SERIOUSLY. This is the current state of my potted dwarf orange tree. Look at those bad boys! The tree is just about three years old, and last April it bloomed for the first time.
Here’s what it looked like back then…
And now it looks like this!
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten an orange I plucked from a tree myself, so I’m very excited about these.
I might have my first one this weekend. 🙂
Do you have any fruit trees where you live? El Hub always talks about growing up in Hawaii and eating fruit from trees all the time. When he and his friends would be out playing, they’d snack on mangoes, guava, mandarin oranges and other fruit straight from the trees. I bet it was really neat.

I’m sooo excited for you, Karen, that you get to eat fruit that you grew yourself. There is nothing quite like it. At my home in the Midwest we have apple, pear and cherry trees along with raspberry bushes. It took awhile for everything to get established, but it is really worth it. Enjoy!

We don’t have our own fruit trees at our house (we’re in FL), but our friends have citrus trees. Best oranges of my life have come from my friends and neighbors! We’ve also had some massive lemons that last forever. We are going to plant a garden when the time comes. Since there is already an abundance of citrus, we want to grow and share berries and some basic vegetables. Enjoy your oranges!

Well bon appétit! 🙂

Nice! It’s so cool when you can go out into your yard and pick fruits or vegetables.
Guavas are one of my favorite fruits. When we went to Kauai years ago, we went to the Guava Kai Plantation. I’ve also had them in India. Unfortunately, they are hard to find here in the midwest!

YAY! I’m so excited for you that the dwarf orange is thriving and producing. Such great news! We have pear, apple and plum trees. Which reminds me that they all need pruning. 🙂

that’s so awesome! i’m happy and excited for you! 🙂
my parents have an orange tree (or two) in their backyard. i love LOVE the oranges from there and i have them send me some when they pick the tree 🙂 they also have a kalamansi plant, which is super awesome because it has fewer seeds than most kalamansi i encounter. they also send me some of those goodness when they pick. 🙂
i wish i had half of a green thumb as my parents. i had a money tree when i first moved in with The Man, but it died. 🙁 I’ll probably give it another shot.
i might start with an orange tree, also. death to scurvy!!!

That is exciting! There’s nothing like eating home grown fruits and vegetables!
My backyard has two giant crunchy persimmon tress, two yellow asian pear trees, an orange tree, a plum tree, and now a tiny fig tree gifted by my mother in law. I like having these trees, but man do I suffer from ants in the summer!

My mom buys hardly any vegetables..she grows a lot of stuff in her garden! I love the idea of picking fresh fruit, but I have had real bad luck with growing anything 🙁

This is so cool. Too cold where I live though.

Well, now I want an orange! But we don’t have any!

In India we get guava trees which are pretty common and mango trees if you happen to live in a larger area. That orange tree looks so pretty!

No orange trees here in Boston. Those look amazing!
Leah G. says
P.S. but we do have blueberries, peaches, and cherries and strawberries in my yard!

WOW – so cool! Congratulations.
We actually grew a pinapple! And, I live in NJ. LMAO
Funny story, my husband cut the top off a pinapple and actually got it to root. He had it in a decent sized pot and it started to grow. He would put it outside in the summer and bring it in in the winter. He did this religously for 9 years NINE yes. He was almost going to chuck it but felt guilty (plants do really speak to some people) and just kept doing it – low and behold that bad boy got a pinapple! It was DELICIOUS! Of course it was pretty small in comparison to the pinapples in the grocery store but it was the sweetest EVER.
We have a couple cherry trees, a plum (one died), and a fig tree. We have been trying to grow a few fruit trees in containers on our back patio. Aside from the one plum tree, everything seems to be doing well.
Karen says
OMG — nine years for a pineapple?! It would’ve broken my heart a little bit to eat it. I bet it was damn good though. 😀

Growing up, my parents had mandarins, grapefruit, lemons, apples and peaches, all in a suburban garden! I live in an apartment now that’s almost too small to grow parsley on the windowsill, but my parents still have lemons, grapefruit, and now strawberries and passionfruit… *drool*

The first time I had fruit grown in the backyard was when my dad moved to Alaska. We had raspberry bushes but werent allowed to eat them. My father was inspecting the bushes once, and discovered some were missing. Us kids blamed our dog, but I remember that look on his face that said “I know you’re lying, but I’ll let it go” lolol. Later in college, i took a botany class and learned to identify wild ginger, strawberry, and onion. So much better in the wild!

Well look at you and your green thumb! They look delicious! I live in chilly Michigan so I don’t see too many fruit trees on a regular basis. We do have quite a few apple orchards here though lol
Colleen says
We have apple trees in the backyard & when we moved here there were peaches trees. The peaches were the most delicious things. A windstorm knocked the trees down & killed them:( That is a fine looking tree you have, i bet the fruit will make you never want an orange from the grocery store again.

I would be so excited to grow my own oranges! Too cold for that here in Indiana, but I do have apple, peach, pear, persimmon and pecan trees that produce. Have planted a couple of sweet cherry trees but they aren’t doing anything yet. Also have strawberry, blackberry and raspberry bushes. Can you tell I love to grow stuff? 🙂 It’s my stress release! Cant wait to hear how your oranges turn out. They look beautiful!

Your hubby is from Hawaii?! Cool. What part? I live on Oahu 🙂 We have just started growing limes but we have an avocado tree that grows the most ginormous avo’s you have ever seen….people actually steal them from our yard….grrrrrr….
Adriana RP says
Beautiful… I loved the idea… I just got a raspberry on a vase last month… let’s see if it is going ahead!!! Fingers crossed!
Rachel P. says
You can eat apples off the tree in Michigan. Cherries too, but that’s just in theory- Traverse City is our cherry capital and I live a bit further north, where they are less in abundance. Oh, and we have lots of thriving berry bushes. We used to have a huge blackberry bush in the backyard, and that was delicious!
