Face of the Day: Olive Green and Purple Eye

Published in: Face of the Day (FOTD)

With Eversun Beauty Powder Blush and Strobe Kiss Tinted Lip Conditioner, MAC did not let me down. After work I spent the afternoon playing with makeup. Hey, sometimes it makes total sense to take half an hour to apply makeup instead of tackling your to-do list. Some days are like that. Check out the fruit of your girl’s lazy afternoon:

I paired Eversun and Strobe Kiss with a green and purple eye. This took a lil’ longer than my standard 10-minute makeovers. It looks subtle, but there was lots of blending and eyeliner. Time flies when you’re having fun!

To get this look I used a mix of products from a number of lines: Shu Uemura, Laura Mercier, Prescriptives and Lancome.

Lid
- MAC Layin’ Low Paint Pot
- Shu Uemura Eyeshadow #1 from the Enchanting Charisma Holiday Palette
- Prescriptives Gold Dust 75 Colorscope Eye Color (inner half of lid)

Crease
- MAC Layin’ Low Paint Pot
- MAC Soft Brown Matte Eyeshadow

Browbone
- MAC Layin’ Low Paint Pot
- Shu Uemura M Beige 800 Eyeshadow

Brows
- MAC Concrete Eyeshdaow

Lashes
- Lancome Black Definicils Pro Mascara (upper and lower)

Lower lash line
- MAC Brownborder Technakohl Eyeliner
- Shu Uemura Eyeshadow #2 from the Enchanting Charisma Holiday Palette

Upper lash line
- MAC Brownborder Technakohl Eyeliner

Undereye circles
- Dior Long-Wearing Moisturizing Concealer in 430
- Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2

Face
- Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer in Almond
- Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

Cheeks
- MAC Eversun Beauty Powder Blush

Lips
- MAC Strobe Kiss Tinted Lip Conditioner

Green eyeshadow has become my favorite shade of the moment, and I plan to pair both Eversun and Strobe Kiss with a few more greens from my stash. How do feel about green shadow? Love it? Hate it?

I did a little more this afternoon than just playing with my makeup. I made some new files…

crazy-people-file.jpg

I took pictures of these weird lemons I got for free…
weird-lemons.jpg

I also scanned a few random snaps, including this one of Jordan Knight (New Kids on the Block, circa 1994, back when he was hot) given to me by my college roommate eons ago…

If they gave gold medals for wasting time, I’d be an Olympic champion for sure.

How was your day? I hope it was productive, so I can vicariously live through you!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Love the FOTD. Green is the shizzle!

  2. PeeChee says:

I’ve always loved the olive green/purple combo. I ended up getting all the MAC powder blushes that came out….eek! At least now I have an idea what to wear eversun with. :) I didnt know which blush to use for tomorrow.

  3. Amanda P says:

I went skiing all day with a bunch of “crazy people”! I love my skier friends because they have so much energy and we had a blast just messing around and getting excited over every run. Best of all, I got to hang out with my Australian crush! When he jumps off cliffs my heart skips a beat.

I LUV green shadows; they are so fun to play with. My favorite is MAC Aquadisiac.

  4. I’d probably be a runner up in the slacker dept. Hah.

Love the look. It even looks smokey from afar!

    Hi AppleDiva,

Yay! Green 4ever! What is your favorite?

  6. Karen says:

    Hi PeeChee,

Eversun is going to look hot on you, I already know it! Do you have any of the original Beauty Powders?

  7. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda P,

Sounds like fun! I am not a snow person (low tolerance for the cold, I’m such a wimp) but your friends sound like a great group to hang with! How cute that you got to hang with your crush, too! How long have you known him? What do you like about him? Details, girl! ;)

I have never tried Aquadisic, but have heard that it’s one of those MAC cult faves. It’s now on my list of greens to scope out (along with Lucky Jade Shadestick!).

  8. Karen says:

    Hi Lynne,

Thanks, darlin’. Whatcha been up to today in the land of aloha?

  9. Clueless Cat says:

Love the look today! Definitely wanna try it out at some point…! Also, what brush did you use to do the lower lash line with?

Hope you have a more productive day tomorrow…;)

I’m lovin’ the look, especially the lower lash line (such blending skills you have)! Tres fab! I did a shiny spring look today with Perky and Family Silver! It came out really nice! Finished with a cheery pink blush (Clinique Cupid) and Strawbaby lippie and I was hot to trot!

I am such a fan of goofing off, I think it’s a crucial part of any given week! Good for you for being a spokesperson for this important activity! ;)

  11. Lilan says:

I love the olive green! So gorgeous, as usual! I have a couple of greens, but they’re not this particular shade – more bright and forest greens. But I love and I want to try it now!

My day was pretty lazy, I just worked and had dinner and drinks with my coworkers. Now I’m getting ready to pack for my long weekend in Orange County – my auntie is getting married!! :)

Hope you have some fun weekend plans, anything exciting?

Looking gorgeous as always! And I love the stalker photo, that’s awesome. I love NKOTB, I was just listening to “Step by Step”….

  13. Pia says:

My day had been well-spent. My sister was leaving for Melbourne so we spent almost the whole day eating at the restaurant, beating the horrible traffic to pick up her tailor-made dresses, trying out gazillions of clothes at my favorite shop who has 50% off sale, buying just one dress (oh the relief! I was afraid I might go back with tons of new clothes), and then catching up (again) on the Project Runway season 4 at home, wearing my new dress.

  14. Karen says:

Love the green eye look. It always takes me so much time to blend that I usually wear only one colour when going to class.
Maybe that has something to do with the fact I usually sleep late when I have to be there at 8.30 am…
Anyways, love the blog, and nice to find another Karen online :)

Aussie and me are both ski instructors at the resort. He is a children’s ski instructor and is super kind, patient, and fun. He’s one of those people that never gets angry and you wonder how it’s possible for someone to be that upbeat all the time. He is a full-time ski bum (I’m only a part-time bum- I’m in college full-time), and comes to America during Australia’s summer. That means he leaves in two weeks! Boo hoo.

    hey karen~
I’m soo lemming the mac strobe tinted lip conditoner. how’s the texture? is the color sheer and do you have any other colors?

  18. Karen says:

    Hi Clueless Cat,

Thanks! On the bottom lower lash line I used the MAC 219 pencil brush. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I bought it originally to use in the outer V and for detailed crease work, but I can’t really get it to work in either of those ways, so I only use it as a smudge brush on the lash line.

It’s Friday so I’m feeling good, and I’m excited about tackling my to-do list. Hope you’re having a good day so far!

  19. Karen says:

    Hiya Glosslizard,

Your face of the day sounds so springy and bright! I knew you’d be lovin’ on the Perky. I will have to try the combo with Family Silver…

Goofing off is integral for this girl’s creative existence, LOL! Happy Friday!

  20. Karen says:

    Hi Lilan,

How fun! Are you in the wedding? Your relatives will get a kick out of your new hairstyle!

I am working all weekend, and anticipate writing both Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully I can get the bulk finished today so I can fool around a lil’ bit on one of the days!

    Have fun at the wedding!

  21. Karen says:

    Hi Vanessa,

Step by Step is a good one… the Right Stuff is my personal fave. I got a kick out of seeing J-Knight on The Surreal Life on VH1. He certainly has filled out.

Are you all packed for your trip?

  22. Karen says:

    Hi Pia,

I totally do the same thing – wear new clothes while watching TV! I actually busted out my wedding dress last year (just to see if it still fit) and watched a few eps of “Law & Order SVU” in it, LOL.

Your days sounds like it was very productive. I will have to channel some of your productivity today!

    Happy Friday! :)

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Karen,

Nice to meet you too! I hear ya about waking up late to get to be somewhere at 8:30. That’s the story of my life! ;)

What single colors do you usually wear on your eyes? When I’m in a hurry I’ll often just use one color on the lid and blend it into the crease, or I’ll throw on a wash of a color or some MAC Paint Pot!

  24. Karen says:

    Hiya Amanda P,

Patience, kindness and positivity – Aussie sounds like a super cool guy and totally crush worthy. :) Even though he leaves in two weeks there’s always e-mail, right? The cool thing about relationships is you just never know what will happen… perhaps he’ll end up being a friend or even more, who knows? There’s a whole realm of possibilities.

Aww, I’m jealous you’re still in school! I really miss it; I guess I’m a nerd that way. What are you studying?

  25. Karen says:

    Hi BeautyTalk,

It is to a degree. The color is similar but the payoff is different – it’s like Sunbasque’s sheerer cousin.

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Laura,

It’s fantastic. The texture is slick but not sticky. It’s like the evolved version of the jar Lip Conditioners. I have two (Strobe Kiss and Strobe Currant) but am thinking of going back for more. I’ll post a review of it today, so check back! :)

  27. Karen says:

    Hi Karen!

(sounds like I have multiple-persons disorder or however you call it – lol)

Well, usually natural goldenish colours. I love my Stila eyeshadow (mostly Icon and Barefoot Contessa) and I also have this silvery eyeshadow that I used to use as a liner.

Haven’t tried MAC paint pots as there’s only a MAC store in Antwerp since last year or so. (I know, not a lot of make-up brands here in Belgium unfortunately – or they’re pricey for my student budget)

  28. Amanda says:

Ooh-I love purple and green, but have never paired them together. I usually do shades of purple, shades of green, etc. Your combo looks so lovely. I was just eyeing those strobe lippies on mac’s website, and wondering about them. I love SPF lip products for summer when I’m outside. I was thinking about both Kiss and the more pink one…can’t recall the name at the moment. I will look for your review post, yay. :-) This week has been super, super, busy with work, but today is going to be better. I’m planning a Target run at lunch then dinner with friends later. I’m bare faced at work today (gah!). I decided I needed the extra sleep….but I’m gonna do a smokey eye when I get home for our night out. :-)

  29. Glosslizard says:

Yeah, I am majorly lovin’ on the Perky! Today I was inspired by your green-eyed look, so I used it as a base with the Nars Habanera duo for a pink and green combo! Yay! Fun with makeup! :D

I’m also pretty stoked because I think a lot of the Fafi will go very well with a lot of the Heatherette! Combos galore!

  30. Glosslizard says:

Oops, hit enter by mistake… wanted to say Happy Friday to you too! :)

  31. Amanda P says:

School can definitely be a challenge sometimes, but I’m trying to enjoy it while I can! I’m studying Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. My ultimate goal is to work in southern Cali for an action sports company doing PR or marketing. All the big ones are headquartered down there (Quicksilver, Volcom, Oakley, etc.) Do you ever incorporate the skate/surf clothes into your wardrobe? Clothing cos like Roxy and Element have some pretty dang cute stuff, especially for summer.

  32. Karen says:

    Hi Karen :)

Paint Pots are great for those lazy days. They apply pretty easily and last all day. If I were to narrow down my collection to just one for the laziest days then for sure it would be Indianwood, a gold shimmer!

I have played with Stila shadows at Sephora but don’t own any! I know lots of girls that love ‘em though.

Cool that you are from Belgium! I’d like to go there for vacation someday. When is the best time to visit?

  33. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda,

FUN! I love smokey eyes for night time galavanting! Are you guys going to do anything after dinner?

El Hub is working late tonight so it may be a low key movie date night for us. Hmmm, maybe I’ll wear a smokey eye just for fun!

Kiss is awesome! I’m working on the pics right now and after I get back from my run will write up a review!

  34. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

HOT! Pink/green sounds really pretty. Hmmm, what I work with in my stash… ?

You are so stoked about Heatherette! I bet you’re counting down the days. :)

  35. Aleks says:

Hey, it’s been a while! Been dead busy and tired with studying for the finals (which will be over on Tuesday :D). Just wanted to say you look absolutely GORGEOUS! :) I love your shirt, too! It’s so springy. I have blue eyes so I’ve never really tried green eyeshadow but recently I’ve fallen in love with it, just haven’t found the perfect shade yet. Will have to try Sumptuous Olive next week when I finally get my hands on MAC.

    Have a superb weekend!

    Aleks

  36. Lilan says:

    Hi Karen!

I’m not in the wedding but I suspect that the family will have me play a very important role in the big day, ie. run errands, watch the kids, fix boutonnieres, etc. :D

I told my mom about the new ‘do.. I think she’s gonna like it!

Boo, work all weekend? At least you’ll be inside from the yucky weather I hear we’re gonna have tomorrow. I’ll be sad to miss it in 75 degree Orange County weather! ;) I hope you find some time to relax before the work week comes around again.

    Hi Amanda P,

I am totally guilty of dressing like a teenage surfer. I get mistaken for being younger all the time because of my surfer girl clothes!

Have you done any PR internships yet? It’s a good way to get stuff on your resume before you graduate. Plus, you get an insight into the culture and what it’s like on a day to day basis.

  38. Victoria says:

    Karen Grrrl,
You look awesome- that Eversun gives you that sunkissed look..
( dreaming of summer) Greens do so much for my lil brown eyes..I love them. Your combo is so fresh I will have to try this out this weekend..I am trying to stay away from those beauty powders but it’s like a magnet pullin me closer and closer to the MAC Counter.. Next week temptation grows because I am off all week- SPRING BREAK ya’ll.. This is when I like working in Higher Ed for the extra holiday… Have a great day Friday..

  39. Ruth says:

Oh I can’t wait to try this look out! I have green/goldish eyes, so olives and purples always look the best – I never thought to combine them. Now if only I had snagged that Shu Uemura Eyeshadow palette… devil! I’ll have to be resourceful and find my own…

  40. Ooh, I like the colors you used here. Great Job!

Those lemons look really wierd. The look like, umm… pumpkins. :P

  41. Glosslizard says:

    I know, I’m such a makeup geek! :)

  42. Hillary says:

Your Jordan Knight post just took me back to my NKOTB days. My friends and I used to be sooooooo in love with them (and Boyz II Men, and, sadly, Vanilla Ice, among others). :) You live in the Bay Area, so do you remember KMEL Summer Jam? I wasn’t sure if you grew up there, or moved there recently. Anyway, I remember getting to see Queen Latifah there, and I think NWA. Now I’m feeling all nostalgic….

  43. Julie says:

    How do you find Eversun?

Julie’s last blog post..Happy birthday to you. You live in the zoo!

  44. Candy says:

LOL! You’re so funny — gotta love that stalker photo of Jordan Knight!

I love green shadows. Great job (as usual), loved your blending and the way the colors fanned out, and your combo with the lower lashline.

Gotta ask this: what’s that shirt you’re wearing? I heart it!

To answer your question (to the other Karen) about the best time to visit Belgium—depends on the season you’re after…spring, summer and fall are wonderful seasons (though rain can be the enemy sometimes). Essentially, May to September are good times. Latter part of September can start to get cold. But it’s also at this time when leaves start to turn and the fall colors are just so magical.

I know because I lived there for 7 years before heading out here. :-) Go and be inspired. Antwerp really is fashion central (Hello, Dries Van Noten!).

  45. Karen says:

    Hi Aleks,

Good luck with all of your tests. Tuesday is right around the corner. It’ll be over soon, ya just gotta hold on ’till then!

Sumptuous Olive is very pretty. Are a pigment kinda girl? Also, I dunno if you guys get Rimmel there, but there’s one green eye pencil they’ve got that’s amazing called Jungle Green. Love it!

I’m up early today (it’s 8:00 am my time) to go into SF to meet a friend. I may go and try to go to a hip hop class at my old dance studio if I get around to it also while I’m in the city. When I get home I’ll probably go grab lunch and then work from home! Nothing too exciting!

Have a good one and study hard. :)

  46. Karen says:

    Hi Lilan,

Those are mad crazy important tasks! Seriously, I kid you not! :)

Hope you’re having fun at the wedding. Safe travels!

  47. Karen says:

    Hi Victoria!

WOO HOO! Spring break! Have fun relaxing (and hitting the MAC counter – you know you can’t stay away).

Can’t wait to hear how your green/purple eye turns out and what colors you use. BTW, what are you fave greens?

  48. Karen says:

    Hi Ruth,

Oh, I think that palette is still available. When I went to the Shu store a few weeks ago I saw it on display. I also saw it at the Shu counter at Nordies. You should be able to find it. It’s very pretty, and also has a third blue shadow and a blush! :) Get it, girl! You won’t regret it.

  49. Karen says:

    Hi Sofresh & Sopink,

Thanks my dear! Do you have any fave color combos?

LOL, I can’t remember the exact type of lemon it is. I go to this gelato place down the street from work where they make all the gelato on site. The owners bought these weird lemons to make gelato but they ended up not having the right sort of taste for the flavor they wanted to make, so they game me a bunch of them! I’ve been putting them in my tea. :)

  50. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

Yah, and makeup geeks RULE! And are totally welcome in this blog with open arms! :)

  51. Karen says:

    Hi Hillary,

I grew up in the Bay Area and I totally remember summer jam. My parents were strict but never let me go, boo! I still listen to KMEL, ha ha ha!

My friends and I had crushes on the same groups too. I am guilty of having a NKOTB poster on my bedroom wall. And in 9th grade I actually had a picture of Bobby Brown on my algebra folder, LOLOLOL!

I still like that Ice Ice Baby song…

  52. Karen says:

    Hi Julie,

Eversun is available at MAC counters right now! Online, too. :)

  53. Karen says:

    Hi Candy,

Isn’t that stalker photo awesome? And Jordan Knight…man I was hot for him back in the day.

Thanks for the blending complement! I’m really getting into greens. Do you have any favorites?

The shirt is from GAP! I got it on sale last week, woo hoo!

Thank you so much for the Belgium info. Were you a student there? I am in desperate need of vacation and am longing to go back to Europe. I love traveling because it makes me feel so energized and well, changed. I feel like I grow every time I take a trip. If/when I go you’ll have to tell me the good places to shop. :)

  54. Me Big Tyke is running a fever so I’m trying to keep him far away from Baby as possible. But he’s just such a loving kid and always wants to give kisses that sometimes I’ll let him kiss Baby on the foot or something far from his face, lol. But I don’t want to repeat Thanksgiving sickness. That was no fun at all.

  57. Ping. says:

i love green eyeshadow… especially the darker kind.. but i don’t have any. what irony.. haha beauty powder blush look amazing on you!

  58. Karen B says:

Just added an initial after my name so we could distinguish.

I love Stila’s shadows, they’re very longlasting and they don’t migrate. They are expensive, but a little treat to me.

I’ll try to get my hands on a MAC Paint Pot once I get to antwerp. Any colour recommandations? I’m a rather fair skintype though.

As for visiting Belgium I’d recommend spring or autumn. It’s just not as busy as in summer and winter’s usually not really nice. Do be prepared with raingear as it pours down quite often. In the end there are always tourists in Belgium (especially if you go to the touristy cities) and Bruges is, well, a must. Do drop by to say hello when you come (I live about 20mins drive from Bruges or 15 mins on train)

  59. Karen says:

    Hi Ping,

Thanks my dear! Aww, you should get yourself some green shadow! It’s a fun way to switch things up!

    Happy Sunday :)

  60. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

Thanks for the travel info. I’d love to go in the autumn to see the changing colors. There are so many places I want to visit and my list just keeps growing!

As for Paint Pots, you might like Cash Flow, a green gold with gold pearl, from the recent Fafi release. Painter. Another Fafi one to try is Perky, it’s a very pretty light pink. If you want an all purpose one that you can use with several different colors, then Bare Study is a fantastic choice, a champagne with gold and white pearl.

  61. Susanne says:

    Hi Karen,

Eversun Beauty Powder Blush looks gorgeous on you! And I love green e/s. ;)

  62. Karen says:

    Hi Susanne,

Thanks, hun! Do you have any favorite greens? I feel a need to increase my green eyeshadow stash!

  63. Susanne says:

My favourite greens are Swimming and Wondergrass by MAC. For summerlooks I combine them with yellow shades like Going Bananas or Chrome Yellow.
But I also like Humid and Juxt.

  64. Karen B says:

Oooh, I like green things (goes well with my green-grey eyes).
I’ll probably try Cash flow and Bare study. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  65. Aleks says:

    Hey K!

I wanted to reply to you earlier, but didn’t really have time as I thought every minute counted in terms of studying. Thanks for the exhortation, by the way. :) I had the last exam today (geography), which means that my 12 years of studying are finally over. I only have to wait for to get my results next month (I think) and then it’s the graduation party on May 31. Can’t wait! Till then I’ll be free as a bird. Tomorrow I’ll finally get to see MAC and hopefully will do some cool finds. I don’t have that much money to spend on this time, but even a new lipglass would do! ;) I’m hoping to find something pretty for me from the FAFI collection, provided they have something left there at the counter.. :P

To tell you the truth, I’ve never tried any pigments.. *blush* Should I? :D You know, as soon as I saw you wearing Jungle on one of your FOTDs, I felt like trying it! Yes, we do have Rimmel here, but, unfortunately, not that shade :/ Bohoo. I suppose what we get is the basics and all the pretty colors are out of the question. Oh well.

Sounds like you had a nice weekend (apart from the working part). Did you ever go to the hip hop class? :)

Enjoy your evening, I’m off to bed now!

  66. Rachel says:

Haha I love this post, the random pic of free lemons & the stalkery Jordan Knight pic. Plus of course, FOTD.
