Vice, thrice. Nice!
I enjoy humming the Miami Vice theme song to myself when I use the new Urban Decay Vice3 Palette ($60).
Duun-dah-dun, dah-dahdun dah-dah-dahda-dun.
Dahdun-dahdun-dun-dun-dun, dahda-dun-dahdun-dahdun-dun-dun-dun…
Why?
Because I can. 🙂
But that’s just one of many reasons to break into song while using this palette, with another being the included cute matchy-matchy clutch.
(In some circles, I go by the nickname “Clutch Collector,” or “Hoarder of Bags,” or “Lover of Anything She Can Stuff Gel Pens and Cat Treats Into…That Still Zips Up.”)
The new case is one of several tweaks Urban Decay made to Vice3, the new followup to their popular Vice and Vice2 palettes. The brand also trimmed it down, making it slimmer and easier to travel with (this Vice is goin’ places!); raised the price by a taco (that’s $1 in layman’s terms); changed the layout; and included 20 new eyeshadow shades.
The shadows are grouped together by column, with coordinating neutrals in the column on the far left, jewel tones in middle columns and smokey shades in the column on the far right.
I don’t know why, but this layout works well for me. I find it easy to wrap my head around and, oddly, quite thrilling…like petting my cat with my bare feet or biting into a cold slice of leftover pizza.
Maybe it’s ’cause each column looks like the colors in a standalone quad.
Instead of a palette with shadows that seem haphazardly strewn about — hello, Vice and Vice 2 — Vice3 is laid out like five quads, each with a distinct personality, and for me that one change makes this palette, among the Vices, easier to use.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’ll be grabbing this often.
As Urban Decay fans might expect, UD unleashed the proverbial pigment hounds unto these shades! Plus, they’re easy to blend and last for me from 10-12 hours.
But dude…the fallout? With the technology we have now — we can send unmanned probes 34.8 million miles to Mars — we can’t prevent eyeshadow from leaping off brushes and landing on our cheekbones?
Until that glorious day arrives, you will find me, Vice3 and my eye brushes doing our best Morse code impressions, tap-tap-tapping away the excess powder before applying these shadows to my lids.
PRICE: $60
AVAILABILITY: Coming soon to Sephora, Ulta and select Macy’s stores; and coming September 13 to urbandecay.com

I have been LOVING some of the new palettes out there. May have to pick up this one. I love that UD has great palettes for travel – it means I don’t have so much to pack. I really love that Vice 3 comes with so many different shades to choose from. One of my current fave palettes is Too Faced in Country – it’s small and comes with some fun colors (Paper Roses is my favorite for enhancing my hazel/green eyes). I think I will definitely pick up Vice 3….

Hi Katherine!
The TF Country Palette is a lot of fun. 🙂 I like it a lot, too! Do you have a rose gold liner? I find that it looks really pretty with the shadows from that palette, especially if you do the rose gold lower lash line.

I like the look of the blue shadows !
I think blue will be be trending this holiday season because the be Balm palette looks to have similar blue shades.
I might have to pick this one up…

Hi Marisa,
I LOVE blue eyeshadow, especially deep navy blues. Do you wear blue often? I feel like I should wear it more, but I get so comfortable with my go-to neutrals, you know?

I’ve always loved UD but hated the fallout. I’ve found that using their primer potion beforehand seems to help the shadow stick better so I’m a lot happier 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jessica,
Even with primer I get fallout, gah! Kind of related (not really) but have you tried any of the new UD false lashes? I’m wearing the Instalush ones today and they’re really lovely!

See how you do me Karen?! I was allllll set to pass on this after seeing another post and photos in Instagram. Then I see your post. Gah! Let me start counting pennies.

I just saw that you RT’d it on twitter. TY! Did you change your thumbnail pic? I almost didn’t recognize you! 😀

B says
off topic but what are you wearing on your cheeks karen? Whatever it is it looks fantastic!
Karen says
Thanks, B. It’s the CC+ Radiance Palette by It Cosmetics. 🙂 I’m also wearing UD’s new Aura baked highlighter.

…So, I just clicked onto the UD website a couple of minutes ago.
Vice 3 was up.
Things get kind of blurry after that, but I think one might be on its way to me…
…I think I need to have a lie down… 😉

So, so m pretty! I’m glad you mentioned the colors working in columns. It makes so much more sense now! Before it just looked random (like the last 2) but I totally see how they work together now. I really like this!

Chances are that I’m picking this one up as soon as UD comes to Switzerland! There’s a launch party next week, so hopefully the actual store will open soon after!
Laarni says
Gorgeous! I also like the idea that UD grouped the shades in columns. Awesome!!! Thanks for the swatches!!

I just got this last week, and my reactions were similar to yours, Karen. Upon opening Vice 3, I was so pleased to see such a well-balanced palette from UD. It looked like it hit all the right notes: a great mix of fall’s demanded jewel tones, some nice matte/ neutrals, soft shimmers — a solid mix of bold and more pedestrian colors that, taken together, can make for very un-boring day-to-day looks. I was amped, and of course, had to play with my new toy ASAP! Well. Pigments, as expected, were fantastic; blendability was, more or less, there; but my god, the fallout.
I was literally looking down at my brush, wondering, “What is this? Did I do something wrong? Why is there blue pigment on my cheeks?!” (this did NOTHING to help my undereye situation, either, but that’s neither here nor there). I was sincerely surprised at the level of fallout/ dryness in some of the shades — particularly considering the palette’s price point. Fallout is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves from better brand eyeshadows… I guess it’s just a buyer’s remorse trigger, or something, for me. Anywho, needless to say, ladies, apply your undereye primers/ concealer(s) AFTER you apply from your Vice 3!

the shades are pretty but I think I’m going to have to pass on this. they’re not as vibrant as I thought they were going to be.

The burgundy shades look amazing! And I also love the makeup you did with this palette.

Bobby Dazzle really makes this whole look pop.
I <3 it!

I am all eyes for this palette.. So many amazing shades..
It would have been best with the fallout.. but still i cant get over this one.. I wannttss.. <3
MizzJ says
This looks so pretty and would definitely fill that niche for colored shadows that I’m lacking. Ugh love UD but you’re right about the fallout. It’s okay though, I’d rather put up with tapping off excess to get that lovely pigmentation!
Amy says
The Vice loojs stunning on you! I am locing the colors, but stating the obvious again, the fallou t on UD shadows killa me. 🙁
Karen says
Thanks, Amy. If they could just tweak the shadows so they didn’t fall out they’d be perfect, right? Still, you gotta love the pigment and blendability.
I hope you had a lovely weekend!
Kim says
That’s a whole lot of intriguing shadow! I’m a big fan of column 4 but I’m sure it would put me in hot mess territory. And, ugh, the fallout. So with you on that.
