We’re almost there. That’s it up ahead — the Monday finish line — and we’re about to cross it together. 🙂
How was your day? Good, I hope.
Mine wasn’t bad as far as Mondays go. I rode my bike for the first time in forever over my lunch break (hello, sore booty!) and had a grand old time experimenting with the new NARS Daphne eyeshadow.
Remember it from the NARS fall 2010 collection? The pretty purple girl?
NARS Daphne eyeshadow
Oh, she’s quite the charmer… If you like sheer purple matte shadows, beware; she could rock your boat. I took her out for a spin today, and now I’m smitten.
Daphne and Eye: A Monday Face of the Day
The Eyes
The first thing I did was find my flat eyeshadow brush…which turned out to be the hardest part of this look (it was hiding in a purse)! With the brush (a MAC 239), I packed several layers of Daphne on my lids, drawing the color up into the crease. Next, I swept the shimmery golden brown side from the NARS Rajasthan duo, another new product for fall, into the crease and up a bit to the brow bone (I like how the shimmer contrasts with Daphne’s matte finish).
Then, to define the whole eye and tie it all together, I lined the upper lash line with the shimmery dark blue shadow from the same duo (Rajasthan), and lined the lower lash line with Coconut Grove (another eyeshadow from the fall collection).
The Lips and Cheeks
Smokey purple eyes without coordinating cheeks and lips are like Salt without Pepa, or Keith without sweat. To make sure Daphne wouldn’t feel lonely, I brushed NARS Sin blush onto my cheeks and a mix of NARS Strawberry Fields and NARS Greek Holiday lipglosses on my lips (Question: Do you ever wear multiple lipgloss colors?).

What kind of makeup did you wear today? Whatever you did (even if you went au naturale), here’s a *virtual high five* for making it through Monday in one piece. 🙂

Karen says
How are you and the wee babe? I hope things are good!

I’ve heard the first couple of weeks are exhausting. Hang in there! Next thing you know he’ll be going to prom and you’ll be like, “Oh, I wish he was still tiny!”

Love the look! I might just need to order Daphne now.

Hi Martha,
You’ve got to give it at least a good swipe. It’s a lovely color!
How was your Monday?
AshBash says
i wore bright future, twinks, era, viva glam gaga, and on display.
Karen says
Sounds like a beautiful look, AshBash! I take it you’re a MAC fan. 🙂
AshBash says
i certainly am a mac fan! im trying to branch out 🙂 mufe and nars are def. on my radar.
Karen says
Awesome! I started off (and am still) and MAC fan, but there are lots of great things from other lines too! 🙂
dani@callitbeauty says
lovely! daphne caught my eye instantly because i LOVE purple, but I wasn’t sure if it would be all that wearable for me but it looks so beautiful on you, i may just try it out!

You can TOTALLY do this shade. Seriously! Do you have a good flat eyeshadow brush? A good one works magic with this color.

Love this look on you. Also really dig that necklace. I’ve been trying to ease into more fun jewelry and I’m thinking necklaces are the way to go. With all my hair it is hard to tell I have ears most days so I figure earrings won’t get me far.
I took a walk on the wild side (for my conservative makeup/no makeup office) and went with an olive eye. Loved it. Used my fab $3 Ulta Olive eyeshadow. It is more of an olive-nude but definitely whet my appetite for something a little bolder.
I let the fun continue when I went to pick out my new glasses. Since I mostly wear my contacts to work I figured I could have a little fun. They are tortiseshell from the front but the rims and inner part of the frames are a lovely aqua-green. They are noticeable but not GREEN. Definitely perks my face up and goes well with my green eyes. Who knows, I might start wearing them more often.
Karen says
I’m a huge necklace fan. I usually get mine on sale table at Macy’s, but you can find some great individual pieces on Etsy. For higher end stuff, I love Hovey Lee:

Your glasses sound so cute! Do you have a pic of ’em? I actually need to get new frames and am looking around for something sassy.
BTW, I’ve been meaning to tell you I made your spinach/peach/bacon salad. It was soooo yummy! Thank you again for the recipe.
Amber says
Gorgeous! I really love the teal in that duo.
I have a little L’Oreal HIP duo in purple & mauve that I seldom use and when I was packing my gym bag last night I decided I would play with it today, but some reason it just didn’t go well and I ended up with a subtle brownish purplish semi-smoky eye. My lips started the day with Clinique Black Honey and Philosophy Red Velvet gloss, but midway through the day I switched to Nymphette.
I have to pack a lot of options in my makeup bag, haha!
.-= Amber’s last blog post… Balcony scene =-.
Karen says
I’m the same way. If I don’t have at least three lipglosses in my purse I feel like the world is askew.
Clinique Black Honey is an old school love of mine. Next time you’re at the drugstore pick up Wet n’ Wild’s 666 lip pencil (yes, that’s the real name)… it looks GREAT with Black Honey!
makeup morsels says
ooh I love this combo, I wish Nars Daphne was brighter though. your hair looks really good in these pictures. I went to get my picture taken at the DMV today, so I dug up that old post you did that I’d bookmarked like ….a year and a half ago, which is when I should have gone in for my permit. thanks for that btw, it was super helpful. I used a wash of brassy gold cream shadow on my lids with a soft brown liner and some mascara. my picture turned out ok! except no one was smiling so I was like ehh…am I supposed to smile? I look a wee bit mad in my picture, but other than that it’s pretty good
.-= makeup morsels’s last blog post… Hemingway Nails- Take 2 =-.
Karen says
If people ask why you’re mad in your pic just tell them you were in a serious mood. 😉
Glad to hear the pic turned out nicely!
Michelle says
Great look on you — as usual! The purple looks a little intimidating in the pan — but looks fab on you! If you ever need an idea for a post — I would love some hints on how to take good pics (what angles, lighting, etc) for makeup. I can never seem mine to turn out — but you are such a PRO!
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Do you have a digital camera at home? Honestly the best thing you can do is to just take a ton of pictures of yourself from different angles and see what you like best.
Morgan says
Ahh Monday! I knew I wasn’t going to make it without coffee, so this morning I hit up Starbucks. The girl at the drive through asked to see my ID (with my card), and then looked at my makeup-free face. “You don’t look at all like your picture,” she said. “Maybe next time, {pause} makeup?”
Just in defiance of her, I went my WHOLE Monday without a stitch of makeup on!!!
.-= Morgan’s last blog post… When all the world is green =-.

I bet it felt liberating! 🙂
teresa says
Karen, this look makes me lust for Daphne! I need to get it now!! And Strawberry Fields too! Christine had a blog on Strawberry fields and now I MUST get it!!!!
Karen says
It’s a good color.
I posted pics of it a few weeks back:

Babybubblz says
lovely! is the nars matte shadows easily to blend out?
.-= Babybubblz’s last blog post… Wondergirls in Toronto =-.
Karen says
Hi Babybubblz,
It’s not as easy to blend as a neutral matte, but it’s a lot more user-friendly than other bright mattes I’ve used in the past. I think it’s because of its sheerness.
Paris B says
That looks beautiful on you! Its Tuesday so I’ll cheat a little and say I’m trying out Revlon’s Summer Suede – its pretty hard to get Coral to work for the eyes – any tips? 🙂
.-= Paris B’s last blog post… Why don’t you talk about BB Creams =-.
Karen says
Hi Paris,
I like to do coral on the lid and blend a warm brown into the crease. If it’s still too much coral try a warm brown on the crease, coral on the outer half of the lid and a shimmery gold on the inner half. 🙂
Kate & Zena says
I wore Cargo eyequad in Baja (filched from Mom’s makeup “stash”), Stila eye kajals in onyx (upper lashline) and sapphire (lower 1/4th of my lower waterline) and L”Oreal Waterproof Voluminous mascara on my eyes, and Stila convertible colors in Gerbera (cheeks) and Petunia (lips). I wore sunscreen and tm as well, but this is really made up for a summer day. I’m not one who fiddles with bright colors and crazy looks in summer. Too hot and too humid (welcome to Chicagoland!). Bright colors and crazy looks are for fall, winter and spring!
I like Voluminous but I hate that when I first open the tube, I get TONS of product. It’s so annoying!
In other news, Zena BRUISED me today. We were playing and she scratched my upper left arm. However, instead of her scratching the skin, it’s like they passed the skin and bruised up my arm. I have 3 angry blotchy red marks surrounded by purple! No more playing like we were until she gets her nails trimmed, that’s for sure!
Karen says
Sounds pretty, Kate! I like the Cargo quads, and Baja’s a good one,
Kate & Zena says
Why do you think I filched it? I don’t think she’s noticed yet. She’s not like me who notices the minute something is missing or moved.
Diana says
I have been eyeing that Rajasthan duo, ever since I first laid eyes on it, but since I purchased the UD Naked Palette, I think I’m going to have to try to replicate it using those! This damn make-up hobby is burning holes in my pockets!
Karen says
Yeah, but in the grand scheme of things it’s much more economical than some other hobbies! And non-addictive. Sorta. LOL!
Lindsay says
Looking gorgeous as always, Karen! I wore just dazzlelight on the lids and hipness blush on the cheeks
.-= Lindsay’s last blog post… Review- Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer =-.
Karen says
Hi Lindsay,
Hipness blush = love. Isn’t it one of the best summer shades?
Rae says
Well hey there, beautiful!
Oh, and you, Karen. [rimshot]
Kidding!! Daphne may be a show-stealer, but as always, you look completely stunning. Oh, and YES — I love mixing glosses! I keep little pots of pre-mixed lip colours in my stash, be them from glosses, lipsticks, liners and balms, or any combination thereof. Sometimes, you just can’t find exactly what you want… so you have to make it.
.-= Rae’s last blog post… Re-review- an ode to Ellis Red =-.
Karen says
Hi Rae,
That’s GENIUS! I never thought of doing that… where do you pick up your pots? The beauty supply store?
Advah says
Love the look! I’m impressed you got away with wearing bright purple eyeshadow! Makes me want to get more NARS things heheheh… 😛
I’m glad Monday’s over, it was stressful and draining. I rolled out of bed late at work, so no makeup but I’m very pleased with my hair! (it’s been very lately and the curls are getting shaggy)
And I love how Tabs is sitting in the sunny corner of the room!
Karen says
Hi Advah,
I think the sheerness of this shade makes it more wearable. Give it a try! It’s not so scary. 🙂
I hope today is less stressful for you at work! Do you have a big project or something due?
Advah says
Aaaah I might have to try it, I keep hearing about how purples work well with brown eyes.
Yep we have a private view next Friday (the second one in two weeks!) so it’s all a bit manic, trying to get everything sorted out. (I work at an art gallery 🙂 )
Karen says
That sounds really cool! What do you do for the gallery?
Advah says
Director’s PA – not my dream job, but considering the job market right now I’m lucky I get to do that in an art gallery than a bank, for instance 🙂 (I’m more into the arts than finance!) And at least I get to work with the curators and artists on new shows, can be pretty neat!
Sonja says
Oh I love (love love love) Rajahstan duo, I wish there was some way of ordering it to Croatia, and Strawberry fields too (looks amazing on you btw).
I don’t usually fall for eyes shadows, but this this duo just stole my heart. Sigh, I’ll have to find some way to get my paws on it!!
Karen says
I hope you do it! It’s such a lovely duo!
Nina says
I love the look you created using those NARS stuff … 🙂 I want that eyeshadow duo stat! 🙂
Karen says
I think you’d really like it! The blue shade is very interesting and unique — kind of a blue/black/teal/green combo. It’s very pretty applied wet.
Nina says
Oh wow @ teal and green, just exactly what the doctor ordered!
Ada says
You look awesome in those colours. I want to buy Rajastan and Daphne now! I went out on my bike for the first time in 4 years, and I’ve got a sore booty too.
Karen says
Hey Ada,
What kind of bike do you ride (mine is a mountain bike)? I actually might pop by Sports Authority today to pick up a gel seat… sore booty = no fun.
Laura says
This is such a pretty look! Love it.
Karen says
Thanks! Are you a NARS fan too, Laura?
Tiffany says
Gorgeous as always! I like how Tabs is sunning in your swatch photo. My dog does that – he finds the patch of sunshine on the floor and lays in it 🙂
My NYX nude palette arrived in the mail yesterday so I’m wearing two of the shades today! And some MAC beauty powder blush – I can’t recall the name…
Karen says
That is his designated afternoon spot. I’m thinking of putting a cat bed there, but knowing him… he’d probably rebel.
Your Nyx palette got to you fast! Are you wearing a primer? Please say yes!
Tiffany says
yah I was surprised – I paid on the 16th and they mailed it the 17th! I’m using UDPP! Also I thought the palettes would be bigger? But that’s ok for the price…
Karen says
It’s quite compact, but hey, at least you can stuff it into your makeup bag without it taking up hella room. What do you think of the lip products?
Tiffany says
That’s so true! I haven’t tried the lip stuff yet. In general I don’t care for pan lip products. I’m weird like that!
lexi says
“Keith without Sweat” – LOVE!
You are making me really excited for the NARS Fall collection. I am still on the fence with the Daphne shadow. I like purple but I don’t like it sheer. I already have to work on builiding up colors on my naturally dark lids. We’ll see, I have been known to change my mind (over and over again) at the counters!
Karen says
OMG I was bumping “Twisted” the other with NO SHAME!
If you like lots o’ pigmented then definitely check out the duos.
Anka says
This look is so cute on you 🙂 I love the eyes. I’m a similar skin tone so i want to try that lip!
Saku says
O that lip gloss is hot on you. I heard Nars lip glosses are good, so I can’t wait to someday try one.
Lexi says
wowee wow wow wow…
I got the Dolceur (sp?) blush today….as well as NARS lipstick in Cruising…my new HG MLBB lippy. I am going back for Tzarine duo – am wearing it right now and let the SA put it on me and it makes my Tabs-green peepers look AMAZING
