Ya know…for someone who can be surprisingly picky about the shape of a nail polish brush or the density of makeup brush bristles, I’m not super picky when it comes to hair brushes.
I do keep different ones for different tasks, though, like paddle brushes with wide-set teeth for detangling (like the Sam Villa Paddle Brush in the pic at the top) and boar’s hair brushes for those rare occasions when I feel like doing a blowout, but I’m not about to hunt down “The World’s Best Brush” if it costs an arm and a leg. Generally, as long as I can rake it through my mop without it getting tangled, it’s all good, whether it’s a drugstore brush or something fancier from a salon.
Except for the time I was gifted a $205 (!) Mason Pearson Brush, because as far as brushes go, that thing is pretty dang good. It’s like the bristles aren’t even there! They glide through my hair like Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory, and when I’m done using it, my hair looks considerably less unruly.
I don’t think I’d ever actually throw down that much moolah for any brush, though, because even the Mason Pearson isn’t that much better than the $10 brushes at Target. Well…
So, yeah. I guess you could say that I’m mildly particular about my hair brushes. 🙂
How about you?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Tatiana says
No, not particular at all. I tend to buy the travel brushes from Sephora or the drug store to put in my purse. I have a Goody brush I use to do my blow dry. Having short, really fine hair it doesn’t really matter what brush I use.
Kim says
Thanks for that. Now I’ll be thinking (in a screaming voice) “Katie is NOT a wh*re!” for the rest of the afternoon. HAHA! I love that movie. 🙂 Oh, back to brushes. I can’t say I’m super picky as long as it doesn’t tangle, poke my scalp or make my hair look like a drowned rat. I pretty much used a very wide toothed comb/pick forever. A leftover from the spiral perm days. 🙂 I recently got a Wet Brush on the rec of a friend and it’s OK. I find that all brushes make my hair frizzy, though. I like to keep my curl.

I watched that movie for the first time about a month ago and it made me laugh so hard! Stepbrothers will always be my number 1 Will Farrell movie though. Did you know he made a Lifetime movie? And that he was serious about it?!
Kim says
I’m going to disappoint you on many levels with this reply! 🙂 I’ve never seen Stepbrothers (I know!) and, no, I did NOT know that he seriously made a Lifetime movie. I did watch a cute thing he did with HBO recently, though. He played every baseball position on a bunch of teams (for charity). It was cute and funny, with some touching moments, which is how I’d describe most of his stuff. 🙂

In a way, I am. I have to find a paddle brush shaped one for my long, slightly wavy thick hair and am particular about the bristles. They can’t be metal and have to have “nubs” at the end or I feel they’re scratching at my scalp. I found this really nice one (I forgot the brand. The box is somewhere in my closet). I purchased a back up in another design. 🙂
Karen says
If you ever find the name let me know, Iris! I have a similar hair texture.
Iris says
I found my spare hairbrush! The brand is Ionika. I found it in Winners (Canada’s division of Marshall’s/TJ Maxx). I’ve been using my current one for a while and it’s held up excellently. It’s also gorgeous (a paisley/mehndi print).

I wasn’t UNTIL I tried the GHD paddle brush. Doesn’t look like anything special, but the large brush glides through my thick but fine hair without snagging and cuts my blowout time in half. Worth the $$$$!
Karen says
Hi Lily,
You’re killing me, girl! I love GHD and use several of their curling irons. They are pricey but they’re pretty much perfect. I might have to investigate that paddle brush…
Lulle says
Not really. I like a good hairbrush made of natural boar hair but I couldn’t find one for an affordable price so I just use hairbrushes from the drugstore. I want to try the Tangle Teezer though, my hair gets horribly tangled and everyone seems to agree that it’s great!
Karen says
Hi Lulle,
My hair tangles easily too, and one thing I’ve found helps is a wide-toothed comb. I got one from Sephora a while back for $8 and it’s great! Works on both wet hair and dry hair.
Lulle says
Yes! I use one in the shower after applying my conditioner and that definitely helps!

I love my Mason Pearson brush! It’s gentle on my hair and distributes products smoothly .Feels good on my scalp, a good investment for me. Also like my Tangle Teezer brush for detangling dry hair.
Kate says
I was very particular when I had long hair, as a good brush made a visible difference. Now I have a bob, and the brush doesn’t really matter anymore.
Lauren says
Not picky at all…my hair is wavy/curly, and can only comb it when it’s we’d with conditioner in it. If I knew how to blow out my hair, I would be pickier!
Rachel R. says
I’m not super picky, but my hair is really fine yet really thick, and it tangles super-easily. I tend to go with boar bristle brushes for dry hair. For wet hair, I like the paddle brushes that are made to use with wet hair. I don’t really care about brand, and I never go terribly expensive.
Agata says
No, not really. I have a few brushes, one for combing my hair after I wish it and a few different size round brushes I use for styling. Nothing fancy though.
Erin says
I have one paddle brush, a round barrel brush for when I want a sleek blowout, and I had some boar bristle ones but they have escaped!
Heather L says
Yes!!!! I hate most brushes because they snag my hair. The only brushes I can use are the ones with the plastic “beads” on the ends of the bristles.
Rebecca says
I am picky, though I don’t necessarily need it to be expensive. I have a Mason Pearson nylon/boar and it is superior to cheaper brushes, though I don’t think it’s awesome enough to justify the price tag. I also have a couple of Wet brushes, and they are amazing at detangling (better than a Tangle Teezer in my experience) and really good for using on children and others with sensitive scalps. I also like them for distributing dry shampoo becuse they are easy to wash and dry quickly. Metal brushes, especially from the drugstore, don’t work for me; they scratch my scalp and hands and get too hot with a blow-dryer. I have a $21 Marilyn boar bristle round brush that I got at Ulta like 15 years ago that is the best round brush ever; it’s starting to fall apart and I don’t know what to do because they don’t make them anymore!! Anyone know of a great non-metal large round brush?
Chelsea says
I rarely actually brush my hair, and I love my Sonia Kashuk brush, so I’m not super picky I guess!

Fun fact: Back in the day when I did a little modeling, Sam Villa worked with me & my hair twice – once at a Redken Symposium in Las Vegas in 2003 & at a Redken convention in Lake Geneva, WI in 2006. ?
Kiss & Make-up says
Oh yeah, the MP is the brush of all brushes! That said, I only use a Tangle Teezer…
Bree says
YES! I have long, fine hair that tangles and breaks easily. I can’t just use any brush or it will rip my, already shedding like crazy, hair out! The only 2 brushes I use are my tangle teaser (LOVE) or a wet brush. For a blowout I like something with natural bristles. I have a large conair paddle brush and a round hot tools brush. Gotta have a large tooth comb for my part. I use my fingers to comb conditioner through my hair in the shower. Whew! I’m high maintenance when it comes to brushes. That’s 3 or 4 to style my hair! My tangle teaser is a dessert island item tho!
