Blueberry truffles: health food of the future?
I wish. But seriously, I’m coming down with a cold right now, and I’m pretty sure there are antioxidants in both blueberries AND chocolate, soooo…I should probably be eating way more blueberry truffles.
Here’s a look inspired by one of my sweetest loves, blueberry truffles, and I used the deliciously named Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar palette.
I got the idea for this blue and chocolate brown eye look while doing Valentine’s chocolate-themed makeup “research” at See’s Candies (read: biting into the Blueberry Truffle sample the nice lady at See’s gave me).
Incidentally, I live dangerously close to the Novato Vintage Oaks See’s Candies, and if I hit all the green lights, I can get there in three minutes.
I’m just sayin’.
I was in the early stages of choco-ecstasy (it’s a real thing!) when I saw this look clearly in my endorphin-flooded mind — shimmery blue lids, a warm matte brown crease, blue smudged along the lower lash lines, lashes loaded with mascara, and everything surrounded by a soft, smokey haze.
The first palette I thought of was the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar ($49), the brand’s new chocolate-scented spring eyeshadow palette.
Excuse me a moment while I open it and take a sniff.
Ah… 🙂
That deep, moody blue shade in the middle is called Blueberry Swirl. With its faint black undertones, I thought it’d be perfect for buffing and blending a blueberry truffle smokey eye.
I paired it with Semi-Sweet’s Peanut Butter (a warm orangey brown) in the upper crease and Puddin’ (a cooler mid-toned brown) in the lower crease. Then I loaded my lashes with $35 Better Than False Lashes Extreme mascara, also by Too Faced (side note: I like this well enough on its own, but it’s no match for my current mascara combo love, Estee Lauder’s new Little Black Primer when coupled with any good mascara).
I also tried a new brow look here…
I’ve been infatuated lately with the full, textured brows on Los Angeles makeup artist Patrick Ta’s Instagram feed (he does THE BEST BROWS), so I tried something similar with Bobbi Brown’s Natural Brow Shaper & Hair Touch Up in Brunette ($24), and while I like the fullness, I feel like my brows end up looking a little too unruly/messy.
Close to what I want, but I think I need a little more practice with the product.
Anywho, who else is hungry for chocolate? I could be back with a two-pound box in seven minutes. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Ugh…I think this bug I’m fighting is just a cold, but I’m pretty sleepy and achy. I’ve been trying to talk myself out of it, but I don’t think it’s working.
What’s your best home remedy for a cold? I’ve already tried kissing tabby tums, but nothing. Not working.

Hope you feel better! Pretty look with this fabulous palette.

This is such a pretty look! I’ve never had blueberry truffles but that sounds and looks DELICIOUS! I like the color combinations you put together for this look- I think it’s perfect for a date night (Valentine’s Day of course!).

I love the look! The last company I worked at had a discount at See’s Candy and there was one near campus. The big factory is in South San Francisco. When I have a cold it’s lots of tea and kitty cat snuggling.

Get el hubs to bring you something with zinc in it– cold ease or zicam, something like that.

Hi Karen, I am craving chocolate right now and this truffle looks so good! So does your makeup! I really like this palette and I keep going back and forth on whether I should buy it!
I am sorry you are not feeling good. I’d suggest a cup of tea with lemon and honey! Get better soon, ok?

For a cold remedy, I use a sinus rinse. There’s the bottle version where you can squirt liquid into nasal cavity. I’ve found it to be very effective.
There’s also vapor rub (Target brand is weak. Go for the real thing).
Massage it on soles of your feet before bed and put on socks.
When all else fails, I’ve tried the Alka seltzer sever sinus congestion and cough and within hours or after a nap, totally feel better.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Love the look, and yum, truffles!

The blueberry swirl looks gorgeous on you! Feel better soon, try some zinc lozenges & juice or blend lemon, lime, orange & ginger..its a great citrus blast of Vitamin C and tastes delicious

Blueberry Swirl seems to be the hands-down favorite from this palette. Perhaps because it is the only non-neutral of the bunch? Or maybe because it takes one of the most difficult colors to wear and offers the easiest shade of blue imaginable. I don’t know which it is, but I like it!
Feel better soon! My son is fighting a 2-week cough, my daughter is fighting a sinus infection, and I’m…just fighting! And chanting “I will not get sick, I will not get sick!” in any spare seconds I find in my day.

Your eye looks are always so gorge! Love it! Looks like a fun palette 🙂
For your cold, I do OTC (over-the-counter in medical speak) meds around the clock. I do Robitussin DM Max for a bad cough, and NyQuil for a few nights. I only do nasal spray when I’m really congested (I like Vicks nasal spray). If you take Tylenol, stick to what is recommended (no more frequency than every 8 hours). Keep up the fluids and keep eating, even if you don’t want to. Feel better soon!

Hey, Karen,
OJ, rest, zinc, more chocolate (dark), add more OJ.
I had a nice 4-hour power outage today. Try putting Bobbi Brown Beige lipstick on by flashlight!!
The blueberry look is great. Hourglass Prism came today and that smokey blue-gray shade is close. Love this palette!!
The BB brow shaper works better if you scrape some of the stuff off into the tube.
Gotta go dim some candles. The power’s back on.
Karen says
You are a trooper, Debra! *virtual fist bump* for getting your lipstick on via candlelight!
I’m so happy you were able to get a hold of Prism. You will have fun layering it and smoking it out! The blue looks amazing on top of the black shade. ENJOY!
And thank you for the tip on the eye brow product. Will give that a go ASAP.

I just adore this look! Makes me want this palette even more lol. Blueberry Swirl is such a beautiful shadow!

Lovely look! That blue shade is the one that appealed to me the most. I don’t have much to add that others haven’t already mentioned re: how to fight a cold, but I do hope you feel better. At least you look good sick (hope my warped humor doesn’t offend you!)
Karen says
Hi Kwmechelle,
LOL! It totally doesn’t. 🙂 Thank you for the well wishes. I still feel kinda blah today but hopefully tomorrow will be better.
I hope that you’ve been having a nice week so far and that you’ve been having fun with your makeup. Right now I don’t have much going on other than a bit of contour… I’m playing with a couple contour palettes because obviously the most logical thing to do when you’re under the weather is work on your contour. lol
Sylvia says
OMG SERIOUSLY? I am trying out this look TOMORROW! I love how you made the blue so wearable!!!!!!
Karen says
Hi Sylvia,
How did the look turn out?
CJ says
I want to eat that palette every time I open it – it smells amazing. I love your eye look!
I try to burn colds out of my body by drinking a ridiculous amount of White Pomegranate Tea from Trader Joe’s. I also enjoy overdosing on Emergen-C. Probably doesn’t affect how long I’m sick but at least I feel like I’m doing something.
Karen says
Hi CJ,
I also overdose on Emergen-C! Which flavor is your favorite? I’m a raspberry kind of girl.
CJ says
I really like Pink Lemonade but old-school Super Orange is good too! I mix it with enough super cold water to dissolve it and take it like a shot. I like the extra tartness of having it really concentrated. Loved your pic of Tabs taking care of you on Instagram today! Feel better!
Kiss & Make-up says
Great, I am now about to go on a serious chocolate binge and it is ALL! YOUR! FAULT!
😉
Love the look, so pretty. I hope you feel better soon, Karen.
Karen says
Haha! You know you love it! While you are binging please save the caramels for me. THANK YOU!
Kim says
I really like this look and, honestly, I didn’t notice your eyebrows being a little unruly until you mentioned it. Even so, I think they draw more attention to your eyes and make the whole look more dramatic, if that makes sense. 🙂 Also, love the shirt/top!
I hate to say this but my #1 way to fight off a cold or any sickness is to work out. Treadmill or treadclimb – as much as I hate it at the time because it’s hard to breathe and I’m just so achy and sleepy – tends to nip any sickness in the bud. Sometimes I can’t help but opt for a blanket and sleep, but that never works for me. 🙁 My friend swears by Emergen-C.
Karen says
Hi Kim,
I’ve heard that before — how just before you are about to get sick, sometimes getting in a kick-ass workout helps. I wonder why that is, hmm!
Anywho, I’m with your friend. I slam Emergen-C like there is no tomorrow, lol.
Kim says
I have to get on the Emergen-C kick. I did the workout thing last night and have felt sort of dizzy ever since. I think that’s mostly some sinus congestion and carbon monoxide poisoning from my space heater at work. HAHA! Oh, and good news, the boys are now playing indoor soccer (first game tonight). It’s only once a week but, since we already have hockey 4 days per week, I’m running low on workout time! At least indoor soccer is warmer. HAHA!
Fran says
Beautiful look! I love the blue in this palette, but the palette as a whole is just too warm for me to get much use out of it, much as I love Too Faced.
For colds, I start one of the homeopathic zinc lozenge remedies (usually the store brand from Target, kept on hand at all times) as soon as I start wondering if a cold’s coming on or if I might be allergic to something in my environs. Since I started doing that, I haven’t had a full-blown cold, just low-grade cold symptoms. For a stuffy nose I like to put a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil on a tissue or my pillow and sniff. Other than that it’s mostly drinking tea or peppermint tea and rest as much as I can. If I wasn’t a vegetarian I’d keep some homemade chicken soup in the freezer. Even vegetable broth (purchased frozen, made at our local Co-op) with extra garlic plus some egg noodles and shredded carrots is nice.
Karen says
Hi Fran,
That soup you make with the veggie broth sounds so good. I think I’ll try it; thank you for the recipe!
By the way, do you ever read food blogs? I found a lovely vegan blog the other day called Oh She Glows, and I bookmarked a ton of recipes…

OMG See’s Blueberry Truffles are the bomb!!! I got a box of their truffles as a gift last week… all gone now. The pineapple truffles are delish too. Love the look Karen! I don’t have the Too Faced palette because I have so many eyeshadow palettes as it is… but now I really wanna pick it up! Along with more truffles 😛
Sana Nurani says
I totally share your love for chocolate (I think most women do lol). Love the idea of the blue & brown, I think it totally works and you rock it! I think your brows actually look naturally thick with what you did, doesn’t even look like you penciled them in.
Try the old fashioned lemon & honey in hot water for your cold. Get better soon!!

This has just been released in Australia….$65! EEK!!
