Wearing the new Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy
I know there’s probably, like, eight billion degrees of separation between Chanel’s latest lippie — the new Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy ($32) — and the technicolor troubadour who crooned Karma Chameleon, but my inner ’80s child doesn’t care. When it comes to cheesy pop music makeup connections, I won’t be denied!
No, Chanel didn’t name this Boy after Boy George, but it sure would have been neat if they had. 🙂
So what’s a Chanel Rouge Coco Shine?
It’s one of 18 new colors in Chanel’s new line of shiny, hydrating lipsticks. Boy, one of the colors coming in the line, will make a special appearance at select Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus Chanel counters next week, between February 10-14 — just in time for the Big V. Then, after Valentine’s Day, the shade will be pulled from shelves until it returns with the rest of the collection this March.
Turns out the lippie takes its name from one of Coco’s lovahs, Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel, the wealthy English polo player who played a big role in Mademoiselle’s colorful life. It was Boy who gave her the funds to open her first shop, and his clothes that influenced her early designs (their boxy, masculine shapes). Legend has it he asked her to marry him, but she refused, wanting to wait until she became financially independent first. Sadly, Boy was later tragically killed in a car accident.
I stopped by Nordie’s today to meet Boy in person, and, ya know, I think it’s fitting that there’s a love story behind it, because the color feels très romantique!
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy
The medium-pigmented rosy pink contains the cutest flecks of golden micro-glitter, and it looks breathtakingly shiny and kissable on the lips. It could very well be the perfect date night lipstick — something worthy of a first kiss at the end of a great night.
This is my first rendezvous with a Rouge Coco Shine, and so far I like what I see. Boy feels smooth, like a thinner, slicker version of a Chanel Aqualumiere. It’s also non-sticky with a light rose scent and a very faint rosy vanilla flavor.
Speaking of the Aqualumieres, the Chanel artist I worked with today said they’re being phased out to make room for the new Rouge Coco Shines, so if you have a holy grail color in the formulation, now is the time to grab an extra; soon they’ll be going, going, gone.
The Shines come in packaging a lot like the regular Rouge Coco lipsticks, with the same kind of magnetic cap that snaps shut (don’t you just love that satisfying “click”?). The bullet, however, is a touch thinner and taller, which to me gives the new lipstick a more casual feel.
LOL, yes I’m in my car!
I only get about two solid hours of wear out of Boy, but that’s really what it’s designed to do, considering how light and thin it is. But, if you’re looking for a lippie to last through a movie and a meal, you might want to look elsewhere. Boy failed my Tuttimelon test today (drat!).
The shade is currently available for pre-sale at Nordstrom, and, according to the folks at the counter today, supplies are very limited. If you’re interested, you might want to act sooner than later.
I’ve got a crush on this Boy. He made a good first impression, and that’s always important. Sure, I wish he was a cheaper date, but I can’t wait to see more colors.
PRICE: $32

Onward to Wednesday!
I barely made it through my workout with Jillian this afternoon, whew! Since it sounds like some of you are interested, I’ll work on a review later this week (as soon as I recover from all of those burpies!).
Now I’m just making dinner — fish, rice and steamed spinach with lemon. After that I plan to get my Southland on with a few more episodes. 🙂
What are you up to tonight?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Karen says
I love it too!
Ariel says
Darn, I have to wait till March to get it– it won’t be available at my local store till then. Oh well, at least I have Chanel Nakkar Glossimer to wear on V-Day

I”ve been lusting after this since I saw it on the models at Chanel S/S 201. And by lust i mean *can’t sleep at night for thinking about this*.
Looks amazing on you thanks so much for the swatches.
Karen says
You’re welcome! Have a great night.
Appu says
This might be my first Rouge Coco 🙂 I just LOVE how it looks on you!
Karen says
Thanks, Appu. These are different from the original Rouge Cocos… hopefully you’ll like it!
Jess says
Oooh it looks soo pretty! I really hope I can get my hands on this 🙂
Karen says
Hope you can too, Jess!
Tracy says
Pretty! I can hardly wait for them to come to Canada!
Back in the 80s my friends and I won an Air Band Contest as Culture Club. Guess who was Boy George? Yup-me! We won $200 ! hahahaha
Karen says
How fun! What song did you guys play?
snoopysteph says
I’m really curious to see the rest of the shades – so I’ll be hanging tough til March. 😀
We’re currently having a thunderblizzarcane here in Chicago! It’s craaaazy outside.
Karen says
I’m sure they’ll be at least a few colors for you to fall in love with. 🙂
Can’t say that I’ve ever experienced a thunderblizzarcane! I hope your power stays on…
snoopysteph says
It’s quite an experience – blizzard with thunder & 70mph gusts of wind. We’re stocked with food, water, candles, etc. but I REALLY hope the power doesn’t go out. A friend of mine was stranded in his car on Lake Shore Drive (runs right along the lake’s coast here in the city) for 8 HOURS tonight. Snowmaggedon! 😀
Karen says
HOLY CRAP. What the heck did he do in his car for all that time?!
Rads says
Love it!!! Wonder if it will launch here before June :((
Karen says
Hopefully it will, Rads!
Kate & Zena says
I’m up to staying holed up in my house. We have a blizzard in my neck o’ the Midwest. I’ve never seen people here so freaked out. You’d think they were Texans preparing for an ice storm. It’s a blizzard people. It comes, dumps a ton of snow, then leaves. The only thing you have to fear is cabin fever.
I think I’m jaded. I literally freak out over nothing when it comes to weather here. Thunderstorms? Only freaky when the thunder rattles the house like an earthquake (you’ll see why). Tornadoes? Been through a million of them since I lived near Tornado Alley (read: Colorado). Floods and Flash floods? I got three words: Spring in Colorado. Particularly when you live near the mountains. Tumbleweed? Did it in Texas. Ditto with the dust storms and the extreme heat waves. Weathered a million blizzards in Colorado. The only weather I would ever freak out like a 3-year old would be earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruption and seismic waves. I was a Navy, Air Force or Marine kid; I was Army. Basically, I could live anywhere as long as it’s not a coastline or near a faultline.
Karen says
I heard you guys are having crazy weather!
I guess you don’t want to hear that it was warm and sunny today, and I was walking around in a short sleeve shirt…
Kate & Zena says
Oh no, I’m only a tad jealous……(she in pajamas, fuzzy robe and two blankets and still shivering)
Is is May yet?
Karen says
Haha. I wish we could fast forward to late spring/early summer!
Kate & Zena says
Well, ye ol’ blizzard is gone. My tiny itty bitty town of 29,500 has been transformed into a miniaturized, dysfunctional version of Colorado. I find it rather funny. I haven’t seen this since I’ve lived in Colorado.
Zena is rather perplexed by the whole thing. She tried going outside the box my dad shoveled in the yard and went flump into the snow. At least it was the shallow end of the yard and not the deep end or she would have been a goner. I would have had to get Dad to retrieve her!
sarah says
Me too. The Northeast is getting slammed constantly. I found it funny when someone I know said “I wish people would just look at how pretty it looks and stop complaining.” Coming from someone who never leaves her house for work or much else sure, but most of us have to drive to work which has been miserable…..a 20 minute drive took me 1.5 hours the other day. If you can stay home, no worries. But having to be at work (and with my job – no snow days) it SUCKS.
Amee says
Very pretty shade!!!!
Karen says
I know, right?
gio says
That’s gorgeous! Can’t wait!
Karen says
Me too!
Alison says
I’m really looking forward to these lippies, they will be perfect for spring/summer and this colour is top of my list. Do they contain SPF like the Aqualumieres?
Karen says
Hi Alison,
Hmm, let me check…
Alison says
It’s just that I find SPF in lip products makes my lips more likely to chap.
Advah says
It is SO pretty! (and yes to the satisfying ‘click’ hah)
Karen, any chance you spotted some peach/coral colour in the range? I’ve been looking for a winter version of my beloved L’Occitane summer lipstick, which has proven more challenging than I thought. But the micro-glitter and not-full-coverage of this one sounds like exactly what I’m after!
Karen says
Hi Advah,
This was the one lone tester that they had on site, unfortunately. Believe me, when the line comes out I’ll be searching for a good peachy coral!
Aparnaa says
Um, BEAUTIFUL. Going to Saks on Thursday for this!
Karen says
Hi Aparnaa,
I’m not sure if all the Chanel counters will be carrying the color, so you might want to call first to double check. 🙂
@PTTScarlet says
This is a lovely colour – not too garish, yet makes a statement! Love the fact it’s hydrating too.
Karen says
It is!
Kim says
It’s very pretty, but a bit too pink for me. On a separate note, I finally ordered my UD 24/7 in Yeyo today. We’re currently snowstorming. Thank goodness it’s not like Snoopysteph above – that sounds horrible. We’re just having a steady snowfall and expecting 16″ or so. It really is sparkly white and beautiful. 🙂
Karen says
Oh sweet! You have to let me know what you think of Yeyo once it comes in.
I bet it looks beautiful outside! Right now it’s sunny and clear here. It’s been unusually warm; yesterday I was walking around with a short sleeve shirt on.
Kim says
I definitely will! I have a feeling my comments for the next year will all include “I’m wearing Yeyo!”. 🙂
That’s great about your weather – I think it’s related to your swatching of all the spring collections. You’ll have to keep it up! 🙂
Michelle says
This is so gorgeous! I the promo ad where they had all of the colors — wow, I am going to want quite a few!
Karen says
Me too! At least a few pinks, corals and berries. 🙂
steph b says
I am so excited for these new lippies. I find the original Rouge Cocos to be far too drying even though I love the colors. I think these will suit me much better.
Karen says
Yay! I didn’t have any issues with this color drying out my lips… hopefully the other ones will be just as hydrating.
So, kinda off topic but did you decide what MAC Wonder Woman gloss to pick up?
steph b says
I haven’t decided yet. With colors this strong on pale skin and my own pigmented lips, I need to swatch. I’m hoping Wonder Woman looks good on me as my only other red is Capricious and I haven’t worn that in ages.
Lucie says
Though I’m sure these would be great for some people, I really hate glossy, sheer lipsticks and find this release from chanel disappointing. 🙁 I have one aqualumiere lipstick and really dislike the consistency and gritty pearly shine. I wish Chanel would come out with more unique colours for the rouge allure line; I like the regular rouge cocos but find them too glossy as well. Everyone raves about the rouge allure formula but none of the colours really call to me.
Karen says
Hi Lucie,
Have you tried the Rouge Hydrabases? I find the finish less shiny and more semi-matte. They’ve got three colors available on the Chanel website: Chanel Rouge Hydrabase Lipstick.
Nina says
thats a pretty pretty lipstick 🙂 i think i want it bec of the backstory behind it. so romantic!
last night – the hubs and i had dinner at the cheesecake factory (for lack of a better choice … ) …
he went home after dinner and i went to the wonder woman launch. it was fun … 🙂
not too much of a damage to my wallet, which im happy for!
Karen says
When we go to the Cheesecake Factory that’s usually the main reason (lack of a better choice). I do like the cheesecakes, though! Did you get any dessert?
Oh yah, how was the launch?
Nina says
surprisingly, i didnt get dessert! iono — the size of their cheesecakes scare me!
not as crowded as the villains launch … still pretty crazy though! i think its bec were having a weird cold spell w/ a chance of snow around these parts!
Chris25 says
You look so pretty, Karen! I think Urban Decay or MAC should come out with an 80s devoted line, named after 80s pop stars. Us 80s babies would buy it. I know I would.
Karen says
Thanks, Chris!
That would be awesome. I’d buy a color named after Madge in a heartbeat. 🙂
Emma says
Love that colour. It’s so pretty and wearable.
Faye says
*Hisses sharply* That will be miiiiine, preciousss!!!!
Seriously, it looks as gorgeous in your pics as it did on celebs at the SAG awards. Can’t wait to try this!
Meghan says
Oh that color is gorgeous!
mkdallas says
Wow, that shade is PERFECT for you! I’ve held off on the Rouge Cocos so far, but I’m thinkin’ I’ll have to pull the trigger on this one. That really is gorgeous!
Antonia at Swedish Love Affair says
I’ve been wanting to get my hands on this Boy ever since I saw the models wearing it at the Chanel fashion show! It’s a very pretty shade on you, Karen!<3
S says
The shade looks fabulous on you! I love how the name of the lipstick is a reference to Boy Capel. 🙂
Kara says
Hey Cutie, Great review. I am going to have to order it unseen since my local Nordies isn’t doing the Vday release….it seems to have a lot of purple in it on your lips. Is it a cool purpely pink IRL? Thanks! Kara
Cherie says
Wow, that colour looks fantastic on you! I wonder when it’ll be launched in Malaysia..
corinne says
Karen,
Is Boy similar to MAC HK Cute-ster?
