In a world where few of us get the sleep we need, concealers are like manna from heaven. Why? Because dark circles flat out suck. On a bad morning, I think mine make me look haggard, tired and like I fell off a truck.
Over the years, I’ve tried more dark circle concealers than I can count (it’s in the double digits!), but lately I’ve been loving one called Time Balm. It’s made by a company called theBalm, and I’ve mentioned it a couple times before. It comes in six shades (I use Medium) and blends like a dream. Plus, it doesn’t settle into my fine lines and lasts all day long.
To deal with extremely dark circles, some women layer what are called color correctors beneath their regular concealers. Many lines carry ’em. I tried one from DuWop last year called Circle Block, but I wasn’t overly impressed (it didn’t last through the day).
Which brings me to this: How do you deal with your dark circles, and what’s the best dark circle concealer you’ve tried?

great topic ! recently I purchased MAC’s select moisturecover, but it creases like there’s no tomorrow 🙁 too bad because I like how well it covers.. I think I’ll go back to YSL’s touche eclat, less coverage but a more natural, creaseless effect..

I just bought Moisturecover and it creases on me too almost immediately after application! I was so disappointed.

It took me about 2 years to try this in combination with Benefit Powderflage. I use a MAC 224 (like Pixiwoo on YT). It seems to blend it sooo much better than a concealer brush. Once set with the powder it doesn’t go in my fine lines… although I SWEAR powderflage NEVER worked until I paired it with this concealer. I LOVE this concealer. Best investment.

amazing cosmetics amazing concealer, i use shade medium beige (or something).
i have brownish dark circles that are hereditary and therefore never go away.
this concealer is creamy, buildable and covers EVERYTHING. its expensive but it’s definitely worth it for me. i set it with a touch of MSF natural using a blending brush and it lasts all day.
ak says
this is what works for me:
1) amazing cosmetic concealer in medium beige – used as a corrector – it’s the only product that actually covers up the darkness
2) makeup forever concealer (the one in the squeeze tube) #12 – this goes on top to “restore” the colour – only colour i’ve found that matches my skin and doesn’t look orange or pasty (using this alone doesn’t hide the darkness but does match my skin).
alternative – georgio armani concealer in 4 or 4.5 (both discontinued i think) are the only ones that match my skin, and i can get away with one product on certain days, but still doesn’t hide the circles completely
for reference, i am nc 44 in mac studio sculpt foundation – these are the indian/south asian dark circles i’m talking about. have tried all the mac concealers, some bobbi brown concealers and correctors, laura mercier, benefit and quite a few others.

What was the name of your conealer? As mine an hereditary too and i havent found the right one yet!

I am guilty of not using concealer everyday. I know I should make it a point to do so as I have noticed that it adds a certain glow to my face.
My vote is for Time Balm too. I love it and should make it a habit of using it everyday!
bisbee says
I have the Time Balm concealer – I agree, I like it a lot! I’ll have to find out where I stashed it!
But…I have major dark circles (of course, lately they’ve been looing better – I think it’s due to using Neutrogena Dermatologics Retinol Nx Serum and Eye Cream – which I got from QVC. I can’t use Retin-A – too harsh – I’m not willing to be red and peeling – but I think this stuff really really helps!
I’ve tried hundreds of concealers – I’m not kidding! The ones I’m rotating now (and I think they are the best) are Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener (the old formulation in the pot that is now discontinued), Philosophy eye hope anti-aging full coverage concealer stick, and my latest find, Smashbox Pro Waterproof Second Skin Concealer (this one I mix with a drop of eye cream – it then covers but disappears into my skin).
Qwerty says
E.L.F.! I was so surprised! Very skeptical at first, but I am so surprised at how well it covers up, and you only need a really light layer, too! I use the coverstick version (not the cream in a tube kind). Only for $1! Best $1 I have ever spent!

They have a wide range of colors for all skin tones, does not crease and stays put like whte on rice. I am an indian girl and I have acne scars, new red pimples and under eye circles, and it covers all. I also use a pink under eye corrector from sephora which gives me a little extra for those special days.

I love MAC Studio Sculpt Concealor. It blends right in, lasts all day, and looks like my skin minus the ugly dark circles.
Becca says
I also <3 Time Balm, but in terms of an HG concealer, I'm casting my vote for MUFE's Full Cover concealer.
It's dense enough that it covers all manner of sins, but not so opaque that it looks super fakey-fake. Once it's on, it does. not. move., so it's not even necessary to set it with powder. It's waterproof as well, which is great if you're an eye-rubber like me, or if it's allergy season. Or if you want to go swimming. Or if you're at a super-sappy wedding where the vows make you cry even though you don't know the couple personally and you're only there as someone's date. Also, it has a good shade range so there's bound to be something that suits everyone.
If it's been a really rough night, I'll actually do a layer of Full Cover followed by a bit of The Balm on the inner corners, and suddenly I'm as fresh faced to the world as a Cover Girl ad.
I don't recommend MUFE's Lift concealer though. Ironically enough, Lift is the one they market specifically for undereye circles, but it's too sheer to cover and not illuminating enough to highlight. Also it smells like sunscreen for some reason, and it's really watery. Now that I'm thinking about it, it sounds like I got a bad tube! Really though… stick with the Full Cover, if you're spending the $$ for MUFE. It's ah-mazing.
Renata says
Hi, Becca! I believe yours is not a ‘bad tube’. I have it and it’s just as you described. :/

I also get really dark circles under my eyes and find that nothing will keep my concealer in place for the full work day. I was using Benefit Boing and then switched to the Bobbi Brown corrector, which might have been my problem. I suppose I need a concealer on top of it as a corrector, right?

It’s the only concealer I’ve ever used (save for one CoverGirl one in my younger years,) and for good reason. Not only does it stay on all day, there’s actually a shade to match my pale skin (!gasp!) Plus, it’s non-shiny and silicone-free.

I use Time Balm concealer in Medium (thanks for the tip, Karen!) layered over Bobbi Brown’s color corrector in Dark Bisque and dusted with BB’s Pale Yellow powder. The color combo is perfect for my skin tone (NC 42) and the Time Balm seems to “seal in” the BB corrector. (The BB corrector and concealer combo was too creamy.)
By the way, Karen, I’ve been lurking/reading your blog for years. This is my first post! Your blog is particularly helpful for shade recommendations, as our coloring is similar.

I also really like Time Balm. I’ll probably go back to it when I run out of the Lancome Effacernes Waterproof concealer I bought for my wedding – one tiny little .52 oz tube has lasted soooo long. It took me a while to get the hang of it and realize that a tiny bit goes a long way. I just switched to using a lot of Jane Iredale makeup, so I might try out their concealer. It would be really cool if you could do a post on the actual treatments to help with dark undereye circles…there are so many options and pretty much 100% of the things I’ve tried didn’t work a bit. Thanks, love your blog!

My favorite is MAC’s Sutdio Finish Concealer. While I found Laura Mercier’s undereye concealer to be pretty good, it’s so expensive! I like the consistency of MAC’s better, and the price is great. The SPF 35 is an added bonus.

Helena Rubinstein’s magic concealer 🙂 It stands out because it stays in place, and really conceals dark circles. I use Essence 3-in-1 Concealer. It has a pink concealer, green concealer and nude concealer and its only like $3! I mainly use the pink and green and they work great! I dab the pink concealer over my dark circles (and a giant blue vein that is directly under my eye-ugh) and then apply MAC Studio Finish Concealer in a shade lighter than my skintone over it and poof! Dark circles are gone! I highly recommend the Essence concealer. So cheap and surprisignly works great. I think it’s only available at Ulta in the US.

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage here too!! I sampled all the “recommended” concealers before that one (MAC, Benefit) and this one works WAY better with my complexion. Actually, it’s perfect. Smooth, moisturising, perfect colour, doesn’t crease. I love it!

MAC Concealer Pot. It’s the best because it’s hands down the best coverage and best mixing with my skin. Doesn’t make it look cakey, its super creamy and blends amazing. I’m currently using Eve Pearl in salmon concealer Medium/Tan. The salmon undertone matches my skin very nicely but it doesn’t completely eradiate the darkness under my eyes. It is creamy and very blendable. Not good if you have oily skin, it’ll slide right off. I like it but doesn’t deserve HG status.
Diana says
Ughh…I know what you mean. I am in the process of sending mine back! I was so excited to get it and was completely and utterly disappointed. It is NOT a great concealer. Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette works better. I am still looking for my HG concealer and I have tried tons (Benefit, MAC, MUFE, etc.) Looking forward to trying some of the ones suggested.
Maren says
I love the Eve Pearl Magic Salmon concealer, I´m at my 3rd jar and I will always rebuy it. First of all I bought light, which I thought was my matching color as I am light in her foundation too, but it didn´t cover my dark, blue circles. I emailed the customer service, sent it back and upon their recommendation got the medium with my next order. It seemed way too dark in the jar, but blended in twice in a thin layer followed by the slightest dusting of MAC HD powder really diminishes my circles better than anything I´ve tried (all of MAC´s, Touche Eclat, Annayake, Lauder, Bobbi Brown, NYX, all drugstore brands etc) and stays good 8 hours, I have dry skin and all these thick concealers leave dry flakes in the area under my tearduct and the EP´s consistency is more like a light eye cream, so I wouldn´t recommend it for oilier or even normal skin.

I’m still in search of the perfect undereye concealer. I really like the coverage of Clinique All About Eyes, but before I was even halfway thru my tube it started drying out and settling into my lines horribly! Now I’m using Revlon age-defying moisturizing concealer. It’s a little more moisturizing, which is good, but the coverage isn’t as opaque as Clinique’s. I also use Benefit Ooh La-La Lift under my concealer, to help brighten that area. I wouldn’t mind trying time balm; the only thing I’ve tried from that brand is their eyeshadow, which is the best I’ve ever used, including MAC (that’s right I said it!). Thanks for the review Karen!

Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer or Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer!
I don’t have dark circles but I use these two concealers on almost everyone that sits in my chair!! Eve Pearl’s concealer is amazing because of the color. The salmon counteracts any blue/darkness and makes it completely disappear!! It’s super creamy and blendable. You have to powder it because it tends to crease a bit, but it’s amazing, especially on darker skintones! I love Amazing Cosmetics concealer because it’s full coverage but easy to work with and it lasts.

Karen,
I believe that this is the no. 1 makeup issue that most of us are concerned about.
My favorite is Stila’s Perfecting Concealer. I am voting this as my first choice for the following reasons.
1. It is highly pigmented.
2. A little goes a very long way.
3. It seems to be water based rather than creamy in texture which means that as your skins
warms up, this will not settle into the lines and creases nor will it slip and slide off of your dark circles.
4. There are 7 shades to choose from.
5. The price of $23 is not hefty considering how much is needed and how long the tube lasts.
I hope Stila does not discontinue this item!!!

I vote for NARS concealor. I have the duo in the pan, not the lipsticky looking one, but I think it’s the same thing. I like Benefit’s erase paste and boi-ing, but if I wear it more than two days in a row, my eczema flares up around my eyes. Not pretty! I know a lot of people don’t like NARS creamy texture, but on me it doesn’t crease, it’s a perfect match, and it blends nicely. Too bad it costs so darn much. I might have to try out TheBalm though!

Two products I’ve found that make great dark circle concealers:
MAC Studio Stick SPF 15 Foundation (not the concealer)

Hi Jasmine-I’m an NC 42. When I shopped for the Timebalm concealer at Sephora, I was trying to decide between Medium and Medium/Dark. This is the BEST concealer for undereye circles I have EVER USED! For one,it comes in pencil-form,so it makes it so much easier to put just enough concealer on while the liquid ones can sometimes be too much for me.Also,it doubles as an imperfection concealer,so you can’t go wrong there! It’s a cream, not too liquid and not too hard so it’s very easy on the undereye skin, which is so freaking delicate! But the BEST part is,it’s only $6.00!! I sell this,as a mark. Rep.,but I ALWAYS buy it for myself! It’s so great <3

Enough coverage to hide dark circles but not so heavy it cakes. Lasts and lasts – which really matters in the humid Aussie summer. Easily blends into existing makeup if an evening touch up is required. Tip – I though the middle shade the SA suggested was going to be too dark but she was right after all.

I, too, have permanent (genetic) dark circles under my eyes. For everyday wear I use Touch Eclat in #2 because I get a better result from deflecting light than from actually covering the dark areas. For special occasions or whenever I need a more polished look, I use Cle de Peau concealer in Ivory. Yes, yes, I know it’s outlandishly expensive, but it lasts the day or night and it blends beautifully with my Chanel Vitalumiere foundation: no settling in lines, no cakiness.

Its not for everyone as its beyond pigmented and takes some skill to use but its as natural looking as skin if used correctly. Not to mention that your circles will be GONE…like buh-bye gone….seriously! I did a vid on applying it, but never posted it for some reason, I’m weird like that. Lol.
Its a small jar that retails for $45, but will last you OVER A YEAR!!! I kid you not, it is a certified Holy Grail for me and if they ever stop making it…I may die. It was my first product I ever blogged/reviewed about as its the first product that comes to mind as the one product I can’t live without. You just have to make sure you get the right shade which can be tricky…I believe you would wear #9 or maybe #11 if your really tanned in this…that is if your curious….

My vote: Cinema secrets concealer/foundation.
A little tricky to apply but once you get it, covers like a dream. Hides my dark, purple under eyes flawlessly. I usually apply this first with my stilla concealer brush, followed by a dab-dab mothion of a damp sponge to remove the excess. Set with my Laura Mercier setting powder afterwards with my left pinky finger (I plan to purchase the Brightening powder soon when I have the moolah.:->). Lots of people gave this concealer/foundation positive reviews on makeupalley. If you have the time, check it out.:)

I’ve had dark bags under my eyes for years now and I always felt terrible when people told me I looked tired even though I was feeling fine. I’ve been trying out different eye treatments but nothing seemed to work. No tiny signs of improvement whatsoever. I went to an esthetician to take care of the sun damage on my skin and I asked him what I could do about my eyes. He gave me some sample packets of the Lady Soma Renewal Serum. He said this serum is made just for women.
I tried in that night and it made a huge difference. The bags aren’t totally gone but they’ve really minimized. I’m hoping after a week they will totally go away.

Even if it’s one of the most expensive, I would say that the best concealer for dark circles (acne scars) is Max Factor “Erace” stick. A very small amount of it in the corner of each eye, worked with a finger then brought gently under the eyes makes it lasting for the day and lasting for at least a year! No need to apply too much and the color “natural” is preferable for women that don’t go to sun.

I’ve tried a lot of high end concealers for my dark circles. They’re so dark people think I got hit in the eyes. I hate it! What I now find works good for me is using Benefit Lemon Aid on my eyes as concealer and add foundation over it when I’m applying foundation and then some Benefit Powderflage.

YSL radiant touch is AMAZING!!!It can be used as a concealer or highlighter. It has great coverage and it really brightens my under eye area!!! It’s not thick and it creates a very very natural look. Seriously.
But choosing a right color is really important.
This is the BEST concealer I have ever tried!!!

But the only downside of YSL is its expensive price in such little amount(2.5ml only).

Oh, dark circles. It’s the one thing I have to hide as they make me look old, miserable, and frumpy no matter what i’m wearing! I’ve given up on drug store concealers as every brand makes it way too sheer. I’ve tried every brand from sephora and have stuck to Amazing cosmetics line. Though not perfect, this product by far gives me the most coverage but you need to use a finishing powder over it bc it leaves a dewy finish.I’ve returned Bobbi brown, tarte, makeup forever, benefit, lancome, ysl, but planning on trying cle de peau as their concealer is constantly raved about but costs $70. Wish me luck!

Currently looking for a long wearing, highlighting undereye concealer (light to medium coverage) and I would really appreciate an update on this topic (was going to rush out and buy this Timebalm concealer, but I saw this post was made last 2010).

I have still been on the hunt for the best concealer. I intially used this lancome mouse like consistently concealer that was discontinued probably about nearly 5 years ago and then started using MAC’s concealer NW20, which the consistency of this actually worked well and didn’t crease but the colour itself did not work for my skin as I have pink & yellow undertones but my undereye circules are more purple/blue and so this just made the undereye area look grey. I switched to Benefit Erase paste in Medium I believe, the colour is perfect but the consistency of this in my opinion is CRAP. It just kind of smudged around on my undereyes and became very creased and eventually greyish looking by the end of my work day. I then purchased MUFE Concealer Extra Camoflague Concealer in either 6 or 7 and this is a great coverage as well but it is similar enough to Benefit but not as bad. It sets in my fine lines, it creases and it eventually turns greyish from me trying to make it less noticable.
I’m 30 years old and with these lines, I look ancient. I still haven’t found anything that worked as well as the lancome product I used forever ago.
I have considered getting Maybelline Fit Me, I am going to check out NARS Radient Concealer as this gets great reviews and I guess LA Girl is also meant to be great but at this point I am just ready to give up. I have spent quite a bit of money on a bunch of products that don’t seem to be working. How do people get such flawless undereyes? I feel like this ruins my entire look and I just feel self concious.
