G’mornin’ and happy Thursday, ladies! Following up last week’s thought provoking and in-depth examination (haha!) of Goody Spin Pins ($6 for a pack of two), here are some pictures of these marvelous little pins in action.
Two of these can take the place of 15-20 bobby pins! Here’s what I’ve been doing when I wear them:
First, I spray Bumble & Bumble Styling Lotion ($23) on my dry hair to give it some hold (any similar styling product would work). Then, I twist the hair into a bun and screw one Goody Spin Pin through the top and another up from the bottom of the bun.
It’s really that simple. In less than five minutes, my hair’s done, and I’m staring down at a stack of unused bobby pins on the counter and thinking, “Goody, where have you been all my life?”
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Out of curiosity, when you’re in a HUGE rush, how do you wear your hair?
mkdallas says
These things are so awesome, they’re like, life-changing, lol. I use them EVERY FRICKIN’ DAY, mainly cause I get hot flashes and have to keep my hair off my neck, but the buns are so unstructured and hip. Goody needs to make some more tools like this. I’ve got the Modern Updo-Maker (using it now, actually), which is great…but only works for me about 50% of the time. FYI on that one, your hair’s so thick, I don’t know if it would hold it, but the youtube. videos show people with thick, wavy hair inserting the tool through the side of the twist, rather than from the base, which seems to do a great job.
Karen says
I’m think I’m gonna try the Modern Updo-Maker next. Or maybe that Snooki-poof thing-a-ma-bobber.
Lowelli says
The bumpit!!! haha!!
Elle says
I got the Goody Snooki thing…and I think my hair is a wee bit too thick to notice a difference since my hair looks nothing like the pics on the box. I love these though 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation Karen
Karen says
Good to know! I have thick hair so I might need some extra styling product to make the Snooki happen!
Karen says
Yeah! I wanna put, like, five of ’em in my hair… LOL!
Tracy says
That is so cool! I have to get these. I totally fail at doing my hair.
Pony tail is the standby for me when in a hurry-or pin the bangs out of my way!
Karen says
I was better at it when I was younger and had more patience, LOL!
Tiffany says
I tried to use these once and failed miserably. Do you know of a cheaper alternative to the bumble & bumble? Maybe some styling product would help me out.
Karen says
Any old hair product that will give you a little hold will do — a mousse, hairspray, spray gel, etc.!
Fieran says
I made a small mistake of getting my hair relaxed (it’s a Japanese hair treatment that makes thick wavy hair look all straight and sleek and is supposed to last for a year) so now that it is growing out, it looks quite messy. I try to wake up early to get it into shape – blowdry or flatiron but if I can’t, I use a plastic headband with zigzag edges to push the front poof away from my forehead. It’s a good way to take attention away from the bushy hair. Just gotta wait till the hair grows out again. Will probably never do anymore straightening, though 😉
Karen says
I’ve heard that the grow out portion can be rough. Maybe you can use this as an excuse to buy some pretty scarves? You can fold ’em and then tie them around your head to create cute headbands.
Fieran says
Ohhh Karen, now that is tempting 🙂 Giving me an excuse to hunt for headbands.
Anna says
How do you get them out again, do you have to “unscrew” the pins? It’s hard to imagine these pins at work, it just sounds slightly painful! hahaha. Your hair looks lovely though, me like the highlights =)
Karen says
Yes, you have to unscrew them. And nope, they’re not painful!
Carissa says
I’ve wondered about these often. I’ll have to pick a few up. If I’m in a hurry, I’ll just pin it up or put in a pony tail, though I am thinking the elastic might be damaging. Oops. :-/
Karen says
Hi Carissa,
Have you ever heard of the Goody Ouchless elastics? They’re the only kind I like:

Shannon says
How I would love to be able to use these! *long hair envy*
Shorter hair (mine is hanging around these days right between my chin and my shoulders) can be a challenge when you’re in a rush since you can’t really throw it up into a bun or a ponytail with any sort of ease. If I, say, wake up late for work, I’ll usually throw some powder in my hair (my hair gets unfortunately greasy after just one day, boo!) and pin up a bunch of small bun-like sections, usually about 4-5, kind of in a large cluster on the back of my head. It’s totally imperfect, but I’ve always gotten SO many compliments when I do it (even one time when I just pinned it up in the bus on the way to work!). It is one of those hairstyles where you have to be comfortable with it not looking exactly how you expect it to, and you DEFINITELY need to carry around a couple pins for those stray pieces that pop out throughout the day. It’s still one of my favorite uber quick ways to do my hair, though!
Karen says
Hi Shannon,
I chopped off my hair into a chin-length bob a few years ago, and I remember that in-between stage all too well. The *second* I could feel the hair brush against my neck I’d start feeling the need to chop chop chop! It took a few tries. Wish I would’ve thought of your hairstyle at the time… it sounds really cute! And easy!
Jenny says
I actually just found these at my local walmart yesterday and it took a few tries to get it right. I think it helps if I tie my hair in a pony tail first because I have more control of how my hair frames my face. Gonna take them out on a stress test today!
Karen says
It took some practice for me too. If your hair has trubs staying put you could also try applying a styling product to add some hold. Good luck, and lemme know how you do!
Sarah says
Have 2 sets of these!! LOVE them!!
Karen says
Funny, I was thinking that I need a second set (maybe to keep in the car, LOL!).
Gaelle says
I really want to try them but I can’t find a retailer in France or Europe! 🙁
I wash my hair everyday & I usually keep them straight but sometimes I do a pony tail or a bun…
Karen says
Oh no! Hopefully they’ll make it out your way soon.
Danielle F. says
LOL! I had to comment. I am wearing them in my hair today! So simple especially when I don’t feel like blowdrying for 30 minutes (seriously, I have long thick hair)! Twist, twist done! Love it! And yes, putting my hair in a bun before was difficult because I had to put in SO many pins. All the jabbing, poking, pulling eep. This makes my life so much easier when I am short on time or patience. Glad everyone likes them as much as I do. I should buy more….you know, just in case the world falls apart and Goody stops selling them!
Karen says
I suspect there would be a serious revolt if Goody ever stopped selling them, LOL!
Janine says
I love these pins. My hair is a bit on the wiry side which makes for slight control issues, plus I’m usually twisting my hair up partway through the day, without a styling aid, so sometimes I have to try a few times to get the pins in the optimal spot. But usually it’s twirl (hair into a bun), twist (one in the bottom and one in the top) and done, much like your quick-bun action. Genius. And when I let my hair down later — pretty waves, without the weird kick I’d get if I’d used an elastic to secure it.
Karen says
The waves are an added bonus.
applepark says
I need these pins! My hair is super heavy and always falls out. I like how you drill them into your hair! lol
Karen says
Hi Applepark,
My hair’s thick and heavy too. I didn’t think these would work for me at first, but I’m so glad they did!
Lauren says
I’ll have to wait until my hair is grown out before I can try these. It’s in that awkward stage of being not too short but not long enough to do fun/cool things with.
When I’m in a hurry I just brush my hair and go. Luckily my hair is nice enough to do that for me. 🙂
Ru says
Ran out and got these after your review post, and to the marvel of all the females in my family, it worked nicely on my long, silky, heavy, thick hair. The hold feels good- not super tight or painful, but also not like its about to fall out. However, if you have layers- like I do- it doesn’t capture all the strands so a few bobby pins and hair product is helpful.
Gonna try this tomorrow with some product like you suggested!
Jess says
Ooh, I need these. I normally slap my hair into a high ponytail when I’m in a hurry but this looks much more classier. I’m going on a hunt for these today. I hope they sell them in Canada.
Nina says
Ohhh that looks totally awesome! So nifty! 🙂
I miss using mine. 😀
Gaelle says
This is so unfair!
Liz! says
Pretty 🙂 Those look cool, I’ll have to swipe them up the next time I’m at Target!
When I’m in a rush I put some leave in conditioner or texturizer in my hair and spritz in a spray of some kind, like another leave in conditioner, sea salt spray, or there’s a B&B tonic spray that I really like too….I have a few different combos that work, it’s whatever my mood is that day. My hair is wavy, so I like to do that just to refresh the waves. Then I either leave it like that or pin a section of my longish side bangs back, depending on what I’m going to do.
Amber says
I wish I had tried these before I cut my hair because they look fun! Now I don’t have enough hair for them.
My hair only takes about five minutes, but if I can’t wash it I’ll apply something to perk up the curls and use a couple barettes to pull the top part back. If it’s too much of a disaster for that, I put a thick headband on.
Katelyn says
Lately I put it up in a messy bun or I just a little texturing product and a headband (sometime in combo with the bun if my hair is to unruly and I’m in a rush)
lexi says
Cute on you, however my bun would be puny….sad face.
My bad hair rememdy – pony tails or the half up/half down look using a tiny butterfly clip. Boring – I know!
Katrina says
I’m going to have to give these a try…do you think they would work as well in super thick wavy hair?
Appu says
I wanna try this one now! Seems like something that will work for my hair 🙂
Kim says
Looking lovely! Of course, my go-to look when I’m in a hurry is a ball cap with my fave player or team logo on it. You know, ’cause I’m sporty that way. 🙂
Shannon R says
I haven’t tried these, but if you are up for new hair gadgets, you have to get a Zann Clip. I think they are only available online or in New York Barneys, but they are amazing! I can use the same clip for every possible hairstyle – hair half up, pony tail, french twist, bun, messy looking updo, etc… And I even wear it to workout and nothing moves. I have a lot of hair and the large works for all of that…if I had thinner hair then I’d stick with the medium. The small is extra small, so probably only good for putting a bit of hair up. This is a life-changing hair accessory! (And I have no connection to them other than being a loyal customer. I should look into getting commissions though…)
Kayann says
I love these!! I’ll put one in my hair and use the other one in my daughter’s hair! LOVE!
gio says
I’d love to try these, they look fun and handy!
Amy says
Your hair looks gorge!!! Love the shine, I’m jealous.
evo says
i’m gonna try this out.
those ppl who live in western canada, london drugs has them on sale for $4.99!
Jess says
Thanks for the heads up! I’m on a hunt for these tomorrow. 🙂
Karen says
Yay! Let me know what you think of ’em. 🙂
Rachel says
Your last post finally convinced me to take the $6.00 plunge and I love them! I find tha they don’t hold as well once I’ve flat ironed me hair, but they are AMAZING if I just let me normal texture do it’s thing. Thanks for the pictures!
Joy says
Add me to the fan club for these; they really are fantastic.
jana says
karen your blog is so evil! after you posted your original post about these spirals, i went out and got… 2 pair! they are great… if something can hold up my thick, coarse, heavy hair, you know it’s a winner!
Rica says
I saw that at Walmart the other day. I’m totally intrigued. Karen, can you do a MBBTV on how to use this? I’m really bad when it comes to styling my hair. I usually just leave it as is. =P.
x
Rica
Karen says
I love these. My hair is super thick, so I used to always need to use regular hair bands to put my hair in a bun. But with two of these, no problem. I even tested them out by sleeping with them in my hair, and when I woke up, my hair was still in a bun!
Phyrra says
I pull it up in a pony tail or clip it up and let it waterfall over the clip.
The Budget Socialite says
Your hair looks so cute! I love these!
Dao says
You know what, this thing could have come out about 2 months sooner and I would have been very happy. My hair is short now so I won’t need this. But in 2 years, baby, Goody and I will be talkin’ 🙂
helena says
I just got these from Target after reading your post. They are AMAZING!!
Karen says
Hi Helena,
So glad to you like these! Yay!
HanaBerlin says
Karen your hair looks very pretty! I love your highlights.
Karen says
Thanks, Hana! 🙂
Jessica says
I want these so bad but everytime I go to cvs target or rite aid they never have the brunette one 🙁 I guess blondes don’t use these things.
Karen says
Bummer! If you’re desperate to try them you can buy ’em online at Walgreens!
makeup morsels says
I’ve been trying to hunt these down ever since i saw your first post on them, but CVS is always sold out of the brunette ones! *bummer* I’ll try again this weekend. When I’m in so much of a hurry that I don’t even have time to brush my hair, I’ll do one of two things. If my hair happens to be having a bad day (and poofing on top), I’ll wear it half up. If it’s relatively well-behaved, I’ll just run my fingers through it a few times and fiddle with my sidebangs lol. Super low-maintenance.
Karen says
I’m starting to believe that bangs are the beauty god’s gift to lazy women everywhere. I’ve been using mine a LOT to hide my left brow. It’s like I no longer need to worry about making ’em even anymore!
Terri says
I really like these, but my hair is pretty fine and is only medium length, so the ends of my spin pins tend to stick out of my bun a little (unless I do the double bun, with one bun on top of the other). However, no one has noticed or said anything yet 😉
Karen says
I haven’t tried the double bun yet… I’m gonna put it on my list of things to do this weekend. 😀
Amanda says
bought them! love them!
Karen says
YAY! 🙂
DSM says
These are amazing!! I have to wear my hair in a bun everyday and these are a lifesaver and don’t weigh down my head as much as bobby pins. Thanks so much for reviewing these, you persuaded me to get them. Love your blog!
Karen says
Hi DSM,
I’m so glad that you find these helpful. It’s nice to not have to put in umpteen pins, right?
amy says
I will need to try this one day because I hate bobby pins. Do you know if they work well with fine hair?
michelle says
any tips in putting my hair in a bun without looking like a strict school teacher? I wear glasses too… so that does not help. haha!
Kylie says
That’s friggen amazing. I rock a rather butch haircut, but I will pass on the good news to my sister. I think she would love these!
bisbee says
Just an FYI – when I used to wear my hair long (at least 10 years ago or more) I found a version of these pins and used them, LONG before Goody began making them!
For the past 10 years I’ve been wearing my hair in a short layered bob, straightening it with a dryer…but now I’m letting it grow out, and I’m letting my curls go free (surprisingly, I still have spiral curls – who knew?)! It’s now about shoulder length (I’m growing out the layers), and I’m eventually going to try for just a few inches below the shoulders (of course, with the curls, it looks shorter). I may have to try these pins again, now that I’m getting close to having enough hair to use them!
Your hair looks great in a bun, by the way – I wore mine in a bun for several years when it was long…
saku says
I saw these lots of times. But my hair doesn’t have enough length yet, plus it’s super thick and curly. I’d be scared it would get tangle, even though some curly hair ladies says it’s works. Cute bun and highlights.
Becca says
These are fantastic – I have an arsenal of pins in my bathroom, next to the bed, on the floor, everywhere. I have to use at least 6 of the giant ones for my heavy, thick hair, but these do the trick! LOVE.
NeenaJ says
OMG, these are genius! I bought them based on your review and have shoulder length (like, tops of my shoulders), heavy, thick hair and never thought they would work.
Goody proved me wrong! They are holding my bun up right now. Amazing.
nikki says
does this work well with medium length hair with short layers?
Nina says
I havent seen this here in the Philippines, would love to try it! I have super long straight hair so when its hot (tropical country, so its hot most of the time) i put it up in a bun or do a side braid or a pony tail. I wonder though, my hair isnt very textured. Will these pins hold my bun in place? I find that with regular bobby pins, they just slide and fall off. 🙁
your hair looks amazing Karen! 🙂
a.b.l. says
These look great…hopefully they work when my hair is curly as well!
Spy says
I just got these spin pins but maybe my hair is too fine and my bun is so small that these spin pins stick out. Anyone have the same problem??
