Desperately seeking volume? Come hither, my flat-haired friends.
This week the follicle fiends at Redken sent me some preview products from Body Full, their new hair care line to cleanse, condition and style baby fine hair.
But since my mane lives more at the unruly/thickeningly out-of-freaking-control end of the hair spectrum, these four lovely ladies will need to find a new home.
Who’s down for a giveaway? 🙂
The prize
One beautiful babe will win four items from the Redken Body Full line (a $59 value) — created for ladies (and gents) seeking touchably soft hair with added volume.

- Body Full Light Conditioner ($14): A lightweight moisturizing conditioner
- Body Full Instant Bodifier ($16): A liquid-to-foam, body-enhancing mousse to protect baby fine hair from heat damage
- Body Full Volume Amplifier ($16): A thickening spray for added volume and texture

Very occassionally, I’ll tease the roots. I’ve also heard that Big Sexy Hair’s volumizing spray works really well, so I’m going to try that soon.
Lisa says
I blow dry my hair upside down so that I get more volume!
♥♥
Brinki says
Whoo hoo! I have really heavy hair and it’s hard to achieve fabulous volume. One of my favorite tricks is to add mousse before blow-drying my hair upside down. Then, I put a couple of bit velcro rollers in at the crown, blast with more hot air from the hair dryer, and then let it sit while I get ready. Spray with a light hairspray and then let the curlers loose for some decent volume, even with the heaviest hair!
.-= Brinki’s last blog post… Like This =-.
Katrina says
Hi Karen, I have tried everything to give my hair more volume. I blow dry it upside down, I use root lifter, I use huge velcro rollers, I tease it. Heck, I thought cutting my hair off would help but it didn’t. I do like the Tresemme 24 hour body Finishing Spray – I think that works best on my hair.
Step says
Nothing works all that well on my hair except getting my hair layered so the top has less weight to hold it down. Usually I cheat volume by putting some mousse by the crown and doing that mini-poof hairstyle. My hairstylist tried to teach me how to tease and I think I got a good 1/8th inch of volume once. Little victories.
Genesis C says
Hey Karen!
Personally, I have tried a number of tricks. I like to spray some root-voluminizing spray (I could only afford things like Tressemme or Garnier), and I blow dry my hair upside down with a diffuser. I then add in some mousse while I’m blow drying it to set in the style. If I am straightening my hair, I will blow dry it with a large round brush upwards to give it a little lift. Having enough volume has always been a issue for me cause I have such long hair, but I try my best! 😛
Lisa says
Since I’ve got curly locks, I blow dry my hair upside down with a diffuser (yes, the scary ones from the 80s!) to pump up the volume!
Sarah says
The best way for me to get volume in my hair is by sleeping in wet hair – its slightly unruly, but VERY volumized. Then I wake up, hot roll it, and I have pretty good hair for the day. It does get progressively flatter as the day goes, but not too flat, but thats probably because I don’t use any sprays to hold style.
These sound nice – I may just have to pick up small sizes at Ulta later…
Avery says
Like Lisa, I also have curly hair. But I look like Medusa if I use a diffuser, so I just use my hands to scrunch it up. If I am blow drying my hair straight, I’ll blow dry upside down to get that extra body.
Melissa Nice says
I tease the roots and apply volumizing products, but alas, have never found anything to plump up my fine hair!!
Deb says
I use Tressemme’s 24 Hour Body Mousse and blow dry upside down however it doesn’t do as much as I hope it would :/.
Julianna says
I like to blow dry my hair upside down 🙂
Amanda says
🙂 Cool contest Karen! I’m a baby fine haired gal so I would love to try these. One of my best tricks for volume is…….old school hot rollers. It’s about the only thing that works on my hair to give it any volume, especially up top. But, it’s a PITA so I only do this on very, very special occasions-maybe 2x/year.
Lisa says
I usually apply hairspray around the roots and blow-dry upside-down. My hair is pretty voluminous anyway, so this makes it huge!
Sandy says
I havent found the ideal solution yet, but I use a few spritzes of Neil George volumizing spray at the roots, then a handful of Tousle Me Softly mousse, a few blasts with the hair dryer, and generally I’m good to go!
Michelle says
I use a volumizing mousse and use a round brush to blow my roots upward — then I flip my hair over and finish blow drying my hair upside down. I always tease my roots and spray with a hairspray that isn’t too hard. Ahhh — I am always looking for new products for my baby fine hair!!
Karen M., says
I put volumizing mousse . I also blow dry my hair upside down to get a lil extra vloume..
tousledkitten says
This might be obvious to many but I find that allowing my hair to air-dry gives it a lot more volume than blow-drying it!
Shiny says
My hair has gotten really thin over the last few months and my usual volume is gone. I used to flip it upside down before styling which did the trick but now I think I need to take a more drastic approach. I might try some of the tricks suggested in the comments!
Sarah R says
I back comb my crown like crazy!!! I am all about the big beautiful hair:)
brittany says
sleeping in braids!!
Kate & Zena says
Blowdrying my hair upside down. All the volume minus the icky and hair-destroying backcombing.
Ana says
I have really flat roots 🙁 and there’s not much I can do. I usually just blow my hair upside down and put some mousse on it. It would be great to try those products!
Susan says
I have curly, but very fine hair, so mousse works best for me. I also blowdry it upside down (no diffuser). I end up with BonJovi hair circa 1986, but it settles down by the time I leave the house 🙂
Megan **** says
I use various Redken products because I heat style my hair practically every day, whether it be straightening or curling my long, way-too-thick-hair. For a little bit of extra volume, I add some BigSexyHair Root Plumper on my crown before I style, then if I have the time, I will tease the top too. l have been itching to get my paws on another brand’s volumizer, but with the holidays approaching as quickly as they are, I just can’t risk wasting my money on anything that won’t do as it claims. I would love to read some reviews on hair products from you sometime soon 🙂 It would be very helpful.
Hope you have a great Tuesday! 🙂 How is your weather up there in SF, btw?
Nicole says
I try and ‘tease’ my hair but I’m doomed to have flat, fine hair for the rest of my life 🙁
Trude says
My hair is really fine but there’s a lot of it, so I use Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic at the roots, paired with their Phomollient foam. When I start blow-drying I make sure to lift and blast the roots, then use the Marilyn Tuxedo big round brush – totally makes a difference!!
.-= Trude’s last blog post… Cheryl’s Visit =-.
SammyJ says
I use the phytovolume actif to give my hair a little lift.
Maicy says
I have fairly thick and naturally straight hair that I have a love/hate relationship with! I use hot curlers to volumize & style my hair. I wrap my entire head with 1″ curlers but before wrapping the sections at the crown, I spray L’oreal Elnett hairspray and tease it. I let the curlers cool for 20 minutes. When I take em out my hair is HUGE, I don’t comb or brush though it, just shake my head a bit as my hair tends to flatten out just a bit… Sounds kinda complicated but the style lasts for a couple days! Before bed, I put my hair up in a high bun. The next morning, the curls & volume are retained 🙂
Alison says
I tend to have the best luck when I sleep on damp hair fanned out behind me across the pillow. I look like Medusa when I wake up, but a little coaxing and I’m nice and bouffant!
Nadine says
I go to sleep with my hair wet and when I wake up, I strangely have some volume! When I air-dry my hair during the day, I end up with flat, listless hair.
Tisa says
Lol…I try a little bit of everything! Sometimes mousse, sometimes brushing underneath my hair,…always looking for new ways and new products! ~ 🙂
RLW says
I add my usual products, then use spray gel up at my roots and clip up my curls with clippies.
When I take them out, my hair is almost dry and I have some “pouf” at the crown!
Veronica C. says
I use Big Sexy Hair and it works.
Nicole says
I blow dry my hair upside down and when I use a flat iron I make sure I place the iron 1″ away from my roots to avoid minimizing the volume in my hair.
Sophia says
I like to scrunch my roots while they’re still wet with my curling products and then use the diffuser really close to my roots.
Janet says
I put mousse in freshly washed hair and blow dry with head upside down and flip up…lots of volume!!
Nessa says
I blow-dry my hair upside down, concentrating on my roots.

I’m actually blessed with tons of hair (which I kinda hate) so I don’t need to worry about adding volume. However, when I do, I blow dry my hair upside down.
Tiffany says
Nothing seems to add volume to my hair! I try volume spray or dry shampoo but nothing works 🙁
Heather says
Tease, tease, tease! And lots of hairspray! I also spray my hair upside down to add some extra oomph!
Luciana Lima says
I put some volumizing mousse and blow-dry it
Toni says
I blow dry my hair upside down to help increase volume. When my hair is dry, I also bend over at the waist and then toss my hair back as I come up and immediately spray to help keep the volume up.

Zoe Lee says
I let my curls air dry for about 90% of the dry..then I flip over and spray Paul Mitchell wax..for BIG curly hair…thanks..Z
Dana Cronin says
Ok so far this is the only thing I have been able to find that will give me crazy volume and not fall flat during the day.
Schwarzkofp – OSIS – Dust It
Amazing product that you sprinking on your roots then tease, it will get huge and you can reactivate it throughout the day by putting your fingers in your roots and giving them a good rub it will grow again. Amazing but it really dries your hair out and it makes mine even more staticky than usual. But it’s great for a night out!
I already use some redken products and would love to try their Body Full Line.
xoxo
G says
Scrunch it.
Molly says
Got2B 2Sexy mousse- This stuff is like.. a Pammie boob job for your hair. My hair’s pretty normal, color damaged, but medium-thick hair: a good pump of that, combed through my hair upside down, and FOOMP! Suddenly, I have GIANT voluptuous hair that actually holds a curl for more than ten minutes.
Rebecca says
Okay, I’m gonna sound like a total brat for complaining about this, but my hair is naturally a little too voluminous for my liking – it just gets unmanageable sometimes!

Jennifer K says
I only use conditioner on my ends, and then when I blow dry I brush my hair in the opposite direction from which I will be wearing it.
Jenna says
I hang my head/hair upside down when blow drying. My hair is fine and is in desperate need of some volume, and I like the way it gives my hair a temporary boost!
Becky says
Though it doesn’t work as well as I want, I put mousse on the roots of my hair and blow dry it upside down for some lift.
Jane says
I use my revlon ionic hair dryer with the metallic brush attached to blow dry my hair. It automatically gives a lot of volume coz of the large barrel.Plus after I am done i like to flip my head down and do a cold blast..that really seems to pump it up.
Tara says
I use a spray, leave in conditioner, it doesn’t weigh down my hair as much as a cream. Then I dry it using a round brush starting at the roots. That is usually good for 2 days, then its scarf or hat time!
T says
To get volume I just hot roller my hair and tada! volume, course it doesn’t stay for very long 😀
Melissa says
Bumble & Bumble holding spray at the crown on damp hair, right before blow drying. It works!
Stacy Z says
I blow dry my hair upside down. I have really fine, Asian hair so usually that helps a little!
Kerry says
I have really straight, fairly fine hair that is all one length, so it tends to just lay flat (like a pancake) against my head. Most products tend to weigh my hair down, so I skip that and simply blow dry my hair upside down, focussing on the crown. This lasts pretty much the whole day 🙂
Elaine R says
I always blowdry my hair upside down to give my hair volume.
Carol L says
I just blow dry my hair upside down.
Vanessa H says
Happy Tuesday!
I use a HUGE round brush to blow dry my hair and the Garnier volumizing conditioner that you reviewed a few weeks ago 🙂
Jenny says
I rub in John Frieda’s Frizz Ease Mousse and then blow dry my hair upside down! Instead volume. Then I tease it like crazy. 🙂
Emily says
Blowdry upside down. Still doesn’t get too much volume. My hair is hopeless!
Brittany says
The only product I use is Sexy Hair’s Root Pump Plus. I’m not sure if it does world’s difference to my hair. I of course do all the tricks–drying upside down, teasing it lightly, etc. I need all the help I can get!
Kypris says
In Europe, l loved Nivea’s heat-activated mousse – I would put it into my damp hair, blow-dry upside down, and voila! Beautiful volume. The mousses here that I’ve tried so far tend to make my hair look a little greasy…
Tatiana says
Tease tease tease!
Kristal says
Hi,
I tease, tease, tease. As it is just about the only thing that works. I’ve been wanting to try a spray that boosts roots, but I haven’t got to it yet.
nada says
i tease my hair occasionally which doesnt work all too well. it falls flat by the end of the day :[
Anita Ching says
It’s all in getting the right haircut. If you don’t have the right haircut, volumizers, rollers, mousse etc will not work! I know! The key is to get layers in all the right places and lengths.
Lulee says
i like to backcomb my hair and spray it with hairspray
xtina says
I use this awesome stuff called Volume Fusion Spray by Eufora. I LOVE it. I have the thickest, most asian hair you could possibly get. It gives me AMAZING volume when I blowdry my hair upside down. I LOVE IT!
Sarah says

My hair gets pretty big on its own, so I’m usually trying to tame the volume DOWN. But in winter when there is little humidity, I’ll blow-dry it upside down to give my roots some lift!
Heather T. says
I can’t do anything to get olume in my hair besides with a Pantene shampoo and conditioner! (I am “hair stupid” like Temptalia said but makeup smart).
Hayley says
I use voluminizing mousse and root spray.
Cora says
I cant really get volume in my hair… my asian hair isnt so fun to have. The only thing I can do is wash it and blowdry it for a little volume :]
Veronica says
i always get my haircut with lots of short choppy layers and i blowdry from the roots.
Jess says
I sleep with my hair damp poofed up around my head.
Janelle says
Blow dry your hair upside down!
L says
Nothing too exciting — I just flip my head over!
Pollyanna says
For me the best technique is to use Tresemme’s 24 Hour Body root boosting spray. I like that it comes out as a fine mist and once you blow dry the hair, you get tons of volume! It’s quite a light formula but it still achieves maximum results. I usually suffer from very flat hair so to transform that into big voluminous hair makes it a holy grail in my books!
Kelly says

blow drying my hair upside down and teasing is what I do to get volume though it goes down by the end of the day 🙁
Cindy (Prime Beauty) says
I have a lot of hair but it’s very fine and not fine as in “yo, sistah yo hair is fine” but as in I look like a wet baby chick fine. I blow my hair dry pulling in the opposite direction I want the volume ie: if I want the left side to have volume, I dry blowing to the right side. It works, plus I always give a good shot of cool air at the very last.
thanks for doing this giveaway!

I blow dry my hair upside down and use Victoria’s Secret mousse! That does the trick! 🙂

After I dry and flat iron I section the top and put a few velcro rollers in. Spray with Sebastian Shaper Plus and blast it with heat, repeat, then a cool shot. Leave them in about 10 minutes remove, arrange and a finishing spray.

I got a Japanese straight perm about a year ago, so my hair is SUPER flat. There’s not much I can do, and normally I’m too lazy anyways. I guess I’ll add a little mousse or blow dry it upwards if I have any time
Jenn says
Tease it and add a little mousse.
Nicole says
I blow dry my hair upside down or just blow dry the top sections while pulling my hair straight up with my brush.
Valentine says
I have longish curly hair, so when I need extra volume throughout the day, I flip my hair over, run my fingers through it, and lift the shorter layer at the crown. I know, pretty pricey, right? 🙂
Morgan says
OOOO! I love big hair! I blast on root pumper spray DIRECTLY on my roots, none of this spraying mousse in the hands first business. Then I blowdry my hair with my head flipped upside-down from start to almost finish. Once about 85% dry I use a round brush at the roots for extra volume. This creates volume that lasts almost all day!
.-= Morgan’s last blog post… You’re It! =-.

I use the entire Big Sexy Hair line (the hairspray and backcomb in a bottle are my faves!) and tease the hell out of my hair. People always stop and ask me how I get so much volume and my hair is thin!
Diana Kim says
I blowdry my hair upside down and spray a little bit of hairspray at the roots of my crown. It seems to work okay but I know theres better out there!
Maomao says
Love this stuff!
Konnie says
Nothing original here, I just always blow dry my hair upside down! And sometimes when I use a straightening iron I iron the roots with my head upside down which works quite well too! (not sure how good it is to iron near the roots though…)
trin says
blowdry hair upside down using hairspray.
Bree says
I use bumble and bumle spray lotion, it smells soooo good. Then I put in redken root spray and turn my head upside down(that sounds s bit funny..he he he) then blow dry with a boar hair large round brush. It doesn’t always work, but it’s the best I’ve found yet.

Brooke says
I’ve gotta do A LOT to get some volume… but the best way is to use a certain type of round brush while I’m blow drying my roots. I don’t use much else, so maybe it would be good to win this 😀

Abigail says
Mm… i put some volumizing mousse from Garnier… and blow dry upside down… that’s all… i don’t like that much volume…
Petra says
I let my hair take it’s time to dry, either I might go to bed with it still damp (not wet!) or I wash it and go for a walk if it’s a windy day. Weird but the wind drying my hair makes my hair look quite glamourous! 😉

Nancy says
I’ve cut my shoulder-length hair short cropped now, so lots of volume would only make it look bad. What I’ve done to get subtle volume is put an attachment on my blow dryer that allows direct air on a certain part of my hair. It’s does the job perfectly!
Alyssa says
While still in the shower, I take some of LUSH’s Big Shampoo and massage it just into my roots with my head upside down, rinse and then dry. Then I again tilt my head upside down, but some heat tamer into the roots and spread it around with my fingers and style =)
Lisa W says
My hair is super thick yet also super flat at the roots, and I still don’t really know what I’m doing with it. Generally, I put volumizing mousse at the roots and then blow dry upside down, but it doesn’t do all that much. !!!
firefly says
When my hair is still wet, I flip my hair upside down and comb it that way. It helps if you blow dry it too! However, it only helps for a while for me.
Megan says
I take sections of damp hair, hold them straight up in the air, and blast the roots with my dryer until they are dry. Then I lay the sections down going towards my face so they cool off and retain that height. If i’m going for all-day hold, I’ll throw the sections up into velcro rollers and let them sit while I do my makeup. When I take the rollers out I can tousle my hair, run an iron through my bangs, and I’m out the door with fab hair that lasts most of the day (a miracle since my hair is usually fallen by the time I walk out the door).
