Last Friday’s Clinique Black Tie Violets swatchfest ignited a serious makeup love affair. I’ve been wearing the eye, lip and cheek products from the new holiday collection all week long.
My favorite look so far? This violet eye, shimmery plum cheek and dark pink lip. That’s Colour Surge Eyeshadow Quad in Black Tie Violets ($25) and Brush-On Cream Liner in Violet Luxe ($15) on my peepers, Shimmering Stripes Powder Blush in Tuxedo Plums ($30) on my cheeks and Defining Liner for Lips in Pomegranate ($14) topped with High Impact Lip Color in Extreme Pink ($14) on my kisser.
I like this eye look paired with the dark pink lipstick, but I think it would also be pretty with a sheer pink or violet gloss, too.
If you’d like a tutorial, then HOLLA at yo’ girl. 🙂
What colors did you wear today? Did anybody else rock the violets?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Stephie says
Nice to see you recovered well. I did not rock the violets but I did rock a smokey eye today. I’m hearing such great things about the Tuxedo Plums blush. Maybe I’ll drop Santa a hint 😛

Karen says
Hi Stephie,
You should! 😉 It’s a lovely color. You can build it up or wear it sheer… here I applied it with a fan brush for just a hint of color.
Kajal Couture says
Purple must be in the air! I just posted a purple eye look too! I am really liking this look on you, especially with the brighter lip! You go girl!

It must be. 🙂
Tiffany says
HOLLAAAA! It’s taken me a while but I’ve realized that purples look really good on me! I think your eye look here would also look pretty with their superbalm in lilac! also, your hair looks so freakin’ pretty!!!
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
Oh yah! A creamy purple or violet would be totally yum.
It took me a long time to get on the purple train, too. What are your go-to purples?
Blovet Beauty says
wow.. u look great

Hi Blovet Beauty,
Thanks! Happy (almost) Friday!
Kypris says
I love those colours on you! And the look is so classy. I think a tutorial would be awesome… I have a few purples that I could probably make work to mimic something similar, but I have no clue where to get started…
Karen says
Hi Kypris,
I’m guessing you could totally re-create it with your stash… do you have a creamy purple gel liner? If not you could probably use pencil.
AnneMarieB says
Tutorial, pretty please!
Karen says
Hi AnneMarieB,
Sho’ nuff, girlfriend!
Jenna says
you look so pretty!!
Karen says
Hi Jenna,
Thanks! Hope you’re having a good evening so far. 🙂
Rae says
Holy CRAP, girl. You look amazing! I didn’t even roll out of bed early enough today to put on colour, much less rock a violet shadow, so my hat is off to you 😛 Like a lot of the other commenters, I would also love a tutorial for this — it’s absolutely killer!
(If you rolled out of bed with that hair, I’m shaving you bald and making a wig out of it. Not only do your eyes look fab, you totally have model-hair!)

Karen says
Hi Rae,
I wish I could roll out of bed with well behaved hair!
What have you been up to?
Solé says
Hey Karen! This look is beautiful on you! So many girls are afraid of purple but it’s surprisingly wearable, I think it’s universally flattering. I really want this palette!
Karen says
Hi Sole,
Thanks hon! I agree… purple is a girl’s BFF. It took me a long time to get comfy with it though. For years I swear I felt like Barney in the color. 🙂
How’s your week going? Doing anything fun this weekend?
adinda says
U really need to make tutorial of this FOTD!its amazing karen..really..I’m waiting 🙂

I love purples and I keep on buying them even though I have so many purple eyeshadows and lipglosses.

Looks gorgeous! I’m a big fan of the purple eye but am too timid to do much around the lower lid. Women wear pretty conservative or no makeup around here. Going to have to play with my stash. I have BB Violet Ink — looks similar to this gel liner — and Black Plum for the days I’m not feeling so sparkly. I just love this liner color on all colored eyes — really draws them out.

Your hair looks really pretty today! Damn.
I really like the combination of the purple eye and the dark pink lip. I think this has inspired me to play around a little bit with my new massive Sephora kit (you know, the ones they release with approximately 2895798327 lip glosses and eye shadows).
Karen says
Hi L,
Oh, AWESOME! How are you liking it so far? That thing kind of intimidates me with all of the color possibilities.
gio says
You look gorgeous! Purples look great on you and I love that lip color, it goes so well with the eye makeup. I’d love to see a tutorial too.

Karen says
Hi Gio,
Happy Friday! Sure thing, lady. 🙂
Sarah says
Steph B, I can totally sympathize! The typical make up look at my work is conservative or full on 90’s (I’m going to be offensive and say some historians tend to stay stuck in the past…)
I would love a tutorial for this look. I’m doing a bit of violet today (the Lorac Silver Screen pallet, cool toned colors), but no where as vivid as this. I’m definitely going to pick up the lip combo, I love a good pink!
Karen says
Hi Sarah,
Have you tried layering a creamy purple pencil or gel liner beneath the shadows? That might punch up the colors a bit.
Happy Friday!
Tavia says
Hi Karen! This one is a beautiful look. I definitely should try it because I love almost all the products from this collection and I think is the perfect way to pass from pink to another colors. You look beautiful. 🙂

Hey Karen !
You made me buy the show pony palette from urban decay.. 🙂 I love it…could you please do a tutorial/look from that , please ? pretty please ?
Karen says
Hi Jane,
Yay! Okay, I gotta dig it out. What colors have you used so far?
MariaF says
Can you do a tutorial please? I really like how this looks on you, I was thrilled without it until I saw it on you, but I really want this now! I am kind of bad at eyeliner + blending eye shadows, so please do a tutorial!
Karen says
Hi MariaF,
I used to be awful at liner and blending too… it just takes practice. I like to do it at night, while I’m watching TV. 🙂
Brinki says
I’d love a tutorial on this look! It’s very pretty.

Hi Brinki,
Sure thing! 🙂
Kim says
GOD! I’m having a serious love affair with your HAIR! It’s so long and friggin’ beautiful. I wish my hair would magically just grow out, already. It’s shoulder length-ish (when straightened) and these curls are gettin’ on my DANG nerves.
It’s at that really awkward length where some of my hair is barely wavy and some of it is straight up kinky lol… it sounds weird, but if you saw it when I first wake up, you’d know what I’m talking about!
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Oh, I totes know what you are talking about.
Are you living in ponytails right now?
CC says
I like this combo of colors. Plus, it doesn’t involve intimidating eyeshadow techniques, which I have YET to master, so I know I could use this look any day!
Karen says
Hi CC,
One great thing about Clinique shadows is that they’re pigmented, but not as heavily pigmented as lines like MAC or Urban Decay. This allows a lot of room for trial and error, especially with challenging shades like purple!
Hope you’re having a lovely Friday so far!
resham says
You have such lovely gorgeous hair? Would you mind telling what that hair cut/hair style called?
Like what did you exactly tell your hair stylist to get that cut?
.-= resham’s last blog post… THANK YOU!!! =-.
Karen says
Hi Resham,
I’m long overdue for a cut! From what I recall, last May the stylist cut long layers. I have very heavy hair, so she also removed some of the weight by thinning out some. I (hopefully) have time to go back in the next few weeks. When I get the specific names of the techniques she uses I’ll check back in with ya. 🙂
Ashley says
I just bought this collection last week! I would love the tutorial of your look 🙂
Karen says
Hi Ashley,
Nice! What’s your favorite bit of the collection so far?
DLA in OKC says
These are beautiful colors on you, Karen.
Ashley says
It’s a tie between the eyeshadow quad shadow and the purple liner! Both are pretty and easy to use! I love when you do a look with makeup that I own, because it gives me ideas of different ways to use the products 🙂
Tiffany says
I love the lilac Superbalm! For eyeshadows my fave purples are by MAC: beautiful iris and parfait amour. Also, flirty number and satin taupe are purple-ish and really pretty.
Jeri says
You look great in purple…
tabby says
Wow. You look really pretty. I love these colors on you.
The whole look is perfect…wouldn’t change a thing.
