Took me a while to get on board with MAC Styled in Sepia, mostly because I wore something just like it in the ’90s…and I’m 99% certain I wore it with overalls, a baby tee, a pair of knock-off Timberland boots and a button-up plaid shirt tied around my waist.
OH, GAWD.
In addition to triggering bouts of ’90s nostalgia, Styled in Sepia is also unusually smooth for a matte, so if you’ve got a flaky lip situation going on, you can still wear it without looking dodgy.
The color has an interesting grayish mauve undertone that I didn’t expect to find terribly flattering, but it grew on me when I got it on my lips.
Styled in Sepia is one of the limited edition MAC matte colors and, unfortunately, it appears to be sold out on the MAC website, but you can still find it online if you do a little digging…
I’ve seen it at belk.com, nordstrom.com and bloomingdales.com, so it’s still floating around on the Inter-Webs if you need to have it in yo’ life right meow.
A tube will set you back $16.
The Insomnia Files: Chapter 1,597
Insomnia. Bah!
You ever have trubs turning off your brain at bedtime?
Sometimes I lay down intending to go to sleep, and my body feels tired, but my mind is spinning like it’s on one of those little hamster wheels going round and round…
But last night I went to bed early, and I completely unplugged (TV, phone, Kindle — the whole kit and caboodle) an hour and a half before.
Then I spent about 30 minutes in bed reading the new issue of Better Homes & Garden (because I knew it wouldn’t be scary or action packed), and it really helped me relax. I ended up sleeping like a tabby.
A friend also recently suggested putting a few drops of lavender oil on a paper towel next to my pillow, so I tried that last night, too, with H. Gillerman’s Sleep Remedy.
Dang stuff sure smells good, and I think it did help me relax.
If you ever have trouble sleeping, I feel your pain, dawg. Would LOVE to know what helps you relax and get a restful night of sleep.

Hmmm. Not sure I could pull off Styled in Sepia but it looks great on you… I cannot believe your cat lets you embrace him! As far as sleeping aids… a glass and a half of champagne does the trick for me! Also NyQuil (I know, bad but it works)… separately though, not together!

What a cute little boy you have! And that lipstick! I love it for some reason, right now I’m so into nude-purply mauves! Ah, elusive sleep! I’m working 2 jobs right now, and am super busy and tired. Basically I just try not to overthink the fact that I need every minute of sleep I get. I know there’s no getting out of the work I have ahead of me, so there’s no point in worrying about it. Not sure if that makes sense!
Divya says
I can never wear that color! But I have a feeling it’ll make a great contour color lol! 😉

I’ve had chronic weeks-long bouts of mild insomnia for many years. Insomnia was a big reason where I once for bronchitis 8 times in 18 months. But last year, I started a habit of taking magnesium and calcium pills (at separate meals) as well as eating a banana daily for potassium. those three minerals help your body sleep efficiently. Now it’s rare that I have trouble falling/staying asleep. I also incorporated a sleep ritual that included aromatherapy. Maybd what helped me might help you, too?

Acupuncture always does the trick for me (having it in-house is a huge plus too).
I don’t think I could pull off that shade. Reminds me of that weird Chanel contouring product in lipstick form.
Camille says
I think it looks great on you! It reminds me of a mixture of Twig with a touch of L’oreal Silk…Which is an oldie but goodie that I have no less than 5 tubes of it and Brazil nut…Anywho, I’m going to give a tube of Styled in Sepia a test run!!
LindaLibraLoca says
I wore shades like that all the time. And probably a very similar outfit…
But unlike Timberland Boots, my love for those browns never faded, my current favorite is MAC “5N”, dabbed on lightly. Looking very similar.
Have you ever tried “This works: Deep Sleep Pillow Remedy”? I keep hearing great things about it. Not that I had troubles getting to sleep recently, i kind if jump on every opportunity, and even my restless mind knows he better switches off, because you never know how long it is going to last…

The 90’s called. They want their lipstick back!!!! OMG, that was a terrible look then, and I just cannot imagine why everyone is hell bent on reviving it now. Almost anyone would look better in something else, no offense to you personally Karen!!!!

Question: can we rent Tabs for a cuddling/spooning session? If so, what’s his rate?
Stephanie says
I like Sleepy Time tea about an hour before bed. I don’t know if it REALLY works, but maybe mentally it does. I know some people swear by that Neuro Sleep stuff, it’s like Vitamin Water. I think I’ve seen it around in the beverage aisle. I’ve never tried it, but it can’t hurt. I don’t usually have trouble falling asleep (sometimes I do), I wake up 3-5 times a night. I have an Up Band and it tracks sleep patterns. I always knew I didn’t sleep well, but this confirms it. I wish there was a magic cure. I’ve found that if I run in the morning, it helps me sleep better. Of course the other typical stuff like no caffeine after 2 in the afternoon. I can’t give up chocolate past 2 though.

Holy 90’s Bluntman! I too have been struggling with sleep. I think it’s partly lack of sun. It gets dark at like 3pm up here. Plus I haven’t been as active as usual.
Martha Nelson says
I really love matte lipsticks and I’m really enjoying this serie.

Well, now, the look on the face of Kitty Tabs says it all! He’s gone to the right home! I think it is very funny that he’d scoped out a few alternatives before “choosing” you. Just like a male!!
It is hard when you work in The Home to demarcate the Work space from the Sleep place. Two nights ago I had Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Minor spinning through my head till well after midnight. I’d worked out to it — bad idea. Some notes got imbedded in the head.
So the creative mind cannot be predicted. A smart doctor told e once to exercise later in the day (after 3 pm) and it would give me a good night’s sleep. Obvs, it’s been a problem.
Like the Matte Styled in Sepia on you — very natural looking!
Kristy says
Hmm, reminds me of my beloved MAC Vista (also from the 90s) which was an awesome greyed plum-taupe color.

Yep, nineties rewind and this time capsule looks good.
This Works make a lavender sleepy time pillow spray and every time I visit Mecca I try to take a whiff.
Valerie says
This color looks fabulous for you! Matte lipsticks are just great!

I still want this lipstick so badly! I’m gonna have to cave and grab all of the other colors from this collection before they disappear

Personally, I do deep breathing exercises to clear my mind before I go to sleep.

Hi,
Great colour! It reminds me a lot of the shade Hot Chocolate that MAC released sometime back as a limited edition shade. Do you own that one?
Ericca says
I bought styled in sepia because some of my darker bloggers were saying thats it a dupe for riri nude. I am glad I bought it but I want riri nud . Sorry about insomnia
Cheryene says
Styled in Sepia looks great on you. It’ll probably make me look washed out so I better stick with fuschias and bright pinks.
I usually sleep pretty good, but sometimes I wake up around 2:00 or 3:00 in the a.m. and my brain starts up and won’t stop. I’ve been taking 2 capsules of valerian from GNC. If you can get past the smell (and man do they stink!) they work great.
Fran says
I love that photo of you and young Tabs! So cute!
Renata says
I LOVE that pic with Tabs and you, he seems to be smiling in his sleep 🙂
tirurit says
I couldn’t help snorting at your description of 90s high fashion… so true!
And you are braver than me. When I originally picked my matte lippies I did not pick Styled in Sepia. A few days later, and feeling like I had let something slip through my fingers, I went back only to find out it was sold out!
And yeah, that is a cute pic ^.^
Amber says
I love Sepia on you! You really can rock that 90s shade well Karen. I’m loving the brownish-pink lip trend this fall. 🙂 I swear by liposomal melatonin liquid from my naturopath. Really helps with good quality sleep, and no zombie-ness in the morning!
I’m SO jealous tabs sleeps with you like that! My diva won’t even sit on my lap.
