Thank goodness for waterproof mascara, because every single time I watch this video from Dove, I get super emo.
Part of the reason — and I still can’t believe this is real — is that my 10-year wedding anniversary is coming up (first week in July!), and this short film is about a young lady named Louisa and her proposal story with her fiancé Rob.
All of us have amazing moments in our lives, and some of them seem almost impossibly unexpected and unreal. In this short film by Dove, a real woman named Louisa surprises the love of her life with a marriage proposal and puts Dove Clinical Protection Antiperspirant to the test.
When I watch it my insides turn to goo. It also brings back memories of my wedding day…
I know that everyone says this, but for reals! — it seems like it was yesterday. El Hub and I got married on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, which is where his family is from. It was at a resort on the North Shore called Turtle Bay, and I’ll never forget how nervous I was about everything going smoothly because we decided to do the planning ourselves instead of hiring a wedding planner (note to self: it was MUCH harder than I expected).
On the actual day, literally as I was getting my hair and makeup done, I was also on the phone making sure the musician got paid and that the caterers were remembering to put the toppers on the wedding cake — basically handling all of those little last-minute wedding details — and this was going on right up until the instant I put on my shoes and my veil!
I was sweatin’, but it was all worth it. I didn’t have Dove Clinical Protection Antiperspirant that day. I only discovered it later, but in hindsight, I could have used it. Dove Clinical Protection provides undeniable wetness protection and has ¼ moisturizers for softer, smoother skin.
One of my fondest favorite memories is of us in the bridal suite when I finally put on my dress. My mom, my mother-in-law and my two best friends from childhood, Cindy and Jen, were also there.
It was a beautiful Hawaii day, and we had all of the windows open in the suite to let the trade winds cool us off. The room overlooked the ocean, and I could hear the waves gently rolling on the shore.
I still recall how the fabric rustled as the dress slipped over my head, and the chatter between my moms, Jen and Cindy as they zipped, buttoned and tied sashes.
When I had the dress on, fully, I remember turning around to face the ladies, standing there in front of them, and suddenly all of us got very quiet. The only sounds were the waves crashing and the coconut trees rustling in the breeze and the myna birds chirping and all of us sniffling and getting all choked up.
I remember realizing that it didn’t really matter if the caterer remembered to wrap the shrimp in bacon, or if the florist remembered to place flower petals in the aisle. All that mattered was that I was lucky to be sharing that moment with the women in my life.
So many wonderful things happened that day, and it’ll go down in my life story as one of the best days of my life.
Of course I remember the high notes — saying “I do,” the kiss (of course!), dancing at the party with my friends and family — but I also cherish those other amazing moments, too.
One of these days, remind me to tell you the full story of how El Hub proposed. Here’s a teaser: It took place in a small dining room in a faraway land about 8,000 miles from Hawaii. I didn’t even speak the local language.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

That’s a sweet video and you look lovely Karen. I dunno, my SO is not a romantic I’m afraid.
Karen says
Isn’t that video lovely? I get nervous for her just before she pops the question!
Kellee says
You looked so beautiful on your wedding day! Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary! Ten years is a big deal! Hope you all have a wonderful time celebrating! 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Kellee! The ten years flew by so fast. 🙂 Your wedding anniversary is coming up in a few months, isn’t it?
Kellee says
I’m sure it did. The time really does fly!
Yes, my wedding anniversary is coming up in October. It’ll be 3 years! 🙂
Karen says
Wow, three years already! I still remember when you told me about how you met your sweetie online and how you were going to celebrate your second anniversary. Soon enough you’ll be at double digits, just wait!
Kellee says
Yep! It’s crazy how fast it goes! I’m looking forward to the getting to our double digits!
Karen says
It’ll be here before you know it!
Where did you guys get married?
Lulle says
Such a sweet video! My 5-year anniversary is coming up this year too, it brought back so many memories… We also had a non-traditional proposal and wedding so I can really relate to this girl!
Karen says
That’s so cool, Lulle! What was the proposal like? Details, girl!
Ruchita says
Congrats on 10 years! What a wonderful milestone and all the more special to be able to share it with Connor Claire. 🙂
Karen says
Thank you, Ruchita! Would you believe Tabs has been with us almost that whole time?
Pamela Haddad says
Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos and wonderful memories of your wedding day! Please tell us how he proposed!! Happy anniversary!! (In February, we celebrated 24 years!)
Karen says
Amazing, Pamela! Are you guys going to do anything big for your 25th? Oh, and what’s your secret to a long, happy marriage?
OK, so, El Hub proposed while we were in Europe. We both have last names which are towns in European countries, and while we were there, we wanted to visit the towns. My town was in Spain, and he proposed there! 🙂
Pamela Haddad says
That’s a sweet story and romantic! Did you know he was going to pop the question or were you surprised?
Not sure what we’ll do yet. I’d like to do a cruise but also host a blow out party for all our friends.
No secret, it’s still a work in progress. But we try to follow Bible principles, like don’t go to bed angry, treat the other person like you’d like to be treated, and that we promised before God that we’d love and respect one another. It’s hard cuz we’re from 2 different cultures and far from perfect. But we laugh together a lot, so that helps, too.
Happy anniversary!
Karen says
At the time I had some inkling it was going to happen soon, but I had NO idea it was going to happen on that particular trip. When I look back it makes sense because he would get so stressed about putting stuff in the hotel safe (no seriously he was CRAY CRAY), and it was because he had my engagement ring with him. I had no clue!
I think you should go BIG for your 25th, so I vote for the cruise! I’ve never been on a cruise but my parents have gone on one or two and they love it. It takes a lot of stress out of traveling and you can really relax!
Thank you for the great advice; I’m looking forward to hitting my 25th with El Hub. 🙂
Pamela Haddad says
That would stress me, too! Glad it all went according to plan. I think you’re right about a cruise. We need a do over. We went once and my husband got some weird flu with a high fever. He was miserable! And it was scary sitting in the room all the time watching him shiver.
Hey, for your 25th, your daughter can help you plan it!! Can you imagine she’ll be a teenager?!
Karen says
Your poor hubs! It sounds like he may have had a listeria infection? I’m no doctor but El Hub had one a few months back and it was very similar, flu-like with a fever and shivers, the poor thing.
It took me a second to do the math for Connor’s age for our 25th… UM, WOW! Connor as a teenager! I almost can’t handle it. I get super emo now when I see things like newborn clothes and shoes and I realize that she’ll never be a newborn ever again. I can’t imagine how I’ll be when she’s 16 and I see baby clothes, LOL!
Chris says
Thanks for sharing your look back at this wonderful moment. Congratulations!
Karen says
Thank you, Chris!
kwmechelle says
I mean, sniff sniff, do you want me to cry!? How beautiful was this? And you looked stunning. Absolutely stunning! And since there’s a cliff hanger, I vote that you continue this story tomorrow & tell us all about the proposal. Inquiring makeup loving minds (who may actually start using Dove deodorant from here on out) would love to know. I’ll bring Kleenex to wipe away my mascara-coated tears. ?
LindaLibraLoca says
Wow, ten years. That is amazing! We had our second anniversary in December, but as I was heavily pregnant (just like I was on our wedding day), we didn’t do much. What have you guys planned?
Eesha says
Aww.. Karen.. it made me feel nostalgic about my wedding day! God, I was so nervous that I was sweating even in cold weather!
You look so pretty and radiant Karen in your wedding day pictures, so pretty <3
Kiss & Make-up says

What a sweet story! You looked gorgeous, Karen. I can’t believe this was 10 years ago! It’s amazing the little things you remember from your wedding day. I still remember my mom adjusting my veil and the overall feeling of complete happiness I had all throughout the day. Happy 10th wedding anniversary to you and El Hub!
