Happy Thursday, gals! I’ve been thinking about doing something new with my hair for a while (still can’t decide), but I wanted to ask…
How do you keep your salon style?
What tricks do you use to keep your hair looking like you just stepped out of the salon? Do you ever take notes while your hair is getting styled? I’m totally guilty of that one, LOL!
Here’s a video with some of the things I do to get the most out of my trips to the salon.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’m trying to grow my flippin’ hair out right now. Such a pain.
I wish there was some super vitamin that I could take that would cut my wait time in half. I usually get to impatient and cut it all off again.

Hi Pepper,
Your welcome. 🙂 Are you one of those lucky ladies that has wash and wear hair?

Oh this is SUCH a timely video for me, you have no idea. So I cut my hair about 10 days ago (which I was growing out) back into a bob-ish shape, but with a lot of layers so I could either blow it smooth and bob like, or mess it up with pomade and have it piece-y. Well it rocked when I left the salon. Then the next day I looked SOOO dumpy and frumpy! All that week I couldn’t get it to look good! So I went back into the salon and she showed me how to flat iron the pieces out straight so they stood out more and I could get that piece-y look. Well I STILL can’t get it to look good and I am really frustrated. I am now thinking this is just a bad hair cut so I have to wait it out a bit and go back to my old (and ridiculously expensive and busy) hair salon because this just isn’t working! Wah!

Hi P. Potter,
It’s probably different for everyone, but a few years ago when I was consistently taking omega 3 fish oil pills and I swear my hair looked thicker and started growing faster!
Karen says
Hi Vampy Varnish,
Oh, I remember you telling me that you were trying to grow out your hair. Did you cut it on a whim? What made you decide to cut it short again?
Anyway, hmm, it sounds like it might just take you some time and practice to get the styling right. I’ve changed my hair dramatically a few times in the past and seriously, the first two weeks were always pretty bad. By the end of the month I usually figured it out though. I think you just have to be patient and keep trying.
Vampy Varnish says
Yeah I was planning on growing it, but then I saw some pics of cute short hair and was dying for it again (FYI this is a pattern I have been doing for 15 years, LOL!). This does seem to be the hardest cut to style for me that I can remember, it’s weird. I just need to be rich and have someone do my hair and makeup every day for me! 😉

LOL…Umm I totally don’t…and my stylist usually doesn’t style my hair anyway…I generally go after work for a cut…and then head home after. If she ever does style it, she has me part it, she puts some product on it and might give it a quick blast with the blow dryer. Yeah. My hair is so curly…that’s the best option…I don’t even blow dry it myself.
I’ve been experimenting with mine some too. I have to admit that I am not in love now that it’s getting longer. I mean it’s just that it’s a constant battle between dry and too moisturized which = flat all over except for curly ends… which is not big glam curly ends…but curly ends so you look like you hair is jacked… So when it was long last time I wore it up pretty much all the time…which is not the goal here… so I haven’t been wearing it up at all.

Hi Vampy Varnish,
You and me both, homie. I watched this random episode of Cribs a few years ago that featured Mariah Carey. Girlfriend actually has a salon in her house AND a full time beauty team for both hair and makeup. Um, can somebody please hook me up with that?
I remember a few years back when I was growing out my bob the toughest part was feeling the hair growing on the back of my neck! GAHHH! That’s when I’d get tempted to chop it all off!
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I *loved* your Betty Boop bob! How long is it nowadays?
Sisi says
Hey Karen
I have totally the same problem. My friends always tell me my hair looks great once I step out of the style and say it never looks that way ever again. Nice, lol. I jsut can never seem to get the look just right or jsut the same as the hairdresser does it. *sigh* Anyways love your top in the vid!

I SAW that episode, sick! Ok listen to this though (you will barf). I went to high school with Rebecca Romijn, she was in my graduating class. She was so average you would never ever guess she would be a huge celebrity! Oh also in my graduating class was Dave Meyers who I had gone to elementary school with as well. He directed tons of videos on “Making the Video” on MTV as well as a remake of “The Hitcher” movie. It’s SO weird seeing them on TV!

Hi Sisi,
Thanks! It’s a random dress I bought at a thrift shop a few years back. I love it cause it’s stretchy, I don’t have to iron it and it makes me look skinny, ha ha ha!
Anyways, what kind of hairstyle do you have? What kills me is when a stylist does something like a blowout in 20 minutes… and it takes me like, an hour! 🙂

I’m growing my hair long again…i had cut so many layers into it, that the bottom layer is down to my waist but the first layer on top is right above my shoulders… I wish the first layer was lower down. Patience! My hair stylist actually moved up to Oakland, but she comes back down every 6 weeks for her clients and i have to remember to just get a trim.. Feb. 9th is my next appointment!
I loved how my stylist gave me volume and she said “get a HUGE round brush, wash your hair, do your make up and change in the morning and after it starts drying, blow dry it in big sections with the big brush and make sure your dryer has one of the nozzles.” My hair looks soo much shinier than when I would just flip my head over and dry it randomly.
Karen says
Hi Vampy Varnish,
NO WAY! I often wondered what she saw in John Stamos, LOL.
Okay, speaking of brushes with celebrity, I sat right next to Su Chin Pak (of MTV VJ fame) in honors history (yes I was a total nerd). I think I saw her on ER the other night…

I honestly can’t say I have a hard time with my hair… I’m pretty blessed, except for the greys! My biggest trouble is all the short unruly baby hairs! It always seems like I have a whole crop of fuzzy’s on top of my head that I can’t get rid of! I’ve only found one product, by Hemp, that works to tame them… And they don’t make it anymore… I’ve had the tube for like 5 years now, product is still nice inside, but I’m almost out! I don’t know what I’m going to do when it is truly all gone!
Vampy Varnish says
I always wondered that myself!
Wow that’s pretty cool 🙂

OH MY GOODNESS! This is SO called for, you havent a clue. I’m kinda with Vampy Varnish on this- I just got it cut on thursday, and it looked (btw, i mean last thursday) SOO good. but then, I got home and the bangs were too long and the layers flipped out wrong and it was just REALLLY LAME. it wouldnt even straighten right.
So now I put in curling pomade and just wait for it to dry how it wants to (ahhaa, i give in to the hair.) and wear the bangs like sidebangs.
BUT I LOVE THIS VIDEO. 🙂
Thank you for posting it!

Hi Karen,
First of all, this is the first time I’ve seen you on video, and can I just say you are freaking adorable? 🙂
My hair is very similar to yours in the video — long, smooth, and straight. And it only takes a quick wash and dry to get that way. Why, you may ask? Genetics? Good technique? I wish. Two words that cost me a lot but changed my life: Thermal Reconditioning. I chose a New York-based Japanese hair master (I read about him in Allure, don’t laugh) and he did a fantastic job. I only need to get it done once a year and my hair is frizz-free and sleek! I highly recommend it.

How do I keep my salon style? Don’t shower.
Haha. just kidding. sorta. I try to cut my hair just before the weekend or so, so when I do see my friends, family or just walk around in public my hair isn’t so gnarly looking yet. I am totally nerdy with you [asking questions and all] when it comes to getting my hair done but with the big cape thing over me, I can’t really bring myself to write down notes, less I get hairs all over my arms. 🙁 You’re hair looks fabulous in this vid, btw. 🙂

i use bumble products – i heart my round barrel brush and blow dryer. i make do with my cheapie target flat iron. good products really do make a difference.

Hey Karen! Ok everyone’s gonna hate me but um my ‘rents both were cosmotologists before their current gigs. If I need a cut they’re right down the street. They aren’t in my basement but hey its close! Not saying I don’t have bad hair days but they are few and far between. My dad believes in people working with their natural hair texture and mom says that people shouldn’t be afraid to take risks (she recently shaved her head due to some bad hair chemicals.)I do take their stuff to heart. Oh and they believe that one should always have a clairifying shampoo and a deep conditioner at home because you never know what you might need. When picking out styles look for a person with the same hair texture as you do and face shape. Mom and I go to Barnes and Noble to look at the hair magazines for inspiration. A good stylist will tell you what to do. I know this sounds all basic but it has prevented me from having some bad hair cuts and styling probs. Most recently mom got scissor happy and cut my bangs way shorter than I instructed I told her she was lucky my hair grows fast. They were theor desired length in a few weeks! Yeah my hair grows fast! Hope this helps!!

I suck at keeping my salon style. Certainly here in Sweden where I don’t even have a blow-dryer. I usually just loosely dry my hair with a blow-dryer and focus a bit more at the part that keeps on curling (I have like one little curl right at the front of my hair, the rest is pretty straight… it’s so odd)

Uhm, I hope you won´t hate me after what I say, BUT…
I have never ever had any problems with my hair. They are naturally wavy so when I want waves, I just let my hair dry on their own (which is a pain actually, it takes at least four or five hours), when I want something more straight and smooth, I use a hairdryer. I even do not have to use any styling products, my hair just hold the way they dried.
Well, I had a very short haircut for years but I returned to a long one a year and a half ago. Yay! And I really enjoy it every single day 🙂
One last thing (and then you can hate me, I promise) – I go to a hairdresser´s twice a year just to cut my ends, my hair do not need any extra styling or cutting at all.

I must be different from everybody else. I hate to go to a salon. I never like what they do and the way they style my hair, I always think they do a terrible job. If I go to a salon, when I get out, I always look at the ground so that no one looks at me because I think I look terrible. First thing I do when I get home is to step into the shower and wash my hair. I spent many years without going to a salon for a hair cut. I ask my mother to cut my hair. A few months ago I went to a salon for a hair cut and regret it all over again. One week later I had my mother cutting it because I was hating the whole hair style 🙁

Best hair tip ever: I wrap my hair at night.
There are a lot of good tutorial videos on youtube. Just search hair wrap at night. I wake up in the morning, and it’s totally smooth and silky…flat ironed silky. Best of all, I’ve noticed that my ends don’t get frizzy and in need of a trim as quickly. I’ll spray on some Aphogee Keratin spray before I wrap and then put some bobby pins to hold the hair in place. Then on goes my satin scarf. Sure, you’ll look like Aunt Jemima, but your hair will be on point the next morning.

Writing notes is a great idea. I tend to ask a lot of questions on how they are using the products. Thankfully, I have had nice hair dressers who have been willing to tell me what it is going on.
Now that I am back in the area, I need a new hair dresser. Finding the right one is such a daunting task.
