The economy’s got a lot of us rethinking our beauty spending habits. If you’re looking to save dough but still want in on the spring collection action, Urban Decay’s Eric Jimenez suggests looking for makeup that multitasks.
“In this economy-friendly environment,” suggests Eric, international makeup artist and Urban Decay worldwide retail director, “you want products with multiple functions.” Budget beauties are looking for lipsticks that double as blushes and lip colors that also work around the eyes. “Every woman wants something that she can do more than one thing with in her handbag.”
Urban Decay cosmetics, a line known for highly pigmented and colorful makeup, offers a few interesting multitaskers for spring.
Fellow members of Club Recessionista, here are Eric’s suggestions on how to get the most bang for your buck with items from the spring collection (in stores next month).
Strike a pose, Eric!
New Sin Potion Primer, a multitasking monster!
One of the most flexible items in the spring line is the new Sin Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($17), a shimmery, champagne version of Urban Decay’s cult classic, Primer Potion.
While intended as an eyeshadow base, Sin works well as a highlighter, too. Apply it along the bridge of the nose, under the brow bone and along the inner corner of the eyes to brighten and glow.
Eric even uses Sin on the lips. “Use it on the lips with a transparent or a see-through gloss over it,” he suggests, where it adds a frosty, fawn color and extends the wear time of lipsticks and glosses.
Oh, and if you’re running late (or just plain lazy, haaaaay), swipe Sin on your eyelids and blend with a finger. Voila! — instant eyeshadow.
Double duty with Cream Shadows and 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencils
From top to bottom:Whipped, Weeds, Delinquent and Moonshine
The new Cream Shadows ($17 each; available in 12 colors) and the four 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil spring shades ($16) multitask like mo’ fo’s.
Cream Shadows work as both eyeshadows and liners. When Eric uses Asphalt, a shimmery black, as a liner, he sweeps the doe-foot applicator along the lower lash line and blends away harsh lines with a finger.
Have any black eyeshadows at home that you haven’t used in years? Bring ’em back to life atop a base layer of shimmery Asphalt.
Packed with moisturizing ingredients like Jojoba oil and Vitamin E, the four new 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils — Graffiti, Flipside, Rasom and Underground — double as liners and eyeshadows.
From left to right: Graffiti, Flipside, Rasom and Underground
The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils are great as shadows when you want a quick pop of color. Just line the top lash line with one of them, and blend the color up into the crease with a finger.
Midnight Cowboy lipstick for nude cheeks and lips
Midnight Cowboy lipstick ($22), a shimmery fawn with flecks of gold glitter, might turn out to be Urban Decay’s next cult classic. According to Eric, “Midnight Cowboy is beautiful on everybody.” He’s used it on women of all shades and calls it universally flattering.
To really stretch out those dolla-dolla-bills-ya’ll, Eric advises against just slathering on Midnight Cowboy and other lipsticks and blotting away the excess with a tissue.
Instead, waste less lipstick by lightly tapping the tube against the lips and patting with a finger to blend.
Then, take the leftover lipstick on your fingertip, and work it into your cheeks. 🙂
For a nude lip able to dance the night away, apply Sin Potion Primer, and layer Midnight Cowboy lipstick on top.

Urban Decay’s spring 2009 has a lil’ something for everyone, but OOH! — I’m all over my Midnight Cowboy and those 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencils…
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’m intrigued by Sin Primer Potion, just make sure you look up one of those tutorials on how to get all the product out of the tube!
Briana says
Oooh, all of this stuff looks like fun! Would definitely like to try the Primer!
Maggie says
woooow, it looks greatt!!! <3
Briana says
Crappy! They don’t ship to Canada either!
Rae says
I’m so excited for Sin PP ^^ It looks gorgeous (even on your lips – whoa, I wouldn’t have expected that from a primer!), and I love the original UDPP! Would you say it’s just as good at making shadow “stick”?
Rae´s last blog post..Or maybe a whimper?
Karen says
Hi Tavia,
It’s pretty — I used it as a simple was for a FOTD today. I’ll post up pics soon. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
LOL, I’m not about to take a handsaw to my tube… I lack both the coordination and upper body strength.
Karen says
Hi Briana,
Yeah, it’s pretty colorful and playful. It’ll definitely appeal to those that love vibrant, colorful makeup!
Karen says
Hi Maggie,
It’s pretty! What do you like the most?
Karen says
Hi Briana,
Oh no, that’s a bummer!
Karen says
Hi Rae,
I have only used it as a wash… when I layered the pencils on top I did notice that it held onto them nicely. I’ll let you know how they handle powders and when I get the chance to play with it a lil’ bit more. 🙂
Jen says
Hey Karen
Hmm I’m pretty intrigued about the Sin primer potion. Have you tried Sin eyeshadow? It is effin’ gorgeous. Is it super shimmery? Every time I’ve seen swatches is looks almost metallic. I’m not sure if I need it or not though–I have Mac paint pot in Bare Study and Clinique’s cream eye shadow in another nude color, so I’m kind of waffling.
I want to try the 24/7 liners so bad! But I’ve put myself on a pretty strict budget, and I’m hoping somehow I’ll find a discount on them one day.
Vampy Vanrish says
Yep, I too am all over the 24/7 eye pencils! I have 3 of them already and LOVE them!

Hi Karen. I want to try 24/7 liners too but we don’t have it. When Sephora opened last month, I was very excited to try it but was disappointed to know that UD is not carried. I don’t like things that multi-task actually. Too complicated LOL.
Karen says
Hi Jen,
I haven’t tried Sin eyeshadow! I am looking forward to checking it out during my next Sephora jaunt. 🙂 I’ll let you know if it’s super shimmery.
You just might get addicted to the 24/7 liners. Maybe when one of your staple colors runs out you can try one of ’em!
Karen says
Hi Vampy Varnish,
Oh! What colors do you have?
Karen says
Hi Miss QQ,
That’s too bad! Perhaps if customers start demanding it they’ll start to carry the line. You never know. 🙂
Alicia says
Love your blog about this! I’m so excited to get Sin Primer Potion. I love the original primer so I’m sure I will love this one!
Karen says
Hi Alicia,
If you love the original one then I think you’ll find this handy. Do you wear lots of shimmer? Sin will definitely take those shadows to the next level!
odelle says
I’m very disappointed that UD didn’t used this chance to change the packaging for PP. I think next time, I’ll buy Too Faced Shadow Insurance.
Karen says
Hi Odelle,
I really like Shadow Insurance. Mine went MIA, though! I can’t seem to find it and I’m heartbroken.
nai says
ooh, pretty pretty!
the only concern i have is a hygenic one, if we’re talking about using any product on both eyes and lips. don’t want to give yourself a bug from your mouth to your eye. so not sexy!
YJ says
That makeup looks hella fun!!! I might have to go get that primer stat… once I (finally) get paid!

Hi Nai,
Oh, good point! Gotta watch out for that…
Karen says
Hi YJ,
It’s very colorful and playful. Do you like to wear brights?
Karen says
Hi YadiQ,
I know you are all about the color. 🙂
Do you have any Deluxe Shadow colors you can recommend? I want to try those, too!
Karen says
Hi Vampy Varnish,
Oh! What fun names. I will note those colors on my list. 🙂
I gotta have an eyeliner named after a Prince song…
YadiQ says
i have the deluxe shadow box it has the following colors
Fishnet, Honey, Ransom, Graffiti, Zero, Peace, Shag, Scratch, and Underground
the other eye palette to look out for is the urban ammo set it has:
Smog , Maui Wowie , Mildew , Shattered, Oil Slick, Polyester Bride, Last Call, Grifter, Chopper , and Sin
i can honestly say i love them all!! prior to getting the deluxe set i had bought fishnet which is a fabulous color pinky, purple and irridescent. the urban ammo is also a great set and at 30 something bucks a set its really a lot of variety for the buck the glitter shadows also arent over the top they are subtle – my only dislike of the line is the primer potion i just dont like it but the sadows work darn good with the two faced shadow insurance
in the 24-7 liners i got the vip set as well as velvet rope and they are all divine!
have fun i hope you get some of these suggestions!
Amanda says
24/7 liners are sooo awesome. I have 3 original colors, and they are fab-they stay on like glue! I really like the swatch of grafitti. Sin primer potion sounds interesting. I was very, very loyal to the original PP until I decided to try Too Faced SI. 🙂 And I LOVE that royal blue cream eyeshadow swatch! WOWZERS!
Karen says
Hi YadiQ,
I may have to get Maui Wowie and Polyester Bride for the names alone. 🙂
Did I tell you that my Too Faced Shadow Insurance went MIA? I can’t find it. *tears*
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Yah, that blue cream shadow is NOT messing around. I am planning on wearing that with some false lashes, woo hoo. It’s one of those colors where you have to go big, you know?
YadiQ says
hmmm
i think tabs stole your shadow insurance!!! i highly doubt el hub had anything to do with it lol
i say buy the 2 shadow sets and a new SI stat!
Karen says
Hey YadiQ,
You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if either El Hub or El Tabs hid my beloved tube. They both believe I have gone too far with eye my makeup obsession.
BUT THEY CAN’T HOLD ME DOWN!!!
Sonja says
Absolutely fabulous! I gotta get me some of that potion and that lipstick. I adore Midnight Cowboy. Thanks for the great post!
