There’s just something magical about glitter, ya know? Something that reminds me of Tim Burton movies and Danny Elfman songs. And Urban Decay knows it, too. Even though I was dog tired from the day, I had to try on a few of the eyeshadows from the new Urban Decay Midnight Emergency Kit last night because the glitter made me do it. In a way, I didn’t really have a choice.
That’s Midnight Rodeo in my crease, AC/DC on my lids, Midnight Cowboy along my lower lash lines and Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Midnight Cowboy on my lips.
Now, is the glitter in these eyeshadows the kind that gets all over the place? Well, yes. It most certainly is, so I think it helps if you approach these shadows with that in mind. Whenever I use glittery shadows like these, I more or less plan to get glitter on my cheeks, nose and chin. It’s inevitable. Just like you can’t fight city hall, you can’t fight glitter like this, but I think you can do a few things to get along with it better.
Most of the time I’ll start with an eye primer to help the shadows adhere to my lids (a lot of UD fans their Primer Potion; I think NARS makes a really good one, too) and will do my eye makeup first, so I can clean up any fallout before I apply concealer, foundation, powder, blush and anything else.
My new favorite trick with glittery shadows, though, is one I gleaned from Wende Zomnir in the QR code video tutorials available through the new Book of Shadows Volume IV.
When working with super glittery eyeshadows, like Midnight Cowboy and Midnight Rodeo, Wende says she prefers to press them onto the lids with her fingers, rather than trying to do it with a brush.
I gave it a try last night, and I think it really did cut down on the amount of glitter fallout I probably would have seen had I used a brush.
Ah, glitter… You and I have known each other for oh-so-many years. Thanks for always being there when I need a friend.
You too, young lady. 🙂 I hope you’re having a nice Saturday so far and enjoying your day. Right now I’m just chillin’ here on the couch and watching the original Karate Kid on the DVR. I can’t believe this movie was made in 1984. Ralph Macchio looks like such a baby in it, but I think he was something like 23.
Good times.

My trick when working with glitter boms like Uzi and Midnight Cowboy is to use a sponge tipped applicator. It catches most of the glitter. I’ll then use a piece of bandage tape to take off any glitter fallout on my cheeks.

my glitter trick is to put a piece of toilet paper, a tissue, a subscription blow in card, or something like that over my cheek just under my eye while i apply. that way the glitter falls there, instead of my face, and i’m good to go.

Great tips for applying the glitter shadows. I’ll definitely be trying the finger application technique with one of the Nuance shadows I got recently. It doesn’t have chunky glitter, but lots of fairy dust type glitter that falls out onto the cheeks. Sometimes that’s a nice look, but not always appropriate.

Great tips! I rarely wear glitter eyeshadows. Will keep this in mind when I do use one.

I hate Midnight Cowboy with all my heart and I really don’t understand why UD puts it into every palette (and MCRA which is even worse) and even creates palettes especially for MC. The problem with these eyeshadows isn’t so much the immediate fall out, I can deal with that, clean it up, but the gradual fallout over the course of the day. I wore Midnight Rodeo the other day and I had glitter all over my face after a while. 🙁

Agreed. I wish they would dedicate these sorts of kits to some of there other beautiful shades. How about a baked palette or ransom. Those just happen to be my favorite but seriously I think midnight cowboy is the worst shade that they make!

That’s a great tip! I’ve recently discovered the amazing Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy for glittery shadows- it holds onto them like anything else and I now use it for anything even mildly shimmery.

I find glitter irresistible, and I can cope with the fallout during application. It’s the fallout over the course of the day that bothers me.

Meh,
Thumbs down on this kit for me, but might be nice for a Gift.
