Confession #1: I had my first makeup nightmare last night.
I stayed up really late last night to write the Chanel Aurora Blues Spring 2008 review. I went to bed at 2 a.m., only to have a Chanel makeup nightmare in the hours that followed.
In the dream, I was running around and caught within a swarm of people and getting really upset because no one would listen to me. I kept yelling, “The dark blue in the outer V! We’ve got to use the dark blue in the outer V!” But it was like I was invisible.
I considered the symbolism. Was the dream a window into my current psyche? That, or I guess it could’ve been indigestion (I ate a bag of caramel corn around midnight). Hmmm….
Confession #2: I’m wearing stretchy pants right now.
I had to bust out the stretchy pants before I sat down tonight to write this post ’cause I’m stuffed to maximum capacity.
I spent the day driving and eating all over the Bay Area. I went to San Jose for brunch with friends, and then to Berkeley for my mom’s birthday dinner. Now, I’m home and tired. Why is the repetitive lifting of my fork to shovel food into my gullet so exhausting? I don’t know.
Confession #3: I’m in fight mode.
I recently watched a show on TV where a professional BMX biker talked about what makes a person a champion. He said that when most people feel like they’ve hit their maximum limit — whether it be in sports, academics, or whatever — they give up. Champions are the few who hit that limit but have the will to push past the challenges and pain to achieve more than they thought they could.
It’s kinda been a challenging few weeks (I’ve had writer’s block the size of ALASKA), so one thing that’s been helping me is listening to music that helps me push past the pain.
No, I’m not listening to Eye of the Tiger.
Several Kanye West songs are on heavy rotation, like Touch the Sky, Stronger and Champion.
This is the story of a champion
runners on their mark and they pop their guns
Stand up stand up here he comes
Tell me what it takes to be number one
Tell me what it takes to be number one
An awesome video of a live version from the VMA’s of Kanye West’s Champion
After I listen to that song I feel like telling the world to FEAR MY WRATH!
Do you have a favorite fight mode song?
Hope your Saturday was chill (and that your pants fit, oy!).
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Rowena says
Very Cheesy, but I like Eminem, Lose Yourself.
Or Edwyn Collins, ‘Never Met a Girl Like you before’.
Don’t tell anyone, please.

Your nightmare is actually quite cute. LOL. It happened to me too! Well similar.. my dream was that I told this makeup artist that was doing my makeup, I wanted a natural look but she made me look like some kind of a slut. I kept screaming “NO! I don’t want that! I want natural look!” but I was ignored. I was pretty much invisible to her -_-
I used Clinique Superbalanced Foundation & set it with benefit get even powder with the kabuki brush. It is really good 🙂 The Clinique lady gave me huge load of samples of it. She gave me samples of the foundation & concealer, the WHOLE tube!! However I have 4 things that I’m thinking to get… Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser, Laura Mercier Oil free Foundation, MAC Mineralized Satinfinish & MAC blot powder. Would you know if I could use them MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural as a foundation? I saw it done before on some tutorial on Youtube but I’m unsure about it =(
Sorry for the long comment.

My fight mode song is Ring the Alarm by Beyonce – whenever I hear it I go into protect ya neck mode and I am ready to rumble I turn into 101 pounds of pure fighter LMAO!!
DivineBlackness (Brittany) says
I love this post!
My fight song is R.Kelly’s “The World Greatest”. So inspiring. But lately, I’ve been all over Mary J Blige’s “Just Fine”—which is what you will be. Enjoy indulging. Life is short. Not to justify eating like crazy but to do so in moderation, I think, is perfectly fine. Muuuuuah! Haaaapy New Yeeear!
Shannon says
Too funny Karen!
Glosslizard says
Ok, here I go dating myself, but my fight song comes from my old punk rock days (when I met my husband he had a mohawk, hee hee!)… I listen to “The Card Cheat”, by The Clash, at really high volume to psyche myself up for anything!
And don’t worry, you’ve been disguising your writer’s block magnificently! I never would have guessed!
Some days are just stretchy pants days — you’ll be back in your slim-fits in no time! 🙂
Karen says
Rowena, I like “Lose Yourself”, too. That’s a good one!
Karen says
Hey Sandy,
I think MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural is for either light coverage or as a setting powder for your foundation. So if you only need light coverage then go for it!
I personally am not the biggest fan of MAC foundations. I wish I could use them, but they break me out 🙁
Karen says
Babyu21 you are too cute; I like that song, too. Good choice!
Karen says
Hey Brittany,
Happy New Year! I haven’t heard either of those songs. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the new Mary J. but still haven’t had the chance yet! Will def. look ’em up!
Karen says
Thanks Shannon! Happy new year 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard, The Clash!!!! They have some *great* songs for long distance running. I’ve got several on my iPod.
That’s super hot that your hubby rocked the mohawk back in the day. Were you sporting the punk rock girl look too?
Glosslizard says
I didn’t do the punk-girl look too much, I got most of my bad-girl kicks just by dating a punker! I sometimes rocked the dark silver-gray eyeshadow and fuschia lips, and I had the fierce earring collection, but mostly I just stole his leather jacket! 🙂 It has imprinted on me a lifelong love of the late 70’s/early 80’s punker bands though!
Ha! I just took a page out of your book and rewarded myself for finishing a project by hustling down to my local MAC store and picking up the piggie in Golden Olive! It’s so pretty in person, I love it! Maybe I’ll do a FOTD of my own and send you a pic!
Janelle says
You’re beyond hilarious!! I need to avoid reading your blog while trying to eat or drink anything hot…laughter + hot foods = OW!!
kia says
LOL… ok so i was hoping that 1 800 confess would be real…. i have some sad makeup confessions…
oh well!
a fight song? beyonce’s ring the alarm will be an all time fav. while whitesnake’s Here I Go Again On My Own isn’t quite a fight song… it helps me to let go of tear and put on my big girl panties and do what i gotta do!
Megan says
LOL… so your dream is totally cracking me up. Anyway…regardless of writer’s block I’m amazed that you have been able to keep up with the blog. It seems like my holiday social obligations have taken over my life. 🙁 Anyway it should be over soon…I hope. 🙂
Okay… now on to fight songs…and I have a few…and they’re kinda all over the place…so bear with me. Some are actually inspirational whereas others are just something that will psych you up and make you move. I dunno I love music. 🙂
Lenny Kravitz “Are you gonna go my way” This is my number one…as it’s been my fight song since I was 12. 🙂
Mambo Sauce “Miracles” This is a local DC artist but you can find it on You Tube etc. You should check it out. It’s a go-go beat…so I don’t know if people outside of DC can get down with it or not.
MIA “Boyz” The beat just psyches me up
Eminem, nate dogg “Till I collapse”
Devo “Whip it”
Young MC “Bust a move”
Run DMC “It’s Tricky”
Des’ree “You gotta be”
DMX “Party Up”
LL Cool J “Mama said knock you out”
Destiny’s Child “Survivor”
Christina Aguilera “Fighter”
Jay Z and Linkin Park “Numb/Encore”
The Game, 50 Cent “Hate it or love it”
Nelly “#1”
Daft Punk “One more time”
Destiny’s Child “lose my breath”
Outkast “BOB” aka “Bombs Over Baghdad”
Black Eyed Peas “Pump It”
LL Cool J “Head Sprung”
Wow…that was a long list…sounds like I normally need some inspiration huh?
Karen says
Ohhh, pretty! I love Golden Olive, Glosslizard (I put it on just for fun today and wore it while making dinner, ha!). Please do send me a FOTD, I’d love to see you work it.
In the early 80s I so badly wanted to be punk rock. It’s really hard when you’re 5 and your parents are immigrants, LOLZ. I hope you kept those fierce earrings, girl!
Karen says
Heya Janelle,
LOL, oh watch that hot coffee/tea! I’ve cracked up reading blogs too – pink is the new blog and fourfour have gotten me to snort my tea on many an occasion.
Have a happy new year! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kia,
LOL, I should probably set up a makeup confessional line! (I know I’d call it and talk all about all my mishaps with “the smokey eye”, LOL).
Beyonce seems to be the diva of choice when it comes to fight songs!
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I was wondering where ya been! I hope you are feeling better – last time we talked you were sick. Anyway, I hope your holidays were fun and went smoothly.
Lose my Breath, Survivor, Fighter: I love music too, and I have half of your fight songs on my iPod right now on my “sprints” list. I listen to them when I need an extra boost during my runs.
Here are few more of mine:
Rock Star (Jason Nevins remix) – N*E*R*D
Get Together – Madonna
Revolution – The Beatles (I looooove the first few bars of the guitar riff of this song!)
Glosslizard says
Oh, Karen!
I have the cutest mental image of you as a five-year-old with spiked hair, a little black punker dress, torn tights and black patent mary-janes! You’d make such a great punker-chick (this of course goes hand-in-hand with the ‘tude that will make you such a fierce martial artist)!
kia says
@ Megan…
whoa whoa whoa now.. what you know about that Mambo Sauce? LOL
Megan says
Kia…You from DC? Where are you from? You know I’m faking…living in Rockville… but I still hit the go-go’s from time to time. Although sometimes I feel like I’m getting too old for it…the crowd is sooooo young. 🙂
Karen says
You guys don’t know what old is till you are 32 and go to a club … holy crap.
I gotta check out this Mambo Sauce, though!
Karen says
Ha ha, Glosslizard! I tried so hard to be punk rock when I was in kindergarden. I actually tore my tights and got into BIG TROUBLE. Then I got the idea to put safety pins on my Hello Kitty shirts – that didn’t go well, either.
I actually didn’t start liking punk rock music till 2004, can you believe it? I didn’t really feel it for the longest time, and then one day it just sort of spoke to me. (Corney, yet so true). I love it when new worlds of music open up! Do you have any fave bands?
Megan says
Karen…I’m 27…although I would never say I’m old at all…27 is not that far from 32…and the last time I went to see the What Band (a go-go band) which was like a month ago….some little 21 year old tried to come holla at me….I was like…you know what…does your mama know you’re in here? That young crowd can make anyone feel old.
Karen says
LOL, that’s happened to me before too. I used to hate looking young (I can’t tell you how many times I got carded and turned down when I was legit legal) but now I loooooooooooove it. The last time I went to a club was during Halloween, so I think it was just especially bad because people were ready to party. There were drunk chicks heaving on the floor, nasty dudes, and LOTS of desperation. I’ve been going to clubs for a long time (I love to dance) and that was the first time I ever felt old.
Are you going out for New Year’s Eve tonight?
Allie says
My fight song? Anything from DMX. It’s that voice–he could do a cover of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and I swear it would inspire me to push through.
Karen says
Hi Allie!
Yeah, I hear that! I need more DMX in my mp3 library to get me through tough days and tough runs 🙂
Happy New Year!
