It’s really amazing how far curly hair shampoos, conditioners and styling products have come. During the ’80s products specifically designed for curly hair were scarce. We had L’Oreal Pumping Curls (a spray curl enhancer) and that was IT. Those were some rough years, and I have the bad pictures to prove it!
Fast forward to 2009: now there are entire lines of hair care products for curly hair. 🙂
This week I started testing cleansing, conditioning and styling products from the newly revamped Curly Sexy Hair line. Have you tried these yet?
The Curly Sexy Hair line’s been around for a few years, but I just never got around to trying their stuff until now. The company folks say the new products feature a more moisturizing formula than before — perfect, since my hair’s always dry and thirsty.
Products in the six-piece collection range from $13 to $16. That includes a Liquid Curling Gel spray ($16), Moisturizing Shampoo ($13), Conditioner ($14), Spray Detangler ($15), Curling Creme ($16) and a Spray Foam mousse ($16).
If your hair is on a strict no-silicone diet, it’s important to note that several of the products contain dimethicone (a common de-frizzing silicone relative).
Some curlies believe dimethicone can build up over long-term use and cause frizzy hair problems. I used to be strict about staying away from the stuff, but now … not so much. So many hair products contain it, and with moderate use over the years I’ve never had problems with it. Plus, I just like to keep my options open, ya know?
I really like the green apple scent of the shampoo and conditioner. I haven’t even opened the curling creme or gel yet, but hopefully they smell just as nice.
I’ll report my results after using the products. I hope they work as well as they smell! 🙂

Karen

Karen says
Hi Mishel,
I rocked the leggings/side ponytail/hightop reebok action back in the day, too!
Yup, I’m in California. I grew up in the East Bay… ahh, good times.

I like this brand and really liked it. However, since my hair id dry and damaged from all of the coloring & hot tools that I use on it, I have been trying different moisturizing products. Hope this works for you.

Karen says
Hi Ann,
LOL, remember the cheesy bottle? It has this distinct smell to it, too. I remember going through a LOT of it very quickly.
Heidi says
OMG Karen! LOL. I love your 80’s look. It’s so flamboyant and out there. I wish more women had the guts to wear their hair waist down and flaunt it. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
Would you believe that my hair back then was tame? I had a few classmates who had even bigger bangs and side wings!
dimpy says

Karen says
Hi Dimpy,
Thanks! Man, if I could go back in time I’d hand myself some defrizzing cream! 🙂

Karen says
Hi Yadi,
Oh my gosh! Happy early birthday. 🙂 What are you doing to celebrate?
You know you still look hella young!
Shiny says
Hahaha love the pic, you clearly were a child of the 80’s all the way. I moved to Canada late in the 80’s so I never got quite into the look. Still have those hot pink legwarmers though!!
I would like more reviews on curly products, or if you can refer me to any other sites… summer is coming (supposedly, it snowed again) and I would like to wear my hair au natural. Also do you know anything about salt sprays for curly hair and if that’s a bad idea? Thanks Karen!
Karen says
Hi Shiny,
Oh! Legwarmers! I had some rainbow ones. 🙂
I’ve tried salt sprays before and they just don’t work for me. They make my hair look hella frizzy in a BAD WAY. I dunno… some people get the tousled, just out of bed look from those sprays. I just don’t get it.
Have you checked out the Naturally Curly website? It’s a great curly hair resource!

karen…you looked so adorable even during the 80s and no matter how pumped your bangs was back then, I still envy your long hair. I wish I could grow mine without losing my hair. Ugh!
Karen says
Hi Pia,
Thanks! 🙂 Those were some rough hair years… I shudder to think of all the cans of hairspray I went through.
I’ve read that you can do things to help hair grow along the way. A few years ago I went through a phase where I took fish oil caplets and I swear my hair looked thicker. It also seemed to grow faster, too.

I’m curious to know whether the styling products provide curl definition. I have natural curls and I find that most products fight frizz, but don’t define the curl and add a little bit of weight (my hair is chin length. need to counteract the afro-puff). I’ve been a user of TIGI Curls Rock for sometime now, but I like options!
Love the 80’s pic! I bet if I looked hard enough, I could find my own version. Complete with the big bangs.
evilcharity´s last blog post..evilcharity: Dear iPod: quit telling your lies. I KNOW your battery is not fully charged. You cannot fool me.
Karen says
Hi EvilCharity,
Okay, I’ll make a special note to keep an eye on curl definition.
Have you ever tried Bumble & Bumble Curl Conscious Curl Creme? It kinda expensive but for me it adds shape to the curl and some weight. I like the smell, too.
Anastasia says
I refuse to give up my Aussie scrunch spray LOL I think I had that same jacket… girl, you lookin’ goooood!
Girl with Curl says
When I first started doing the Curly Girl method (no silicones), I followed it strictly but, slowly I’ve been adding back some silicones back to my hair. It’s hard to stay away from the scents of products that have silicones especially Herbal Essences.

Hows that shampoo?
Is there any sulfates?
Michele says
I am in love with the Everpure line!
no sulphates, and color conserving.
I like that. It sold out of CVS when it was on sale.
Karen says
Hi Michele,
Oh, that’s sound like a good one. I haven’t heard of it, so I’ll see if I can find it at the drugstore.
