Dang, Jonathan, where you been all my life? I wish I’d had Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo Brush-On Hair Powder ($19) with me on my last few trips because it would have saved two things: 1) time and 2) space in my luggage.
What’s a dry shampoo? Seriously, they’re liked sliced bread, or remote controls. They temporarily take the place, in a matter of speaking, of regular shampoo and usually come as absorbent powders in jars or aerosol cans. The powders refresh the scalp, add volume to the roots and extend blow-outs by absorbing oil and product buildup. When I don’t want to shower (it happens) or don’t have time for a regular shampoo/conditioning with water, dry shampoos come in quite handy!
Available in three shades — Light (for blonde, white or gray hair), Dark (black, brown or red hair) and Black (for black hair) — Green Rootine Dry Shampoo doesn’t contain any synthetic compounds, parabens or petrochemicals, and it’s also fragrance-free and safe for color-treated hair.
I gave the Black shade a try a few days ago and like how the attached brush makes it easy to apply, even at my roots. The whole thing is like a self-contained shower replacement that fits easily into a makeup bag.
The Light and Dark shades are available now at Ulta, but Black doesn’t drop on counters until next month (they’re taking pre-orders for it, though, on jonathanproduct.com).
What do you think about dry shampoos? Have you ever used one before?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Ooh, how exciting! I’ve only tried one dry shampoo (the Oscar Blandi,) and while I was pretty happy with how it looked… it broke my scalp out and smelled like cheap lemon cleaner 🙁 Ick!
.-= Rae’s last blog post… Two on Tuesday: a bit ‘o Maybelline CS for ya! =-.
Karen says
Oh, that’s a bummer. Give either this or Naturia a try. Both work great!
Nina says
I wouldn’t say no to the Black shade 🙂
Karen says
LOL! 🙂

i LOVE dry shampoo! i’m a 4th day washer (yeah, i know) so this is ideal. When i blow out my hair, it takes forever to finally get perfect, so i go as long as a can without washing, because i can’t bear letting my hard work not go as far as it possibly can! i’ve been using tres semme’s dry shampoo collection lately, and while it smells great, it’s really not doing it for me. i have white-blonde hair, so baby powder is usually much easier and effective on-the-go (plus it brightens my hair up awesomely). the only other dry shampoo i’ve used is Ojon’s-and i LOVE it-except the aerosol sprayer broke :(. i really want to give these a try-thanks kar!
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
When I straighten my hair, I’m one of those fourth day washers, too! I hope this works for ya.

Might be worth a try …. I cant not wash my hair everyday but when im running late, this might be a handy thing to have around!
Karen says
It’s really handy. Plus, you can throw it in your purse for the days you don’t have time to work out the hair situation at home.

Oo i’ve been looking around for a good dry shampoo! i recently picked up treseme’s dry shampoo and its pretty good! I wash my hair every other day, but sometimes i work (at a takeout place with an OPEN kitchen.. read: stinky hair) an extra day or two so i like to use this in between. While it smells citrusy and does a decent job, i dont think i could use it for two days in a row because it does make my hair feel heavy and stickier near the end of the day. 🙁
I have also tried using baby powder, and i think on days when your hair is just a BIT on the oily side, it does wonders 🙂 thanks for this post! i wonder if the brush on ones work better… 🙂

Karen says
Hi Agnes,
Have you ever tried wiping your hair with a sheet of fabric softener? It’s supposed to be really good at removing strong scents from hair.
Jane says
Oh these sound very interesting- I LOVE the colour options! Although I’d wonder if that brush would need to be cleaned?
I’ve used Batiste (the best) Klorane (ok) and Tresemme (bad) – dry shampoos really extend the time between shampoos so I’m being gentler on my hair. The Batiste has a nice clean scent too so it really freshens as well. Could not be without now 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jane,
Nah, I don’t think you need to clean the brush (I didn’t see any reference to cleaning it on the box or the bottle). If you want to, there’s a way to stop the product from flowing through the fibers… You could probably wipe down the bristles with Wet Ones Antibacterials wipes to get it clean.

I love a good dry shampoo, but it has to be the right one! I’ve tried several- Bumble & Bumble, Pssst, Ojon, and Tresemme, but my favorite one performance-wise is Naturia by Rene Furterer. The only thing I’m kind of iffy about is it’s powdery smell (the one by Ojon smells sooooo good, but just doesn’t absorb enough oil for me), but it fades away fast, and it works so well I can over look it. I can only skip a day in between shampoos (I get so envious of those girls who can go like 3 or 4!), so I like to use them especially on days I blow out and straighten my hair so I can save time the next day.
Karen says
Hi Liz!
I love Naturia as well. Out of all the dry shampoos I’ve tried, it’s my fave.

I shower everyday but try to only wash my hair every second day because I live in such a dry climate (Canadian Rockies), so dry shampoo helps to keep my scalp and hair retain their natural oil without looking oily. I use Oscar Blandi, and while the smell is great and it absorbs a lot of oil, I find that it makes my scalp itchy. By the end of the day my hair seems oily again, and I suppose another application of dry shampoo would help, I haven`t tried it yet because I`m worried my hair will get too cakey with powder. I do tend to wear my hair up when I use dry shampoo because my hair still doesn`t feel entirely clean and I don`t like the feel of it on my neck. Dry shampoos are a great option for those days when you don`t have time to shower or just want to maintain your hair`s natural oil.
Karen says
Hi Kathryn,
I feel you on putting the hair up… I do that at around day three or four!

This is a pretty innovative idea! I love the applicator… so cool. I wish I wasn’t so averse to dry shampoo, though. Now that I have short hair, it’s not a big deal to wash it every day, but even when I had long hair, I could only go every other day before I felt way too gross to exist. Dry shampoo may have to be my big beauty challenge if I decide to grow my hair long again for awhile!
Karen says
Hi Lo,
How do you like having short hair? I bet it feels liberating!
Iram says
Oooh this looks so good! I can’t wait until the black one comes out. I’ve only ever tried Batiste dry shampoo which is pretty good although I didn’t really like how you had to spray it on because it takes up time so I can’t wait to give this a go!
Karen says
Hi Iram,
I haven’t tried the Batiste one yet. Have you tried Naturia? That’s pretty good, too.

I like the brush packaging of this dry shampoo because it would apply easily and make no mess. i am using the one by Open Sundaes, while it does its job of absorbing the oil from my scalp it creates a mess because the packaging is baby powder style. The chocolate scent also comes off a bit artificial to me.

Oh, I don’t think I could hang with chocolate-scented hair!

Thanks for posting this, I was wondering about them. Dry shampoos have been a miss for me. It seems like my scalp is getting oiler and oiler, with the hot weather and more gym visits, it’s not helping. I’ve tried Naturia (horrible) and Oscar blandi (ok, but not preffered). I wonder if the brush here will help out a bit- and the color too with my black hair? I’m going to give this a whirl… I just cut off the last of my perm & color, so my hair is back to being straight and healthy, and I’d hate to disturb it with washing everyday!

I actually bought this exact product from Sephora when they were having their most recent 20% sale and I have to say, maybe I’m dumb but I had a really hard time actually getting the powder to come out. I was hoping to get some tips from this article but it seems like most people have never heard of dry shampoo so that didn’t work out haha!
My mom suggested just using face powder because it’s “basically the same thing” – any thoughts on that?

I live in a dry climate, so I need a shampoo that is very moisturizing, but wont strip my hair while cleaning it. Been using the Somaluxe Clarifying Shampoo for 2 months now – its very moisturizing and perfect for dry weather climate. It gives my hair this bouncy young look
