Lancome’s got a video on Youtube celebrating Pixel Pink Color Fever Shine lipstick, the limited edition shade created for fashion designer Thankoon Panichgul’s Spring 2008 runway show. While the entire video is an interesting insight into the inspiration behind the lipstick and the backstage goings-on at NY Fashion Week, my favorite parts are the animated sequences of “moving paintings” by experimental filmmaker Jeff Scher.
Still shots of Jeff’s moving paintings
There’s a segment at the beginning when Thankoon talks about what inspired the Pixel Pink shade (it starts at the 00:52 mark and runs through about 01:12) where you see the first animated series of Jeff’s paintings. They’re brightly colored, with vivid blues, greens and reds, and tell the story behind Thankoon’s muse, a carefree girl who ditches her job and moves to Hawaii to hang out, surf and to wear pink lipstick. Um, hello, Thankoon — that’s like, my life dream.
(Note: This video is only about 3 minutes long, not the 9 minutes reflected in the player.)
I love the video sequence in which the paintings change in rapid succession and the one with the Jeep (complete with surf boards in the back) driving over the Haleiwa Bridge on the North Shore of the island of Oahu:
… and here’s the real life Haleiwa bridge!
The bridge shots lead into a sequence in which Thankoon’s muse goes surfing. I so want to be this girl!
I’m purchasing my tube of Pixel Pink online from the Lancome Web site, but if you can’t wait for online delivery, you can also get it from Lancome counters at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus department stores, or at one of the five Lancome boutiques nationwide. And then there’s also ordering by telephone. To do it you’ll need to provide your credit card number and address over the phone. Here are numbers to the five U.S. Lancome Boutiques:
- Manhattan, New York: (212) 362-4858
- The Mall at Short Hills, New Jersey: (973) 258-0790
- Northpark Mall in Dallas, Texas: (214) 750-9364
- Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, California: (408) 244-8334
- Brea Mall in Brea, California: (714) 671-0267
Let’s just drop everything and head to Hawaii next week. Come on, the warm tropical breezes, the white, sandy beaches, the hot surfer dudes… YES!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

great site!
just curious…..pixel pink is only available in US? do you know if it’s coming to canada?
Holly says
Im with you Karen…booking my flight right now!!!
I saw the cutest bikini yesterday too, perfect for watching the surfers, not so perfect for surfing in! But that would mess up my makeup anyway so I think I will just soak up the rays and watch from the beach!

I took a break from college and lived on the North Shore for three months last summer. It was THE BEST time of my life. If anyone needs a little R&R, just head to Hawaii for a week and let your troubles fade away. I love the pics of Haliewa- such a cute little town with great food and shops!
Glosslizard says
Oh, I wanna go! I was in Hawaii for 24 hours once (a layover on the way to Australia for our honeymoon) and I’ve been yearning to get back ever since! Bright prints and tropical makeup! Wheee! I’ll stick a flower in my hair and brave looking like a total fool learning how to surf! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Evo,
Happy Friday! Pixel Pink is a US launch only, so it won’t be coming to Canada. And unfortunately the Lancome boutiques can’t ship internationally, boo.
Karen says
Hi Holly,
That’s cool! You can stay on the beach and look hot and watch our stuff when we go surfing. That way your makeup won’t get messed up and hopefully you’ll meet a hottie that you’ll want to marry so we can all finally go to that wedding that we’ve been planning, LOL!
The resort/beach wear stuff is starting to show up here too. I love swimwear and bikinis and have one too many surf bikinis in closet, ha! My favorites are by Ocean Pacific and Lucky Brand Jeans…now if only I could wear them here without a wetsuit, LE SIGH!
Have fun dancing with your girls tonight – what makeup are you gonna wear?
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
I love Haleiwa. I got married on the North Shore two years ago so it has a special place in my heart, too.
Did you ever eat at that Thai food place, Haleiwa Eats? I love their yellow chicken curry bowl!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Surfing is SO MUCH FUN that it doesn’t even feel like a workout to me. If I could I’d surf all day every day…El Hub and my family joke about me being part mermaid because I love being in the water.
For some people I easy but for me it was hard at first. But a few years ago something happened during a trip to Hawaii where I just “got” it. I still can’t do anything cool (I’m limited to standing up, turning left or right, and then falling off, ha!) but I love it.
If you ever go to Oahu be sure to take surf lessons with Hawaiian Fire. I interviewed these guys for a travel story and hung out with them…they are super nice and it doesn’t hurt that they’re easy on the eyes.
Holly says
Hi Karen,
Im not going out anymore 🙁 one of the girls had to cancel so we said we would leave it until another night so im a bit sad!!
Never mind, I have to look on the positive, with the money I save I can buy something pretty tomorrow!!
speaking of watersports, my friends and I have booked to go to an amazing festival this summer called Wakestock which is a combination music festival and huge wakeboarding competition! Its in a beautifyl bay in Wales, not quite Hawaii but I love it! Im being very brave as its 4 nights camping but we have booked VIP tickets so at least I will be able to use clean toilets and have a shower!!
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
I’m sure I would love surfing, I just won’t go in the water around here… waaayyy too cold for my blood! I’m sure I would be a total spaz trying to surf, but I’m game! Maybe my mad aikido skills will kick in and help me keep my center! Heh!
As long as those Hawaiian Fire guys wear shades so they won’t be blinded by my shockingly pale self (my skin just doesn’t do the tan thing!), it’ll be great! 😉
Glosslizard says
Hi Holly!
Aaw, sorry about your girl’s night! You can have a virtual girl’s night with us instead! Just imagine us all with our best virtual dance clothes and our flirtiest e-mascara and we’ll all boogie down to something hot in our computer chairs! 😛
Yay! Wakestock sounds fun! Clean toilets and showers rule!
Holly says
Hey Glosslizard,
Yey our virtual party will make me feel much better! And that way I still get to buy more makeup with the money I save too !! Its win win 🙂
Im so so excited for Wakestock, im already beginning to formulate my festival chic wardrobe! Im currently ordering some Hunter wellington boots! Im not sure if you have them in America its a very old fashioned English brand which has got cool again!
I am going to have to work very hard to find a way to make my hair cute without my flat irons though! Im thinking Bumble and Bumble surf spray may be the way forward but im yet to try it out!
The decent shower and toilet facilities are are must, camping really isnt my thing but im hoping I will brave it well in the VIP area! They even do a BBQ every night so as long as I have my food and a good spot at the bar i cant fail to have fun!!
Glosslizard says
Hi Holly!
Ugh, camping hair! I haven’t tried the B&B spray, but I have used Frederick Fekkai’s Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray. I have long, naturally curly hair that can look like a disaster of brunette cotton candy, and I love this stuff! For lazy days a few spritzes and some finger-combing make my hair look tousled and messy-on-purpose instead of just messy! Whichever one works for you, I think you’re on the right track!
I’m sure you’ll be fine and have a great time! Be brave! 😉
Holly says
Hi Glosslizard,
Thanks for the tip off I may try to get my hands on some of that stuff if we have it over here. My hair sounds pretty similar to yours except im blonde, all the years of straightening have made it go kinda frizzy if I dont blow dry it though so it does need some product to work well curly these days!
Amanda P says
Hey Karen,
Yes, I love Haliewa Eats! Mmmm anything they make with coconut suits me just fine. Along with Kua’aina Burger, they are one of my fav places to eat on the North Shore. But I really shouldn’t be talking about Hawaii because I’m in Utah where the weather is not comparable and my heart aches for the ocean.
So to beauty- I am a fellow MAC lover, but lately the lip glasses have been disappointing me. I adore the lip gelee and am probably semi-addicted to it, but the glasses are so-so. I’ve found that Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss is basically the bomb. It’s extremely shiny, doesn’t feel sticky, stays on forever, and smells amazing (mocha, passion fruit, Yum!). Have you been into Vic’s Beauty section lately? I must say they have stepped it up in cosmetics. While not everything is up to the caliber of MAC, I did find a good sparkly eye trio, and of course you gotta love the perfumes.
How was your night with the girls? I went 80’s dancing with some of my Australian friends from work and it was a blast. I dressed up in full 80’s nerd getup- high neon pink athletic shorts held up by blue suspenders, huge black-rimmed glasses, and a flock of seagulls hair-do. And I did not forget the bright pink lip gloss (Victoria’s secret). I wish I could hook you up with a picture in this comment box!

You girls are cracking me up. I was like checking out the pixel pink color…and everyone is talking about Hawaii. 🙂 I’ve never been to Hawaii…the Caribbean is more accessible from here…I’m sure I’ll make it someday. Actually I was just talking to one of my girlfriends because two of my closest friends (there are 4 of us who are very close) are turning 30 this year…so we are taking a trip together. Right now we are still deciding where to go – we aren’t going until December but I’m psyched already. I think we are going to end up in Mexico or Puerto Rico this time. I’m also supposed to go back to Grenada this summer to visit another friend…so that will be exciting too. All this talk to making me want to go on vacation now…:-)
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Shockingly pale won’t be a biggie for them…I think they’ve seen and heard everything. I remember one of the owners told me that once, somebody came to a lesson, and it was the first time they’d ever been in an ocean!
I’m sure you’d be great at surfing. Balance plays a big part! And I agree about the water here. I went through a phase where I tried to surf here and after less then a dozen attempts I quit. I don’t like wearing a wetsuit (makes me feel like a sausage in a casing). The worst part is when you fall off your board for the first time and get your hair wet in the cold ass Nor Cal water…and then it drips down the back of the wetsuit….ewww.
Karen says
Hi Holly,
You rock, girlfriend. I am so not into camping…even when running, warm water is involved. You are made up of heartier stock than I, LOL. I don’t like being dirty and inevitably I end up finding the one spot in the tent where there’s a big ass sharp rock that pokes me in the back all night.
Anyway, the festival sounds like fun, though! Do you know what bands are playing? And are ya gonna participate in the wakeboard part?
Karen says
Oh Holly – forgot to mention earlier that the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray is good – just don’t overdue it because it can be drying, especially if your hair is colored.
Karen says
Hi Amanda P,
Kua’aina Burger! I still haven’t eaten there. I usually go to Haliewa Eats and then walk down the street to Matsumoto’s for a lychee shave ice (with ice cream and those weird red beans!). You are so lucky to have lived there for awhile. Do you think you’ll go back any time soon? I hope so! Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be back until the summer, and I’m already thinking about what I want to do…snorkeling in Shark’s Cove is at the top of my list (along with surfing, of course).
I’ve tried a few VS Beauty products…I dig the glitter eyeliners, and I’m not a big glitter gal, either, which says a lot about the product. Give them a look next time you visit!
Dancing was AWESOME. I went with my two favorite dance buddies and I worked it out on the dance floor to some amazing 80s and 90s hip hop. It was so great. I haven’t been out dancing in a long time (been working a lot!) and it reminded me how much I love it. The best part was that there was no cover (!) and I barely had to spend anything on drinks (I’m not a big drinker) so the night was practically free except for the 9 bucks I paid for the parking garage. Gotta love cheap entertainment that also burns calories.
It sounds like you had a lot of fun at 80s night with your coworkers- and LOL, your costume sounds totally cute! That’s cool that you can go out with them. I mostly work by myself now, so I kinda miss having cool co-workers to do stuff with. Anyway, I hope you are having a good weekend so far! Aloha, brah!
Holly says
Hey Karen,
Oh no I am so not into watersports or in fact sports of any kind! I drag myself to the gym but only because I love food too much not to!
Thanks for the advice on the surf spray I am definately going to give it a try! Im so glad you told me about how drying it can be though, I cant have it messing with my highlights!!!
Karen says
Hey Holly,
You’re welcome! One thing that saved my highlights last year during vacation was this product from Federick Fekkai called Summer Hair Zero-Humidity Frizz Control. Have you heard of it? It’s a spray in an orange bottle that keeps frizz away that also has UV protectors in it for your hair. It was $20 and came out in the beginning of the summer here and half way through the season it was sold out all over the place. I haven’t seen it on the shelves since. If they bring it back this summer I’m going to stock up!
Holly says
Hey Karen,
I had actually not heard of Fekkai at all until Glosslizard reconmended it to me but have found out that they sell it in space NK so I will have to go and have a look!
I may get both and have a few trial runs before I go on my trip! I will probably end up washing my hair in a sink or something because i cant imagine that even the VIP showers will be too hot after a few days of mud! But I WILL find a way, there is no way on earth I can not wash my hair for 4 days!!! I will be taking lots of dry shampoo though, that stuff saves my life when its windy and my hair goes yeucky!
Karen says
Hi Holly,
OMG – dry shampoo is the SH*T!!!! I can’t live without my Naturia, seriously. I have wavy hair but if I wear it straight then this stuff extends my blow out for at least a few days. What brand do you like best?
Holly says
Hi Karen!
I know! It saves my life when i wake up late and dont have time to wash my hair, like this morning actually haha! I always have one on the go and a backup in my cupboard!!
I use a really cheap one called Batiste which is like less than 2 pounds a can! I have tried a few more expensive ones like the bumble and bumble hair powder and one by Lee stafford but they haven’t come close to my cheap one! They have now started making it with a tropical scent too so i smell like coconuts!!
Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net says
Yes, please 🙂 I’ll be here waiting.
