that I use and love. I’ve got super-dry lips, so I layer and rotate them!
Makeup-wise, I most recently used up a tube of Hourglass Veil Mineral primer, I just hit pan on another compact of Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light (although these last for quite a while after you hit pan), and am about to use up a second mini of Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Cream. It’s rare for me to use up color cosmetics, because I use so many different ones, but I have used up and repurchased one lipstick, YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in #19, Fuchsia in Rage, one of my best lip colors ever.
I only save an empty if I have to remind myself of the exact name for purposes of repurchasing… I’ve got enough clutter around here, what with my various hobbies and limited space!
Tatiana says
Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Eye Cream and Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus Eye Cream. The fine lines around my eyes have gotten better since I started using the Ferulic + Retinol cream but it’s drying, thus the Repairwear to keep the moisture in.
Radical Multi Brightening Serum. Can’t say this did anything. I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it. Glad I got it during a clearance sale.
I never keep empty jars or bottles around. Once they’re empty they go into the recycling bin. I have enough problems hoarding other stuff, I don’t need to add to it.

I still have my very first tube of carmex — empty, of course — because purchasing it at a rest stop while camping was a life-changing moment for me!! Now I use carmex allll the time. Plus the old tube has a vintage feel since they’ve changed the design several times since then. ha!
Lelde says
My empties:
1. Nuxe mousse micellaire – a facial wash/foam that does not dry out the face. Even though I’m with normal/combo skin, sometimes these facials tend to dry out the face severely. Bought already 3 tubes in place :). Don’t want to experience when it’s out and unavailable.
2.- Stila convertible color in Lilium. Yes, that’s one of those rare make up items which have even run out for me. Love it! Use it literally everyday with or without the rest of makeup.
3.- Chanel Le Volume mascara. My favourite mascara!!! Have already repurchased.
Amy says
Anastasia brow gel (replaced it with Shu); Neutrogena natural cleanser (may be one more dollop in there); and lavender night cream by Avalon organics.
I’m also on a “use it up” mission. There are constantly new, interesting products to buy, but especially with moisturizers and sunscreens, my goal right now is to hit “empty” on what I already have. That’s a delicious feeling of its own. 🙂
Lorraine says
For me, skincare is what is always used up first. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, Clinique Extra mild liquid facial soap, Clinique Super rescue Antioxidant Moisturizer, Clinique Even better Hand cream. I do save and reuse the liquid soap pump after disinfecting with alcohol, because I find the pump useful and convenient for other products as well.
Katie says
I literally just finished my fifth (FIFTH!) jar of the Belif Aqua Bomb (the gel formula – I find it moisturizing enough for normal-dry skin, even though it’s marketed to oily/combo). I’m almost done with my MUFE Ultra HD liquid foundation, so I’ll have to pick that up. And I finished a tube of Bumble and bumble restoring conditioner (overpriced -not very moisturizing and I noticed no difference in breakage).
Laurie says
BareMinerals Cleansing Oil (which is a now-defunct product), BareMinerals loose eyeshadow in Dove (a now-defunct shade of light gray that I adored), and StriVectin Advanced Tightening Neck Cream. I found a super-sized jar on Overstock that should get me through about six months. Yay! I’m bummed about the Dove because I’m starting to go back to loose mineral eye shadow, and it was the perfect gray-not-silver, matte that for me made a great transition color.

Let’s see, my last three empties were as follows:
1) PM Perfector Overnight Hydrating Cream with Blackcurrant+Licorice by Formula 10.0.6. I’m on my third pot of it. It’s lightweight, smells amazing, and doesn’t leave my face greasy before bed.
2) Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara. This was the second time I’ve purchased the mascara. I love how it only takes one coat to make my lashes full and soft.
3) A daily exfoliator formulated with tropical fruit enzymes and without all the bad stuff by Everyone Face. I discovered it at my locally owned grocery store and just finished my third bottle. I was looking for a daily product to clean the grooves between my nose and my face (if that makes sense) because I was constantly breaking out in whiteheads. Ick. I love this stuff. It’s naturally a bit gritty; there’s no added sand/sugar/beads.
To date, I don’t hoard empties though I have a powder compact I’m going to hang onto when I finally finish it up as it’s one of the few MAC products I own. It’s from the Liberty collection which was like six years ago? I dunno. The powder is sort of a peachy luminous glow and I use it more for a really subtle illuminator rather than all-over.

I just finished my mini Estee Lauder Advanced night repair eye cream, apart from that I think nothing else.. And just this morning I thought to throw it away and then I stopped and put it back inside lol
Karen, wanted to ask you do you think Good genes and Luna oil would be ok for acne prone oily skin? I am thinking of trying them, but still have thoughts about it..
LindaLibraLoca says
I only keep empties for the corresponding vidLinda, Libra, Loca: Beauty, Baby and Backpackingos, not for nostalgic reasons. And my last three thgs were a foundation (used the last drop today) and two skincare items.
Also, even though I liked Luna, I found several other, more affordable options that are failrly similar ingredient wise, if you should want to look into something else. I will link the blogpost below.
Chloe says
I’m the exact same, I can’t ever bring myself to throw away an empty product…well not straight away at least! Skincare can be so expensive so I feel so sad having to throw away a bottle…even though it’s empty haha. My most recent empty is the Sarah Chapman Skinesis Overnight Facial (still havn’t thrown the bottle away though).

I kept the box from the Dinoplatz Escalator Mascara because I loved the shape and graphics. I also sometimes keep empties as reminders that I liked something. Especially with samples, if I’m trying to decide which of the many I would like the full sized version of. Lately, my empties have been the aforementioned mascara, the PoreFessional and a Tata Harper red clay facial wash.
Erin says
Luna, Good Genes, and Fresh Seaberry Oil. I’m about to run out of my Fresh Black Tea Instant Delay Infusion as we as Tidal. I have backups already.
T. says
I’m pretty sure the last two things I finished were a lip balm and a mascara. For the third I’m not sure haha…
MmeFormalDeHyde says
Hi Karen! Did you use the Luna oil when you were pregnant? It’s wonderful stuff and I LOVE it but people keep telling me I will have to stop using it before i get pregnant but there have actually been no studies that show topical retinol or retinoid use is dangerous to the developing fetus. Anyway, i was just curious if you continued using it when you were pregnant because obviously you had a healthy baby. By the way, she is super adorable and her name is the best (HUGE Terminator fan here)!
Karen says
Hi MmeFormalDeHyde,
Thank you! And I’m glad you get the Sarah Connor ref. 🙂 When I was pregs I didn’t use Luna. I kept it simple, just a simple moisturizer without any bells or whistles. I figured I could go back to using the heavy duty stuff after she was born.
