QUESTION: What do you get when you combine cats and mystery novels?
ANSWER: A friggin’ boatload of awesome.
I was at Barnes & Noble last Saturday perusing the magazines and young adult sections when I saw a familiar greenish yellow glint out of the corner of my eye.
Cat eyes.
There were probably dozens upon dozens of mystery novels with cats on their covers. I learned that there’s an entire sub-genre of mystery-solving cats. MEOW-ZA!
Did you know about this? I had no idea.
I have so many new books on my wish list now…

Sneaky Pie Brown is an awesome cat name!

Mom used to be obsessed with “The Cat Who….” series of mystery novels by Lillian Jackson Braun. Each title begins with “The Cat Who…”. There’s a ton of them, so add those to your list as well! So many books, so little time!
Jules says
I was just coming in to recommend this! The earlier books are better, though – sadly LJB got a bit… Senile in her advanced years (to the point where people suspected she was using a ghost writer).
Chelsea says
OMG! I’m already so behind on my reading though!
Erin says
I can’t tell if this is cool or utterly frightening.
Ellabeaute says
Ah, I love the concept of cozy cat mysteries.
I think Tabs would make a captivating protagonist. Better yet, you and Tabs, like Sherlock and Holmes.

pretty black cat
Kellyn says
I would unironically read these.

If I could get back into reading, I would want all of those books! I just can’t seem to get into anymore. 🙁
Kate says
Coz ladies who read cozy mysteries love cats, dontcha you know ♥☺
Kim says
How cool is that? I had no idea. Sneaky Pie Brown is a great cat name but the winning title for me is Words with Fiends (and I love that it’s a Black Cat Bookshop mystery). It’s like Kitty Noir. 🙂

I’ve actually read one of the Rita Mae Brown books, and it’s GOOD! That black cat looks just like my Zoe….
Janet S says
I love the ‘Cat Who…’ Books, and the Rita Mae & Sneaky Pie Brown ones! I’m a big cozy mystery fan, and a crazy cat lady so it was inevitable that I’d read these I guess!

So, I don’t know how into webcomics you are, but you should check out my friend’s tumblr webcomic: http://cowboysandindiekids.tumblr.com/
She’s one of my favorite people in the whole wide world, and she’s periodically posting comics about a little girl solving mysteries with her cat! Tubby Cat and Surly Girl! How could life get better?? 🙂
Natalye says
I want to check these out!
Sarah says
Yes, “The Cat Who…” series is my favorite too! Definitely worth checking out. Also Sofie Kelly’s “Magical Cat” series is really cute. I’m devouring this series at the moment.
