Face of the Day: Wonder Mint Teal Lashes

Published in: Face of the Day (FOTD)

Hi, cuties. I have tomorrow off, woot! To celebrate the end of my regular work week (not counting blog hours, of course), I went all out with my lashes today, applying four layers of Clarins Wonder Mint mascara.

The reason my hair looks all windblown here is because I’m sitting in front of a fan. It was downright volcanic in Marin County today — just absolutely unbearably hot. I tried not to venture outside the reach of the fans at home. Out of desperation, I did get up for some ice cream and to grab the TV remote, but I almost melted on my way to the kitchen.

Because the weather out here has been hotter than Christian Bale in a Speedo, I wanted to keep my look light and perspiration-proof. To maintain the emphasis on my lashes, I went with a slice of light violet on the lid.

  1. Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer over the entire eye
  2. Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow in Rock Violet on the lid and barely into the crease
  3. Shu Uemura eyeshadow in Spring Breeze all over the lid and barely into the crease
  4. Prescriptives Kohl Eye Pencil in Blue Grotto on the upper and lower waterline (Side note: This pencil is fantastic! Look out for the review in the next few days)
  5. Four coats of Clarins Wonder Mint mascara on the upper lashes only

To complete the look…

  • MAC Concrete eyeshadow

To treat my undereye circles

  • MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer in NW 25
  • Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2

  • NARS Torrid blush

Those are coral-gold tones on my cheeks and lips.

I was a little afraid this would be too much color, but I actually like how it turned out. Next time I do a look like this I’m going to to try it with an orange shade on the lid — perhaps Shu Uemura’s Sun Stream. What do you think? Too disco?

Did you have a good afternoon? What’s on the agenda for tonight?

  2. Karen says:

    Hi Bridget,

I know! Maybe I’ll go for a three-fer and wear it tomorrow with the orange.

How nice of you to make that wedding present. I’m sure your friends will cherish it (I know I would!). Are you doing crochet?

    Hi Christine,

Most places in my neck of the woods don’t usually have AC, just cause it never really gets that hot, ya know? I have thoroughly morphed into a weather wimp. I can’t believe 90 was once bearable to me.

Hope you are enjoying your break. 🙂

  11. Karen says:

    Hi Vivien,

LOL, teal mascara is *very* unusual for me, it’s true. I dunno why I was so drawn to it, but I’m glad it turned out not looking *too* crazy. You should try it! It’s fun.

  12. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

Oh yah it is… I did some non-scientific experiments with it and it passed with flying colors. 🙂 It won’t move for nuthin’!

  13. Karen says:

    Hi Melissa,

Thanks girl! I find that I get obsessed with certain colors, so I’m gonna just let this teal lash phase ride!

Yup, those earrings are white. I bought them in Spain years ago at a Random H&M. 🙂

  14. Karen says:

    Hi Terre,

Merci! 🙂 Do you ever wear bright mascara colors, too?

    Have a fantastic day!

  15. Karen says:

I’m so glad you get tomorrow off… I know you’ve been working hard lately.

I’m also glad that you are keeping up your resolution to wear brighter colors! What kinda blue? Navy? Royal? Teal? Details, girlfriend, details.

  16. Karen says:

    Thanks hon!

The teal on the waterline – *great idea*. I’ve been wanting MAC Tealo; I think Imma pick it up tomorrow and try it out.

  17. Joanna says:

I love the mascara! I’ve always been terrified to use any other color but black. I’ll try it when I’m feeling a little adventurous.

Goodness, I hate the Bay Area weather today. Way too hot.

  18. Karen says:

    Hi Joanna,

I was totally the same way, too. I’ve been wearing black mascara since the dawn of time. If you do end up getting a tube you can totally take it down a notch by just using one or two layers. It won’t look overly flashy, but you can still tell there’s a lil’ something there.

It’s still really warm up here! I got back from a run an hour ago and it was almost unbearable. One nice thing is, though, that we get to wear our summer stuff! I wore a summer dress today for the first time in months.

    How’s your day been?

  19. Joanna says:

I’m thinking about picking a tube up soon. It would be a great summer look 🙂 My day has been great so far. The only downside to this whole summer thing is the fact that I have to wear such dark clothes to work. Boo to that! LOL

    Hi Joanna,

I hope you find it a tube. It was quite the hunt for me…

Glad to hear you had a good day! I am so glad tomorrow is Friday. Why do you have to wear dark clothes to work? Do you work for MAC?

  21. lindsay says:

love the look, and love that second picture of you, so modelesque, reminds me of america’s next top model!

    Hi Karen

I like this look. It is so cheery and it has just brighten my day. I removed the chip of tooth this Friday afternoon. I could not put on any makeup for the surgery. It was intimidating at first, looking pale lipped and all, but heck! I’m so glad the chip is out!

  27. Karen B says:

    Hi Karen!

Just got back from my trip to the Antwerp MAC store. It’s a tad small, but the MA’s are superfriendly. Caroline (the MA that helped me) was very nice and giving me advice without pushing. Are you curious as to what I got? My first MAC haul 🙂

And I didn’t go over my budget, under it even. I’m very proud of myself. I did forget to get cream colour base but I’ll get that next time.

    So, time for the haul:
    – 224 and 242 brushes
    – Sheertone blush in Peaches (was going to get Blushbaby first, but the MA suggested this one, we tried both of them, a cheek each and Peaches looked more natural on me)
    – Bare Study pp (I LOVE it, thanks so much for the rec)
    – Ricepaper e/s (I totally forgot which colours I was going to get… lol But I really like this one)
    – Mutiny pigment, just couldn’t resist it 🙂

Hope you have a nice day, I certainly did 🙂

    Hi Karen,

Ooh, that teal just looks fab! I love how it gives the perfect pop of color.

PS: love the blown hair pic, so glam!

  31. Amanda says:

yes, totally go for pop and use the orange shu! (you know I’ll always say use the shu, and i’m LUVIN” oranges right now)

  32. liz says:

Karen! You’ve found your bestest best angle! You look awesome in the second pic I swear to god. You should take more pics in that angle. ^_^ awesome mascara too!

  33. tricia says:

yesterday before to work i stopped by clarins counter, just to see what the color looks like in person. i was so not planning on trying it until another day when i had time, but i did over my black mascara. and i so loved it, but did not purchase cause the mua was on lunch break. yes lunch and no one else was at the clarins, shiseido, and benefit counter, so i left. when i arrived at work my boss loved it. this is so weird u are wearing these colors in this pic cause i was wearing those same colors but mac makeup. and had no idea i would end up wearing teal mascara. being that mascara dont last long, and this is a limited color, does that mean you will wear this color often? on the clarins homepage on nordstrom.com the model is pictured wearing this mascara.

  34. Parveen says:

    lovee it very cute

  35. Meaghan says:

    Hi Karen,
I dropped by Sephora yesterday and found the most fabulous colored mascaras. Urban Decay’s Big Fatty Mascara is amazing! I picked it up in Indigo and Electric Blue and it is awesome. The indigo is much more purple than it looks online and is hot! I also picked up Make Up Forever’s Aqua Eyes Bronze collection of 5 waterproof eyeliners in super colors (gold, silver, bronze, brown and black) and these things rock. They go on smooth and creamy so you can smudge them but then they dry and wont budge all day long. Its 96 degrees here today and I used the bronze pencil with the electric blue mascara and sat outside for hours, sweating bullets and wiping my face, and both products are still on. I havent been this excited about two new products since I cant remember when. Next time you are there you have to check them out!

    Hi Lindsay!

Thank you, girl. 🙂 I gotta say, that fan works wonders! 🙂

  37. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

Thanks, girl! I hope you try some brights for summer…

  38. Karen says:

    Hi Iheartmakeup,

Hey hon! So I went to the MAC Pro store to look at Tealo and it wasn’t as teal as I thought it would be, so I didn’t get it (ended up picking up Powersurge Kohl and a big ole’ box of wipes). Hmm, it could’ve also been that I couldn’t really distinguish the colors because I was in the middle of a really embarassing allergy/sneeze attack and my eyes were watering like crazy, LOL.

Do you have a favorite teal liner? I found an ancient one in my stash from Prestige but it’s pretty old so I just threw it out.

  39. Karen says:

    Hi Mariah,

LOL, thanks, girl. Aren’t the four coats teal-a-licious?

I *love* the fan too, both for its practicality and it’s glam effect. 🙂

  40. Karen says:

    Hi Rowena,

Girl, did you rock your TEAL TERROR yet?!?!

  41. Karen says:

    Hi Miss QQ,

I am so glad your chip is out, too. Even though you couldn’t put on any makeup, at least you won’t be uncomfortable and will be able to sleep at night!

BTW, random story: I once worked with a woman who always wore false lashes to work every day. She told me that she’d been wearing them every day for like, a billion years, and when she was in the hospital for surgery a few years ago she even went into her operation wearing them.

Anyhoo, I hope you are feeling better and that you’re having a good weekend so far.

  42. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.!

YAY! I am so excited for your very first MAC haul. Glad that you had a friendly MA to work with, too — that can make all the difference in the hauling experience.

And good job of staying within budget! That’s fantastic that you were able to exercise self restraint. I know it’s hard. 🙂

I’ve never tried Peaches before but I just looked it up online and it seems really pretty. Is it matte, or does it have some shimmer?

  43. Karen says:

    Hi Girl-Woman,

You’re welcome. I’m glad you like it! You should totally try it at least once. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out but I ended up really digging it.

  44. Karen says:

    Hi Steph,

Thank you! LOL, yah, I’m gonna use that fan more often, methinks.

  45. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda,

I’ll try it, ‘fo sho. Turns out I have an orange Shu lipgloss that I kinda forgot that I had so I’ll try using that along with the eyeshadow.

How have you been, lady? I feel like I haven’t talked to you in forever…

  46. Karen says:

    Hi Liz,

Thanks my dear! That picture was a total fluke but I decided to throw it in cause it looked different. I think the fan did most of the work, LOL.

  47. Karen says:

    Hi Tricia,

I am going to get a backup and just use the heck out of it this summer, I figure. I probably can’t pull that color off in the fall/winter! Yup, I saw the model picture with the mascara on the site and she looks really, really gorgeous. I am trying to embrace a bit more color and I think Clarins does it in a way that’s not too intimidating.

Did you end up getting your mascara? I hope so! Funny that we were wearing the same colors that day, yah?

  48. Karen says:

    Hi Parveen,

    Thank you! 🙂

  49. Karen says:

    Hi Meaghan,

Thanks for the heads up. I like Make Up Forever’s Pencils so I will look for that pretty collection. Stay cool, lady!

  50. Karen B says:

    Thanks Karen

I know, it was really hard but I talked to my MA about it and in the end when she put everything together we were both like: yesss! stayed in budget! I even had plenty of money to pay for my train ticket with the budget, it’s brilliant.

Peaches is really pretty. It has a bit of shimmer in it but not a lot. To me it looks like a middle ground between shimmer and matte (I’m horrible at those kind of things, sorry I can’t be of much more help) I can send you a swatch if you want? But that’ll be next week, my mum’s got the camera.

All in all I had fun and I can’t wait to go back 🙂

    Hey Karen!

I wore it yesterday to the hairdressers. With my black hair – GREAT! With my sunny blonde locks – not so great. Clash clash clash. I still love it though, and it is a great mascara on its own.

I need more help lash wise than you though! So I think I might have to apply black first then top it with some teal 😀

  54. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

That’s so sweet if you to offer sending me a swatch; no worries if you can’t. It just gives me a good excuse to go to the MAC counter and see it in person. 🙂

The swatches are one thing I don’t like about the MAC website. I’ve seen so many colors on there that don’t look anything like the colors do in real life!

  55. Karen says:

    Hi Rowena,

Girl, that’s big change! Are you full on blonde?!?!

  56. Karen says:

    Hi Always in Style,

Thank you! It’s kind of a big step for me but I like it. I hope you try the look. It’s fun. 🙂

  57. Karen B says:

True, they really don’t look the same in person. Blushbaby was actually a bit too rosey and too dark for me once I saw it in person.
But then other things like PP in bare study didnt disappoint at all 🙂
