New York Magazine online has posted a spiffy feature in which you can browse through a huge assortment of pretty lipsticks. You can compare by thumbnail image or view them as a slide show with swatches, prices and availability. Both drugstore and department store brands appear in the lineup. I spotted Maybelline, Clarins and Clinique and couldn’t help but notice the MAC presence, holla!

“We tested over 400 [lipsticks] to make sure they looked, smelled and rocked the lips hot,” says Sharon Clott, online assistant market editor at New York Magazine.
For each lipstick there’s a product shot, swatches and the colors on the lips of NY Magazine staffers. (Side note: do you suppose lipstick tester/model was in their job description? I’d so apply for that gig in a hot second.)
I’d like to see them add swatches done on real skin to the swatches they’ve provided on white backgrounds, but the lip pics still give you a good idea of each color.
Earlier today on the site I found quite a few lippies to add to my to-try list, including Haute Face Matte Lipstick in Star Power (#66) and Clarins Joli Rouge in Hot Pink (#79). Have fun!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Nifty, but I probably still won’t purchase until I can sample in person!

I’m with gloss lizard. It’s cool…but I’m not sure it’s enough to give me the confidence to buy something w/o seeing it on my skin first. It’s definitely cool how you can make the lip pics bigger so that you can get a good view.

You’re welcome, Adina. You rock, too!

Hey BeautyTalk,
Glad you enjoy it!
Have a good one.

Hi Glosslizard,
I agree, seeing stuff in person always seals or breaks the deal for me. Smell and texture (and truthfully, cuteness) all play a big part in lipstick decision making.

Hi Megan,
So so true. I didn’t know that you could make the lip pics bigger, so thanks for pointing that out.

This site is great! I love to find new products and get new impressions.

It should be said: “Makeup is a girl’s best friend”!
14. Glosslizard said, on March 11th, 2008:
Yes, cuteness is definitely a factor, and smell can surely be a deal-breaker!
I went back to the site and was poking around… oh yikes! The jacket channel could be seriously hazardous to one’s wallet!!

Hi Vanessa,
I’m good! How about you? When do you leave for NY?
16. Vanessa said, on March 11th, 2008:
I am doing ok, just been busy busy, and it’s HOT here in Southern Cali so that doesn’t help very much! LOL. I leave this Sunday for the Big Apple, you know I am gonna do some shopping! I heard it’s chilly over there, so that’s quite a change!

OMG!!! That is an awesome site!!! (not as awesome as yours though. OBVIOUSLY! XD ) But I have always wished that the big name store sites would swatch things! I always had to either buy things in person, or search through beauty blogs for good swatches! This is too cool!!!
Mariah’s last blog post..I’ve got something in my front pocket

Hi Dao,
You’re welcome! Have you found anything you want to try yet?
19. Karen said, on March 11th, 2008:
Hi Susanne,
That’s so true – makeup is definitely a girl’s best friend! Have fun checking out the lipsticks!
20. Karen said, on March 11th, 2008:
Hi Glosslizard,
OH really? I gotta check that out. Not that I need any more jackets in my life (sigh, they’re kind of a weakness…but they so make an outfit!).
How has your day been? I’m supposed to work out tonight but I’m exhausted! I woke up at 3:00 and couldn’t fall asleep. The weird thing is that two other people I ran into today at work also woke up at that time and couldn’t fall back asleep, either.
21. Karen said, on March 11th, 2008:
Hi Mariah,
Awww, thanks girlfriend! I agree – I wish big stores would do some swatching too! It makes a world of difference to actually see it live and on skin or paper, even!
22. Karen said, on March 11th, 2008:
Hi Vanessa,
I am aching for hot weather. It’s been nice and almost warm up here but you still have to wear a sweater. At least it’s not cold though, right?
Have fun on your trip – and I hope you find lots of cute stuff. I’ll send you good shopping vibes!

Wow! I was the same way last night, for pretty much the same reason! I totally skipped out on aikido last night! Boo for me! But I’ll go tonight and make up for it! It must be the time change causing strange 3:00 insomnia!
24. Karen said, on March 15th, 2008:
LOL, Glosslizard,
Part of the insomnia for these past few days has been because of the neighbor’s cat, AGH! He comes over in the middle of the night now. He totally wants to party with me at midnight!
