Urban Decay Lipstick in Naked

Is it just me, or did today feel like the longest Wednesday EVER? I started off with good intentions — I meant to finish a project, do a couple loads of laundry and run my errands after work, but somewhere along the way things went to hell in a hand basket.

Tomfoolery reared its unproductive head, and an impromptu afternoon photo session with Tabs did not help.

Work it, Tabs! Make love to the camera.

This began as a simple Urban Decay Fall 2009 lipstick post. There are only three lipsticks in the release (Naked, Oilslick and Confession, $22 each), so it shouldn’t have taken long, right?

Oh, how I wish…

I guess it’s hard to take yourself seriously when you’re wearing sparkly black lipstick. :)

All three of the lipsticks in the release feel thin and slick on my lips and give off a faint brown sugar fragrance (but they’re unflavored).

Of all the shades, creamy pink Naked ended up being my favorite because of how wearable I think it is. Then, I’d go with Oilslick, a shimmery gray-black, in second place and Confession, a deep brownish plum, rounding out third.

These aren’t colors I’d wear to Safeway to buy bananas, but they’re still a lot of fun. And should I ever get turned by Vampire Bill (VB!), I could wear Oilslick and Confession all the time.

It never hurts to be prepared!

Speaking of True Blood, I’m still hooked. El Hub and I are watching the last two episodes of the first season tonight on DVD.

What are you up to? I hope you got more done today than I did.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hi Karen,
I am new to your blog and may I say I love love love it! I am such a newbie to makeup, and can barely do even a smoky eye, but girl, reading your blog has helped sooo much!

  2. Jane says:

Hi Karen: You’re hilarious. How do these lipsticks compare to MAC or Clinique or any drugstore brands?

btw: I found out I’m pregnant this week. Aaaugh! I wrote a guest-post here a few months ago on baby & mommy products. This makes baby #2. I had to tell someone because my husband and I decided to keep it a secret until we feel that we’re out of the woods, so to speak. I don’t think I’ll keep this secret for long, though.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Jane,

Honey, congratulations! This is such exciting news. I will keep you in my thoughts and hope that things go smoothly until you’re out of the woods. Thank you for sharing this with me… I’m really happy for you!

About the lipsticks, I would say they’re similar to Clinique’s Almost Lipstick. Actually, Oilslick kinda reminds me a little of Black Honey.

  3. Catherine says:

Hehehehe, I love you Karen. =)

Confession looks really pretty! I love those dark plummy colors. I can’t wait ’till Fall rolls around so I can whip out MAC Hang Up again. :D

    • Karen says:

      Hi Catherine,

Me too. I’m gonna have a hard time letting go of summer (it’s one of my favorite seasons), but I am looking forward to dressier makeup for fall. :)

  4. Paris B says:

Wait wait! How come oil slick doesn’t look black on your lips? Darn no Urban Decay here :P Cute post though – I’m still loving your nail color! :P

  5. Solé says:

Ahahahahaha!!! You are so adorable. This is the kind of stuff that keeps me reading your blog, even while I’m too broke to buy makeup. Seriously, there’s nothing unproductive about tomfoolery. Sometimes you just have to let go and have a blast.

And I’m lovin’ those lipsticks on you! They look totally different on you than in the tubes. If I wouldn’t have seen them on you, I would have immediately written them off as unwearable, but they look very nice with your complexion. I wonder if I can pull them off…

Oh, and your hair looks super cool all wavy like that. I’ve decided to grow my hair out again, but this time I’m only using semi-permanent dye ’cause I plan to change the color once it gets long. I’m thinking I may go back to my natural dark blond, but not sure yet…

    • Karen says:

      Hi Sole,

You could easily do the two darker ones in addition to the nude. It would look very dramatic with your skin. Lovely!

Thanks re the hair. I finally had a good hair day after a weekend of Medusa hair. I just started using a product from Bumble & Bumble for beachy waves… I really like it so far!

While I love your hair short, I think it also looks great long, too. What made you decide to grow it out again?

  6. Brittnie says:

Just got into watching True Blood, too. It’s soooo addicting!

  7. mela says:

at this point, i’ve just decided that i really ought to have been born a vampire…i already have the white porcelain skin and the amber eyes, and lord knows sister would love to sparkle (in the land of the twilight vampires)

so i’ve been hunting vampy shades for fall. sephora doesn’t have their fall stuff out yet – i’m curious to see how nars’ fast ride lipstick holds up next to confession…fast ride seems more violet, confession a more vampy plum? until i decide, i’ll be playing with mac lipstick in media

karen – i can so see the secret punk rock kid in you busting out in oil slick – its also really great layered on top of stuff, try paranoid lipstick…sexxxy

    • Karen says:

      Hi Mela,

OoOoO… I’ll have to do some experimenting. I’m really surprised that I liked it so much. It’s kinda cool!

Have you seen the Dior Fall lipsticks? Lots of vampire-y action going on there. :)

  8. Kate & Zena says:

Ha ha ha ha ha, rotfl. Oh, your impromptu shoots always leave me crying from laughing so hard! Poor Tabs! He didn’t look like he was happy being disturbed from his nap!

Let’s see it’s 11 PM and I’m….drinking Coca-Cola. This could very well be the culprit of my staying up until 4 AM. Well, that and movies. Have you ever noticed there is nothing on television in the morning? Maybe that’s why I’ve become a night owl. Or maybe it’s because watching the Tudors at night is cooler at night (it’s a pity the last season will be airing in 2010. Why are all the good shows so short?!?!?!).

Zena is uber tired because she was tranquilized (she’s terrified of thunder) at noon so she’s snoring up a storm. I’ve also just realized I need a manicure….my nails are getting to the poking-eyeball-when-taking-out-contact-lenses length and I’m awful at trimming them myself. I always manage to cut them too short so I feel like I have stubby fingers.

  9. Lina says:

Your posts are hilarious!!!! I can’t wait to see the Naked lipstick in person, it seems similar to Chanel Naive which I love to death.

    Thanks for the great pics!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Lina,

I heart Chanel Naive, too. I feel Naked is a touch more shiny… but one can never have enough shine on their lips, I suppose.

Can I just say there are days when I don’t miss 90s matte lips?

  10. connie says:

naked reminds me a lot of cute-ster from earlier in the year. i hope it’s just as fantastic when i go see it for myself!

  11. Glosslizard says:

I’m loving Oilslick on you! You could totes rock that to Safeway, no sweat!

And Tabs is too sexy for his lipsticks! ;)

  12. jojoba says:

Oh I want to be naked! Eh, I want to GET Naked. Wrong again, I want that Naked! so beautiful!

  13. Marisol says:

In the first picture with Oilslick, I think you are channeling your inner vamp. I think VB would approve.

  15. Caitlin says:

I love naked! It reminds me so much of my beloved MAC High Tea….And I didn’t get as much done as I wanted. Also, sneezing in a drying mud musk isn’t pleasant haha. But I did get my first “scrabble” in Scrabble today. So much for that Stat project though… tee hee. And I love your pictures!!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Caitlin,

I’ve sneezed in a mud mask before! Yup, it’s NOT pleasant. :)

Naked does have some High Tea elements. On me it’s not as frosty and has less beige than High Tea… it’s still an awesome nude shade!

  16. Alexzandra says:

I have to admit I’m surprised that these actually look kinda wearable. Especially because Oilslick looks nuts in the tube.

  17. Tiffany says:

LOL, I love this post! And your hair looks amazing – love the waves – and so SHINY!

  18. Felis says:

I have GOT to try all three of these. I have high hopes for Oilslick, since Piha Black just looked kind of like I’d been doing something unsavory with used motor oil.

Also I love your pictures of Tabs SOO much. Keep `em coming. I read a butt-ton of beauty blogs, and yours is my honest-to-god favorite!

  19. Chamayne says:

Please, please, please tell me what fingernail polish you are wearing and pardon me if this dazzling nail polish has already been addressed…

  20. Elle says:

I love these on you! I haven’t bought anything by Urban Decay in a while, so apparently it may be time to start up again. Love the pics, too–thanks for cracking me up this Thursday morning! Tabs is too cute.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Elle,
:) UD is fun. I like that the line has a lot of style and has a lot of stuff for that’s edgy but wearable at the same time.

      Is it Friday yet?

  21. Karen you are hilarious! You are also so photogenic!! You look pretty even in the funny pics!!

Anyways, great lipcolors, I’m excited to test them out myself.

Karen – you are so funny and cute! Love it. I, too, am being buried under a mountain of laundry.

  23. Anastasia says:

Love the metal faces… thanks for the swatch looks. I may have never tried Oilslick if you hadn’t snapped a photo of it on, because it looks green in the photo!

  24. naked is totally wearable, but i’m more feelin’ the blackberry stain look of confession! i don’t know how i feel about the whole black lippie thing – i went through a goth phase in my early teens, and not really eager to return!

confession + a sultry smudged maroon shadow would be pretty hawt for fall… i’m thinking chunky knits & platform heels!

  25. lipglossme says:

LOL Even with your nose flared out you still look put together. :-D

I really like Naked on you.

I like the stamps that they make on the lipstick. Kinda like the Hello Kitty ones MAC did with theirs.

By the way, what does “CommentLuv” mean when it’s checked?

  26. Elle says:

    “Is it Friday yet?”

I WISH! This morning has been DRAGGING.

Also, I thought of you and Tabs yesterday when my sister and I were out walking our dog. She’s a cat person (more like the cat whisperer, to be honest–she can get any cat to come over to her with her meowing skillz), and there’s this cat down the street that has now adopted her as his cuddle partner whenever we see him lounging around on our walks. He only has three legs, so when he walks he has this little ‘pimp limp’ (or at least that’s what we call it) and he’s black and white. I think you’d love him!

  27. I am digging Naked fo sho. The others I think I would have to pass on.

I just finished book 5 in Sookie’s series. I think I might take a wee bit of a break and read something else before I start 6 though.

    Karen,
OMG…I’m lovin’ your blog. It’s becoming my favorite beauty tip spot. You look great in the pictures. The Naked and Oil Slick shades are nice. I’m surprised that Oil Slick looks wonderful on after reading your color description. Hmmmm? I dunno. Anyway, keep it up. You’re too funny.

  29. gio says:

These look beautiful. I’m surprised at how wearable these are, I wasn’t expecting it at all.

  32. lexi says:

Naked has been getting lots of rave reviews – it may be worth investigating. Then again I have a very strange lip sensitivity issue so I shy away from products I’m unfamiliar with on my lips. But the color, ah the color is making it hard for me to resist!

You know how I love a pink lip with my intensely black smokey eyes!

what’s even more random? I’m starting to get intrigued by the Oilslick lipstick too! Must be my inner goth girl trying to come out again. That being said I will be listening to my Cure album, Head on the Door later today followed with some Siouxsie and the Banshees hahahhahaha!!!

  33. Amy says:

Love it! You are hilarious hawtie! <3 fierce babbbbbbbbby!

  34. Aisha says:

omg rock out gurrrl! I like oilslick the best, not just because it brought the rocker in you but I like the glitter too. :) I love those pictures!!!

  35. Redhead says:

Oilslick looks like a sheer, glossy blackish plum and Confession looks like a glossy burgundy. They actually look pretty wearable on you! Darker skins will be able to pull these off but this paleface won’t ;)

  36. jane says:

ahh! naked looks so pretty! i wanna go try it out now :D
karen, you are such a goofball :) :)

  37. cloudburst says:

Oilslick – I want it. I like Naked too.

  38. Dao says:

    Hey Karen,
I absolutely intrigued by these new colors. I’m loving this brand as well. And your hair!!! Very pretty!!! Love the nail polish too; can you hook me up with the brand name?

  42. Kristin says:

Ooh I like these colors. Your hair looks very cute. Where did you get your necklace?

  43. Ruth says:

OMG those pics are hysterical but you look so fab and glam in every single one of them !!!!!!!!!! Oh, by the way, your little man Tabs is an outrageous flirt, give him lots of kisses and cuddles from me xoxoxox

  44. Ali says:

LOL this post is hilarious.. which is why your blog is the best! even when im not looking for makeup haha

  45. Jenn says:

Ahh I want Naked! Surprisingly Oilslick looks more wearable than Confessions but maybe it’s just the pics?

Anyways, LOVE True Blood. I’m trying to get my BF to watch it, and he kind of wants to…but seriously lacks motivation. Any tips on getting him to join in on the fun?

  46. Tiffany says:

Jenn – that’s easy, just tell him about all the boobies they show, lol.

  47. Susan says:

    Hi Karen -
