Today I took my first crack at the Jilbere Hot Roller set I picked up from Sally Beauty Supply.
The process was, um, interesting.
Following the instructions (or at least trying to), I managed to get all of the curlers into my hair without burning anything, yea!
That took about 20 minutes (rolling the top and sides)…
Tabs finds the mystery contraptions suspicious
Just after inserting the last batch of rollers, I removed the first ones, aiming to leave each one in about 20 minutes.
After letting the curls cool for a couple minutes, I ran my fingers through everything to break them up.
That resulted in this:
Observe the extra six inches of horizontal width on my head. Kinda like Bon Jovi circa 1986 (SIDE NOTE: I’ve been listening to Dead or Alive all day long).
I was going to give the curls some time to relax, but I started snapping pictures because I couldn’t resist. 🙂
For the Urban Decay Show Pony face of the day, I pulled the top half back and fastened it with a claw clip.
I wanna hug the guy/girl who invented the claw clip!
Of course, I forgot it was there and left it in for an hour, but when I removed it — TADA! — unintentionally loose curls.
I like the way this turned out, but DAGNABBIT it took a long time — MUCH longer than I expected. The reason I got the curlers was to save time getting ready in the morning (versus using a curling iron). Yup…
Maybe I just need more practice. 🙂
Friday plans?
If I get anything done this weekend, I hope it involves getting a Christmas tree. Are you getting one this year?
And hopefully I can squeeze in a trip to Sephora…
What are you doing this weekend? Anything that involves makeup?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

That’s a pretty volume! I have the hardest time with the curlers’ clip as it leaves a dent.
Karen says
I got some dents, too. I think I might try the U-shaped brass-thingys (I’m sure that’s not the technical term, LOL!) that came with the set next time. 🙂
Perhaps those will keep the dents away!
Are you having a good night so far?

I bought hot rollers a couple of weeks ago for the exact same reason. I don’t know why, but I remember rocking hot rollers a few years ago and the whole process used to take 15 minutes tops. Now, it takes over half an hour and I get an unintentional mexifro (that’s a Mexican fro, ya’ll) for my efforts. Is it just me or are hot rollers supposed to take less time than a curling iron?

Cute hair….I may borrow your new “do” when I go to get my hair cut!
I’ve worked 17hours of overtime since Monday……and I’ve got SIX more scheduled this Sunday, so tomorrows schedule is SLEEP (after a quick trip to the post office). I might try to squeeze a run to MAC sometime this weekend….you have created a MONSTER!!
We have an artificial tree, so it’s going up on Monday (courtesy of the ‘hubster!….he sets it up & I decorate it!).
I’ve still got Xmas shopping to do….gotta still get gifts for my Mom, my youngest nephew, my sister & brother-in-law, and I still have more stuff for hubby to get (I’m on the fence with either a PS3 system or a new computer……decisions-decisions…….)

The same thing happened to me! I looked like a deranged Little Bo Peep until the curls succumbed to gravity. I love your end result though!

I call that style my crazy concert hair! All sorts of volume and all kinds of wild. My last experiment in hair involved curling iron AND a three barrel waver! Was totally AWESOME!! Took foreva, but it was worth the pictures. =)
Rebecca says
LOL, you look so eighties at first! But the curls came out really cute once they had relaxed… certainly better than any of my forays into the crazy world of curlers. I swear, I can not figure those things out! I think you look the best with the claw clip – you’ve got the whole messy but sexy thing down to a T, girl!
This weekend I’ve got nothing but work… five people got fired last week for stealing, so they’re making everybody work extra to fill in for them o_o

Kate & Zena says
Ha ha ha ha, lol. That is exactly why I don’t use rollers. I get icky horizontal side volume but zero curl (natural pin-straight hair = curling tool nemesis). My mom used to torture me with the 90s stick hot roller thingies (the ones that are rubbery and straight so you can curl the hair and then you twist it to secure) to get my hair to curl for an hour. It used to take her over an hour JUST to get them into my hair because I’d run off after two or three and she’d have to catch me, sit met back down and continue.
Tabs looks like he wants to kill the rollers! Zena is terrified of my hair dryer. She can’t stand the noise even though it’s a very quiet ionic hair dryer!
My tree has been up since Black Friday. It’s tradition in my family to put all the Christmas stuff up the day after Thanksgiving and it stays up until the day after January 6 (Epiphany day). We said screw it with outdoor lights and stuff though.
In fact, the only real Christmacy things we have up is the Willow Tree Nativity set, the many snowmen trinkets (and MORE angel trinkets. Why is my mom obsessed with angels?), the tree candlebra, stockings, stocking holders and the Christmas tree (a new one, no less!). The fake tree garland wasn’t taken out and Gabriel aka Gabby the Angel (it’s an angel with wings that change colors when it’s plugged in) is on vacation until next December.
Zena isn’t too fond of Gabby as she steals Zena’s toybox area. Gabby is also taller than Zena so she seems to always be reprimanding her in Zena’s POV. It doesn’t help that Zena has to change her prancing greeting routine to incorporate Gabby and the tree! Zena scoffs and snorts at Gabby everyday until she goes down to the basement when we take the stuff down and Zena makes sure she’s gone for another year because she’ll follow my dad down the stairs!
My plans? Essays. And trying to convince my dad to move us to Australia until May so Zena and I can avoid this icky 17 degree with wind chill days and 13 degree w/wind chill nights! And just think, it’s going to get COLDER. Winter has officially begun it’s brutal reign here. I’m shivering in three layers!
K'Leigh says
girl, use those pins! you get no dents and once you practice, you’ll have it down to a science. the nice thing about rollers is that you DONT have to be precise with them! so toss em in and your hair will still be lush and full!
i think you look fab!
Ashley says
I only get dents when I use hot rollers & then hideous other stuff with a regular curler! I either need more practice or a new head of hair. I would love to go to Sephora right now. I just got a $15 Gift Card from Sephora’s Beauty Insider!

This: http://www.folica.com/HAI_eLite_Tong__d1957.html is what I used to use in my hair when it was long (boy do I miss it! =( Anyway….tool is amazing and the curl just lasts for days (embarrassingly I got it to last 4 days once) Once I got it, I will never go back to curling with an iron. Honestly just invest in a good hair too and it will be amazing. I was afraid to spend that much, but it was worth every single penny. If you do end up buying it, dont forget to see if there are any coupon codes for discounts and use ebates.
Or you can always try to learn how to curl with a flat iron. i recently picked up a sedu revolution (also for folica.com) and have only used it once. it’s my second sedu (first one was too wide for my now bob a-line cut)
it might take a few tires to get a hang of twirling it to make the curl, but because it’s curved, it makes it easier to use than a using a flat iron to curl.
contact me if you have more questions on it.

Nice hair haha, your hair always looks good. It’s impossible to curl my hair. It always gets messed up lol

I wish my weekend involved something w/ makeup. No, I’m studying for 2 make-up tests and doing a project, both on Monday. All while having the flu. (It’s not fair that flu and fly can be so easily mixed up while typing quickly, because the flu is most definitely NOT fly.) Will you be posting any more looks from the Show Pony palette? 🙂

The curls look gorgeous, I so wish my hair would go like that but it never does!
We already have our tree up, I had this week off work so I figured I’d get it out of the way now. I had some fairy light trauma, but 3 sets later and we’re all set.

Cute do! I like the final result a lot and I’m sure practice will make perfect!

Hi Kajal Couture,
How exciting! WHen is the big day?
JillyB says
I think it looks great. Maybe because I wish my hair looked like that. If you’re in a rush, try combing or brushing through it when you take the curlers out, that should soften it up pretty quickly. It’s beautiful.
I went to Sephora yesterday to use a couple of coupons I got in email. Got a great deal but I need to stop buying for myself and buy Christmas gifts!
Karen says
Hi JillyB,
LOL, those coupons are why I wanted to go to Sephora. I got a $20 gift certificate that’s burning a hole in my pocket. 🙂
Thanks for the advice on the curls… I’ll try that next time I give these a go!
Glosslizard says
You are so fabulous, Karen! 🙂 I love how you’re always willing to bring us along as you carry out cosmetic experiments!
I just bought my first curling iron, and am now plunging into the shallow end of the learning curve! Eek! Yesterday I tried it out for the first time and got some gorgeous curls on the sides, but my bangs turned out wierdly straight! I’m trying to decide whether I need a smaller barrel… my current one is 1 and 1/4 inches and I’m thinking of going to a 1″ barrel. Do you have any advice for me?
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Larger barrels tend to straighten out shorter pieces of hair, like bangs. If you’re going for curly bangs then you might want a smaller barrel!
What kinda look are you going for? Big, loose curls? Cause if that’s what you want you may want to try using your iron to create bangs with a slight wave.

Looks great! It almost makes me wish I had long hair to play around with.. *sniff, sniff*
I really WANTED to get a tree this year… but as we are going to be with the hubby’s parents in a different State for the holidays, and our apartment’s so small, apparently we can’t have a tree 🙁 and I was even offered a FREE tree this year (I just started working in the forestry department at a University)! I managed to bring some branches home in hopes of making a wreath, lol. We’ll see if I can bring some Christmas cheer to our tiny apartment 🙂
Karen says
Hi Shannon,
Congrats on your new job. Sounds like it has nice perks. 🙂
Do you like it so far?
Oh, and as for Christmas trees, you could always get one of those tiny ones that fit on a desk!
Tavia says
The final result looks beautiful 🙂 I like your loose curls. Unfortunately my hair won’t resist even for 30 min, I will become straight again instantly 🙂

It’s really cute. I think that once you get some more practise it’ll go a lot faster. It’s the same with me and my sponge rollers, I can now do my entire head in smaller size rollers in fifteen minutes 🙂

Your hair looks great. I did think about getting some rollers,as i love how the models have there hair during the Victoria Secret Fashion show lol.
My son put our tree up on the 1st of december, its a big 7ft one lol,and its still not completely decorated lol.

So I stopped for a few minutes looking at Bon Jovi’s photo there. Despite the hair, I find him cute. Now on to your hair, the resulting look is cute! But yeah, that process is kinda long. Haha

omg my hair ends up like yours, but worst when I put hot rollers, so I gave up on them. It’s poofy on the side and the curls are not very nice.
