I’m not saying I’m ready to raise my hands up to the heavens and yell at the top of my lungs, “J.K. Rowling was right! Magic is real!!” but I’m not ruling it out anymore.
It sure looks like there was wizardry at work over at Laura Mercier headquarters, also known as the Hogwarts of the makeup world, when they concocted Metallic Creme Eye Colour in Burnished Copper ($22).
If you’ve ever dreamt of a creamy version of MAC Sable or, perhaps less likely, imagined yourself smearing a magic potion made of melted copper pennies all over your lids, this warm reddish bronze, with its whisper of plummy gold, could be your dreams coming to life.
For years I’ve searched for something I could use as a base to intensify the copper, bronze, plum, gold and brown colors I love to wear in the fall. With Burnished Copper, I think I’ve finally found it.
Smooth and fluffy, it spreads across my combo oily/dry lids without tugging, and the long-lasting formula has incredible fortitude once it sets. It should last all day long on most skin types, with the possible exception of gals/guys with extremely oily lids, who may need the extra help of a primer.
Remarkably, considering how shiny they are, Laura’s Metallic Cream Eye Colours have always treated my fine lines with dignity and respect. How she manages to make them so shiny without going overboard on the frost is a mystery to me.
I like knowing that I can wear Burnished Copper all by itself, with just a swish of black liner on my upper and lower water and lash lines, without stressing out about it settling into the crinkles that show up when I smile.
Seriously, if that’s not magic, I don’t know what is. 🙂
Where cat ladies like to shop…
Yesterday afternoon, El Hub and I drove down to the mall to grab a burger (his was meat-ful, mine was veg), and after eating, we just sort of tooled around, first to REI to look at camping/zombie apocalypse supplies, like water purification tablets, hatchets and bags of freeze dried food (the Eggs Benedict stays fresh through 2018).
After REI, we walked into Urban Outfitters, where I haven’t been for a while (I feel like I’m too old for most of their clothes, truth be told), but I was really surprised by their big selection of gadgets and gizmos.
They also had a bunch of old-fashioned film cameras and other random tchotchkes and baubles…
Lots of weird books and calendars, too, and a surprising number of products for cat ladies, like drinking glasses and cat-shaped paper clips.
I’m definitely going back when it closer to the holidays.
Okay! I’m off to the grocery store to grab some stuff for dinner and get a bottle of kombucha, my new beverage obsession.
My friend Kat got me hooked on the stuff last week. It’s a fermented tea drink, kinda sweet and sour at the same time. I think it’s probably one of those things you either love or…don’t love, but I think it’s great. And I swear I feel better (more energy, but not wired) after I finish a bottle. The Whole Foods out here carries a couple different brands.
The Unsung Heroes series, a long-running series here on Makeup and Beauty Blog, features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of brands.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Burnished Copper is also amazing under purples that lean more towards plum. Think Trax, Plum Dressing, etc. Ah-may-zing.
Karen says
Hi Rose,
I’ve tried it under Trax, but not Plum Dressing. I’ll do that next!
What other shades do you like to wear it with?
Rose says
I’ve also tried it under Star Violet, Hepcat, and Cranberry. I also like it under Hustle from the Naked Palette. Love Burnished Copper if you haven’t noticed. Lol
Karen says
Cool, I have Star Violet and Hustle. I’ll give both of those a go! I love the color too…do you ever wear it with just black liner? It’s so simple and elegant.
Rose says
Wearing it today! Lol. Have a great Tuesday!
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
My brother got me into Kombucha too (he works at a health food store). I HATED it at first, but it really does grow on you! And it’s really good for you!
Karen says
Hi Becca,
Do you have a brand/flavor of Kombucha that you like? I’ve only really tried and liked the citrus flavor from GT’s, which I get at Whole Foods.
Leigh says
Hi Karen. Been awhile since I’ve commented but nonetheless I have been keeping an eye out. I saw this and felt obligated to say that I have been a big fan of Laura Mercier’s creme eyeshadows since I was 15 (now 21) and while I don’t have this one I still adore them! =D
Karen says
Hi Leigh,
Thanks for popping in to say hello. I always like hearing from readers! 🙂
I love, LOVE her Metallic Eyeshadows. What are your go-to colors, and what do you like to wear them with?
Leigh says
I have Gold and Alloy! I use them for pretty basic stuff since I only started wearing makeup daily a couple of years ago (I’m 21). Usually I just slap ’em on on top of primer to make a cat eye with a little oomph. Sometimes I add a brown in my crease since I didn’t have many bright colors [I just bought the Vice palette, you know which one ;)] so maybe I’ll pair the gold with Vice from said palette, purple and gold sound good to me! I tend to stick to lighter makeup for my work. Blowtorches, humidity, and hydrochloric acid solutions tend not to make for an environment conductive to wearing makeup. Foundation? Fughet about it! It melts right of! XD
Karen says
I want Gold so badly. I swatched it the last time I was at the counter, but unfortunately they were sold out. I bet it looks very elegant with a bit of cat eye liner. 🙂
Oh! If you like wearing brown shades in your crease, try popping your bronzer in there sometime. I do that all the time…it works wonders.
So, I take it you work in a lab?
Leigh says
Haha. No, I’m a Jewelry and Metalcraft major (and Illustration, two majors is a lot of work!) so I work around a lot of fun, dangerous, and not so skin-friendly materials. And I would use bronzer if I owned some XD. I’m really pale and fortunately have fairly pronounced and high cheekbones so I don’t bother with it. That and powder of any kind really dries out my cheeks (our teeny tiny blowtorches at our desks can reach over a thousand degrees!) and then I look like a mutant lizard. Yuch! =)
Heidi says
Oh, that looks amazing! I love copper for my eyes!
Over the summer I saw Kombucha venders all over the place at the various Farmer’s Markets. I’ve only tried it in a blend with green tea in hot tea. Pretty good!
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
You will LOVE this eyeshadow then. If you’re feeling adventurous pop a bit of purple in and ooh-la-la! Sassy. 🙂
Aww, man. How did I miss all the Kombucha booths? I guess I was too distracted by the kettle corn, LOL. Thanks for letting me know…I need to get on that next time I go to the Farmer’s Market.
Heidi says
I went every Thursday night to the Windsor Farmer’s Market and saw a kombucha booth each time. I understand the lure of the kettle corn, very distracting! I was always pulled towards the Indian food stand. Samosas….mmmmm!
Karen says
Oh gosh, samosas are my JAM. One of these days you have to come down and go to Off The Grid in Larkspur. There’s lots of delicious veg food, including samosas!
Heidi says
I definitely want to try that sometime!
Karen says
It’s fun. You have to go early to get the good stuff though, because sometimes the vegan/veg stuff sells out quickly.
Lulle says
I also like the small beauty section they have in Urban Outfitters store. I sometimes find little gems on sale, like that $16 Stila beach palette for 4 bucks, or a set of Cargo lipglosses for the same price (originally $22 I think). They also have a GORGEOUS sparkly aqua polish I’ll review soon!
Karen says
Ours has a pretty decent beauty section too, it seems. I would’ve spent more time if El Hub didn’t drag me outta there. He knows I could easily kill an hour looking at shiny things. What’s the name of your aqua polish?
Lulle says
It’s called Sea Dust!
Nina says
I mostly go to Urban Outfitters for their shoes and their little knick knacks – makes for either an awesome gag gift or a gift for someone hard to find gifts for (aka a gag gift). 🙂
Karen says
They have so many weird things there! Does yours have cat lady things, too?
Nina says
They do, and a lot of just silly things that are quite fun. I did get a black lace dress there for 10 bucks. Its really sheer and I havent found an undergarment for it so its still hanging in my closet. 🙂
Karen says
I have a dress like that — not lace, but some other sort of sheer fabric — from BCBG that I ordered off of Hautelook. I’m still looking for something to wear underneath it…if I find something miraculous I’ll let you know. 🙂
Nina says
There are possibles at good ole Target. I saw a black slip that might definitely work. I might wear it to a wedding im going to in November. 🙂
Christy says
I love Laura Mercier!
Karen says
Me too! What are your Laura faves, Christy?
Chelsea says
Hmm, I’m pretty picky about beverages, I’m not sure if I’d like Kombucha…
Beautiful eyeshadow color! Bet this makes blue eyes look really blue!
Karen says
It has an interesting flavor. You never know…you just might like it! 🙂
Hope you’re having a nice Tuesday so far.
Marina says
Your review now makes me wanna wear my LM eye shadows more often, I have three shades myself! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Marina,
You have to take ’em out to play. 🙂 Which ones do you have and love?
Jennifer says
LOVE the color especially on brown eyed girls… does it crease?
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
I don’t have any issues with creasing, but my lids are mostly dry…if yours are very oily, you may need to layer a primer underneath it first.
Ansh says
is that drink available in India?
Karen says
I’m not sure. You might want to google their website to see if they distribute the product overseas.
Ankita@corallista says
I love MAC Sable and Twinks, I need this!
