G’morning, my indigo girls and violet vixens! 🙂
You know what they say — Saturday mornings are made for sparkly purple shadows like Bobbi Brown’s new Metallic Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Starry Purple ($22).
I was so entranced by it this morning that I forgot to fill my first cup of joe, and believe you me, it takes something mighty fierce to make me forget my morning caffeine.
Pretty, yah?
It’s one of the eight shimmery cream shadows Bobbi released for fall.
I almost got lost this morning, star gazing into the pan of shimmery deep purple. Thanks to all the glitter — green, red, purple, blue and silver flecks — I think Starry Purple has enough personality to carry off lid looks without the help of other eye products, not that she wouldn’t also complement mascara and maybe even a set of false eyelashes.
I haven’t tested it for durability, yet, but I’ll let you know how it stands up to some daily wear this weekend.
How was your evening last night? Did you do anything fun? Let’s see… We stayed in, ordered pizza and re-watched the governator and badass Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2 for the ga-jillionth time.
Speaking of science fiction, is anyone else looking forward to James Cameron’s Avatar? Have you seen the new trailer yet? Some folks on Twitter are saying that they think the special effects look too “shiny,” as in artificial. I don’t know. I like what I’ve seen.
Hope you’re Saturday got off to a faboo start. 🙂 What’s the plan for today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Karen!! I watched the most magical of bad movies last night! It has a cult following it’s so bad. This 24 second youtube video gives you an idea of what it’s like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi_ioe64Z5k
I recommend it. Best seen with a group of people, or at the very least one other!
The shadow looks so pretty! Some reviews are saying the glitter is just too big and there’s a fallout problem, but I hope that’s not true!!!
Karen says
Hi Jenna,
LOL! That looks funny in an unintentional way!
I could see how the glitter might be too much for hardcore Bobbi fans, but it’s relatively mild when compared to MAC glitters. I think it could still be easily wearable. I haven’t tested it for fall out yet but will let ya know. 🙂
Happy Saturday!
Rebecca says
O: That is gorgeous! I’ve been looking for a shimmery deep purple eye shadow that I really liked for about TWENTY YEARS!
Okay, more like 6 months, but it feels like forever! Thanks Karen! ^_^
Karen says
Hi Rebecca,
Sure thing. 🙂 How do you feel about loose shadows? MAC has a really pretty pigment called Push the Edge right now that’s both shimmery, purple and deep. Here are a few pics and a swatch in case you want to check it out.
Happy Saturday!

I said it once and I’m going to say it again….I LOVE PURPLE…is one of my favorite colors and goes well with my green eyes( or is just my impression). Last night I was out with friend, about this night I’m not so sure what are we going to do yet.
.-= Tavia’s last blog post… Denim makeup – Saturday night makeup proposal =-.
Karen says
Hi Tavia,
I bet purple makes your eyes pop. 🙂
Hmm, do you have MAC Trax? It’s one of my favorite purples from the permanent MAC line.
Glosslizard says
Very pretty purple, I can’t wait to see how you wear it!
Last night was great, the imps were off at a sleepover so Hubby and I finally watched Zoolander and then the 1st two episodes of True Blood (I’ve seen them, Hubby hadn’t… he liked)! Such a relaxing evening, there’s nothing like a good (or guilty pleasure) movie night!
I saw the preview for Avatar when I saw Inglourious Basterds (*loved*), and it caught my attention, but I think I want to see a few more swatches before I cave! 😉
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
The show is *really* good. I like how it differs from the books but still manages to stay true to the story. 🙂
What’s the plan for the weekend?
shontay says
Hey Karen,
Bobbi Brown seems to be really popular, but I just can’t get into it. My mind is too preoccupied by Mac, Nars, Chanel and Makeup Forever. I love the drama that they bring. Bobbi Brown seems to be so natural and I’m not about that. LOL
Last night was kinda boring. I just surfed the net and watching a show about hauntings. I’m not a fan of James Cameron or Sci Fi so I’m certainly going to skip Avatar. This weekend, though, I’m trying to see “Inglorious Bastards”. Brad Pitt is awesome.
Karen says
Hi Shontay,
Y’know, it took me a long time to get on TEAM BOBBI. It’s very safe makeup for sure, but it’s always wearable — big plus in my book! In general, though, I prefer the drama that the other lines bring. 🙂
As much as I love Brad I’m gonna have to skip Inglorious Bastards (not big on Tarantino films). Eat some popcorn for me while you’re at the movies…
Nancy says
That “Avatar” looks so COOL! I’ve already written it down in my planner! LOL I can’t wait for it, but I’m a sci-fi junkie when it comes to movies like that anyway. Plus, Sam Worthington? YUM!! That purple looks pretty. I just placed an order to get that natural eye kit from Too Faced. Couldn’t pass it up, PLUS I finally found the 3-pack of lippies from Yes to Carrots at my Target yesterday, yay! I LOVE those. So easy and love the pigment. My sister and I saw “Julie & Julia” last night. A really feel good film. I thought of you, as one of the character’s began writing a blog. It was a fun movie…I just got back from Zumba class. I’ve got to clean up ’cause that class makes me S.W.E.A.T! LOL Have a great Saturday, Karen!
Karen says
Hi Nancy,
OOOH! Two things: I have still yet to watch Julie & Julia (still want to!), and I am dying to try a Zumba class! What’s it like?!? Is it fun?
Karen4 says
That purple shadow is gorgeous! May be too strong a look for me, though. Last night was mellow–did some work and then watched part of the memorial celebration for Senator Edward Kennedy. Funeral today was poignant and beautiful. My home state is MA, and I grew up knowing that this great man worked hard for the rights of our people and this country. I met him once–he was “larger than life”. What a presence! May he rest in peace.
Karen says
Hi Karen4,
Hope you’re weekend is still going well. Doing anything fun today?
Blovet Beauty says
I thought it was eyeliner at first sight then read on to discover it was actually a creme eyeshadow… i bet it looks stunning on the lids!
.-= Blovet Beauty’s last blog post… Hime Gyaru and Gothic Lolita Inspired Makeup Part 1 =-.

Hi Blovet Beauty,
You could probably use it as a cream liner as well. 🙂
Nancy says
Karen, Zumba is probably the most fun in the form of exercise I have ever tried!! I’ve been going to a studio mainly for my yoga and pilates (since February) and have always seen the Zumba class and was afraid to try. I sucked it up and tried it a month ago, and i am HOOKED! LOL I think I’ve got a permanent grin on my face the whole time, and I get an AWESOME cardio workout. Can’t get better than that, ’cause my cardio usually goes by the wayside with my workouts. Try it, I bet you’ll like it!
Karen says
Hi Nancy,
Oh it sounds like so much fun! I love doing classes for cardio — it makes it less painful, LOL!
I found a studio near by me that has classes. I will have to go soon!
Happy Sunday. 🙂

hi Karen,
It’s so friggin’ hot here on the Peninsula that I haven’t gotten going yet. I need to escape this heat! I’ll be going to a friend’s later to hang out and cool off, taking sandwiches to eat – too hot to cook! yesterday after work, I went to Stanford Mall to check out the makeups – I’m not a huge BB fan but may have to check out that shadow! I stopped at Sephora and scored on their discontinued lipsticks for $5 each! Got a backup of #29 (love it!) and 2 others – glittery and glossy, but fabulous. They are not in the fridge with my other creamy goodies. Today I’m just hanging out at a friend’s house to cool off and watch some vids.
Tomorrow I might go to see Inglorious Basterds, since the plot sounds good. I too am not a QT fan, nor Pitt, but I like this type of WW2 period movie. Hope it’s not too violent! I also plan to hang out at an indoor mall to cool off.
Karen says
Hi Singrsling,
Is it cooler ’round your way today? The fog is back up here in Marin county!
Kate & Zena says
Wow, that is one gorgeous purple. I’d use it as an eyeliner, honestly. That seems a bit too much purple for an all over eye look.
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
That would be very pretty. I’d love it with gold on the lid… yummy!
Tiffany says
Hey girlie, that shadow looks SO pretty! I have an unrelated question – have you tried stila smudge pots? I can’t figure out if they are gel eyeliners or cream shadows?
My Friday night was fun – I went out with the hubby for tapas and drinks. Today we went to a food and wine festival called corks and forks! It was a blast! What do you have going on today?
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
I love them! I use them more as cream shadows, but you can use ’em as gel liners, too.
You’ve gotta check out 24K from the Indian Summer release!
Tapas and wine sound so yummy right now… *drools*
Catherine says
Oooh, this actually looks really nice! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. I’ve seen reviews of some of the lighter shades that weren’t very good…
.-= Catherine’s last blog post… FOTD + Home Improvement =) =-.
Karen says
Hi Catherine,
I also swatched one of the light shades — Brown Metal — and wasn’t as wowed by it. It seems like the darker colors are the way to go!

Pretty indeed. I’d love to see how you’ll wear it, Karen.

That cream shadow looks sexAY. My coworker was rocking some deep purple mascara (near black) that looked mysterious. This has that smae quality. It’s got that Bobbi restraint with a little something extra. I digs.
re: Avatar = Dances with (blue alien) Wolves. Military guy goes “native”, etc. Everything and the kitchen sink. Space marines! Space Natives! Dragons! Fighter ships! Romance?!?
I was like “it’s too much, James”. Then I saw it was going to be projected in Imax 3D. FINE. I’ll probably be there opening wkd, just to see the technical spectacle.
Karen says
Hi Heyhey,
Do you know what color your co-worker was wearing? That mascara sounds intriguing!
LOL re Avatar! I’m gonna be all over that. As a hard core Terminator fan, James-money will always have a place in my heart.
ines + cha cha says
my plan for today is to get off my lazy butt and actually do an EOTD/FOTD for my blog… which i just did!
this shade of purple is absolutely gorgeous, i can see it working as a neutral even, like a slightly more purple navy!

Hee hee, yeah, I love the show and the books, and Hubby was so impressed by the show that he might just read the books as well! As for plans for the weekend… well, that was pretty much it! I don’t have any real plans until the NM beauty event comin’ up in a few weeks! 😀
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Just wait ’till you get to season two. The cliffhangers are CRAZY!
Marce says
Ah, purple, I love thee so. I agree, it’d look great alone and with other shadows too. If I had BB counters here, I’d go driving away to get one right away. Yeah, driving! Yesterday I got my drivers license, yipee! I’d been up since the break of dawn so I went to bed early yesterday…and today I went out with the car to visit some friends. Hehe I’m flaunting it bad =P

Hi Marce,
Congrats on getting your license! That’s a big deal. Drive carefully, now…
Rebecca says
hey again Karen! I usually opt for more neutral eyeshadows and save the neons and glitters for my eyeliners, but I do love Push the Edge… I might give it a try!
Karen says
Hi Rebecca,
I hear ya. That’s how I usually wear color too. 🙂
One cool thing about MAC is if you ask for a pigment sample they’ll usually hook you up (at least they do at Nordie’s). That way you can play with it at home first before deciding on a full jar!
Cassandra Rae Ferguson says
Whilst purple is not my absolute favourite shade, I must say that this product does look lovely – the hue is not-at-all gaudy. I love high-impact colour with a touch of class! Please let us know what the staying power is like; particularly as it is a creme…

Sure thing. I’ll be testing it out over the next few days!
Sugarcrumb says
Hi Karen,
1st up – love your blog for the fantastically frank and amusing reviews you do! and your cat is v pretty =)
like the others, i’ve been looking for a good purple cream shadow to use with all my purple powder shadow (i use them as bases cos i’ve got OILY lids) and this looks perfect. I was thinking about the purple grease paintstick from the upcoming MAC collection but have never used that before. Which do you think would be better?
thanks
Karen says
Hi Sugarcrumb,
I haven’t played with that product so unfortch I can’t weigh in on its staying power. Anything with the word “grease” in it generally makes me think it might not be the best thing for oily lids, but hey, you never know.
Have you tried Bobbi Brown Heather? It’s a fantastic cream shadow that works well as a base. Best part is it doesn’t move. Here’s a pic and some swatches!
mitzy says
Hi Karen,
I noticed ppl in Hawaii, they like to add the “yah” at the end of the sentence, lol….why is that? jus wondering…:)
Rebecca says
Ooh thanks for letting me know Karen! I’m headed to the mall tomorrow, I’ll have to hit up Nordstrom’s and see how that goes over!
Sarah says

Eeee! I just got those shadows in Goldstone (subtle gold) and Starry Night (a really gorgeous dark blue). I’m tempted to buy more, but I should be responsible. However, it’s not like I own anything quite like the pewter shade…
