Hey, friend. How’s Wednesday treating you? Sorry if it seems like I haven’t been around as much as usual, especially in the comments, but I’ve been a little out of sorts. It started with a bad case of writer’s block yesterday, which I think I’m still recovering from. I feel much better today, but it still wore me out.
I feel selfish complaining with everything going on in the world, but who else can I tell if not you? Unless it involves gravy, Tabs isn’t concerned.
Even though I haven’t been able to express myself, I’ve been dying to tell you about some of the weird things that have crossed my path lately, like…
Comic Sans! You know how much I like typography, right, and can’t stand Comic Sans? Well, for some reason, I’ve been getting almost one e-mail per day written ENTIRELY in Comic Sans. Like, paragraph after paragraph of bold 18-pt Comic Sans, usually in violet, orange or pink. 🙂 I kid you not! The universe is having a free-for-all font field day at little old moi’s expense. It makes me want to laugh and barf at the very same time.
And then there’s this: apparently, I haven’t been paying enough attention to men’s fashion because somewhere along the way, the sh*t hit the fan. Not only are boys wearing Uggs now, but they’re wearing them with bedazzled booty shorts!
Technically, I believe they’re called “Brazillian cut” swim trunks with Swarovski crystals on the bum. Technically, that is (ha!). That’s according to Rockstar, the indie swimwear company that sells ’em for $89 a pop.
I could see the Jersey Shore guys making a go at these, but if El Hub had shown up to our first surfing date wearing spandex daisy dukes with bling on his bottom, my life would have taken a dramatically different turn. 🙂
Which blings us to makeup. Have you tried Thierry Mugler’s? They’re mostly known for their perfumes (remember Angel?), but they also have a full line of makeup. I haven’t tried any of their products yet, but I like the upscale mirrored packaging; I hope the products inside are just as great (review coming soon).
If you’ve worn the brand before and feel like sharing, please do. I’d love to hear.
Have a great night, and I’ll talk to you soon. Before I bounce, have you heard this Natasha Bedingfield song? It always puts me in a better mood. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Nina says
i never knew thierry mugler had makeup … i like the cubist feel of the products and how sleek the packaging is.

Okay, as a graphic designer, I share the same loathing for comic sans. It is so unworthy a font I don’t even want to dignify it by capitalizing. And yes, every time someone uses it, a pegasus no doubt loses its wings.
If I saw a guy in those hot panties I’d have excuse myself from the scene so I didn’t laugh out loud. For serious, indeed. That is just too much. And for $89!!!? You could get the same thing at American Apparel and bedazzle or whatever the bum for probably $20, if you were really so crazy about the look. Lawd.
Liz says
American Appeal would probably charge just as much without the bedazzling. Cotton tee’s for $22? Brazilian Cut shorts for $90 makes sense!
Allison says
I’m also a graphic designer who loathes comic sans — why the hell do people request that font?! One of the reps I work with writes “comic sands” on her paperwork. That’s always good for a laugh!
AK says
I could not tell you why on this green earth people request that font. I swear, if a client mentioned anywhere in their vision that they wanted comic sans, I’d have to drop the project altogether.
Not even kidding, while I was at the doc office today, I saw an ad for some garden company. Not only did they use PAPYRUS font (another loathsome font), but right underneath was…wait for it! Comic sans.
Siena says
twice in one go?! It’s hard to believe you could use even one of those fonts without guilt, let alone two!! I hate them all with such a passion. What I don’t understand is anyone who would willingly use that font in an advertisement without being tortured or in some way forced. Do they think it’s so ugly that it’ll HAVE to attract attention? please explain!!
Jenn says
Ha ha! Tabs has the same intense look of love & desire on his face that my dog gets when she sees meat (especially steak).
Natasha Heines says
Posts like this are why I keep coming back to your blog – fancy make-up, Comic Sans rants, AND crazy-sparkly man-butt!!!
Liz says
Whoa! I love the look of those lipsticks! And the blue color and dark one look awesome! I can’t wait for the reviews! (Yes, I am excited enough to use an exclamation point after the end of all of those statements..!)
Audrey says
OMG, LOL, your comic sans unicorn graphic is hilarious!!! Are you on Tumblr? Because that is totally something I would expect to see there. Who in the world is emailing you in comic sans??? Maybe if they were tweens, it would be OK.
And, I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never heard of Thierry Mugler – but the packaging looks really cute!
Hey I finally started up a blog now! Still want to guest for you again though at some point 🙂
Whitney L. says
Definitely not a fan of Comic Sans– something about it reminds me of middle school girls on AIM.
As far as Thierry’s makeup goes, I knew it existed (one of their reps told me a few years ago when they had a gift set with Angel and a blue lipstick), but I had not seen it in the US apart from that one time. Perhaps they are planning a larger roll out sometime in the near future.
Jessi (Lacquered, Painted, Polished) says
Aw Karen, I’m sorry you’ve been having a poopy week. We need the yucky times to put in perspective how awesome the good times are. I love your writing style; it is so fresh and unique. I would read an instruction manual on how to bedazzle men’s booty shorts if YOU wrote it. You should write a novel or ghost write Tabs’ memoir or something. I would be first in line to pick it up!
Jessi (Lacquered, Painted, Polished) says
Oh, I just thought of something. At least the “ROCKSTAR” on the guy’s booty wasn’t written in Comic Sans! That would be the stuff of nightmares.
dani@callitbeauty says
SAVE THE PEGASUS!
can’t wait to see swatches of the thierry mugler products! they all look fab 🙂
Coral says
My reaction upon seeing the booty shorts for guys was first silence in combination with a confused face. Then, I said out loud to no one in particular, that’s horrendous…and then couldn’t think of another way to describe that atrocity. I’m still shaking my head at it.

I just posted that in two spots on facebook. Thank you so much, it made me extremely happy!
Crystal says
If those booty pants weren’t $89 I’d get them for my husband. Having him open them at Xmas in front of everyone. I dream about stuff like that.
Melissa says
ha ha Crystal that’s cruel AND funny all at once!
Erin says
I did not know Thierry Mugler had a make- up line! That lipstick is cut so differently, it looks cool! And I’ll be interested to read about whatever that gold sparkly stuff is!
Jessica Leigh says
HA! I’m pretty sure every email I sent in 1999 was composed using comic sans. My tastes have evolved slightly since then. 🙂
Can’t wait to see the Thierry Mugler swatches – especially the dark lipstick.
Tracy says
Hahaha I can totally see the Jersey Boys sporting those bad boys!
Death to Comic Sans! That is your battle cry!
I hope you feel better! *HUG*
Amista says
The shapes of those lipsticks is amazing! Beautiful shades on all the products.
Vijaya says
I hadn’t heard that song, but it’s currently rocking my world. Thanks for the introduction. <3
MAUI says
I’m so curious about that blue-ish, purple-ish lipstick. I might just purchase it…….lol
AtelierGal says
Grr… I have that “Happy” song in my head, no thanks to it being featured at a store that I passed by in the last week. I can’t stand Comic Sans as well. No way will I ever use it!
Janet says
I hate Comic Sans too! I thought I was the only one… haha
Judy says
Comic Sans is awful! whoever created that font killed all the Pegasus in the world. haha
Wow, Thierry Mugler makeup, should try that out! Oh hun, i feel you feel better and what the fuss is wrong with boys underwear???!!!!!! :'( i hope my boyfriend never dares to even try that on! hahaha just kidding.
Heidi says
1) I’m also having a really lousy week, so let’s hope things look up for both of us soon
2) Natasha Beddingfield always puts me in a better mood. Pocketful of Sunshine is one of my ringtones.
3) The faceted lipsticks look GORGEOUS!
4) comic sans used by anyone that has graduated from high school is just wrong.
5) Something new to add to the list of Deal-Breakers That Would Put a Man Firmly in the NO Column: a bedazzled ass!
Karen says
It’s a deal breaker, for sure!
Kelthulu says
Karen, I hate to say this, but the first R in rockstar looks more like a C… which makes it only marginally more horrifying.
And Comic Sans – ugh!
BJoh says
Oh my goodness, that is HILARIOUS! And you are so right, only marginally more horrifying. Which, I think, is the most horrific part!
gio says
I didn’t know thierry mugler did makeup too, but the products look very interesting. Can’t wait to hear what you think of them.
Advah says
I didn’t know they did makeup! And that pot of gold glitter made my wee heart beat a wee bit faster – I could just stare at this photo all day..!
I hear you re Comic Sans. One of my pet peeves is hyper punctuation (one of my coworkers always sends emails with at least one ! at the end of every sentence.) and big, colourful, painful to read fonts when people are way too old (ie past 11) to do that. Sigh.
Hope you’re feeling better Karen 🙂 might be time to treat yourself! Spa and peanut butter cookies day perhaps? 😛 Give Tabs a squeeze for me, I hope he’s doing a good job looking after you when things get stressful!
Karen says
Ha! Hyper punctuation hurts me, too. Oh, and how about ellipses abuse? I once… dated a guy… very briefly, mind you… who used… way… too… many… ellipses in his emails…
Advah says
Yes! That and random commas, in the middle of a sentence. GAH.
As my friend once said, correct grammar is hot.
Karen says
It sure is. Smokin’ hawt!
Have you ever been to a Chipotle restaurant? Their menu has some funky grammar. It drives me nuts!
Kim says
Well, hello! I’m sorry to hear about your writer’s block. 🙁 I’ve only known Thierry Mugler for Angel, but I’m not super keen on the lipstick shape. On the positive side, I was reminded by googling that a 7-sided shape is a heptagon. 🙂
Men’s fashion is certainly taking a turn for the worse! I can see the late Freddy Mercury making a go of the bling Dazies and the Uggs (at the same time), but I don’t think this is going to be a good look for the average guy! HAHA!
PS I despise Comic Sans as well. And lastly, Tabs’ expression above reminds me of vampire Eric looking at Arlene’s kids like they were chocolate cake. 😉
Karen says
Freddy could so rock the blinged out booty shorts/uggs combo… you’d have to throw a cape up in there!
Kim says
HAHA! I have a mental picture and it’s actually no more disturbing than watching old concert footage! I really miss Freddie. 🙂
Amy Evans says
oh man that thierry mugler makeup is stunning!!! I need all of it 🙂 Looking forward to the swatches Karen
Karen says
I’m hoping to have the reviews up soon!
Tiffany says
I love posts like this! You never fail to make me laugh! I’ve heard of Angel but had no idea about the makeup line. And those booty shorts are redonkulous!!!
Karen says
Aren’t they, though? I mean, seriously. Guys with bling on the butt?!?
Annabella Freeman says
Aww Karen *Hugs and tea from the UK*. Maybe you need to get away for a long weekend with El Hub in the mountains with no laptop, minimal beauty stuff and just enjoy the fresh air, scenery, good food and quality time with the man you love.
Get Tabs to takeoever as editor for a few days!!!
Karen says
That would be fantastic. As much as Tabs is an attention hog, I don’t think he’s down for doing any actual work! We’ll see how he responds. 😉
JamieRebecca says
i LOVE comic sans… but i freaking geeked my mind out when i saw the pegasus loses its wings pic. alas i love it, but don’t send emails in it… well not this last decade. hahah
Karen says
Save the pegasus!!! LOL… well, I guess it would be less painful if you didn’t use 18-pt font and bright color.
Melissa says
I actually moved as close as I could to my monitor to look at the Thierry Mugler makeup (while trying to not look like a freak and worry my co-workers) – oh so pretty! Can’t wait for the swatches :-)…and thanks for the sparkly booty insight – this is why your blog and Facebook are the first pages I open in the morning 🙂 Have a great day Karen!
Karen says
You do the same, Melissa. 🙂
Chris25 says
Oh no, say it isn’t so! Bedazzled booty shorts? What’s next, rhinestone pedicures for boys? LOL.
The eyeshadow quads look pretty. Too bad I am on a no-buy. Is anyone attending IMATS in NYC?
Karen says
LOL… I don’t think I could handle El Hub with sparkly nails!
knownever says
OMG I’ve been waiting for high quality swatches of that gold lip wax for years (?).
Karen says
LOL… well, it’s coming soon. 🙂
NeenaJ says
I love the faceted cut on those lipstick bullets! The coral one is lovely.
Can’t wait to see the swatches.
As for fonts, I only have one I loathe: Tahoma. And that’s got nothing to do with the font itself, but rather the fact that it was exclusively used by an old coworker of mine who I couldn’t stand. Can you say transference??!!?
BJoh says
Karen, you are the best! I have always dreamed of being a writer, and you know what – I think I’m going to do it. When I tell people that I always have to preface with: “I know it’s crazy, and I know I’m going to starve, but I’m going to do it anyway! I also adore beauty products/make-up. When I’m stressed, I go to the store and buy myself some make-up (sooo unhealthy, but so wonderful as well).\
Anyway! Enough about me, I just wanted to let you know that you really inspire me. I love that you’ve put your love of make-up and your love of writing together. I’m sorry that you’ve been struggling with writers block. I feel like I’ve had a semester-long case of it. Is is one of the worst feelings ever! I hope you feel better.
P.S. I’ve been to many different beauty blogs and yours is one of the BEST. Better, even, than some of the magazine sites. You go girl!
Megan says
You know who we have to thank for guys and UGGs?
Tom Brady.

Wish I was kidding.
Donna says
That pegasus bit made my day, I tell you! Might I recommend a documentary entitled, “Helvetica”? I don’t know if you’re into documentaries, but if you’re interested in typography, graphic design, or just making the world around you look pleasing (amazing how many people aren’t, actually), you’d probably find it quite interesting. Let me forewarn you though, it is lacking in Rockstar gothic-type sparkly man cheeks.
Also, that comment you made about your ex-boyfriend really cracked me up! I don’t…have the addiction to…ellipses…mine’s… more of the… parenthetical variety(obviously 😉
By the way, nice to meet you, Karen (Tabs too, of course)! I recently subscribed and I’m really loving it–you have a superb writing ability, good-looking blog design (font-type included), quality photography, and a deep love for big cats (I have a big boy cat myself). Plus, you always come up with something that makes me laugh (thanks so much for that)! You’ve already given me some new ideas for products I want to try out soon.
Hope you & your boy, Tabs have a wonderful day!
Terri says
HI Karen,
I hope you’re having a better day! My week’s been rough too; I have way too much to do, and it feels like more things keep getting added to my list :(.
That picture of Tabs and his cat grass (and the accompanying caption) cracks me up – “Well, hello” indeed.

The Comic Sans Monologue……
I think you will enjoy 🙂
AK says
That is pretty hilarious. I can’t believe at the end the part about Papyrus. Because today I saw a business sign with Papyrus font and underneath? Comic sans. A multitude of pegasi instantly became lame white horses.
Emma says
I too am a comic sans hater. My mum loved to make signs with it when she worked at a school, sigh.
Okay, I’m really embarrassed, at first glance I read those shorts as saying C**kstar, erm, I was so horrified by the idea of them that I misread it.
Really annoyed today, as I rang up the place that we’re having our reception to check on some stuff and they now say they can’t offer us the room we booked because they’re renovating. That room was the only reason we booked the place! And their measly make-up to us is a free champagne toast. Ha, seriously annoyed right now and we’re getting more than a toast from them!
I hope that the rest of your week improves, Karen!
Lucie says
Are those strange heptagonal objects LIPSTICKS?? If so, I know what I’m using my birthday money for!
Melly says
Hi Karen,
I am a Thierry Mugler fan and not only love his makeup line but his frangrance Alien! I wear some of his makeup all the time as it is very long lasting. I think I have tried almost all the products! Most of them are nice but others are just UNIQUE and MUST haves! Call me crazy but I love to wear the eye liner cream and the magma fusion gloss to the gym! I don’t have to reaply the liner as once it dries it stays on the whole day! and the gloss is perfect as it gives my lips a rosy stained natural look! (and Yes! I am a latina who can’t leave the house without makeup;-)) Karen, you’re right! The mirrored packaking is really stunning and pretty to carry in your purse! I can go on and on and talk about all the other products I love but now I have to say “hasta pronto” as my baby is crying for some food…
and by the way, I am not only a makeup lover but makeup artist 🙂
Instant Karma (formerly L) says
LOL, did the emails come from 1999? That’s so weird.
LC says
I SOOOOOOO dislike Comic Sans too!!! =)
Kaelin Chan says
so much comic sans… everywhere. did someone pull a prank on you?
Karen says
LOL… or maybe someone pulled a prank on you? 😉
Maquiagens says
Great post Karen, this video is incredible… Natasha has an amazing face!
Mandy says
This is embarassing, but I read “ROCKSTAR” as something else that I don’t think I can type here… 🙁
Fixed on Fashion says
Wow – some great make-up in there from Thierry Mugler. And ROFL to the ‘Rockstar’ swim trunks. I wouldn’t be walking next to my bf if he wore them 🙂 — Jules
Vonvon says
The Thierry Mugler makeup looks so sleek and elegant. can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them. Love all the products you showed. And the blue lipstick….Wow!
