Summer!
Almost, but not quite…
It is getting close, though, and I’ve already started using my 10-minute summer makeup routine.
It really does take 10 minutes, too. No kidding (I’ve timed it from start to finish). 🙂
In summer (and sometimes even in late fall, haha), I like my makeup lightweight. I also like the beachy, bronzed look I get with these products from MAC and NARS, all of which have saved me many times when I’ve been running late, like when I’m getting ready and hear El Hub yell from downstairs, “Babe! We need to leave NOW!”
“Uh…” (Don’t panic.) “I’ll be down in 10 minutes!”
The products in my 10-minute summer makeup routine
- NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 PA +++ — Please tell me you’ve tried this tinted moisturizer before! Two words: awesome sauce. It’s lightweight, easy to apply and covers darn near everything. I like to mix two of the shades, Cuba and St. Mortiz, for a good match to my NC42 skin tone, and apply that with my fingers.
- MAC Pro Longwear Concealer — My number one concealer love for two years running. I mix the NC42 shade with a dash of MAC Careblends Essential Oil, and pat the mixture wherever I need extra coverage on my face. Then, I do the same thing with a lighter color in NW25 (the peachy tones in NW25 help to counteract the purple) under my eyes using a MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush.
- MAC Pro Longwear Bronzer in Nude on Board — For some extra warmth and definition, I sweep this across my forehead, along my jawline and beneath the apples of my cheeks.
- NARS Madly Blush — Probably like thousands, if not millions of us, I’m mad about Madly. It’s a peachy beige with pink undertones and subtle shimmer. One of my most coveted NARS must-haves. I really do think it flatters a wide range of skin tones.
- MAC Concrete Eyeshadow — MAC Concrete Eyeshadow is like American Express (don’t leave home without it). I almost never leave the house without filling in my brows with it and almost always use the MAC 266 Small Angle Brush for the job.
- MAC Eye Kohl in Powersurge — If Goldilocks made a kohl liner, it would probably be called Powersurge (because it’s just right). I love this golden bronze liner so much that it hasn’t left my makeup bag in five years. It’s epic, I tell you! And I can’t remember the last time I took a trip without it, much less forgot it at home for a day.
- MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara — Okay, so the more I’ve used this mascara, the more I like it. It won’t clump, and the skinny brush doesn’t leave any unnecessary product on my lids. I think it’s also super easy to use. A single layer lengthens and defines while simultaneously glossing up my lashes.
- MAC Nymphette Lipglass — This last piece of this 10-minute puzzle is a worldwide superstar. A lot of the time, I grab whatever gloss is within reach (or inside my purse at any given time), but because of its uncanny flexibility (it’s like an Olympic gymnast/gloss), Nymphette is one of my old-school faves.
How about you? What makeup makes up your 10-minute summer makeup routine?

Tempted as I am to go try the NARS tinted moisturizer, I gotta remember that I adore my Missha Perfect Cover BB cream and don’t need another base! Cream or liquid blush like Topshop Neon Rose or Benefit Posietint, GOSH concealer, Laura Geller Balance n Brighten to set, and any one of the millions of lipcolors I love round it out. (The new Revlon balm-stain things have been the latest obsession, but I still wear bright and/ or matte lipsticks in the summer as well!)
Katherine G says
Wow, a lot of Nars and MAC :).
1). Garnier BB cream in Light/Medium – great in the summer, especially because it has SPF, and really moisturizes and brightens skin. I wear this over top my daily retinol (I use retinol to prevent zits since I like to work out in the heat!).
2). Nars Orgasm Blush (in Nars the Multiple Stick) – great cream multipurpose stick that works as a blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick in a pinch, and will stay on all day even in the heat.
3). Neutrogena concealer (has Micro Clear technology).
4). Physician’s Formula Mineral Pearls in Light – gives a nice glow without looking too tan while I’m pale, but when I’m tan still adds a glow to the tan.
5). Bare Minerals Mineral Veil SPF 25 – won’t rub off or sweat off, keeps makeup looking fresh and gives a slightly matte finish, and one of the few powders out there that is good and contains SPF.
6). If I’m going to do eyes I always use my UD primer in Sin. It keeps eye makeup on all day. My new fave summer cream shadow is Smashbox in Neptune. It looks like the ocean and stays put all day. I always use UD 24/7 liners in Bourbon or Perversion for most eye looks – they stay put all day too, even on the waterlines in the heat. For waterproof mascara, I use Maybelline Lash Stiletto. I like that one so far and it doesn’t flake, however it needs to be tested in a pool to really see how it does.
7). If I do lips it’s usually a balm, my current favorite is Burt’s Bees in Original Honey. I keep lip glosses in my purse (Philosophy Mimosa and Maybelline in a hot pink candy flavor) for touch-ups.
If I do eyes it’s slightly longer than 10 minutes, closer to 15, but if I don’t do anything with my eyes then the whole routine is 5 minutes, tops.

What do you use for retinol? Prescription or over the counter? I’m an acne sufferer as well, if I’m being to nosy I apologize. Awesome that you like the Garnier BB cream…I couldn’t stand it! 😛
Katherine G says
I don’t have bad acne, but I get cysts that won’t go away with the strongest benzoyl peroxide, and so far retinol (over-the-counter) has been the only thing to work on these zits within a few days to a week. I use the CVS brand of retinol (it’s called the Perfect and Correct serum I believe), and at night I use Neutrogena Deep Wrinkle Repair. I like the CVS brand and the Neutrogena brand because they are reasonably priced (around $17 to $20 each), and they last forever because you are only supposed to use a pea sized amount for your whole face. One key thing: when you use retinol during the day, you must have sun protection. Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. You should also give it 10 to 20 minutes to sink into your skin, but if you are in a time crunch you can let it sit for 5 before applying other face lotion and makeup.
I do retinol twice a day because it really does help keep the cystic acne at bay. If I skimp on my routine I will definitely get zits. Another thing that’s also helped is being on birth control (though I realize this is a very personal decision for every woman). I will get PMS zits since my birth control tapers off in the strength of the dose around “that time of the month” (or every 3 months, in my case), but the retinol twice a day has really really helped with preventing those zits and getting rid of others!

This is great! My 10-min summer makeup routine includes: Origins VitaZing, Rimmel Perfect Match Concealer in Soft Beige, ELF Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder duo, Revlon Brow Fantasy in Light Brown, Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Bourbon, Lancome Virtuose Black Carat mascara & Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Tiger Lily.
Wendy says
Now that my skin has gotten darker from cycling in the sun and my skin is drier from microdermabrasion/rentin-A, I really like my Nars tinted moisturizer in St. Moritz. I’m not so fond of it being so very yellow. Normally, I reach for Laura Mercier tinted sunscreen.
My less than 10 minute summer rush makeup for my current dry skin includes:
Tinted moisturizer (Nars or Laura Mercier)
Tarte maracuja blush and glow in candlelight
Blot and/or translucent powder to set
Any glossy lipstick, lip stain, or lip shine… Usually Dior Addict in Miami 635
Laura Mercier eye primer in Wheat
curl lashes
Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum
Dior Iconic Mascara
Anastasia brow pencil

My skin is way to light and with such pink undertones there is like nothing that i could quickly put on that ive seen. Its been a pain to find a liquid foundation to have full coverage to cover up my cheeks.

I don’t wear much make-up since I’m a nanny and it seems pointless but I did just buy a new BB cream I’m excited to try. Lioele Water Drop BB cream. If I like that, a dash of that and I’ll be ready to go! If not, the Nars tinted moisturizer may be my next plan of attack…

bobbi brown creamy concealor (under eyes)
nars stick concealor (cover redness around nose)

Right now it’s just cherry Hurraw! or rose Vaseline on my cheeks and lips; it takes a few seconds, is idiot-proof and makes me look less dead! I’m trying to get back into mascara, but the stuff I have right now is just too crispy and heavy.
musical says
Morning skin prep: Eau Roma Water or Clinique toner, Clinique moisture surge and Clarins SPF
Make-up:
1. No foundation or Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer (Light, because Medium oxidizes on me and turns orange, while Light adjusts to my skin color) or Estee Lauder’s Invisible Fluid in 4WN1 (a little dark, but gives a lovely tanned look).
2. Eye liner: Any of UD’s black/brown/blue liners or something from Smashbox’s metallic palette.
3. Mascara: Clinique Naturally Glossy or Clinique High Impact.
4. Blush: None/Chanel Rose Petale/ EL Bronze Goddess/Tarte Achiote/Smashbox Radiant
5. Lips: Either lipstick or gloss, sometimes both
Lipsticks: Chanel En vogue, Chanel Elise, Clinique Chubby Sticks in Super Strawberry and Chunky Cherry, Dior Diorkiss, Guerlain Rouge Automatique in Bal de Mai, Bobbi’s Treatment Lip Shine in Papaya
Gloss: Mac EvRev, Chanel 166 Glossimer, Tarte Achiote lipgloss
And if nothing else, i wear mascara, liner, Treatmint lip balm by Kiss my Face and put on some “Watt’s Up”.
Chelsea says
1. Holika Holika Peach Girl BB Cream for base. This stuff is amazing! Limited color selection, but the lightest shade works great on my very fair skin.
2. Cream Blush – there’s a peach cream blush built into the cap of my BB Cream, so I often use that! Otherwise I have Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pale Pink and a couple Revlon cream blushes…
3. Concealer – I’ve been using the Coastal Scents Camo Quad, but the formula seems to dry out easily. My favorite is Bobbi Brown’s Correctors.
4. Eyebrows – Femme Couture Eyebrow Pencil in Auburn (a nice, light, red) and I set it with gel.
5. Pencil Liner – L’Oreal Voluminous Smoldering Liner in Brown
6. Curl Lashes and put on Mascara – Usually DiorShow in Mitzah (LE color, waaaahhh)
7. Lips! Either tinted lip balm (I have L’Oreal ones and Burts Bees ones) or I’ve been using the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey (a nice neutral pink).
Chelsea says
but this takes me about 5 minutes if I’m on top of things.
Trisha says
For me, there’s almost always a shimmer involved. Usually with something on my face, like a shimmery blush or shimmery bronzer. It just makes me happy and makes me feel summery.
Anna says
Clinique Dramatically Different moisturizing gel
Urban Decay de slick to keep my forehead from turning into an oil slick
MAC Fast Response eye cream
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Fawn
– will be replaced by the NARS TM once my tube is finished! Love this new product, many thanks for your recommendation!!
Bobbi Brown corrector in Peach
– no concealer needed! Somehow the corrector manages to cover AND match my skin tone
– set with a Tarte Smooth Operator powder
MAC sheertone blush in Peaches
– my non-glittery version of NARS Orgasm
MAC careblend powder in Gold-Go-Lightly
MAC highlighter in Superb
MAC Chromaline in Black Black
MAC Impeccable brow pencil in Taupe
+ whatever mascara and lippies are in the purse for the day! I collected a bunch of mascara samples in a short amount of time so I just distributed them so I can apply on the go. Keeps the routine at home to 10 minutes max 🙂

I really wanted to like the NARS tinted moisturizer but I found it was too dewy for my oily skin. I also hate that the NARS color range is way too yellow for my fair/pink-ish complexion. I know yellow-based foundation is good to cancel out redness but it just looks too sallow on me! Does anyone else have this problem?
Wendy says
Yes. I feel the same way about the Nars tinted moisturizer. My skin is usually oily. When I tried using it, I always broke out with pimples. However, since I just got microdermabrasion and used Retin-A, my skin got really dry. My skin can’t get enough moisturizer! So, the Nars tinted moisturizer worked great along with additional moisturizers.
I also agree that it is way too yellow. And, I’m Asian! But, now that my skin has tanned from being out on my road bike, the yellow in St. Mortiz isn’t as noticeable.
Once my skin heals back to its normal condition (combo-oily), I’ll go back to using Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.
Kristina says
My 10 minute summer routine has been cut down to an even faster time thanks to my discovery of BB cream (foundation, concealer, moisturizer and SPF all in one!).
1. Dr. Jart’s Beauty Balm (BB cream) OR Garnier’s BB cream – I love both!
2. Little bit of bronzer
3. LIttle bit of blush
4. Mascara
5. Lipgloss
And I’m out the door and off for a fun summer day trip!
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
Haha. My boyfriend has learnt that when I say 10 minutes it’s probably 20, so he actually still has time for something else but let’s see…
1) Dior Hydra Life BB cream. I know this doesn’t work for everyone, but my skin tone and type seems to adore this baby!
2) Bobbi Brown Sable till fill my brows
3) If I have anything to cover up, NARS stick concealer in Custard
4) Some kind of cream shadow. I’m going to say Armani Eyes to Kill #14 because it works so well alone for me
5) Mascara, depending on whatever I’m testing out really
6) Chanel Sable Rose. Blush/highlighter all in one. Puts a lot of life back to my face!
7) Some kind of lip product. I’m not too picky!
Vonvon says
Laneige sunblock SPF40 with color correcting property, set with MAC Magically Cool Liquid Powder in Truth & light. A light dusting of Guerlain Meteorites in Beige Chic all over face.
Define brow with Boots No7 brow pencil in Black.
A coral blush, using MAC Stereo Rose a lot lately.
Any lipgloss.
Sometimes, a cream shadow like Benefit RSVP on lids.
kalcedon says
It kind of depends on whether I’m tan or not. When I’m not tan, I’m wearing a Maybelline or Miss Sporty foundation, some local dollar store yet pretty great powder (Lora), Il Makiage’s TV Touch concealer under my eyes, a L’oreal (forgot the name) concealer for my blemishes… and a light dusty brownish rose (also Lora) or peach blush (Catrice). For my eyes, if I want to keep it simple, I put a brownish-bronzish cream shadow (like Essence’s Stay All Day in Coppy right) and Maybelline’s 1 by 1 mascara. For lips, I like wearing peaches, subdues corals.
When I’m tan, it’s the same, but with a darker Max Factor foundation (Lasting Performance is the name, I think), and I usually wear bronze or beige lips whe I’m doing a quick look with a bit stronger peach blush. But when I have time, I’m gonna pick up my brighter lippies as well.
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
1. Make Up For Ever Aqua Black cream shadow for tightlining
2. Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in 0L on the water line and 5L for the upper lash line
3. Bobbi Brown Navajo eyeshadow on the lids to even the tone
4. Shiseido lash curler
5. CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume mascara
6. Edward Bess Quad Royale in Monte Carlo (blush and highlighter–such an amazing color!)
7. Jack Black lip balm
8. Urban Decay brow gel
Ok…maybe it’s more like 15 minutes, but it’s my everyday, casual face for if I’m not going anywhere particularly exciting–or if I’m running late (which is all the time)
Twyla says
Lets break it down:
1. Avon Daily Moisturizer – just recently started to use it, its light weight & my skin glows!!
2. Vichy Aqualia under my eyes – its dramatically reduces puffiness & redness!!
3. Cover Girl LashBlast Volume Mascara in Jet Black
4. MAC Blush – its a bronzer & Blush combo.. forget the color name
5. MAC Minieralize Skinfinish – Highlights
6. GOSH Lipgloss in Nude
Sometimes theres a little sweep of MAC or NYC sparkle on the lids but not often. 🙂
Kelly - Glitter Diaries says
I haven’t tried NARS’ tinted moisturizer but I think that’s next on my shopping list to buy!
For my quick summer makeup routine I’ve been using BB Creams a lot lately and I use Cover FX Cream Foundation as concealer. I love using Annabelle Smudge Paints to achieve smokey lined eyes. I have to use bronzer always so I normally reach for NARS Laguna or an NYC bronzer. And I always have one of Revlon’s Lip Butters with me 🙂

Sadly, my summer makeup is the same as my spring, fall and winter makeup! 🙂 Tarte Smooth Operator, NARS Orgasm, Clinque Brow Keeper, YSL Faux Cils and UD Whiskey liner. I do try to occasionally swipe on a gloss or a blam. Occasionally. 🙂
Ines, Cha Cha, LeRoux & Emily says
10 minute makeup:
Korean BB Cream (right now it’s the Face Shop’s BB Cream in the purple tubey thing) – it has HIGH SPF (SPF 40 PA +++) for a skin product, and it’s got all sorts of softening and brightening stuff in it – applied under the eyes first and then blended outwards, using my fingers and a sponge;
Set with MAC Blot to get rid of that telltale shine (applied with a large powder puff from MAC to not disturb the BB Cream too much) from sunscreen;
Add a little blush, right now it’s Bobbi Brown Nectar or MAC Mocha, using a light hand or a skunk brush (MAC 187), blend, and add a little shimmer with Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick in Pink – but not too much because I don’t want to look greasy or like I’m hot-flashing;
Apply lip color – I like punchier, fun shades in the summer – Clinique Watermelon, Chanel Insolente, MAC See Sheer just to name a few.
I don’t bother with eye makeup because it’s crazy humid here sometimes and I just can’t be bothered to be worried about my eye makeup.
Iris says
My ten minute makeup:
-SPF 30 sunscreen
-powder
-eye primer
-eye cream
-eyeshadow
-lipgloss
Concealer if necessary
I must try the NARS moisturiser once it comes out in SPF here. They currently only have the non-SPF version in Canada.
NeenaJ says
It’s so much fun to read everyone’s routine. I’m mid-30s, fair to light in skintone with pink undertones and freckles. Skin is mostly dry but prone to hormonal acne. Here’s mine, not including skincare:
Face: Elta MD physical sunscreen in SPF 30 – this stuff is my HOLY GRAIL; Either BTRC Jasmine Water BB Cream for less coverage or Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation in Rose Ivory for more coverage.
Eyes: Primer (either UDPP or TFSI); Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener to camoflauge my blue circles – either Bisque or Light Bisque (it’s the light pink one); CARGO eyeshadow in Carmel for an allover highlight; Milani Eye Tech Liquid Eye Liner in Black for a cat eye; Tarte Lights! Camera! Lashes! Mascara in Black.
Cheeks: a quick sweep of Edward Bess Ultra Luminous Bronzer in Daydream on my cheeks, down the bridge of my nose & my chin with my Real Techniques Blush Brush (love!).
Lips: Anything bright and coral for summer! L’Oreal Caresse in Sunset Angora; MAC Crosswires; YSL Rouge Glossy Stain in Coril Fauve, etc., etc.

If I only have 10 minutes to do my face i focus more on skincare. i would
wash my face with NARS Gentle Cream cleanser
tone with NARS Hydrating Freshening Lotion
apply eye cream Lancome Genefique
then apply Neutrogena Healthy Defense Liquid Moisturizer with Helioplex SPF50
then use NARS Brightening Serum
for the makeup i won’t use foundation, but i’ll use a bit of Clinique Air Brush concealer, some NARS Laguna bronzer or MAC Fleur Power blush (whichever is closest), some cream eyeliner by Maybelline, then Lancome Doll Lashes for Mascara, i’ll fill my brows a little, apply some MAC Prep+Prime transparent pressed powder in the t zone and add a bit of gloss and i’m done.
Sanya says
In 10 minutes? Well, after washing my face and moisturing with some sunscreen I like to give my skin a few minutes to breathe before I attack it with product. 🙂 After that, I dab some MAC concealer where I need it, then stipple over it all with MAC’s match master foundation, I set it all with some Physician’s formula mineral powder and then throw down Tarte’s Amazonian 12 hour blush in Tipsy… it might seem like a weird way to approach things, but it gives me a pretty fresh look for a good long while, and I don’t really feel the need for to eye make up simply because I wear extremely flashy glasses. 🙂
Nina says
Mine takes less than 10 minutes, I think…
Prime face and lids (after sunblock and moisturizer).
Conceal and set.
Thin layer of Sonia Kashuk Tinted Moisturizer.
Swipe of MAC Brule or something similar on the lids + eyeliner.
Brows.
Cream Blush + Light contour.
Setting Spray + Translucent Powder.
Lipbalm.
Done and done!

Gloss du jour. Lately MAC Curvaceous Lip Glass.

Wow this is fun! My 10-minute makeup routine is actually my daily make-up routine. I usually play it up on the eyeliner (winged/cat-eyed/rimmed/tightlined), so the variety would be more on the eyeliner product. And in my boring town, that’s what I do for night-out, too, with an additional of a simple swipe of an eyeshadow or two. *sigh*
I also always have alternatives whether it’s day makeup or night makeup.
Face: Tarte Smooth Operator Tinted Moisturizer / Lucy Minerals Original Formula with e.l.f. Studio Face Brush
(have been using up NARS TM samples, but haven’t decided to go with it or not)
Concealer: Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer #3 Medium
Highlight: Silk Naturals Stick Concealer #3 (use it Kim K’s MUA’s style)
Contour: MAC Sculpt / Benefit Hoola (cheek hollow, jaw, and temples) & Mac Wedge (nose and eye crease) with The Body Shop Blush Brush
Blush: YSL Creme de Blush 01 Velvety Peach
Eyebrows: Pixi Brow Pencil “Black”
Eye liner: Maybelline Gel Liner “Black” with Essence Small Angled Brush / Milani LIquif’eye Eye Liner “Black” / Revlon Kohl Liner “Black”
Mascara: Essence Maximum Definition Volume Mascara / Too Faced Lashgasm
Lips: EMC / Jack Black Lip Balm / Burt’s Bees Tinted Lipbalm “Hibiscus” / Silk Naturals Kisser Slicker “Darling” / Yves-Rocher Lipgloss “Peche”
Then I’m out of the door because I probably am already running late for whatever I suppose to do!

3. Two coats of either Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes or Annabelle Le Big Show (weirdest name ever)
4. Annabelle bronzer or Body Shop blush

1. MAC Studio Moisture Tint SPF15 in Medium Plus – I absolutely LOVE this stuff! I swear by ALL MAC products, but after I read Karen’s blog post on NARS’ Pure Radiant tinted moisturizer, I’m definitely going to check it out. Thanks for the tip!
2. MAC Select Cover Up concealer in NW25 – I don’t always use this every day, but when I do, I prefer select because it’s sheer and extremely light weight.
3. Tarte’s Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-hour Smoothing Eye Primer – This is truly the BEST eye primer I’ve come across! I also use MAC’s Paint Pot in Soft Ochre or Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Eden, but once I sampled Tarte’s new eye primer, I was hooked and highly recommend it to EVERY girl out there!
4. MAC Fleur Power blush – I’m a huge fan of MAC blushes and always change my blush colour according to whatever lip and eye I do. However, Fleur Power is my go-to colour for the Spring/Summer!
5. MAC Naked Lunch, Girlie, Orb and Folie eye shadows – I like to do a natural smokey eye for work every day. I put Naked Lunch on my lid, Girlie in my crease, Orb to highlight and Folie in my outer v. Again, depending on my mood I switch my colours up, but use these four for the most part!
6. Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner – Ok, let me tell you how this eyeliner is absolutely comparable to MAC’s fluidline in blacktrack (no word of a lie!) and it’s HALF the price! I use this to line my upper lid with a bent angled eyeliner brush.
7. L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes mascara – Doesn’t clump, super clean bristles, amazing wear power. I usually go between this one or CoverGirl’s LashBlast.
8. MAC lipstick in Bombshell – I own many MAC lipsticks, but today I’m wearing Bombshell. I like to finish it off with MAC’s Dazzleglass in Baby Sparks – absolute stunner!
I really like to take my time on my daily makeup routine, so this probably takes me around 25 minutes to do every day! 🙂
