Today I started reading the new Urban Decay Book of Shadows, Vol. IV ($64), and it’s quite the page turner so far. 🙂
Urban Decay’s latest tale stars 16 eyeshadows (10 of them new) and a host of other interesting characters, like Supercurl (Full name: Supercurl Curling Mascara) and Potion (Full name: Eyeshadow Primer Potion).
I’m a sucker for science fiction, and when it’s good like this, I feel compelled to cosplay! — in a manner of speaking. I based my makeup this afternoon on the first of five tutorials in the story, the lovely “Crystallized.”
The book/palette comes with five special QR codes, which work a little like bar codes. After installing a free iPhone app to read QR codes, I held the phone’s camera up to the code. The phone scanned it and then opened a link to the video.
Cool…
Each of the tutorials features Urban Decay’s Executive Creative Director Wende Zomnir and a model, on whom Wende completes the look while describing each step in the process, including which products and brushes to use.
At the beginning of the Crystallized look video, Wende refers to the look as “beachy” and “goddess-like” (ooh-la-la!). It’s designed to be a quick look, but one that still features a pop of color, which is totally my style.
I set my phone up on the little stand built into the palette and followed along, pausing the video when I needed more time to apply something and/or blend. I pretty much followed the tutorial’s eye and lip makeup to a tee, only adding a little bronzer to my cheeks to fake a sun-kissed glow.
A breakdown of the look…
EYES
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion all over the lids and along my lower lash line
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Skimp on the brow bone
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Baked on the lids and in the crease
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Hijack along the lower lash line
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Crystal along the inner portion of my lower lash line
- Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara on the upper and lower lashes
- MAC Eyeshadow in Concrete used to fill in my brows
CHEEKS
- Urban Decay Baked Bronzer in Baked (not part of Book of Shadows, Vol. IV)
LIPS
- Urban Decay Lip Love in Stung (not part of Book of Shadows, Vol. IV)
FACE
- Chanel Mat Lumiere Soft Matte Makeup Soft Honey all over the face
- MAC Strobe Cream, also all over the face
- MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW25 beneath my eyes
- MAC Studio Careblend Powder in Light Plus, also beneath the eyes
- MAC Studio Careblend Powder in Medium Dark, also all over the face
Not a hard look at all, and I like the way it turned out. Now, I don’t know if I feel like a beachy goddess…but I sure wouldn’t mind spending time at the beach (preferably one with warm water)!
So far I’m really enjoying Book of Shadows Vol. IV (especially the tutorials). I heard it was nominated for a Nebula Award. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. New York area Urban Decay fans, if you can swing by the Sephora store in Times Square tomorrow, Saturday, August 20, the store will be hosting a six-hour sneak peek and early sale of the new Urban Decay Book of Shadows, Vol. IV, from 1-7 p.m.
The $64 palette doesn’t officially arrive until the holidays, so this would be a chance to grab it before anyone else.
P.P.S. What did you do for your makeup today?
Ling says
SIMPLY GORGEOUS! It’s a shame we don’t have Urban Decay in Australia so I can swatch this on myself.
I haven’t got an ounce of make-up on yet…but will save it for later tonight 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Ling. You Aussies guys have some great lines… Becca is one of my faves!
Imogen says
Becca is waaaaaay more expensive here (Australia) than it is in the US. It sucks! I can’t stand the brand purely for this fact.
beautylogicblog says
I’m going to that Sephora tomorrow to pick up the palette. So excited about it. You look amazing hon! hugs.
Karen says
Hi Milly,
How fun! You might run into a few other MBB readers there. 🙂
What else are you up to this weekend?
Ariel says
UD needs to stop coming out with so many cute palettes! I’m going to need to start saving for this one early 🙂
Karen says
LOL, yeah, they sure have been churning out the hits lately. Do you have any other UD palettes that you currently use and love?
Ariel says
I have the 15th anniversary, the naked pallet, and roller girl. I haven’t played with the 15th anniversary yet really, but roller girl is my favorite! The colors really make my freckles pop for some reason but thats ok! I love my ginger 🙂
Lilit - Makeup and Macaroons says
Total beachy goddess! I love the glowy look, especially Hijack in the lower lashline, I think it lifts up the look from simply being golden glowy to one with a modern edge.
Karen says
Hi Lilit,
Hijack is one of the stars of this palette. It’s such a fun teal!
What are you up to this weekend? Got any fun plans, or are you just gonna chill?
BettyS says
What did I do for makeup today? I hit the local cosmetics store and scored a Paula Dorf eyeshadow in Mystic. It’s a faded plum suede color (best I can describe it). It’s absolutely flattering, goes on like silk, and is a huge pan that should last forever. So I’ve been having fun with that.
Heidi says
It was a casual day today, so I just did my e.l.f tinted moisturizer and concealer, NYX cream blush in Natural, and for eyes I used Wet n Wild’s shadow trio in Silent Treatment. A little mascara and lip balm and I was all set to go out and run errands.
Joyce says
I can’t buy eyeshadow palette, once I start buying them, I’ll have to collect them all. (I’m neurotic like that.)
But the colors look soooo gorgeous in the pan. I love Urban Decay eyeshadows (aside from the ones with glitter) and I have them in the single pans. My favorite is Half Baked. =)
Also, I love your lower lashline. I rarely wear silvers or blues, but Hijack looks really nice and multi-dimensional in the pictures.
Jessi says
I LOVE this look, it’s seems simple, but it looks so fresh and unique. And of course you rock it like nodody’s bidnis. 😉
Michelle Miller says
wow that is a really pretty look on you! I’m very curious to try this myself – I think I will splurge on this one!
dani@callitbeauty says
LOVE the icy blue on the bottom lash line. that’s pretty much my favourite place to apply a “pop of colour.” <3
Stef Smith says
I. Need. This!!! I love it so much! I just bought the Anniversary palette, and that’s what I wore today, the light purple one. I love Urban Decay eye shadows, it’s so heavily pigmented and the colors are amazing! I’m going to pick this up as soon as it’s out! And I love the eye look you did, totally up my alley!
gio says
This is a gorgeous look! Love the pop of color on the lower lashline.
Kate & Zena says
KAREN!!!! STOP!! Stopstopstopstopstop! You have got to stop posting photos of how pretty it is! You’re making me really depressed and peeved that I’m an Epileptic and migraine sufferer. *sobs* I want it so bad, but I can’t have it!
Darn UD, making a pretty box with a laser show. Sometimes I wonder if they ever consider how much of their demographic they’re cutting out on a medical basis when they put these things that combine technology and makeup together. It certainly makes me feel left out!
Tania says
Hey – I saw this in Toronto on friday and there’s no laser show. You can connect your ipod to it and watch a tutorial but that’s up to you if you want to or not. There were no actual lasers or lights in the palette!
You too can enjoy the pretty box!
Kate & Zena says
Hi Tania,
There isn’t? Seriously???? Little ol’ Epileptic me can purchase it?
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
You have absolutely made my day. If I could hug you, I would.
Now, I totally have to choose between this or the UD 15 anniversary palette. It’s still in stock at my Ulta.
Tania says
Lol! I think that the butterflies were cut with a laser… But no laser show at all!! It’s GORGEOUS!!!
Shiribt says
What gorgeous color! Too bad it’s not available in Israel 🙁
What am I wearing today? A look using two Wet & Wild palettes – Walking on Eggshells & Silent Treatment. Love, Love, Love these palettes!
Lulle says
Lovely look but I’m not sure about this palette. The swatches I came accross online were pretty disappointing!
Chris25 says
Ooh, Karen, you look like a model here!
Nina says
Karen – your brows are gorgeous!
the look is great too – and the description is right: beachy, fun!
i used a gray Inglot color and expensive pink yesterday, w/ a very thin line of gray eyeliner on the upper lashline, mocha for my cheeks and clear gloss for my lips. it was too hot to do much of anything else.
Emma says
Gorgeous look, can’t wait to rock this palette!!
I am currently sporting a look from UD’s Naked palette today 🙂 can’t live without it!
Linda Halpern says
I love your makeup in pic above – shimmery bronze eyeshadow and teal underneath – it’s a look I am going to try myself. Love your blog!
Erin says
Okay, yeah I think I do need this. I’m gonna restrain myself and wait till the Sephora F&F sale, that’s when I got BOS III last year. 20% off makes this palette so much better!
Joy says
Hey gorgeous and looks good on you. The palette are not that so bold colors. Its so cool. Thumbs up for your blog.
béatrice says
Haha ! I first tought the Nebula award was a makeup award 🙂
