The Estee Lauder Mad Men Collection, and a Letter to Don Draper

Dear Mr. Draper,

Thank you so much for your kind note! It’s always so nice to hear from you.

As you know, I’ve served as head of West Coast operations here at Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC, for five years now, and while I currently love what I do, I feel it soon may be time for a change. Your recruiter couldn’t have picked a better time to contact me.

I’m so flattered that you and your team believe that I should be the person to take the new International Pet Modeling/Gravy Division at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce to the next level.

I had my lawyer skim through the contract you sent over, and I have a couple of quick questions.

First of all, how flexible are you on the requirement that all employees drink during the day? I understand if it’s part of the corporate culture, but I’m something of a teetotaler and have a difficult time functioning even after a small glass of wine. If possible, I’d like to remove that clause.

Also, I must insist on having my own office and assistant. I was informed that Ms. Olson’s desk is located near the employee break room. I do not know how Peggy feels about that, but such an arrangement would not work for me.

If I do accept the position, I would also like to be able to invite friends of mine to the office from time to time, like Cherry and Evening Rose. Both are part of the new Estee Lauder Mad Men collection. Not only are they very familiar with your work, but I would go so far as to call them admirers of yours…

On a more personal note, I hope we can overlook that time in your office when I rebuffed your advances. I truly forgive you, Don. And yes, in case you were wondering, I’m still happily married to the same guy, and things are going great.

Send the kids and your new wife my regards.

The Estee Lauder Mad Men Collection

  • The two-piece limited edition collection features a Lipstick in Cherry ($25) and Creme Rouge in Evening Rose ($40).
  • Both pieces strut on to Estee Lauder counters exclusively at Bloomingdales stores and esteelauder.com next month.
  • The pieces are inspired by the women of Mad Men, which is set in New York City in the 1960s.
  • My typographically-obsessed self totally loves the boxes! Designers took vintage Estee Lauder packaging from the 1960s, and gave it a modern twist.
  • How adorable is the tiny tube of Lipstick in Cherry!? Too cute!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

  6. Heather says:

Very pretty! Love the colors and the packaging, and I love how you put it all together so well! Do they last a long time on the cheeks and lips? Would you say that these are worth their price in terms of qualify and wear time?

On a side note, I hear that Sterling Cooper isn’t too flexible on that day-time drinky policy – hope they give you a break though! : P

    • Karen says:

      Hi Heather,

I got great wear times and pigment with both, but the cream blush might be tricky if you have very oily skin. It’s very slick, so it can slip off. I have dry cheeks and didn’t have any problems.

For this collection, I think most of the price has to do with the vintage-inspired packaging. Yes, you’re paying for looks, but the products also deliver.

  7. Katie says:

Oooh! You look so lovely with the bright yellow, the BEEHIVE, the eyeliner, and the amazing lip color. I need to channel my ’60s look one day!

This makes me ecstatic for the show to return again.

  8. Wendy says:

I love how you styled your hair! So pretty!!!

  9. Nina says:

i LOVELOVELOVE the boxes too. i imagine the font to be on an invitation to a really fancy soiree where ladies sip afternoon tea and nibble on scones and crumpets!

so … i like the color of the blush, but i wish they didnt make it a cream formula … while i do like some cream blushes, EL cream blushes are untested territory for me.

i might pick up the lipstick. but so tiny! :-)

    • Karen says:

Oh, totally! Now I want scones, lemon curd and a huge pot of darjeeling tea.

I quite like this formula. It’s a little slick, though, so if you’re very oily you might need to set it.

      • Nina says:

ive always liked my tea with a bit of cream and sugar …. my current fave is english breakfast.

        can we wear hats? :-D

ahhh nice to know. im not oily on my cheeks (t-zone is another story altogether) … but in the summer this formula will totally disappear after a few hours in the humidity. :-/

  10. Karen you look GORGEOUS with your hair up and the winged liner on your eyes! You should do your look like this more often!

The packaging of these products is really pretty and luxe….I’m just not a fan of the price tag. I do like cream blushes though so I might have to give in!

  11. Rads says:

Love the packaging…and your photos :)

  12. Paris B says:

Ok, I’m NOT normally a sucker for packaging, but seriously, these are gorgeous! This reminds me of cosmetics I would find in my mom and grandma’s purses…oh, memories! Also, I’m so loving your hair and necklace in these photos, such a great look and a look I find myself falling back on when I’m wanting to look elegant AND sexy. :)

Lovely set! I hope the next one will be for redheads!

  20. J.Q. says:

I love the packaging of the Mad Men collection and I totally agree that the typography on the boxes are absolutely stunning, but the names of the colors could have been a bit more creative. I’m a total Mad Men fan and think that instead of calling the red lipstick “cherry”, Estee Lauder should have named it “Belle Jolie”. Anyway, I think you look amazing in this post Karen! Also, I can totally imagine you rocking this retro look with some cat-eye glasses, in a tea party setting and munching on savannah smiles with Tabs sitting on your lap. LOL ;)

Would you say the lipstick is on the warm or cool end of things? I’m pathetically unable to spot undertones when I look at colours..

  24. artemis says:

    omg, cherry looks delicios :D

  25. NeenaJ says:

Love it! I’m afraid of the lipstick, but your letter was awesome. :)

Btw, I thought of you the other day when I felt I looked very pale and needed some lip color. I have a sparkly Avon gloss in Apple Cinnamon that I wear pretty often. I realized that, though it’s not a bold red or anything, it’s kind of a darker shade and you might be proud. You can check it out here: http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.aspx?pf_id=37553

Which isn’t where I got it. I won it from my fave blog a couple of years ago. :)

  41. Sherry B. says:

Late to the party, as usual (fashionably so, of course)! Just want to say that you look so gorgeous in this entire look. Wish I could afford this set!

  42. Sarah S. says:

  43. Oh you look so elegant in that ensemble, Karen! Wait, what? No more bangs?
