Thursday Greetings and Funny Faces With My New Favorite Face Makeup Combo

Published in: Face, Makeup, Makeup Tips/How To

For the love of husky tabbies! — yesterday I could not take a normal picture to save my life.

I don’t know how Tabs and Tyra do it. Some days it just seems, by my expression in every single pic, that I look like I accidentally stepped in dog poop:

But wait, it gets better…

LOL!

I do have a point, and it is this: I have a new favorite face makeup combo that I’ve been dying to tell you about — NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer topped with a little bit of Hourglass Oxygen Foundation Powder.

Together, the two make magic happen! Great coverage (I’d say it’s about a smidgen above medium, just shy of full), feels comfy and lightweight, and it looks like real skin.

Doesn’t look half bad in pictures, either (assuming I don’t look like I just stepped in dog poop).

Additional makeup worn in this look…

What face makeup have you been wearing lately? Anything amazing I should know about?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Now that it’s summer, my skin has more colour (hallelujah!) and is behaving quite well! So I’m just using Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage to spot conceal, and going over the whole face with MAC MSF Natural.

And I can’t forget the bronzer! Guerlain Terracotta Light is my crack! :)

I hope you and Tabs are having a wonderful day so far, Karen!

I haven’t tryied anything by Hourglass yet, but I might have to try this. I am so in love with the NARS tinted moisturizer. You look fab!

  4. Agata says:

Your eyelashes look stunning. I assume they are false? Have you finally mastered putting them on?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Agata!

Thank you. :) Yup, I’m wearing false lashes — the MAC 20 corner lashes.

I’ve been practicing every night before I take off my makeup. I know, so siilly, but I figure it’s like any other skill. If you do it over and over it soon becomes second nature.

The corner ones are also slightly easier to apply, which helps!

      Do you wear falsies often?

      • Agata says:

I have never worn false lashes for the reason that I have no clue how to apply them…I have never really even tried, it just seems too difficult. But maybe I should give them a try and practice because they do look stunning.

        • Karen says:

You should try it! I used to think that it was very hard, and it’s awkward at first, but after a few tries it does get easier. I actually practiced putting them on without the glue first just so I could get the motion down. All I do is hold them with a pair of tweezers and then drop them directly onto my lashes. It’s that easy!

  5. Amy says:

    Lovin’ the funny faces!

Also, your lashes look crazy outta this world phenomenal!

  6. CrystalCandy says:

You look amazing, Karen! (even with the funny faces lol)

  7. Teri says:

Aaaw, you still look great while making funny faces Karen, haha! I love this combo on you, your skin always looks so flawless! And the corner lashes are great on you too btw, gotta love them right? I find them so much easier to apply and they look more natural too!

  8. Chelsea says:

    My current face routine is:

Base: A mix of Make Up Forever Mat Velvet + in Alabaster 15 mixed with sunscreen (Vanicream SPF 60)

Concealer: Coastal Scents Camo Quad (the Peachy-Pinky shade neutralizes my undereye circles like nothing else!)

Blush: Cream Blush (Revlon or Bobbi Brown, I switch colors)

I don’t usually wear powder, but I do use the Urban Decay All Nighter spray on a regular basis.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Chelsea,

I know a lot of people who adore that spray! One of these days I’ll get around to trying it. Do you take it with you when you’re out and about? Or do you just spray it on in the morning and you’re good for the rest of the day?

      • Chelsea says:

I just do it once in the AM, and it seems to make my makeup last better. It’s not necessary for me in winter really (in the Midwest) but it definitely helps when it’s hot and I get sweaty! I used that on my brother’s wife for their wedding (along with Laura Mercier Primer and MUFE Mat Velvet foundation) and her makeup lasted all night with no touchups, despite warm weather, dancing, and stress!

  9. Lol, your expression in the first pic is priceless :-) Also, how great do your lashes look?!

As for face make-up, I’m wearing ELF concealer, NYX liquid HD foundation, Shiseido bronzing foundation as bronzer, ELF cream blush and MAC setting powder.

  10. Irene Christine says:

For daily make up (whenever I decide to put it on) I put :
Nars tinted moisturizer in Cuba (so glad I decided to try it due to your blog! I love this more than the Laura Mercier one!)
    Chanel bronzer
    Guerlain meteorites in Tinted beige
YSL touche eclat in honey (highlighter)
    MAC pro-concealer
    Nars multiple in Gspot
to finish it all off I spray the MAC fix +
Btw I love your lashes!! :)

    • Karen says:

Thanks, Irene Christine! False lashes are so fun. :)

Glad you love the new NARS TM! BTW — what Chanel bronzer are you using?

      • Irene Christine says:

I am using Soleil Tan de Chanel. I love it!! :D I don’t put too much on and it makes my skin look awake. I should try false lashes but I can never put them on right.

  11. Rachel says:

    Lol.
I have been wearing Revlon whipped foundation and tarte smooth operator to top it and then spray of skindinavia setting spray. Nothing amazing but cheap and works. :)

  12. Nina says:

Lately its been MAC Face & Body foundation, no setting powder and MAC ProLongwear Concealer for me! :)

    • Karen says:

      Hey Nina!

Face & Body’s really good. How does it handle your humid weather?

      • Nina says:

Pretty good — seems to stay on the whole day! My humid weather fave is still MAC Studio Fix Fluid but the one I have is a tad too light for me right now — all the swimming has given me quite the tan!

  13. Dawn says:

I think I need to try some Hourglass products since they generally get positive reviews.

Also, what is that nail color you are wearing? I am loving my pastels lately!

  14. Marian says:

    Love it…especially the lashes!

I’ve been wearing Missha Perfect Cover BB cream , Chanel concealer, Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil, Orgasm Blush, a bit of BE Warmth.

BE Prime Time shadow in Sunlit Peach, Lancome Artliner, black, Maybelline Full n Soft

    Chanel Rouge Allure in Libertine

  15. Fieran says:

Karen :) You look amazing! I’ve been trying out the NARS tinted moisturizer but I find it a wee bit too oily for me. I do use it on top of primer though (it’s a habit). Maybe I should use it without primer.

My current favourite combination is Laura Mercier’s new Oil Free Supreme foundation on top of Bare Escentuals Prime Time primer. The foundation is really nice and has a somewhat matte finish. I do use a bit of MAC’s ProLongwear concealer on top and some finishing powder – depending on my mood, either Laura Mercier’s loose powder, MAC’s Prep+Prime powder or sometimes MSF.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Fieran,

Laura’s new foundation is good stuff. It covers EVERYTHING, doesn’t it? What shade do you use? The one that’s closest to my skin is just a touch too red, but I grab it on occasion.

      • Fieran says:

Hi Karen :) For your reference I’m NW43 in MAC and I use Toffee Bronze in Laura Maercier.

Oh I forgot to mention..if you like invisible foundations, Estée Lauder’s Invisible Fluid Makeup is really good too. It’s so natural on my combination oily skin.

      • Fieran says:

I wear Toffee Bronze. I’m an NW43 in MAC for reference.

  16. Ruchita says:

I love your funny faces – adorable! I’ve been wanting to try a new tinted moisturizer, so I’ll have to check out this one by NARS.

I haven’t tried anything new in a while. However, my birthday is next month so I’m making a list of stuff I want to try! :-)

  17. Stephanie C says:

Lover-ly! I loved the outtakes of photos. ♥ The combo of the Nars and Hour Glass looks great on you! I tried the Nars and my skin is just so bad underneath that I need a bit more full coverage.
Lately I have been flip-flopping between Bobbi’s Skin Foundation and MAC NW30. Depends on my mood. Cheeks – DollyMix by MAC (makes my eyes POP). Bobbi’s gel liner in black or brown done really thin (ever smudge this out? I haven’t but wonder if it would work) combined with a nude eye with a bit of dark gold as a contour. Lips – naked. I don’t do lipstick or gloss on a regular basis.

    • Karen says:

Oh girl, you just mentioned one of my fave MAC blushes of all time! Dollymix is so, so great. What brush do you use to apply it? I’m all about the fan brush…

  18. Marina says:

Ha, I actually love the first photo! And these lashes look nice on you ;) Also am reading about that Hourglass powder now.

  19. Kim says:

Oh, I’m sorry, it was impossible to look at your flawless skin because of the amazing drag queen lashes!! Love them!

I did eventually look at your skin, though. And that looks great too. :)

    • Karen says:

See, now those are the lashes I wish we were born with! :D

Are you still loving your Tarte TM?

      • Kim says:

I know! One of my boys has the longest, thickest lashes and he wants to cut them because “they’re in the way and make me look like a girl”. Why are awesome lashes wasted on ungrateful boys? :)

I am! I think you said that the NARS had a little silicone action, too. I definitely prefer that smooth, sheer texture. :)

  20. Katherine G says:

Loving the facial expressions! Your eyelashes look really pretty and your skin looks flawless :) In the summer I don’t wear a lot of stuff on my face (if anything other than tinted moisturizer with SPF), just because with the sweat and sunscreen I break out with at least a few zits. If I’m doing sporty stuff or I know there’s a good chance I will sweat a lot, I just wear Aveeno Positively Radiant SPF 15 or Jergens Natural Glow for Face in Medium/Tan (since I wash my face twice a day, I go with the formula that gives you more glow) SPF 20 with eye makeup with a good primer. If I’m going out, I might us Garnier BB cream and Physician’s Formula Mineral Pearls in Light topped with Bare Minerals Mineral Veil SPF 25.

    • Karen says:

Hey girlie! Are you still on your stay-cation? Hope you’re having fun. :)

      • Katherine G says:

Yup! Getting some bad storms around here now (it’s 10:30pm in MD), but went fishing this morning in the fiance’s motorized boat and had a blast. Thanks for asking :) Hope you have a great weekend, should be pretty nice (gonna be 80ish around here, what are your temps in San Francisco?).

  21. Sophie says:

I absolutely love the combo, it makes your skin look flawless and radiant! Also, I can’t take a normal picture to save my life so I feel your pain :)

    • Karen says:

      Hi Sophie,

It’s funny, there are certain tricks I’ve heard you can do to help snap into picture mode (like squeezing your butt cheeks…I’m so not kidding), but sometimes they just don’t work.

How Tabs the supermodel does it on cue is a mystery to me. ;)

  22. I’m loving the NARS TM – pretty amazing coverage for something so light and dewy! Your lashes look incredible btw:)

You look so radiant, Karen! I bought a sample of Mehron Foundation in Medium Dark 1. It’s a pretty good match for NC42. I also bought samples of Ben Nye Sheer Matte in Cine Tan, but it’s too beige for my yellow tones. :(

    • Karen says:

      Hi Chris!

I’ll have to check that shade out. I’ve been using St. Moritz in the center of my face and Cuba around the edges. Mehron sounds like it would be a good fit. Have you taken your sample for a test spin yet?

BTW — how are things? Were you able to find a foster home for your kitties?

  25. Kris says:

Karen I lurve your funny pictures, I think you look great in them. Not that you don’t look nice looking all ‘human’ but that’s just sooo normal, ya know what I mean?

Rather strapped for time lately, so its just MAC Studio Fix, NARS Desire Blush and Anastasis Brow Whiz for me and out the door. I am thinking of another compact powder, MAC one can look rather cakey for the first 2 hours or so until my natural skin oilies sort of blend into them?? am i making sense? LOL

Do you use a brush or sponge with the Hourglass Oxy Compact? Any other products from HourGlass worth a 2nd look? I get VERY distracted in Sephora if you allow free play. HAHA!

    Greetings from Singapore
PS: no NARS here in Singapore =( I feel like I’m in a 3rd world country.
