I walked out of the salon yesterday with five inches of hair cut trimmed off, lighter highlights and a new set of bangs. I wouldn’t call it a big change because my hair is still long, but I definitely feel like a different girl with this cut. 🙂
My last dramatic haircut was a decage ago — I chopped off my uber-long locks into a chin-length bob. Although I haven’t made any big changes in the past three years, I don’t rule out going short again in the future.

Karen

Love your new hair Karen!!!
Karen says
Thanks, Sandra!
How’s your day going so far? I hope you’re having a good one. 🙂
Nancy says
Karen! Your hair looks FAB-u-lous! I love the bangs, and the length makes it much “newer”. Not that you weren’t beautiful before, mind you! 🙂 My monthly cut is tomorrow. Over the summer I changed my chin-lenth Katie Holmes bob into a shorter cropped Selma Blair style. It was a gradual change over a few months, but I really like it now. Props to my great stylist. Hope you are having a great day!
Karen says
Hi Nancy,
🙂 Your hair sounds super cute. I wish I had the guts to pull off the Selma!
How’s your day going? Mine’s been okay so far!
Glosslizard says
Super-glamorous, Karen! That new cut would look so sexy with siren-red lips and tons of black mascara!
I just got my hair cut a week ago, same ol’ same ol’! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Oh, good idea. Maybe I’ll do that today for fun. 🙂
How are things with you?
Tavia says
It was a time when I changed my hairstyle very often and from having a very long hair I wake up with a boy hairstyle (that short my hair was). I wanted to return to my long hair hairstyle because I always like it and now they are not so many changes that I would do. I never dyed my hair, I’m still natural blonde so they only changes that I can make would consist in cutting my hair, which I don’t want. My hair is very thin and grows up very slow… 🙂

That’s cool that you’ve never dyed your hair before. I have to because of the grays!

LOVE your new look! Your eyes really pop with the bangs. Can’t wait to see new eye makeup pics with the new do!
Karen says
Thanks Kristina. 🙂
How’s your day going?
Karen B says
Your new do is so cute!
I usually have a pretty drastic change (my mother believes in the getting your money’s worth at the hairdresser’s so just a trim is not something she pays for. This of course has led to some cringe-worthy hair in the past as I was often so stubborn to say: you want to see a chop? You’ll get a chop dammit! which would always end in tears – and way too short hair) but the past year those changes were mainly in hair-colour.
Karen says
Hi Karen B,
Aww, your mom’s hair philosophy is admirable. I don’t have the guts, so bravo to you! 🙂
What color is your hair these days?
Karen B says
These days it’s the bleached (by the sun) version of the dark dark brown. It’s nearly the same as my roots only that the roots don’t have that slight reddish shine but it’s not really noticeable. I’m growing it out now so it’ll be this boring colour for a while and then I don’t know. I’m debating between going back to blonde or going red. Maybe I’ll go reddish blonde? Hehe
mkdallas says
your new haircut is super flattering! Good for you for embracing change~
Karen says
Change is a good thing. 🙂
Hope your week is going well!
Kelly says
Hi Karen! The hair looks fab.
I am a huge risk taker with my hair and always have been. I have no qualms about cutting it super duper short (think Charlize Theron in The Astronaut’s Wife) or dyeing it chocolate brown or pale blonde 🙂 I’m a Gemini so I crave constant change 🙂

Hi Kelly,
I hear that!
Are you still growing out your ‘do?
Candace says
I think your hair looks great!! I have always fluctuated with different styles throughout the years. I prefer short hair. Now it is super boy short and I love it and can’t imagine changing it
Karen says
Short hair is super cute. I wish I had the guts (and the cheekbones) to rock it hard!
I bet it takes you barely any time to do your hair in the morning, huh?
Roxanne says
I used to have really short hair after a friendly but failed don’t-worry-I-know-how-to-do-that-haircut. I walked around with that thing on my head for years (growing it out looked SO ugly). A few years ago, I finally did it and I’m really happy I did. It’s getting pretty long (at least for someone who hasn’t had a decent head of hair in years). I think I’m about ready to pop out a Lady Gaga hair bow, yo!
I think I’ll get pretty tired of it soon though. Gemini, you know 🙂 But for now, I love my manes! They don’t call me Foxy Brown for nothing.
P.S.: That picture made me laugh so hard (the first one, not the second one, you look FIERCE in that one)
Karen says
LOL Roxanne! I’m kinda want a Lady Gaga bow, too!
Kypris says
I mentioned it yesterday, and I’ll say it again – I love your new hairdo! I really like switching my hairdo but it’s tough because I haven’t really figured out what works with my hair type! It’s mixed ethnicity hair, and it’s got a mind of its own, and it isn’t thick and volumous but neither is it straight – it just usually kinks in annoying places. I had longish hair for a while and then chopped it off to a chin-length bob (shorter in the back), but my hair is slightly wavy and it just wouldn’t behave… perhaps I’ll try a funky really short hairstyle sometime, one that calls for misbehaved hair!
Karen says
Thanks Kypris. 🙂
Hmm, have you ever been to a salon that specializes in wavy/curly hair? Maybe if you met the right stylist she could help guide you to a style that takes advantage of your hair type.
K says
I usually do it when I’m bored and don’t like how my hair is looking. Then I’ll go into my room, grab my shears, and start chopping away. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. :o)

I had looong hair for 10 years, until September 2008.Ever since every cut was different, until this year Halloween, I have succeeded to get a very bad haircut (very bad pixie style) and now I ‘ve got something to do.I need to grow my hair again to look like a normal(?) person with normal (nice) haircut .
Karen 🙂
very nice change 🙂 You look great girl 🙂
(unlike me) 😀
Christina says
I used to do it all the time… chop off several inches, color it something completely different, etc. etc. It wasn’t until grad school that I started growing it out (just easier), and then when I decided to donate I obviously waited longer.
While I don’t think I’m ready to go back to my pixie style (circa 2000), I would definitely think about something different than what I’ve got now. 🙂
Especially if it turned out as awesome as your cut and color, Karen!
Susan says
Your new hair cut is Great! Very flattering. I haven’t had the nerve to cut off my hair for a few years now. Last big change was about seven or eight years ago, and I cut about eight inches off at that time. With my curly hair, I have to be careful or I look like a giant poodle! My husband has threatened to buzz his hair off if I cut mine short (after looking at photos of the last short do–he wasn’t around then), so I think I prefer mine shoulder-length for now 🙂
Kelley says
LOVE LOVE LOVE the new cut! It is so adorable and suits your face perfectly!!! I made the same change you did at the same time you did when you did the long sideswept bang with layers a while ago and this gives me confidence to try this look too!!!!! I can’t get over how cute it is!!!
I have always gone between super long and a chin-length bob – it seems like when it gets to be too much to handle I just chop it off, but I would love to try something in between.
Patty says
Wow! Your new cut looks terrific!
ines + cha cha says
gah i like it – looks great on you… i wish i could rock shorter hair, but i need to keep it long for dancing purposes (updos are easier with long thick hair), and the last time i chopped my hair off, it was such a terrible look for me that i’m so scared to try it again!
it was terrible because ihave naturally wavy hair, and it poofed out and curled and looked so FOB-y, with my glasses and all… only thing i could do was straighten the crap out of it and then leave it to grow out. now my hair is generally at a mid-back-waist length depending on when i can squeeze in time for a haircut, and minimally layered because i never really wear it down for heat/weight reasons (i usually braid it or something for dancing)… i have loads of it and it’s doomed to look like disheveled, wavy, “bed head,” which is great i fyou want to pull a brigitte bardot, but not if you want to look nice and groomed.
oh, i managed to get my paws on astral and wild rose glossimers, after looking at your reviews. both are not LE in canada. i don’t know how i lived without these. they’re right up in lip gloss heaven with dior creme de glosses… dior for a subtle, soft sheen, and chanel for blinged out, glassy shine!

Karen,
I love your new do! It’s very stylish like you!
Only twice have I done something really drastic with my hair. Once when I was 20, I went from long straight center-parted hair (it WAS the 70’s) to a super short pixie cut. It was horrible. At 5 ft. 8″ and 112 lbs, that short hair made me look like a newly hatched chicken with wet “feathers”. The other time had much better results went from shoulder length brown to chin length blonde, which is where I’ve stayed. 🙂

first off: wonderful new look! so young but still feminine!
i was always wearing long, sleek, open hair which in times even hit my hips. only shampoo + conditioner, and then air dry. till one day i wanted to have curly hair such as korean drama actors. so i got a perm, which gave me really big, beautiful curls.
so i started to have to use a bunch of products on my hair to achieve the look.
after some months, the work became too much to me and my hair was really destroyed because of the perm.
then i decided, just in a minute, to chop all of it down to a bob that was only a reaching my chin. that was a huge change!!!
now it’s long and sleek again, at one length. now i know that this is the look that suits me the most, every now and then i curl or straight with an iron. no more color, no highlights, no bangs or layers.
but who knows? maybe in a year i’ll have a pixi-cut!
lexi says
Hi Karen,
Love the new ‘do – sometimes even a few inches can make you feel like a new girl! I use to change it up every year then I had a long hair w/bangs phase – I wanted to see how long I could go without it looking heavy. I had bombshell hair for about 4 yrs then fast forward to my pregnancy and my hair got shorter and shorter. Now my daughter is 16 months and I’m sporting a bob above my shoulders with lots of layers – inspired by Debbie Harry’s Blondie days just without the peroxide color.
Enjoy your new hair! Also, when I do change my hair I always say to my husband, “it’s like you have a new wife!”
lexi says
oh forgot to mention – it’s a total B*tch growing out bangs – mine are just now blending in with my bob!
Veky says
You always look fresh no matter your hair sytle or make up
But anyway, I prefer shorter hair on you, it just looks better. Longer *isn’t* bad or anything, but shorter one is better 😀 😉
I had several BIG hair style changes in the past 10 years and the last one was a year ago when I cut my hair from middle-long to short (something like Pink has, a bit longer) and dyed it from black to red (though I’m a natural blonde LOL).
I was thinking to make a change again, I wanted to have platinum blonde hair, but don’t have tho courage yet for that 😀 But, I think I’ll do that because I’m so curious of how would that look on me 😀
*hugs*

I’ve had my hair short-medium for most of my life. But after a really bad haircut two years ago, I decided to grow it out. This past summer (after committing to growing it out for those two years), I donated 9 inches to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. It felt so good! My hair is a little below my shoulders now. I don’t really miss the hassle of blow drying and straightening my long, curly, unruly hair, but I do miss the variety of hairstyles I could do.
Rose says
PS Love your new haircut! The bangs are so pretty!

I like your new hairdo. The bangs really pulls everything together. Sadly I don’t make too many changes to my hairstyle because of an incident I had when I was in 8th grade. Let’s just say I had no idea I was sportin’ a mullet.

The new ‘do looks gorg on you! I’ve had a tendency to make regular changes, I can’t stand it the same way for too long (say, more than a year). But the biggest change by far was cutting blunt bangs over a month ago – people thought I was wearing a wig at Halloween! I haven’t had bangs since I was about 12, so its a big difference. But the goal to look younger: accomplished! 😉 I blogged about it here: http://recoveringfirecracker.squarespace.com/blog/2009/11/17/tagginess.html

The last big change was 3-4 years ago when I have bleach blonde streaks all over my hair (my hair is black naturally). Before that it was when I was in Grade 10/11 when I cut my long hair very short from having hair at boob length to a bob then a few months later I cut it even shorter into a wedge cut (think model Trish Goff in the late nineties/early 2000’s). I have since kept my hair long and plan to grow it past my boobs around mid back. Nowadays, I regular get subtle changes such as cutting blunt bangs and switching to wispy bangs and changing hair colour from highlights to full head colour and vice versa.

Karen, your hair looks awesome! I love it! That is what I wanted my bangs to do, but he didn’t cut them right. I’ll have to take this in next time I go for a hair cut. I think the wildest I get now is getting long bangs cut. When I was in college, I had one of those asymmetrical hair cuts. I loved it, but I don’t think my mom did.
Katrina says
I just made a huge change to my hair this year and I regret it and am currently growing it out. I went from long hair that reached the middle of my back to a super short bob just below my ears. Not good. While I do think the short hair was flattering and super easy to style, my husband hated it and I just didn’t feel like myself. So I’m growing it back out and hopefully will be content with it just below my shoulders because I don’t want it as long this time.
vnssa906 says
K, I absolutely love your haircut! I never noticed how long your hair was before. Very gorgeous!
I’m always afraid of change… I just recently chopped off my shoulder length into a chin lenght bob and I’m glad that I took that step! lol

Looks fab, Karen! I got mine cut Tuesday for the first time in over a year, and I love it! I walked out with my hair curlier than it’s ever been. It’s layered, with much shorter layers than I’m used to. I’m going back next week for highlights (my hair’s totally virgin, I haven’t put color in it in about 8 years!) The trick now is getting it to look like the stylist did. I followed all his directions, and it’s still trying to frizz. 🙁 Of course, I’m coming at it from the front, instead of above…
Jane says
Wowie..love the haircut 🙂 You rock the bangs !!! Next time am gonna take your picture for reference 😉

Sometimes I’ll get all revved up for a BIG CHANGE, but I never leave the salon looking all that different. I guess the stylists usually talk me down from the hair-suicide ledge.

I love your new haircut! Very cute and lovin’ the side swept bags…but I voted “I’ll tell you in the comments”. As a kid, I had very long hair…Then in jr. high, it started getting shorter and shorter…Til about 2003 I had my shortest cut. I didn’t grow it long until I had my upcoming wedding (In march of this year). It took me about 3 years to grow out because during my grow out phase I would try out a variety of cuts to make the grow out phase not so boring…but during one of the cuts, I had a disaster cut, and requested to cut off about 4-5″ of hair *cries* …not to mention my hair grows ever-so-slowly. So after the wedding, I had been wanting to do the ever so famous “PWC” or post-wedding chop. It was halfway down my back! I had to do it in two steps because I was a chicken. First cut got rid of about 7″, and now its a cute little a-line bob…I think I cut off about 11″ in total! Now I’m ready to grow it all out again, ha ha. I do miss my long hair.

I kinda of go through phases. I normally cut my hair twice a year, once in the summer and once in the winter usually chopping off the long barbed wire locks that is my hair to something shorter or more layered. It’s funny because I logged into the site and gushed at your hair cut and told my sis “oh that’s cute, maybe i should cut my hair like that’ to which she replied ‘that’s how you always cut your hair when we go to the salon’ Haha. She got me. That’s why I love your hair cut so much 😛
Shortest Ive cut it was just below my jaw line before spending the summer abroad. I was thinking of getting a ‘lob’ = long bob to liven things up but man, shorter hair is so high maintenance for me….
But anyway, LOVE THE HAIR KAREN!

Lookin’ good darling! Bouncity bounce and bangs! Lurve it!
Oh my… I had mom-haircut bangs until I was about six, and then refused, wanting one-length hair. 3 years later when my bangs were long enough, I got the absolute WORST haircut of my life: chin length, dishwater blond all the way around. On my round, reddish, Scottishish face. Eleven years old, big round blue glasses (oh yeah), and I looked like the school librarian, only older. And flatter.. 😮
That taught me. I grew it all out to almost to my waist, and dyed the last six inches hot pink when I was fourteen. I haven’t seen my real hair color since then, some 8 years ago. Ive gone through deep red, horrid scarlet, bleach blond, medium blond, brown, and everywhere in between. It’s kind of brownish reddish blond now.
BUT I finally went back, tentatively at first, to bangs when I was 17, and ohhhhhh my god it was the greatest thing ever, my hair has had a SHAPE. no more slicked back ponytail facelift, or (shudder) tight as a beeyotch red french braids (topped off with a giant black hoodie, ripped jeans and shit-kicker boots and raccoon eyes. Oh high school, I hated you.)

Nora says
I go in and I tell the stylist, I’m lazy and don’t like styling my hair so nothing that requires too much styling. And that’s it. One stylist did not like that, did not like that at all.
