Whew, nelly! It was hotter than an armpit here in NorCal today. 🙂 I wanted to wear my wavy hair down this morning, but it was just too darn hot and sticky to go there. I opted instead for my usual hot weather hairstyle, a low, messy bun at the nape of my neck.
Pigtails, ponytails, French braids, twists — what’s your favorite way to wear your hair when it’s too hot out to function? Do you like it up or leave it down?

Pony tail! Or a messy bun.

Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Those are two tried-and-true faves. Do you ever do a French twist? That’s a cute one that I think needs to come back in style!
Kajal Couture says
A messy bun type upto with a claw clip holding it all together. If the heat is tolerable, I will wear it down, like I do usually, since my hair looks better down.
Karen says
Hi Kajal Couture,
I prefer to wear my hair down, too. How hot does it get where you live?
Avery says
I’ve been twisting my bangs and using a pin to keep them back (sort of like a side braid, but a twist is much easier). I’ll put the rest in a pony tail– it looks a little more updated and keeps my bangs off my face in this heat.
Karen says
Hi Avery,
I do that, too. 🙂 It’s an easy and chic look. Do you put any product in your bangs before you twist ’em?
Vampy Varnish says
I have been wishing I had long hair lately so I had a choice, but alas, the bob takes a long time to grow out and I can really only wear it in one style for now!

Karen says
Hi Vampy Varnish,
So true — bobs take forevah to grow out. I remember growing mine out and always caving into another trim whenever I’d start to feel hair touching the back of my neck. Drove me nuts!
Anyway, how do you feel about hair accessories? You can always switch it up with headbands, scarves, clips, etc.
Marisol says
Since I have naturally curly hair, I straighten it on hot summer days. It just gets too messy and out of control. I feel like a crazy lion lol
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
LOL! Oh gawd, I am all too familiar with the lion’s mane hairdo. Does yours go nuts when it’s humid? It was muggy up here this weekend and mine went into CRAZY mode.
Toni says
Pony, teased @ the crown! Nice and functional 🙂
Karen says
Hi Toni,
Cute! I love that style. It’s so retro. 🙂
ines & cha cha says
french braid, dutch braid (a “reverse” french braid), a bun or twist!
occasionally if it’s not too humid, i’ll wear it down, loose and wavy with a scarf in it!

Hi Karen,
My hair is really frizzy, so I usually blowdry it straight, and use the Redken straightening product and the Chi Silk Infusion. If I use a straightener, I’ll put in teh Chi flatiron guard product (I forget the actual name) But not much goes in my bangs, because otherwise I feel like they look pretty greasy, especially when they are twisted.

Uh… I cut my hair short 🙂 Drastic but works LOL…

I keep it long and flowing. I’m a diva and that’s the only way to have. Comfort be damned. If I get hot, I just flip it to one side.
Patti says
A high ponytail works for me now that my hair is long enough for it.
Karen says
Hi Patti,
Cute! Have you been growing yours out for a while?
Marisol says
When it’s humid, it gets even wilder. I see my pics of when I wet to New Orleans a few years ago & it’s like Monica hair. You know that episode of Friends. Although I never have sported the braids.
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
Okay, I might be the only person on earth who didn’t watch Friends. I’ve seen three episodes total. Lame, right? I missed a LOT of 90s television. Just recently I discovered Seinfeld… holy wow, that shizz is funny!
Did you visit New Orleans for vacay? I’ve always wanted to go.
Glosslizard says
I almost always leave it down, but when it’s really too hot to handle I grab a hair clip and do a quick clip either at the base of my neck or at the top of the back of my head. I try to keep some cool clips around for the purpose, I have a cat-shaped clip and an Animaniacs clip among others!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
CUTE! I am envious of your Animaniacs clip, aww.
You know what you need in your clip collection? A colorful, cute Tokidoki clip. 🙂
Nikki says
Either pig tail or high bun 🙂

Karen says
Hi Nikki,
Lucky you! I wish I could pull off a high bun! Whenever I wear one I feel like I look too severe. If only I could get ’em to look elegant, le sigh.
Ann says
easiest is a ponytail but I want to try to incorporate braids more this summer.
Karen says
Hi Ann,
Me too! I like lil’ braids in the front that are held back with a clip and French braids. 🙂
Glosslizard says
Ooh, I would LOVE that! If you ever see one….
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Ha! I almost typed, “Hi Glossimer.” 🙂
I will keep my eye out for that clip. I would like a tokidoki headband, myself. 🙂
Marisol says
I can’t believe you have only seen three episodes of Friends. You need to stop watching Golden Girls and move on to the 90’s. hee hee hee
Here is a picture of Monica hair which I am referring to. I think that you will appreciate it. http://lauraandnate.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/monicas-hair.jpg
I visited NO the summer before Katrina happened. Went there on vacation with 6 other friends and we had a ball aside from having frizzy hair and feeling like my clothes were wet the whole time. The humidity there is awful if you aren’t used to it. But it was a lot of fun though. Partied it up on Bourbon Street, went on a swamp tour and walked around the French Quarter.

Hi Marisol,
Aww, you know you love the fab four! Dorothy Z. will always be in the mutha effin’ house!
And hello, I know that hairstyle all too well. I once had an unfortunate incident with a triangle-shaped haircut and my hair looked EXACTLY like that picture. I really gotta rent a few seasons of Friends on DVD someday.
Your trip to NO sounds like a blast. Traveling with friends is the best, huh? You learn so much about your companions and create so many great memories. As for the humidity…. eww, sticky.
BTW, you’ll have to give me the skinny on the best places to eat in Novato. 🙂
Kate & Zena says
During the summer? Let’s see, I’ve worn my hair in double french braids, dutch braid, messy bun, half-up, down, dutch braid headband, french braid and my standard ponytail in a variety of places (high, low, medium, etc). I have no favorite hairstyle for summer! It depends on the day, weather and how my hair is cooperating. Most of the time it’s in some sort of ponytail it seems.
I went to get a trim on my hair today and my hairdresser ended up cutting a whole inch off the back of my head! That inch took five whole months to grow! She also cut my bangs a wee short and you can tell because you can totally see my cowlick there. It normally behaves when my fringe is a tad longer. I’m okay though. It could have been a lot worse. Hair grows back….just very, very slowly in my case. 🙂
jane says
i used to wear in a low messy bun all the time in the summer.. but now i do a really high messy bun 😀
bunnybuns says
girrrrll bay area weather is ridiculous! i was planning to straighten my hair today but adding heat to my already hot body temperature i couldnt take it. messy buns & ponytails are my fave when the weather trips out like this : )
Karen says
Hi Bunnybuns,
Yah! It’s usually pretty comfortable up where I live in Marin county, but yesterday was downright cooking. I loved it though. 🙂
Have a good day and stay cool!
Vampy Varnish says
I love hair accessories and I can play around a lot with my long bangs with clips and bobby pins, etc. I LOVE headbands, but am prone to get headaches when I wear them no matter how loose they are, grrr.
I always have a hard time once it gets to my shoulder area also because one side of my hair always tends to flip out the “wrong” direction when it’s medium length and it drives me insane. I am going to TRY and muscle through that phase though this time!

I’d answer to “Glossimer”! 😉
I got all curious last night and went searching around on the web… no Tokidoki Hair accessories, but I did find this super-cute Ukiyo5 bow hair clip, I think I’m going to order it today! 🙂

I usually wear my hair straight and down, sometimes pinning back my bangs. If it starts bothering me, I’ll do a quick messy bun at the bottom of my neck and either leave my bangs down, or pin them up.
Meream says
Messy bun or braid. But only because I hate my hair these days.
Dao says
I’m more of a “letting it all hang out” person since my hair is longer now. At home, I tie it up in a bun and before going out, I just let it loose. Gisele’s hair all the time, y’all!

Mine is in a ponytail or bun, high, mid or low almost all summer long! I’ve never managed to figure out how to french braid my own hair, and I would LOVE to be able to do it. I think what I need is someone to actually hold my hands and braid my hair a bunch of times, so I get used to the feeling, but that sounds crazy and I doubt there’s anyone willing to do that 🙂
