It’s been a minute since I’ve worn this much color! It felt SO good though. I was inspired by a picture I saw of model Ruby Rose on Urban Decay’s website wearing purple winged liner with matching sparkly purple lips.
So I took the idea and ran with it. I’m wearing a lot of Urban Decay in this look, including their Afterdark Eyeshadow Palette.
Products in the mix
Eyes: MAC Minted Eye Kohl (as an eyeshadow base on my lids), Urban Decay Afterdark Palette (a mix of Lounge and Fringe on my lids, Scene on the inner crease, Alter in the inner corner and Druggie smuged along the lower lash line), Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Loaded (inner part of upper and lower lash line), Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Vice (winged liner and outer part of lower lash line), MAC Technakohl Liner in Take the Plunge (water lines), Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara (lashes), MAC Brun Eyeshadow and Benefit Ready Set Brows (brows), Ardell Baby Demi Wispies (false lashes)
Cheeks: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Radiant Bronze Light (cheekbones), Tom Ford Sheer Highlighting Duo in Reflects Gilt (highlight)
Face: Urban Decay Rehab Makeup Prep Hot Springs Hydrating Gel (primer), Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer in Pecan Pie (worn as a foundation on my cheeks, around my nose and mouth, center of forehead, chin and jaw), Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum in Eclair (underneath eyes), NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder (to set my under-eye concealer), MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden (on my forehead, the sides of my nose, and around my mouth and chin)
Lips: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Vice (all over lips) and MAC Lipstick in Heroine (center of lips)
How ’bout you? What makeup did you wear today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. For the record, I don’t normally wear this much makeup on a Wednesday, but I was feeling adventurous!
P.P.S. Except for a quick walk, though, I pretty much only wore this around the house, haha.
Kirsten says
Gorgeous! That purple lip really suits you!
Karen says
Thank you, Kirsten. Are you a purple lip kind of girl? It’s rare when I wear one this intense, but I think they’re fun.
Kirsten says
I’m not really a wild-lip-color kind of girl. Most of the ones I see are too matte and one dimensional for my tastes, but you really made it pop! I may have to experiment with some highlighters or eyeshadows and see what I can come up with. I do have a UD Voodoo pencil , which might be similar to Vice… hm.
Dot says
FIERCE. You look incredible!
Karen says
Thanks, Dot. I guess I should do this type of look more often!
Hope you had a nice day. 🙂
Divina says
You look fierce! ?? Gorgeous!
Karen says
Thank you, Divina! Happy almost Friday!
Ditte K. says
I’m experimenting with my new palette that I received as an Easter egg from my boyfriend. Another neutral palette for my collection, Smashbox full exposure ??
Karen says
Hi Ditte,
Oh, I have that one! It’s very pretty. How are you liking it so far?
Ditte K. says
I am loving all the looks I can come up with – from vampy to demure, it’s great in spite of the massive fallout 🙂
Karen says
That’s the Full Exposure palette for ya. I love the flexibility of the colors and how easy they are to blend but the fallout is part of the package, sigh. You know what that palette is really great with? Bold lips. I like doing brown/beige on the lid with either a red or a hot pink lip.
Katherine T. says
Damn, you look FIERCE gurl!! Love it! I have the UD After Dark palette and an entire drawer full of purple lippies, you bet I’m going to try to recreate this look!
Karen says
Hi Katherine T.,
Oh, yay! When you do try it, please send me a pic. I’d love to see you wearing it.
By the way, have you found any good color combos for the Afterdark palette?
Katherine T. says
Oh will do! Wish I had your mad blending/smudging skills, but for UD After Dark, I’ve worn Druggie on its own (terrible name but beautiful purple color), and I’ve worn the peaches and golds together with the brown. It’s a great palette!
Karen says
That name bothers me too. Apparently there was some drama and they had to rename it and re-release it at Sephora? I remember reading about it somewhere. I’m kind of over the “edgy” references for color names, though. Give me something sweet like Stila Kitten any day of the week.
Girl… I think everyone wishes they had better blending skills. I definitely see things in this pic I would change, but eh, I figure unless in real life I’m sitting there like a statue with my eyes closed and someone’s really staring hard at me nobody will notice. LOL! I’m sure your blending/smudging skills are on point! 🙂
I’m going to try a peach/gold/brown combo next. Ash (here in the comments) mentioned that she likes that combo too. Maybe I’ll even throw some glitter in the mix, ooh la la.
Have a wonderful Friday and a spectacular weekend. I’m excited because tonight I’m going out to try a new Burmese food restaurant with a friend of mine. It’s a good excuse to bust out this palette.
LindaLibraLoca says
You look smokin’! Probably a little too much for a regular wednesday, but looking fierce is never out of place. I am not sure if I have purple lipstick, but I will see if I can do something similar. My Wednesday makeup was actually colorful, with blue eyeshadow and a soft orange lip, but very toned down to make it office appropriate.
Karen says
Love the sound of your look! Blue and orange is a fun combo.
Eesha says
Oh my goodness, you look fierce in this much make-up. Definitely different than your usual style but I love it <3
Karen says
Thanks, Eesha!
Kim says
I love this look on you! Btw, your skin looks amazing and glowy. 🙂 And I was quickly scrolling in a panic to make sure you were wearing false lashes and not that Louboutin mascara! Thank goodness. HAHA!
Karen says
I’ll only get that mascara is I temporarily lose my mind, LOL! I mean… $70. For a mascara. SO CRAZY.
Icequeen81 says
Hi Karen, Love this make up my favourite colour is purple never knew was possible to pull off it off as makeup. Looks great on you and also the hair and clothing style match perfectly in a kind a kind of futuristic Rock glam. For me is the the best makeup you have pulled off.
Karen says
Thanks, Icequeen.
It’s nice to see you again. Hope you’re doing OK. 🙂
Icequeen81 says
Thank you, I am doing much better it has been 8 months now, there is no day I don’t think about my son. It was negligence from the OB, but I keep up going. Glad you are doing fine too.
Karen says
I’m glad to hear you’re doing a little better. Hang in there. Thinking good thoughts for you!
Icequeen81 says
Thank you

BABE! ??????????????????????????????
Karen says
Aww, thanks Elisabeth! Hope you’re having a nice day so far.
Ash says
Omgggg, I LOVE THIS! I’m inspired to use this palette tomorrow! I absolutely love teal and purple together – one of my fave combos ever.
Karen says
Hi Ash!
If you do end up trying the look please send me a pic; would love to see it on you.
Also, what combos have you tried with the Afterdark palette? I want to play with it this weekend.
Ash says
Karen – Wasn’t able to take a photo because it’s still pitch black out and the lighting is horrible – lol! But I used Scene and Druggie in the crease, Alter on the inner corner and as a brow highlight, Fringe on the middle lid, and Backfire and Paralyzed on the outer corner and a bit of the crease. Also used Covet 24/7 liner. And yes, I am wearing this to work. No shame! TGIF! 😉
The thing I love most about this palette is that when you blend the shades together, they just make pretty new ones instead of becoming muddy like most palettes would. Like for example, when I blended Paralyzed on top of Backfire, it just created an intensified purple and looked gorgeous. I just love it!
My other fave look is with Alter, Supersonic, Sinful and Off Duty (more wearable), and I also love Fringe and Paralyzed together (mermaid-y!). I’m still needing to try a look using Lounge. Such a pretty colour but just haven’t figured anything out yet!
Karen says
I loooooove that you went for it with the color AND that you wore it to work. YES! What do you do? Do you work in a creative field? Right now I work from home (doing the blog) so I can wear crazy things, but back in the day when I worked in the corporate world I would wear a thin line of navy blue eyeliner on my upper lash line and people would be like, “Ooh! You’re wearing colorful makeup.” LOL! If they could see what I get into now…
I’m going to try your combo with Alter/Supersonic/ Sinful/Off Duty next. 🙂
So, for Lounge… Have you tried smudging it over a black base? Or maybe a blue black base? I bet it would look amazing.
Happy Friday!
Ash says
I’m such a colorful person (I think I maybe own three items of black clothing) so it’s only fair I should get to display that on my face sometimes. Haha. I actually love neutrals too, but once in a while I will do colours for work. And I do work in a creative field (I’m an art coordinator at a marketing firm) – plus, it’s a very small office. I usually get compliments so I’m okay doing it now. 😉 You have my dream job though!
So funny people actually commented on colourful eyeliner, haha. I guess if you didn’t grow up immersed in the beauty world like we did (I just realized how long I’ve been following you all over the Internet!), you just think those things are taboo.
I hope you post the combo if you try it! I’d love to see. 🙂
Such a good idea about Lounge! That will bring out the sheen too, I think. Thank you! Might even look pretty with a green base too…
Happy Friday, love! xx
Karen says
I think it’s wonderful to be able to express yourself through clothes and colorful makeup at work. It makes the act of having to clock in/clock out of a 9-to-5 so much more fun, right? I wish more fields outside of the creative world would just let peeps come in as crazy looking as they want. Maybe there would be less grumpiness around the coffee pot in break room, LOL!
I’ll make a note to take a pic of the look (and maybe I’ll throw in some glitter for good measure).
Have a wonderful rest of your day. Hope adventure finds you this weekend!
Tatiana says
Love the eyes! So, so, so pretty!
Karen says
Thanks, girl! It’s a little out of the box than my usual, but I like it!
Happy (almost) Friday.
Valentina Chirico says
What a powerful and striking look! I love the combination of teal and purple with Loaded and Vice Glide-Ons! The lips are stunning, even a natural make-up will grab attention with a lip colour like yours, Karen!
Have fuuuun with UD 😉
Karen says
Thanks, Valentina! Hope you had a nice day.
Savannah says
This is probably the best dramatic look you’ve ever done (you have many natural/natural glam ones I love too) but this is so bad ass! That purple lipstick is amazing on you! Gah! Love!
Karen says
Thank you, Savannah! XOXO
Aenea says
This look is just the best! It looks so good on you!
