Before bed I like to surf for celebrity makeup inspiration online.
I’ll bookmark the looks I think I might like to copy and save them in a folder ironically titled, “Celebrity Makeup Inspiration.” 🙂
Last night I bookmarked this pic of Jennifer Hudson at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
Hello, hawtness! I love the black, gray and white eye she’s wearing. Soo sultry…
This morning I rifled through my makeup stash to see if I had dupes for a similar look when I remembered Urban Decay’s Smoke Out Kit in Sweet Lucy ($34).
It’s one of three Smoke Out Kits UD released for the holidays. This one’s all about the smokey eyes.
Each Smoke Out Kit comes with four powder shadows in coordinating shades, a mini 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero (a deep black), a mini tube of Skyscraper Mascara (black) and a tiny eye brush.
- Sweet Lucy: Blacks and grays for smokey looks
- Ju-Ju: Browns for neutral looks
- Yerba: Deep greens for colorful looks
Eyeshadows from left to right: a neutral tan matte and a cool white matte
Eyeshadows from left to right: a shimmery gunmetal gray, a shimmery blackish gray
From left to right: 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero (a matte dark black) and Skyscraper Mascara (a dark black)
I may start with a white shade on my inner lid, the shimmery gunmetal gray on my outer lid and the neutral tan in the crease.
Then, for a diffused, smokey look, I’ll line my upper and lower lashes with Zero, smudging the lines with the shimmery blackish gray shadow.
Add ample mascara and maybe some falsies — perfecto! 🙂
What do ya think? How would you put these shades to use?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I would wear the gray shade all over my lid with black on my outer corners elongating the outer V and pushed down to lower lash line and use the black on the crease as well. The brown shade to blend above crease. The white shade lightly dusted on the brow bone for highlight and applied on the inner eye corners too. For the upper lash lines I would use Zero 24/7 liner. To finish off the smokey eye, I would add a pair of faux lashes. I would also use the white to line my waterline to make the whites of my eyes whiter.

Oh my god — what a gorgeous palette! I’d use the shimmery gunmetal all over (including the lower lashline), then blend the white into the inner corner and the dark grey into the outer corner… pop some more white into the inner corner and lightly on the browbone, then finish it off the same way as you, with Zero on the waterline and falsies!
But, I have monolids, so it would turn out looking totally different on me than it would on you 😛

Lovely palette. I would use the gunmetal gray all over the lid, the shimmery black gray in the outer third of the lid and up into the crease. Above the crease I would use the tan matte and I would use very lightly the white shadow on the brow bone. Depending on how it looks, I might mix the tan and white together so it’s not too stark. I would line upper lashes, lower lashes and waterline with Zero. I would use my new favorite lashes, the MAC 44’s after applying a coat of Skyscraper.

what i love about this brand is how accurate their color reproduction is. what u see on the palette is so so so close to what u get on the skin. I just love these dark intense colors. makes for a sexy smokey eye!!

I love that palette too. Im slowly getting into palettes as opposed to single eyeshadows .. I would actually do a light wash of the black gray all over my lid an then pat the gunmetal color all over my lower lids. Then id highlight with the tan shadow as its closer to my skin color. Im leery of using white or super white shades for higlight.
Black liner + mascara and brows and im all set.
I choose to do it that way because I have a rather small lid area to work with – ive found that I cant do the traditional crease+outer v combo because theres not enough space to do it in.

It looks awesome. I love these colors.
I’ll tell you, as far as coveting awesome makeup looks, do you know who I admire? My 13 year old daughter!!!! She came in the bathroom today and her eye makeup looked FAB. She was wearing a Clinique cream eyeshadow that I had discarded out of a GWP that I deemed too frosty and purply for my eyes. But it looked great on her. Not at all like it did on me. I am seriously thinking about borrowing it from her to try again, or having her do my eyes. Is it that she is 13 and I am 40?
But this happens all the time, she can wear colors I can’t and the application is flawless. JEALOUS!

I’m loving Urban Decay more and more every time you post about them. I knew they had awesome eyeliners (and of course the Primer Potion), but now I’m totally lusting after the grey and black shimmery eyeshadows. A smoky eye would look awesome with those two, if you ask me 😀
