Chain mail chic.
Picture ScarJo riding a white warhorse while hoisting Dolce & Gabbana’s banner and rocking a custom-tailored suit of chain mail.
LOL! And looking hot, because I can’t imagine her ever looking awkward in armor, but anyways! That’s the feeling I get from the seven-piece Shimmer Glow winter collection, which was, fittingly, inspired by armor (or armour, depending on your POV).
Cool-toned chain mail grays and gunmetals feature prominently, as do varying levels of shimmer and shine, but because this is Dolce & Gabbana, the total package still seems seductive, sultry and gloriously wearable.
The collection’s crazy gray lipstick (Moon 69) perfectly embodies the idea.
I mean just look at it — there are 50 shades of cray in that tube! Expect advanced future human-robot babe hybrids to be carrying something like it to da club in the year 2115.
Interestingly, even though it looks cool and cold and tough in the tube, it’s shockingly wearable. Yes, it starts a little gray and nuts, obviously, but because it is quite sheer (it’s mostly sparkle, actually, with very little gray pigment), it mellows out on your lips, eventually becoming something you could comfortably wear to your grandma’s house without her looking at you disapprovingly and muttering, “Kids today!”
Similarly, the Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Smokey Eyes Dust 103 ($60) also exudes chain mail (it houses a light shimmery, silvery bluish gray; a medium matte gray; a dark blackish gray; and a single cool-toned shimmery, lemony beige). The two shimmers bring high-fashion glow and shine, while the mattes keep the quad grounded.
I usually prefer warm color temps to cool, but I don’t shy away from grays (see: the Hourglass Visionnaire Duo in Prism).
These particular shades, though, I feel are a tad too cool for my skin… I think they’ll work better on Knights of the Cool-Toned Table.
That said, the powders themselves are lovely. Dolce & Gabbana’s eyeshadows blend so well that they’re almost too easy to blend. If you, like me, tend to over-blend sometimes, I feel ya dawg. Refrain; otherwise, you’ll end up with muddy lids.
As for the new Shimmer Powder, it’s almost exactly like Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Fantasme. Same spongy texture, same fine flecks of glitter, same raison d’être (use it as a highlighter, or like a glittery topcoat for your eyeshadow). Just pat it directly on your skin with fingers.
In the pot, the two look almost identical, but on skin, Dolce & Gabbana’s Shimmer Powder conveys more of its straight-up silvery white glitter than Fantasme, which also has pieces of pink and green micro glitter.
I like both…but I think I prefer Fantasme. It just looks a tad warmer (due to the pink) and works a bit better for me.
If you’ve been looking for makeup to wear with your favorite suit of fancy armor, you’re in luck! There are lots of metal-friendly cool tones here and tons of refined sparkle.

Karen those colors are GORGEOUS on you – stunning !!! For sure you can – and should – wear cools. Soooo pretty, I love the look on you!
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Aw, thanks friend. I hardly ever wear cool-toned grays but maybe I will start. Are you a D&G makeup fan? I love their quads!
Jules says
Yeah, I’m gonna need this. Drat – I was already waffling between buying a new dress, concert tickets to my favourite band (Nightwish) or something else, but I gotta have 69 Moon. OOH.
Karen says
I want to see the dress, Jules!
Agata says
I think these shades are great on you. But let’s be honest, what doesn’t look good on you? I was hoping this shade in the top left corner would be more like baby blue but it looks grey in your swatch.
Karen says
Hi Agata,
I was kinda hoping this would go more blue too but alas, gray is in the house! 🙂
Chris25 says
I wonder if D&G’s creative director was feeling nostalgic for the 80s when they created those lipsticks shades. They’re so frosty!
Karen says
Hi Chris,
Yes, I can definitely see that. The gray shade makes me think of ’90s lips. Did you ever do the look with super dark purple liner on the outer lip line and silvery lipstick? That was my jam back in the day!
Debra says
These cool tones work for you!
I think cool-on-cool is just a tad too cold! I’m waiting for Prism to arrive, though.
There is a bit of the 80s frost-brrr going on (runs awayyyy).
Karen says
You got a hold of Prism! YES! As you can see I am VERY excited about this, girlfriend. 🙂
Ashleigh says
I’m so confused and dare I say, dazzled? Wat is even going on? Is it ridiculous to want one of those $37 lipsticks I could never wear? But they call to my unicorn spirit animal…. there is something very pleasing about the teal green gem paired with the champagne lipstick.
Poo@beautyandmakeupmatters says
I can never think of myself pulling off a frosted lipstick that too in gray shade with so much elegance but you just rock the look.. I liked the powder duo here.. :-* those shimmery shimmers are calling me 🙂
IRockFaces says
You had me at dolce. lol I have their luminous foundation and it is the bees knees omgosh. For some reason I really like all of the lippies even though they are super frosty and of course you look amazing in all of it. Yaaay go Karen!! Tabs must be so proud.
Kiss & Make-up says
Oh wow, this all looks very frosty and wintry yes! Would have been great for the Snow & Ice look I did earlier this week, lol.
astou says
The packaging is just gorgeous.
… The colors as well !!!
Erin says
Hmmm, not sure I’d spend money on those but they look nice on you!
Genevieve says
I just love those cool toned colours – they totally suit me. I am a big fan of cool blue/grey palettes. Not many brands do a good job of those colours and it seems like Dolce and Gabana have nailed it. So beautiful and it really suits you Karen.
Iris says
I love the packaging for these. The gemstones on the top of the lipsticks are so fancy!
Fancie says
This collection looks so fun and beautiful! I just love the packaging and the lipsticks and shimmer powder are stunning
Chic Lapin says
Those are some very unique looking lipsticks! Love Moon.
Alyssa Melanie says
They are all great items to collect. But if I ever buy them, I’ll probably not be using them. They’re all too beautiful to be wasted on my face, lol! Well, the nail polish is an exception. I love using shimmery polishes on my nails. And probably the eyeshadow quad, too. But the lipsticks? No way! I can never pull off colors like those. Looks gorgeous on you, though. Especially the eyeshadows. <3
MamaToMany says
Looooove! Thank you for the swatches- I was dying to know how Moon looked… and I fear that my husband has some competition, because I’m in love! Lipsticks are generally against my religion (ie I don’t lie the way they look on me), I’m more of a gloss or balm gal. So these?! These are killen’ it for me! And I do agree with others that you DO look fab in this look.
— side note– I, too, used to rock the dark lip liner. Hahaha. My worst look EVER was in the early 90s with brown (brown?!) lip liner. Baaaad. lolol
But these- I’m in love. Thanks again!!
