Nope, not cupcakes and pies; I’m talking about baked eye shadows.
Unlike regular pressed eye shadows, with their flat, even surfaces, baked eye shadows rise up out of the pan like shimmery muffin tops.
If you’re a fan of shimmery long wear eye products, browse through the selection of baked eye shadows now available at Sephora. Baked shadows are generally more water resistant than regular pan shadows are, and many boast shimmery satin finishes.
Before applying baked eye shadows, first prime your lids with a base like Too Faced Shadow Insurance or MAC Shadestick in Shimmersand. Using a base helps make eye shadows last longer.
Once your lids are primed and ready, use a flat shader for the entire lid, a tapered crease brush for detail work, or a dual-tipped brush like the Stila #30 Double-Ended Shadow Brush ($32), which has both kinds of brush heads.
Here are a few baked eye shadows that recently caught my eye:
Stila Eye Shadow Trio, $26
Pictured above, from left to right…
- Old Glow – gold, bronze, ivory shades
- Bronze Glow – rose, gold bronze, ivory
- Champagne Glow – taupe, burgundy brown, champagne
Baked in a terra cotta disk, each pan of these sheer, shimmery shadows houses three different shades. All can be used wet or dry.
For a quick and easy daytime look, choose one of the multi-colored pans and brush the lightest shade over your entire lid. Then, apply the medium shade in the crease. Finish the look by wetting an angled eye brush and using it to apply the darkest shade as a liner.
Too Faced Galaxy Glam Baked Eyeshadows, $19.50
Pictured above from left to right…
- Moon Beam – black with light green
- Deep space – black with cobalt blue
- Shooting Star – black with galactic gold
- Super Nova – black with peach and pink
Too Faced baked Italian opalescent pigments into each of their black domed shadows for that “galaxy far, far away” look. When mixed together, the shades create a shimmery blend of black and green, blue, gold or pink.
I like these a lot. They’d make great shimmery smokey eyes with a twist of color. For an easy smokey eye, layer eye shadow on top of a creamy, blendable eyeliner like MAC Smolder. A dark, creamy eyeliner helps exaggerate the smokey effect.
Lorac Starry Eyed Baked Eyeshadow Trio, $24
From left to right…
- Starlet – pink pearl, muted plum, dark purple
- Evening Star – silver, gray, dark gray
- Superstar – golden beige, golden tan, bronze
Create shimmery eye looks with the three color-coordianated shades in each Lorac Starry Eyed Baked Eyeshadow Trio. Apply them dry for a natural look or wet for an intense, dramatic effect.
I’m off to go running! What are you up to today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Those are really pretty. Did you get anything at Sephora yesterday?
I am off to a housewarming party in Sonoma Hopefully it won’t be too terribly hot up there.
Have a fabulous Sunday!

I’ve looked at the too faced shadows several times online (but not in person), and am very intrigued by them. I agree that would be good for smokey eyes. And the marbling reminds me of mac’s minerilzes. Another baked brand I’ve looked at online but never tried it Laura Gellar.
Other than the normal weekend chores (laundry, cleaning, etc) the hubby and I want to try to golf, but it’s stinking H-O-T, so not sure if we will end up motivating ourselves or not, LOL.

Le Cupcake! Is that my favorite red velvet? Those two are so beautiful! Now let me wipe off the drool 😀
Baked eyeshadows are really old skool to me since my mom used to have some back in the day. I think she got a blush from Bourjour Paris that lasted forever and was so pigmented. And the jar was tiny. Too bad Sephora is doing a house cleaning on that brand because its products are truly fabulous.

You’re killing me with the cupcake! It looks far too good.

Hmmmmm I want that cupcake now!!! Gah. And I’ve been so good food-wise today…
I do fancy some of those stila trios…

Hey Karen! I’ve had my eyes on one of those LORAC trio’s for a while now. I should bite the bullet and get one!
This weekend went by way too fast. I didn’t do much today – just went to the movies and saw Wanted. How has your weekend been?
Elle says
Those Stila trios are awesome. I like them better than their regular eyeshadows (never really jumped on the Kitten bandwagon…). The gold glow one is my favorite, and I also have the bronze glow trio.
I caved and got a few new MAC items from the ElectroFlash/Sonic/New View line (I was being bad, I wanted to hold off until Cult of Cherry but I guess that didn’t happen). Got the new Mineralize skinfinish duo (might return it though, since my current foundation has SPF and this one doesn’t, and I was planning on using it as a foundation since–knock on wood–my skin has been decent and breakout-free lately), two eyeshadow duos (Play on Plums and Two to Glow), two blushes (Love Thing and Gentle, might go back for more though and turn into a crazy blush lady :)), and the Li’ Hot Pepper lipglass. I like everything so far–the MAC MA made me laugh because she’s like “These blushes go on so sheer!” and piled on a TON of it at first, making me look like I had a rash, and said “Uhhh I guess your skin picks up a lot more color than I thought!”. 😉 The blushes are definitely great…especially if you are a fan of blushes with gold pearl in them. I like them a bit more than the eyeshadows, and the lip products this time around are kinda ‘meh’. I do like the lipglass, though, but everything else was underwhelming to me.
Ooh, and Karen, quick question…do you have an opinion on the Fix + spray? Have you ever used it? The MA was a little overzealous and I went ahead and got one, but don’t really know if I need it/will ever use it. Just wondering what your thoughts were! Thanks and have a good Sunday post-run night 🙂
Elle 😉

I’m kind of into the whole baked makeup idea. I have the Laura Gellar bronze and brighten compact and love it. I use some of the shades as eye shadow, too. They just feel so smooth but gives you good color. I’m interested in trying out some of the brands you mentioned here.
It’s a double edged sword not having a Sephora around. I can’t go there to try stuff, but I also can’t go there to buy a ton.haha So it’s good and bad.
Today was a lazy day. Worked on a new blanket(Oh goodness, I’m creating a sweatshop for myself!!) and I saved a dragon fly. It was pretty cool.haha Going out soon, hope your run was refreshing!

Hi Marisol,
Nope, it was more of a window shopping trip. 🙂 Sometimes I just like to go to play!
I hope you stayed cool and had fun at the house warming party (and that they had good stuff to eat, LOL).
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
I dunno why but the Too Faced ones really appeal to my inner sci fi geek! They are just so spacey!
How hot is out around your way? I hope you guys have air conditioning. It was in the 80s here (hot for us)…
Karen says
Hi Dao,
Yeah, it is. 🙂 I’ve only used Bourjois mascara in the past; it was a few years ago but I remember liking it. Did you end up getting anything from the sale?
Karen says
Hi Loni,
LOL, I could probably eat five of those in one sitting. YUM!
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
It’s tempting, yes? 🙂 I haven’t been so good food wise, but there’s always tomorrow…
The Stila trios are very pretty in person, and they have *lots* of shimmer.
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
How was that movie? I kinda want to see it because I love Angelina.
My weekend has been mellow. It’s going to be a busy week for me so I’ve been trying to get ahead; somehow in the midst of all this I’ve been able to get in some naps (Sunday afternoon nap = heaven) so that’s been good.
Karen says
Hi Elle,
How fun! It was a haul-a-licious weekend, I see. I still haven’t checked out the blushes (haven’t had time to go to the mall), so I’ll have to vicariously live through you.
Regarding Fix +, I have a bottle of it and I reach for it on rare occasions. Sometimes if I remember to use it I’ll spray it on after I apply foundation/powder on my face, or if it’s nearby I’ll spray it on a brush that I need to wipe. I know some folks are very passionate about it, but it’s one of those products I think you don’t really need. What do you plan on using it for?
Karen says
Hi Lydia,
Yup, they do!
Karen says
Hi Bridget,
Mine is located next to a few key stores (Target, Costco), so I often end up that way just to look around. It’s entirely possible to have restraint in there! Seriously, it’s hard, but totally doable. 🙂
Who is this new blanket for? What colors are you using?
Brittany says
I love shimmery anything. It’s sort of a problem of mine :P. The Lorac trios are gorgeous. I’m especially loving the gold/bronze one.
I went out to lunch with my best friend, then we headed to Ulta where I spent a ton of money. I bought an awesome cream liner palette, a blush bronzer duo, two different lip glosses, a new foundation, mascara, and I think 6 new shades of eye shadow. I went a little nuts! They have really awesome sales and promotions, I couldn’t help myself.
Elle says
Hey Karen!
Well I have a good feeling you will love the blushes. I’ve already tried out both and I love them. Love Thing looks really dark and scary but when used with a light hand it’s gorgeous. Gentle is really pretty too–just raspberry-ish and fresh. I’ve looked at them again on the MAC website and have picked out at least 2 more that I want. Shameful, I know. 😉
The MA recommended the Fix + with mineral makeup or with blushes–she picked up some blush with the blush brush, and then sprayed the Fix + on it, and applied it. I didn’t really notice a huge difference–it felt nice–but I definitely wanted your opinion on it since I was a little hazy on what else to use it with/for. Thanks for letting me know! I think I’ll be returning it and putting that $$ towards another blush. Can’t wait to see what you do with the new products once you do get to the mall! 😉
Karen says
Hi Brittany,
LOL, me too. I have noticed, though, that on the eyes, mattes in the crease and the brow bone make any shimmer on the lid really pop! It’s one of my fave ways to wear shimmer.
WOW! Viva la haul. 🙂 Is your BFF a makeup person, too? How long have you two been buds?
Emme says
I’ve seen pictures of make up that looks like this many times but didn’t know that it was made differently. I’ve wondered what “baked” make up was a while ago so thanks. Do they have tiny cracks from baking? lol. I never knew why some pouders aren’t smooth like that gold chanel pouder you’ve reviewed recently. Is that a baked kind too?
Tiffany says
Hey Karen! The movie was pretty good. Lots o’ action, but unfortunately Angelina only had a few lines 🙁

I ordered something before the sale so it was too late for me to place another order. Oh well!

Unfortunately, she’s not, but she like to humor me, which is always good. She’s definitely more of the outdoorsy type of person, which I’m totally not, but I humor her once in awhile too, lol. We’ve known each other for 4 years now. I met her when I moved out here for school 🙂
Emme says
Sorry, I meant “Powder”.
Karen says
Hi Emme,
I don’t know if the Chanel gold highlighter is baked, but it certainly has that look. Have you tried it yet? It’s very subtle, and pretty.
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
Shoot, I thought she was one of the main characters! Oh well, I’ll probably go see it anyway if I can catch a matinee. BTW, did you hear she had her twins?
Karen says
Hi Gio,
Aren’t they? Which one’s your fave?
Karen says
Hi Dao,
Oh shoot! Don’t you hate it when that happens?
Karen says
Hi Brittany,
That sounds like a good balance. 🙂 This way, you both can get your makeup and your nature on! I wish I lived closer to my friends; one lives across a bridge and the other lives waaay on the other side of the bay. I sometimes can’t believe there was a time in our lives when we saw each other every day!
Karen says
No worries, Emme. 🙂
Tiffany says
Hey Karen! She was one of the main characters, but she didn’t say much, lol. She did, however, kick some ass. Yeah, I heard she had a boy and a girl? I bet they are super cute 🙂

I’m sooooo glad I came across this post today. I have $25 left on my gift card to the mall, and now I know exactly what to do with it (that lovely gray Lorac trio).
Also, that delicious looking cupcake is seriously killing me, I want it so bad.
