I think it’s really cool that you work with pen and paper. I’m a technical writer and I still prefer pen and paper but most technical writers I know only use their computers. They’ve completely done away with pen and paper.
I do a number of different things. It really depends on how I’m feeling that day! Some days I’ll use a voice recorder, others, the computer. When I have a bit more time that’s when the pen and paper come out.
How long have you been working as a technical writer? I’ve contemplated that profession a few times. Do you like it?
Wow, a voice recorder too? I’m so freaked out by the sound of my voice recorded 🙂 I’ve been using Voxer on my iPhone to keep in touch with friends and my voice sounds so strange to me.
I like Technical Writing. I find it very fulfilling especially if I have written something that can be printed out. Looking at my work – printed – gives me a form of satisfaction that is just priceless. I know, it sounds a bit cliche 🙂 I’ve been a tech writer for 5 years now, since 2007. Before that I was studying to be a computer systems engineer. I graduated and then realized I was happier writing technical documents than I was doing digital design.
I hope you’re having good week Karen! I was naughty and went to the MAC store today as they released a few of the new collections (MAC Shop/Cook and Vera). I picked up the Color Added quad, Black Tea Sheen Supreme Gloss and Wholesome Fluidline.
Yup — I use a recording app on my iPhone. Sometimes it’s faster for me to rattle stuff off into a voice recorder, and sometimes I’m in a place where a computer isn’t nearby, like the bathroom, LOL! I get a lot of ideas in the shower, and if I don’t record them quickly the second I step out of the shower, I forget. That’s when the voice stuff REALLY comes in handy. 🙂
I’m so glad to hear you like your job! It’s such a positive thing when writers get to use their craft in a way that brings them satisfaction. 🙂 Does your family ever give you grief about not going the engineering route? I swear my mom still hopes that I’ll come to my senses and go to law school.
Hehe you’re the second person to tell me you get ideas in the shower. I don’t get any ideas in the shower. Usually I’m daydreaming.
I’ve always liked writing but I’m not very creative so factual writing is a bit easier. Yeah, job satisfaction is priceless and I’m glad I have it for now at least 🙂
I don’t think my family knows what technical writers really do. They think I write user manuals 🙂 I get a bit of grief over not wanting to move into management and become a Technical Lead or some sort. They don’t see a career path for me to continue being a writer but I do so there’s a bit of difference in expectations there. But I’ll be okay..after all I have to do what makes me happy and i don’t think management will make me happy.
