Paint Your Pout Pink and Red with Smashbox Cosmetics for Valentine’s Day

Published in: Makeup

I still haven’t made plans for Valentine’s Day… The closest I came to thinking about it was last week, when my classmate interviewed me for a Valentine’s Day story he was writing for the school newspaper.

Classmate: What’s your idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day date?
Karen: The perfect date would start with my husband cleaning the house without me having to ask him to!
Classmate: Really?
Karen: Yeah, really. Then we’d go to a restaurant that served really garlic-y food. I’d order shrimp scampi with hella garlic and then ask him to make out with me as a test of his devotion. Ideally, he’d say yes.

This morning, to get myself in the Valentine’s spirit, I ate a few candy hearts for breakfast (Mmm) and tried on these pink and red Photo Finish Lipsticks ($22) and Lip Enhancing Glosses ($18) from Smashbox Cosmetics.

Valentine’s Day Lip Looks by Smashbox

If you want to shine for your V-Date, consider a shimmery lip look using Electrify (pictured up top), a hot pink with silver sparkles.

Scoop’s a subtle pink with shimmer and has a casual feel to me, like something I’d wear with browns and taupes on a lunch date.

Pop, a creamy, peachy pink, looks like something I’d wear with smokey eyes to dinner.

If you and your date plan to hit the red carpet, give Starlit (a shimmery deep red) try.

Sweet, a creamy pale pink, is a jill of all trades. She’ll look good on all sorts of dates.

Stunning, a bright bluish pink, would look fantastic paired with pink cheeks, black cat eyeliner and some false lashes.

If you’re single and ready to mingle this V-Day, get your vixen on with Flirty, a cute hot pink.

Your date will want to have you for dinner when he (or she) sees you in Ravishing, a reddish brown.

Pair Lovely, a pinkish red with a touch of brown, with neutral eyes for a romantic dinner date.

Valentine’s Day 2009: What are your plans?

Do you have any yet? I have a sneaking suspicion mine will involve eating See’s candy in my stretchy pants while El Hub watches sci-fi and falls asleep on the couch, LOL!

  2. Amanda says:

theses are great! I haven’t tried many smashbox items (only 1 eyeshadow and 1 lipgloss) but I do like the ones I have. my faves from this post are electric, starlit and lovely. All the ones you posted are perfect for Valentine’s….and I love that you give us ideas of what to pair ’em with. We don’t have plans yet either-we usually do take out the day of and avoid the crowds! We will then do a nice dinner out a day or two later. I happen to have a massage scheduled the morning of V-Day, but that’s just a coninidence. This is a gift card from Christmas.

I didn’t make it to mac yet, but I like the purple combo you posted. the gloss does tone it down a lot and makes it very wearable.

  3. Violet says:

Ooo, these are pretty colors. I like Electric and Scoop the best.

I haven’t thought about V-Day at all, but I am totally okay with just relaxing at home. I like the answers you gave for your interview. LOL!

  4. Glosslizard says:

Oooh, Electrify! Heck yeah! I like Stunning too!

Hubby is the garlic-eater in our house, but in all fairness, even though I don’t care to consume as much as he does, I don’t shun him after he indulges!

I’m trying to figure out what to do for V-day too! I’ve already lined up a sitter for the imps, I just have to figure out what to do while they’re being sat! 🙂

  5. Rae says:

Ha! The interview snippet made me laugh out loud ^^

I love, love, love the way you’ve done these lip swatches! I always get so confused trying to match up shades on the lips and in the tubes, so seeing them in one picture definitely helps. And with a name right on there! *worships you*

  6. I really like almost all of those. I am not super familiar with Smashbox, but am becoming more and more interested in them thanks to you!

We are keeping it low key this year for V-day because we spent way too much moolah over Xmas and are trying to plan a trip to London. I got the hub some nice earphones for his iPhone and I think we might just cook a nice meal at home. 🙂 See;s candy is ALWAYS good though, especially dark chocolate truffles MMMMMMM!

Hey remember how you said that Feb was a month of career changes for Gemini’s? Well I have a job interview for a higher position at my company next week, weird huh!?!

What pretty V Day colors. I love the one called Sweet. I am a pink girl. Dear Hubby says that I should buy me a pink Vespa and drive around the ‘burgh. One of my favorite pink shades of lippie is Chanel’s Miss Pink. Vincent Longo also had a gel lippie called “Groove” which I love. All of those colors are sure purdy.
I would not mind if my V Day celebration involved these two words-Verve and Clicquot. DH knows that I absolutely love champagne and one V Day, he bought a great bottle of champagne and surprised me with it in our sun room after work with a large serving of “fries” from the Original Hot Dog shop here in our city. That pairing was to die for. Here’s a Valentine’s Day toast to you and all of the beautiful girls who read your wise words. Love to you all!!! Louise

    That conversation was funny!

Lesse, lipgloss wise, I love Electric, Scoop and Starlit (totally divine in my opinion). Lippy wise, I love Stunning, Flirty and Ravishing. I have this thing for red lips. I love em.

No plans for V-Day. Then again, I normally have no plans except lying around the house. I may go on a Chic Flick movie marathon.

I finally got Titanic on DVD (I never realized it as over THREE hours long) and I laughed at Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting. It was just baaaaaaaaad. I was laughing hysterically when Jack died as I did the first time I watched it when I was 8 as it looks so completely fake. I only cried when Rose throws the Heart of the Ocean over the sight of Titanic and dies in her sleep…again. I wonder how many times I’m going to have to watch the movie and NOT cry at that scene. It took 10 viewings to stop crying while watching The Outsiders. I’m such a baby.

Oooh, I tried a new make-up look today. It was so completely fab and I went around with sultry eyes all day (I have rediscovered the power of brown).

Here’s what I did: I put the vanilla shade of L’Oreal Paris HiP bright eye shadow duo’s “Flashy” all over my lid (see picture links below). I put the light color of the HiP duo “Shady” from the base of the eyelid to the crease; I blended in the dark color of “Shady” on the outer third of the eye up to the crease (it should kinda disappear at the end). I lined the upper lid with a thin line of L’Oreal Paris Lineur Intense Felt-tip Liner in black (no cat-eye or it ruins the effect). I took an angled eyeliner pencil and used the darker shade of “Shady” on the bottom eyelashes. I finished the look with curling and applying two coats of black mascara on top lashes and one on the bottom.

Lineur Intense-> (Mine strangely has a black bottom with gold top thing. It’s rather weird seeing it all gold)

Give it a try if you’d like. It made my brown eyes pop (which is strange because shouldn’t brown shadow make brown eyes less noticeable?).

Dear Karen,i would love to tell u that ur website has gotten me to love my makeup again! Your ideas and creativity make me super motivated to Just go for it! The smashbox colors looks soo romantic on u! Reminds me of a bouquet of valentine roses! I wanted to ask I if I ever watch secret diary of a call girl on showtime? Well I wish I vid get belles lipstick look in episode 2 of season 2? She is wearing a red coral lip and I wud die to have that color! And the show is scandolous with some great come hither looks! Thanks val!

  10. Catherine says:

    LOL. The interview is hilarious!

My SO is actually going to be gone for vday… but I’m having a night out with girlfriends the the day before, and then we’re going to celebrate the weekend afterwards, which includes our school’s Engineer’s Ball (we’re nerds lol). Haven’t decided on looks or outfits yet, but I really like the look of Sweet! Creme Cup didn’t work on me at all and I want to find something a little more neutral and toned down from Fanfare.

  11. gio says:

These are sooo pretty, esp Electric!

For V Day, my boyfriend is gonna cook us a romantic dinner at his place. I loved your answers to the interview lol.

    Hi Karen!

I own starlit and it’s such a pretty color. The problem is I can’t keep it on my lips. It slip slides around and I look like “the” crazy lady with red lipstick all over her face.

I’m now a little gunshy about buying another smashbox lipgloss. I was curious if you had any problems with the glosses staying in the right place?

  13. Daya says:

Your V-Day sounds similar to mine! LOL Except I’ll probably convince hubby to watch the Hallmark Channel over Mexican or Chinese! 🙂

I love the color of Sweet. I’ve been looking for something that isn’t too browny pink but isn’t too sheer either. Thank you!

  14. Karen says:

    Hi Ali,

I would live at Sephora if I could. 🙂 Do you and your BF have plans yet?

  15. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda,

That’s REALLY smart. I think we’re going to have to start doing that!

What kind of massage are you going to get? Shiatsu? Swedish?

I really hope you try that combo! I’m on a mission to convert the world into a purple lipgloss loving place.

  16. Karen says:

    Hi Violet,

Relaxing at home is always a good thing. 🙂

I’ve been thinking a little bit more about V-day, but only because of makeup, ha ha ha! It’s an excuse to try on some new looks!

  17. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

Electrify is *amazing*. In flash pics blue flecks show up — SO AWESOME!

Garlic AND hot food? Hubby has some seriously SKILLZ!

  18. Karen says:

    Hi Rae,

Yay! It’s a new visual I’m trying so I’m glad to hear that it works. I’ll do more of these in the future. 🙂

  19. Karen says:

    Hi Vampy Varnish,

See’s candy is like a little slice of heaven. Don’t you love going into the stores and getting samples? YUMMY YUM!

And HOLLA, that’s so fantastic to hear about your interview. What’s the job? I hope you get it! 🙂

  20. Karen says:

    Hi Louise Gray,

A pink Vespa would be so hot!

That’s so awesome that your DH did that for you! Fries? FANTASTIC!

  21. Karen says:

    Hi Kate,

Ahh, it’s been years since I’ve seen Titanic! Leo has come a long way, hasn’t he?

Brown is a truly versatile eyeshadow, isn’t it? I think it can bring out brown eyes when you hit a good combo, and it sounds like you found a great one. I think I’m kinda crushing on that Shady duo. 🙂

I hope you had a really splendid weekend!

  22. Karen says:

    Hi Valry,

That lip sounds gorgeous! I wonder what shade it was? I have a Chanel one called Leopard that’s my favorite coral red. If you want a swatch let me know and I’ll repost. 🙂

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Catherine,

Girls night sounds like it’s going to be fun! Where are you gals going?

And NERDS RULE! 🙂 Hmm, if you wear Sweet you’ve *gotta* have some false lashes on if you’re going to a ball!

  24. Karen says:

    Hi Gio,

That’s so sweet of him. Is he a good cook? I hope he makes you dessert!

  25. Karen says:

    Hi Sherry,

In general I think red glosses can always be challenging, especially if they’re very pigmented. I usually don’t have problems with Smashbox glosses staying in place, but Starlit is definitely high maintenance!

Perhaps a lip liner beneath it might give it more stick? I know Make Up For Ever makes one that’s waterproof! It won’t budge for nothing!

You could also do a nude liner beneath, too, like MAC Cremestick liner in Sublime Culture.

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Daya,

LOL, I love the Hallmark Channel! My Tivo keeps recording this one movie over and over called, “What I Did For Love.” I have to admit, I’ve watched it more than once. 🙂

Oh, I hope Sweet works for you. The texture is really lovely, too — it’s silky and light on the lips!

  27. Kate says:

My weekend was pretty good despite the headache I had yesterday.

I wouldn’t know if Leo has come a long way or not. The last movie I saw him in was “Catch Me if You Can” and I was with my choir in Florida over spring break back my freshman year of high school (2003-2004). Needless to say, I fell asleep half way through the movie since it was on late at night. 😀 I did see him in Romeo + Juliet that year too when we had finished reading said play. He was better but the iambic pentameter and I don’t really mix so I was doodling all over my notebooks instead of watching the movie in class!

  28. tatiana says:

All very pretty! You’ve inspired me to get more pinks into my lipstick collection. Question! Are they creamy?

  29. valry says:

Hey Karen! Thanx for the great suggestion for a red coral lip! I could not make it to a chanel counter so I settled my craving with a dior addict lipstick gypsy red from sephora. I really like it because I can wear it with any red liner to make it pop on those days after getting a little sun and glowing with bronzer! Now I need to find something golden from hello kitty! I mean how can anyone not be in a great mood after using the kitty collection? You better make sure Tabs doesn’t bust into ur kitty stash before you do during the night especially! Hee hee! Enjoy the LIL kitty and have fun!

  30. Michelle says:

All those shades are lovely, but I really like Stunning. I have new Valentines Day plans, my husband and I went to Vegas this last weekend instead. We found out his sister is getting married that day (how romantic, no?) and of course we couldn’t miss it so that’s what we’ll be doing. I’m sure your hub has some secret plans up his sleeves for you that weekend 😉

  31. Isabelle says:

Oh my God, these colours are AMAZING! I prefer Electric and Starlit for the glosses as well as Flirty and Ravishing for the lipsticks. Your lips are very sexy with these shades.
