I was 8 when I watched cybernetic Ah-nold pop out his own eyeball in the first Terminator movie, and ever since then I’ve harbored a not-so-secret obsession with science fiction.
Consequently, it probably comes as no surprise that I’m over the moon in love with the out-of-this-world glitter in Urban Decay’s new Stardust Eyeshadows.
—– RANDOM SCI-FI TRANSMISSION —– Are you watching Caprica, the new Battlestar Galactica spinoff?
In a nutshell, it precedes the near-extinction of humanity at the hands of man-made androids called Cylons.
Stay with me! 🙂
The show’s set 58 years before the events in Galactica, on a near future Earth-like planet that looks oddly like Vancouver, and even though Galactica seemed more shoot-em-up and space invaderish, there are still delightfully scary robots up in the mix (YAY!).
I don’t know if you liked BG, but you don’t have to have followed it to appreciate Caprica. If you like sci-fi, jump in! — and then let me what you think. 🙂
—– END RANDOM SCI-FI TRANSMISSION —– *BEEP* LOL!
Back to the shadows (ha!). The four cuties I talk about here — Atmosphere, Retrograde, Griffith and Diamond Dog ($20 each) — perform basically the same as the others I tried earlier this month. Like those, they apply with sheer pigmentation while packing of loads o’ glittery sparkle, and they stick to my skin with minimal fallout.
When applied wet, Atmosphere, the shimmery teal with silver flecks, looks looks a lot like MAC Blue Sorcery to me. If you feel like you missed out on Sorcery (it was limited-edition), you might want to give Atmosphere a try.
Atmosphere, applied dry (left) and wet (right)
I like Atmosphere, but I looooove Retrograde, the dark shimmery purple. I dig how pigmented it is, even when I apply it dry, and if you mulled over Urban Decay’s 54 (a light purple) but thought it was too sheer to pull the trigger, take another look at Retrograde.
Retrograde
Now for sheer, glittery Griffith — I think it looks lovely when paired with golds.
Griffith
As for neutral shades, isn’t shimmery, grayish brown Diamond Dog cute? I’m looking forward to trying it with MAC Club. I bet that pair will look really pretty. 🙂
Diamond Dog
Do any of these catch your glitter-loving eye?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Just a heads up, you spelt ‘cylons’ wrong on the picture.
Karen says
Thanks for looking out, J!
J says
Wooops, now its fixed.
marisol says
Don’t know either of the two shows you are talking about. Sorry 🙁
Retrograde & Atmosphere are my fave of the four. Applied wet they look fantastic. Also these would make awesome nail polish colors, don’t you think?

SERIOUSLY. DUDE. Agent Ballard is in Battlestar, and half the time he’s wearing a tank top. It’s hot, trust.
marisol says
WHAT?!?! That’s all you had to say. I am adding season 1 to my Netflix queue. Hubba hubba hubba!

Huge BSG fan, and watched the Caprica pilot too… I was a little unsure about Caprica, but I think it’ll develop into something really interesting!
No more eye shadows for me until Alice becomes available, I’m holding out!

Have you ordered your palette yet? Sephora’s taking phone orders: 1-877-SEPHORA from 6am to 9pm PST!

What! I didn’t know that! Well poop.
Karen says
Yup, yup! They’ll also be at Sephora stores next month! I called my nearby store in Novato and they’re getting it in during the first week o’ Feb.
Arianne says
I *loved* BSG (and my boy Helo OH HAI!) but haven’t watched Caprica. I’ll be sure to check it out though. 🙂
Retrograde looks incredible when applied wet! These shadows don’t look like they pack that much punch.

LOL “Oh Hai!” is right when it comes to that Cylon-lover!

I too am a sci-fi geek, albeit a late-in-life one. I never even acknolwedged the genré until I met my husband, but I’ve quickly made up for lost time. My husbandand I were/are HUGE fans of BSG! We followed it religiously while it was on the air, and own all the DVDs. He has watched the whole series over again a few times since it was canceled. I personally think it’s one of the most well-written TV series of all time. As far as Caprica, I’ve seen the pilot three times, and am looking forward to the series, since I’m glad to watch anything written by the creators of BSG. I can’t say if I’ll live it as much as it’s predecessor, but I’m definitely along for the ride.
As far as those UD glitters, I luuurve all of them. I love small flake glitter, and those are some very wearable shades. I wish I could have all of them, but it’s not likely end up getting any of them. Woe is me. 🙁 Heh.
Karen says
You are too funny — I was going to fire up the pilot to Caprica again tonight!
How is school, by the way?
Paris B says
Hands up for being into sci fi too! Diamond Dog looks gorgeous.

WOOT, homie. Did you ever watch BSG?
Ashley says
*grumble grumble* I want these UD Stardusts MAAAAD but.. nope I cannot. Must fight the urges =(
Btw, I was on Craigslist & found this UD Alice in Wonderland BoS for $110. You’ve got to be joking. Some people think they can get away with anything!
Karen says
Wow, that’s crazy!
Kypris says
I’m SUCH a sci-fi geek, but I confess I barely watch TV, with my schedule it’s just too difficult! Sometimes I’ll go on a spree and stream everything online, though…
Karen says
Ah, aren’t those sci-fi veg days the best?
What’s going on with you? Did you have a good Monday?

ZOMG… Retrograde looks AMAZING!

Retrograde and atmosphere are both very pretty. I have only watched the TV movie and a few episodes of Battlestar Galactica and I quite enjoyed the show. There is a sexier aurora about that show. I have never heard of Caprica though, but I might check it out. Is Caprica shot in Vancouver? I know BSG was. Have you been to Vancouver?

Once when I was a kid, but I don’t really remember it. I’d love to go back someday. When is the best time to visit?
amy says
IMO, it would be May to June the weather is nice and warm but not too hot. July to August is nice too and it is definitely beach weather but can get pretty hot. July there was a week of heat wave at around 35 Celsius.

AHHHH!! I love Atmosphere! I think that’s the whole reason why I got into Cool Heat, hehe
Karen says
Hee! 🙂 How was your Monday? Did you have a good one?
Jen says
*drool!* I love the look of Atmosphere and Retrograde. Jonesing for these, big time.
Karen says
Retrograde seems to be *the* shadow out of the bunch!
Carolina says
This may sound silly….by wet do you mean you used water or another kind of liquid?? I LOVE how they looked when applied wet – gorgeous!
Karen says
Totally not silly! 🙂 I spritz my finger or a brush head with MAC Fix+ first before applying the shadow. It intensifies the color.
Patty says
Diamond Dog! For some reason I am OBSESSED with gray-browns. Or brown-grays. Taupes in general.
Tavia says
I only like the Retrograde eyeshadow….anyway will be the only one I would use from these 4 🙂

Retrograde is the hawtness!! Come to mama!
I enjoyed BSG in the beginning, but I kinda quit watching it when it got extremely dark (not that it was sunshine and roses from the beginning, or anything!) I think it was the New Caprica angle that killed it for me. But I did go online and find the series finale–WTF! Talk about a twist I never saw coming. Overall I prefer happier, sunnier scifi, like Star Trek. But I may give Caprica a try, just to see.
Saku says
Griffith and retrograde I’m drawn to.
NINA says
Im loving Griffith and Diamond Dog …. apart or mebbe even together. Gasp! Its really purddyyy!!!!
Hubs and I did watch Caprica – im liking it so far. Pretty interesting story development even if a 2 hour pilot was a tad long.
Zoe reminds me of Zooey Deshcanel for some reason.
Amanda says
Karen, back to the question about applying shadows wet, I have the Ben Nye LiquiSet, but I have gotten “wet spots” on my shadows from using this. I dip the brush in the liquid, dab it off, and then swipe the shadow. Am I doing this wrong?
Summer Staff says
WOw, when you apply them wet they look like totally different eyeshadows 🙂
Glosslizard says
I do loves me some sci-fi! Am I watching Caprica? No. Will I be when Hubby sees that picture? No doubt, yes! 😀
Wow, sparkle is really coming back with a vengeance this season! I love the look of Diamond Dog to spice up neutral eye looks, it also looks like it would make a terrific liner shade! Count me in!
Sophia says
Is it wrong that I want to get my sticky little paws on Diamond Dog just because of the David Bowie song? It is? Well, I’ll just go slink into my corner, then. 😉
Sophia says
(Not saying that it’s not a gorgeous shade in its own right, though!)
Sheena says
It certainly is shot in Vancouver! We see it all the time. My friend’s apartment building always has posts up in it about the filming around the building. I walked onto the set once by accident. Mostly awkward.
knownever says
Have you checked out Stargate Universe? It’s on hiatus now, but it’s a less campy incarnation of the Stargate franchise.
Also, Retrograde looks great. I can’t wait for these shadows to come out!

love love love!!! o urban decay stardust will you ALL be my valentine??? haha i’m going to limit myself to 2 (or 3 or 5 *aaaargh*) of these and i really appreciate the swatches you’ve provided (salamat haha)! i thought the space cowboy looked gorgeous on you (wet application), but i don’t think peachy or gold shadows work well on me. i adored moon spoon though & i am absolutely ga-ga over all 4 of these! what’s a girl to do!
